Netflix has opted not to renew mockumentary comedy series American Vandal for a third season. I hear producing studio CBS TV Studios is fielding incoming interest in the Funny Or Die show from other potential buyers.
“American Vandal will not return for a third season,” Netflix said in a statement. “We’re very grateful to the creators, writers, cast and crew for bringing their innovative comedy to Netflix, and to the fans and critics who embraced its unique and unconventional humor.”
True-crime satire American Vandal, CBS TV Studios’ first series for an outside streaming service, had flown under the radar with a modest budget and cast of largely unknown young actors in its first season to become a top binge-watched show for Netflix and earn an Emmy nomination and a Peabody Award.

“American Vandal” has been canceled at Netflix, Variety has learned.
The half-hour mockumentary series launched its second season on the streaming service back in September. An individual with knowledge of the situation said that other platforms have expressed interest in continuing the series.
“‘American Vandal’ will not return for a third season,” Netflix said. “We’re very grateful to the creators, writers, cast and crew for bringing their innovative comedy to Netflix, and to the fans and critics who embraced its unique and unconventional humor.”
A spoof of the true crime documentary genre, the first season of the show followed two high school students as they tried to determine if one of their classmates had in fact spray painted penises onto over two dozen faculty cars as he was accused of doing. In the second season, those same students traveled to a prestigious prep school in the Pacific Northwest to...

Last year, American Vandal arrived on tiptoe, a barely promoted gift from the Netflix gods that had fans wondering, “Who drew the dicks?” One easily could have mistaken its mockumentary format for a real investigation into a high school prank that resulted in the wrongful expulsion of class clown Dylan Maxwell (Jimmy Tetro). “I was speaking to someone we recently staffed in the writers’ room who said it took him four episodes before realizing these were actors,” says Dan Perrault, who created the true-crime parody series with Tony Yacenda and executive producer Dan Lagana.

[Note: The following interview contains spoilers for the ending of “American Vandal” Season 2.]
What’s the key to crafting an effective close to an eight-part season, one that not only delivers a logical conclusion to its central mystery while delivering an insightful message about all the players involved?
As the team behind “American Vandal” can attest — having now done it twice — part of the secret is finding the best possible people to be in front of the camera
“It’s very important to us to not stunt cast because we don’t want faces to take us out of the world, but when you get into actual casting, it really just does become who had the best audition and who’s the most real,” series co-creator Tony Yacenda told IndieWire. “That’s what DeRon [Horton] and Taylor Dearden and Travis Tope did. These were people who we felt were the most honest version of the characters. The most important thing is to get the best actors.

If Netflix’s American Vandal wasn’t the greatest show of 2017, it was the most surprisingly great. A mockumentary from a largely unknown cast and creative team, it managed to keep the joke of its premise — two high school Av nerds doggedly pursue the truth about who spray-painted 27 dicks on 27 cars in the faculty parking lot — tumescently hilarious throughout. More importantly, all the dick humor gradually rose to point at something deeper and sadder as the series considered the lives of all the kids featured in the fake film. It...

There’s a tradeoff happening in Season 2 of “American Vandal,” but it’s not the one you might expect. Sure, gone are the cartoonish, spray-painted pensises on the sides and hoods of Hyundai Elantras. What takes its place is a prank of even larger proportion, done in another joke genre that makes it hard to describe without some creative euphemisms. It may take a little longer to get there than last time, but this new season becomes a worthy follow-up by not only swapping out one anatomical gag for another, but by filing off some of its goofier edges for another grounded look at the other daily challenges of high school life.

In its first season, Netflix’s mockumentary American Vandal dug into who was behind the spray-painted phalluses adorning the cars of faculty members at a private school. The true crime mockumentary American Vandal was an instant hit because, well, who doesn’t like a high school mystery about a low-stakes crime involving penis graffiti? Show creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda were joined on stage at the Atx Television Festival with executive producers Dan Lagana and Joe Farrell to talk about the Netflix series in a panel called “American Vandal: Orchestrating The Perfect (Un)True Crime.” Fans of the show were happy to learn about what it took to make the series and many, including myself, were hoping to hear more about season 2. Unfortunately, we didn’t learn much about the sophomore season, but the good news is that we learned Perrault and Yacenda love going on road trips together — and that’s where they came up with ideas for it. Ideas they didn’t share with us.

By now, horror fans are used to Blumhouse Productions’ surprise “dumping” strategy, where a handful never-before-seen titles hit Netflix/VOD without warning. This explains why you might not have known about Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s second feature this year, Viral, until – well – now. Movies like Mockingbird, Mercy, and The Veil don’t make you question why Blum chose to unceremoniously push them out, but Viral does. There’s more to Christopher Landon and Barbara Marshall’s screenplay than squirmy invaders and teenage chills, that I urge you to discover from the comfort of your sofa and surround sound setup.

Anytime we as horror fans read the words "From the Producer Of The Visit, The Purge, And Insidious", we tend to take note. Even though that doesn't necessarily mean much, because it's not the writer or director, however we're still intrigued.

You could generously call the decision to hide Independence Day: Resurgence from critics an “unconventional” choice. 20th Century Fox initially wasn’t screening the movie at all before it opened, then opted to only show it earlier today at a press screening hours after it hit screens, that’s not much of a sign of confidence. It’s odd too, considering how well regarded the original is and how well nostalgia worked for Jurassic World last year. Well, I hate to be the one to say it, but they were right to hide this one. It’s out now and likely will do strong business, but the quality drop between Independence Day and Independence Day: Resurgence is staggering. What a shame too. I’m sure everyone knows what this flick is about, but just quickly, I’ll state the obvious that it’s a sequel to the disaster epic that...

Somehow – despite Roland Emmerich’s obsessive focus on Earth’s destruction – Independence Day found a way to bottle raw human fortitude in a way that its sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, clumsily fumbles. In the most generic, fan-servicing, sequelitis-stricken way, this sci-fi doomsday franchise charges back into theaters like a bull in an intergalactic China shop. The entire films is basically one big “Here we go again!” moment on repeat, as Emmerich prays that nostalgia is enough to distract from the nothingness that’s occurring on screen. Look! There’s a heroic poster of Will Smith! Or over there! It’s that crazy doctor who totally should be dead! And Jeff Goldblum! You guys still love him, right?!
Yes, Mr. Emmerich, we do still love Jeff Goldblum – but not when he’s reduced to making silly faces like a rejected Tim & Eric sketch. Granted, I’d pay good money for a...

Welcome to another “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. We wrote last week that this summer has seen very little originality, and this week continues that trend as another sequel to a beloved film finally hits theaters. The Will Smith-less Independence Day: Resurgence debuts twenty years after the original became a summer blockbuster phenomenon. There are two original films hitting screens this week as well, the Matthew McConaughey starring Free State of Jones and the Blake Lively versus shark thriller The Shallows.
Independence Day: Resurgence
What we are excited about:
Independence Day is one of the more beloved summer blockbusters of the last twenty years, and there have always been murmurs of a sequel for some time now. Fans have been patiently waiting, and after twenty years, the wait is finally over. It does seem like the perfect time to release another...

Aliens invade once again in Independence Day: Resurgence. Ryan reviews another explosive close encounter...
When eager movie-goers queued up around the block for Independence Day in 1996, quite a number of critics were baffled. Here was a film widely criticised for its hackneyed plot and wooden dialogue, which didn’t even pretend to take itself seriously, and yet still the alien invasion-disaster hybrid was breaking attendance records.
"Judging from the summer's record-breaking box-office grosses," one writer moaned, "audiences no longer care - or, more depressing, are incapable of detecting - that the plots of movies don't track."
In many ways, Independence Day set the template for 21st century summer movies. Its event status was trumpeted by a marketing campaign almost as huge as the megalithic alien ships that descended on Earth’s quaking cities. Its multi-strand plot, ensemble cast and panavision destruction made it the unwitting grandfather of such explosive movies as Transformers,...

The first week of July sees a ton of genre titles headed home on DVD and Blu-ray including a handful of cult classics including Stuart Gordon’s Robot Jox, The Crimson Cult which co-stars Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee, Luigi Cozzi’s Contamination, a pair of 1974 shockers- Deranged and Spasmo- as well as The Killers, which is based on Ernest Hemingway’s chilling tale of the same name and gave the film noir subgenre a boost back in the 1940’s.
For those of you looking for something a little more current, you’ve got Alien Outpost, The Pact 2, Trophy Heads and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s recent zombie film, Maggie, to look forward to as well. As if that wasn’t enough, we also have last year’s Town that Dreaded Sundown remake is also arriving on both DVD and Blu-ray, with the latter being available exclusively at Best Buy on July 7th.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Visual Entertainment Inc. Director: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. Writers: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Earl E. Smith. Cast: Addison Timlin, Veronica Cartwright, Anthony Anderson and Travis Tope. A new slasher is set to release this summer. The horror film is titled The Town that Dreaded Sundown. Astute horror film fans will realize that this is the second film to be based on the "Moonlight Murders." In 1946, a serial killer stalked the local lovers of Texarkana. He killed eight and assaulted several more. He was never caught. In the latest version of The Town that Dreaded Sundown, writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa ("American Horror Story") tries to bring some fictional closure to events, which took place over sixty-nine years ago. Though, the real life murders are more horrifying than the ones shown here. This latest film is an homage to the 1976 original film; but, it lacks any real terror.

After years as a character actor in flicks as diverse as Black Hawk Down, The Dark Knight and The Perfect Storm, William Fichtner is finally landing major roles. The actor, last seen in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, has signed on to play a top general in Independence Day 2.
Fichtner’s character will first appear in the next Independence Day sequel before becoming a more central player (possibly even the main antagonist) in the already-planned third and fourth movies.
It’s great to see Fichtner scoring bigger parts in blockbuster fare. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, in which he played villain Eric Sacks, was a breakthrough pic for the actor, actually allowing him to showcase a dramatic range that has been reined in in his past projects.

The most recent piece of Independence Day 2 casting news kicked off an almighty social media storm, with Maika Monroe seemingly stepping into the role once played by Mae Whitman. But unless someone has a weird personal animus against eight-year-old actresses, Mckenna Grace’s addition to Roland Emmerich’s should pass by without causing the same tumult. The actress, a veteran of Disney’s live-action/puppetry show Crash & Bernstein, will slot in alongside fellow newbies Monroe and Liam Hemsworth and plays someone called Daisy. We don’t know what her character will be getting up to yet, but it’s highly unlikely she’ll be a fighter pilot. The remaining cast members are a mix of other fresh recruits (Jessie Usher, Travis Tope, Joey King, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Lance Lim, Sela Ward) and veterans of the first film (Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A.
