The Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme, the U.K.’s largest festival of Japanese cinema, will take to the road in February and March. Its 2024 selection is the event’s largest ever with much of it attuned to the theme of memories, times and reflections.
“The JFTFP24 delves into Japanese cinema to explore how memories are employed in the cinematic voices of Japanese filmmakers, from films where memories are a focal point to works where they play a subliminal role in driving or affecting people’s minds and behavior,” said organizers.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (Sbiff) announced its winning films at a ceremony this morning in Santa Barbara.
“This 38th edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival drew filmmakers from as far as Turkey, India, Israel, and Sierra Leone, half of whom were women,” said Sbiff’s Programming Director, Claudia Puig. “We were delighted with the enthusiastic reception to our diverse program of 200 films from 43 countries. Cinema is one of the most powerful vehicles for empathy, providing a window of understanding to all who seek to look through it. We thank the filmmakers in attendance and our avid Santa Barbara audience for so heartily embracing the festival experience. Several films prompted standing ovations and packed theaters, marking 2023 a full-throttled return to celebrating cinema from around the globe.”

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced its prizewinners Saturday morning, with “26.2 to Life,” directed by Christine Yoo, winning the audience choice award. The Panavision Spirit Award for Independent Cinema went to “I Like Movies,” directed by Chandler Levack, while the international feature film award went to “A Man (Aru Otoko),” directed by Kei Ishikawa. “A Bunch of Amateurs,” directed by Kim Hopkins, won the documentary award.

Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan (Aca) announces the sixth Aca Cinema Project series – New Films from Japan – organized as part of its Japan Film Overseas Expansion Enhancement Project in collaboration with the IFC Center and with Visual Industry Promotion Organization (Vipo) entrusted with the operation of the project. Oscar-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and Shoplifters star Ando Sakura have joined Monster, the upcoming feature from Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda.
It marks the first collaboration between Sakamoto, known for scoring Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence, The Revenant and The Last Emperor, and Kore-eda, who won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2018 with Shoplifters.
Monster also reunites the Japanese director with his Shoplifters star Sakura, who is also known for roles in Sion Son’s Love Exposure and Kei Ishikawa’s A Man, which played at last year’s Venice Film Festival.

Hainan Island International Film Festival (Hiiff) in China’s Sanya has returned as an in-person event, following a relatively short Covid-related postponement, with separate competition sections for features, documentaries and shorts.
The festival opened on December 18 with a screening of Chinese filmmaker Da Peng’s Post Truth and is scheduled to wrap on December 25. It was originally scheduled to run December 3-10, but was postponed due to the on-going Covid situation.
Veteran festival director Marco Mueller recently joined Hiiff as artistic director. He previously headed programming for China’s Pingyao International Film Festival.

Khoury’s politically charged debut, which world premiered at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival, struck a chord with both the international jury, headed by Japanese filmmaker Naomi Kawase, and moviegoers in Cairo, who also handed “Alam” the audience award. At a rousing Middle East premiere on Nov. 18, moviegoers burst into applause several times during the screening.

The 27th Busan International Film Festival opened Wednesday night on a long overdue note of optimism with the premiere of Scent of Wind by Iranian director Hadi Mohaghegh. Festival organizers have indicated that they view the 2022 festival as a full-scale comeback edition, following two hard years of pandemic restrictions and a sequence of prior political challenges.
“We believe that the seat occupancy rates have recovered to about 80 to 90 percent compared to 2019,” said Huh Moon-young, the festival’s director, on opening night.
The opening ceremony, which took place at the festival’s main venue, the Busan Cinema Center, was attended by Asian cinema luminaries and celebrities, including Hong Kong screen icon Tony Leung, Korean star Song Kang-ho, Korean-American actor Daniel Dae Kim, Thai actor-model Mario Maurer and Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda.

Korea’s Busan International Film Festival (October 5-14) has announced its full line-up, including opening film Scent Of Wind, directed by Iran’s Hadi Mohaghegh, while Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu-Wai will be honoured as Asian Filmmaker Of The Year.

A question we all sometimes ask ourselves is if we truly know the people we are surrounded with, especially those we are intimately connected to. Occasionally, a secret of greater magnitude shakes our confidence in those we love, but what is the limit? Is there a betrayal of greater proportions we can forgive and continue loving the person, once we are given a palpable reason for it? Is there a reason good enough? Two of the most anticipated Japanese films showing at the Venice Film Festival this year — Kei Ishikawa’s mystery drama A Man (2022) and a digitally remastered version of Yasujirō Ozu’s timeless classic A Hen in the Wind (1948) — share a uniquely curious distinction. Following their Croisette premieres, Top Gun: Maverick and Elvis helped reignite the post-covid box office. The former has earned 1.4 billion worldwide, including more than 700 million domestically. Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis is nowhere near that level, but with a 145 million domestic haul and a 270 million worldwide gross to date, it clearly shows the popcorn-munching crowd was hungry to return to cinemas, at least for big-budget studio releases with plenty of wiz-bang and razzle-dazzle.

The 79th Venice International Film Festival has just announced the line-up for the next edition. The 79th Venice International Film Festival is organised by La Biennale di Venezia and directed by Alberto Barbera. It will take place at Venice Lido from 31 August to 10 September 2022. The Festival is officially recognised by the Fiapf (International Federation of Film Producers Association).
The aim of the Festival is to raise awareness and promote international cinema in all its forms as art, entertainment and as an industry, in a spirit of freedom and dialogue. The Festival also organises retrospectives and tributes to major figures as a contribution towards a better understanding of the history of cinema.

Both of the German-based sales firm’s Competition titles are Italian films. Gianni Amelio’s Lord Of The Ants recounts the true story of Italian playwright and poet Aldo Braibanti, and the relationship he had with his pupil Ettore that lead to an infamous trial in the 1960s.
Kavac Film, Ibc Movie, Tenderstories and Rai Cinema produced the title.

Fantaspoa 2022 Announced: "After two years of successful online editions, the 18th edition of the beloved Brazilian genre festival Fantaspoa will return to the cinemas from April 15th through May 1st. This year, attendees will discover a very different Fantaspoa from its last on-site edition (a very distant 2019): instead of its usual two venues, the fest will take place simultaneously in five cinemas, with part of its program also being available online, geo-blocked for viewers within Brazil.

“Traces of Sin” is director Kei Ishikawa’s first narrative feature film. It is based on a detective novel by Tokuro Nukui. The story follows crime journalist Tanaka’s (Satoshi Tsumabuki) reinvestigation of a murder of an upper-middle class family which happened a year ago. The police never found the murderer. However, during Tanaka’s investigation, some new clues have emerged and they may have showed who the real murderer is. At the meantime, Tanaka has to take care of his traumatized sister who is in jail, because of her negligence of her child.
While the film follows the investigation of the journalist, “Traces of Sin” doe snot focus on finding who the real murderer is. Instead, as the director has pointed out in one interview, the film wants to show that everyone can commit sins in their lives. No one is perfect, but no one is totally evil either.

Kei Ishikawa – born in 1977 in Aichi, Kei Ishikawa studied at the National Film School in Łódź, Poland. His film ‘Gukoroku – Traces of Sin’ (2016) was selected for the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival. It won the Silver Award at the Shindo Kaneto Awards and earned him Best New Director at the Yokohama Film Festival and Japanese Professional Movie Awards. With the Hong Kong omnibus narrative “Ten Years” becoming a surprise hit in 2015, it might not come as a surprise that the concept – envisioning the near future of one’s country – inspired various versions in Asia.
