Kristen Welker made her debut as moderator of NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday morning and kicked things off with a daring choice of interviewee: Donald Trump. The former president rattled off a list of full and partial untruths, leaving many viewers and members of the media confused and disappointed.
At various points, Trump claimed “millions of illegal immigrants coming into our country, flooding our cities, flooding the countryside,” that a “record” number of terrorists have been caught “this year” and that the U.S. “gave $85 billion worth of equipment to the Taliban” this year alone.
His statements included numerous lies and exaggerations. Also rattling many who saw the interview is what was seen as how little Welker seemed to push back against Trump’s claims. As political scientist Norm Ornstein tweeted, “Oy. Trump says the Capitol Police testified against Nancy Pelosi, and then burned all the evidence. Lie upon lie upon lie.

The backlash over CNN’s Donald Trump town hall, held Wednesday night in front of an audience made almost entirely of Trump supporters, showed no signs of dying down on Thursday. Which is likely why Anderson Cooper attempted to quell that backlash with a commentary during Thursday night’s episode of his CNN primetime show.
But just like the event itself, Cooper provoked far more criticism than agreement. Cooper, one critic said, acted like “a gaslighting scold.” And the event, another said, is “a desperate ploy for ratings by a network in crisis.” Oops.
The backlash is difficult to summarize, but the main thrust is that critics argue the event was an irresponsible mistake at every level. Complaints touched on the friendly audience, on the fact that aside from any mention of the 2020 election, moderator Kaitlan Collins allowed Trump to lie for minutes at a time with no pushback, and...

Updated with Trump addressing airports remark: President Donald Trump took some lumps over Thursday’s remark about Continental Army taking over the airpots during the Revolutionary War in 1775. Today he explained what happened.
“Yeah, the teleprompter went out,” Potus told reporters this morning. “It kept going on. And then, at the end, it just went out. It went kaput. So I could have said — and, actually, right in the middle of that sentence, it went out. And that’s not a good feeling, when you’re standing in front of millions of millions of people on television. And, I don’t know what the final count was, but that went all the way back to the Washington Monument. And I guess the rain knocked out the teleprompter.”‘
Well, that settles that.
Happily, he did not go on to suggest that the same thing happened to President Lincoln as he delivered the Gettysburg Address.

Cher hit up Washington, D.C. this week on her tour, and this review will tell you a lot about how the flow of a Cher show goes, with a great deal of monologues and history from the Queen. One thing that stuck out a bit was Cher seeming to throw some shade at Mother Monster about why she talks to her audience. “Gaga doesn’t do that. I’d rather stand and talk than have some chick vomit on me. Call me old fashioned. I’m just that funny kind of gal.”
How exactly would a Goonies sequel work?

While Anderson Cooper only recently opened up publicly that he is gay, it's certainly nothing new to him. "I've always known I was gay from the time I was a little kid," the CNN anchor told the Huffington Post's Michelangelo Signorile on Monday. "I can't remember a time when I wasn't aware of it, even before I knew what it was or the name of it." What's more, Cooper believes "being gay is a blessing" and he "couldn't be more proud" of his sexuality. The 45-year-old journalist also talked about the 1988 suicide of his brother, Carter, and how that tragedy influenced his career. "If you feel like an outsider, you tend to observe things a...

Anderson Cooper said that "being gay is a blessing" and he "couldn't be more proud" of his sexuality in an exclusive chat with HuffPost Gay Voices Editor-at-Large Michelangelo Signorile.
The award-winning CNN anchor, 45, joined Signorile's SiriusXM OutQ program from Rome, where he is covering the Vatican conclave. In what was deemed as Cooper's only full-length interview ahead of his scheduled appearance at the 2013 GLAAD Media Awards in New York on March 16, the CNN anchor spoke at length about coming out both personally and professionally, being honored with the prestigious Vito Russo Award and the pain of his brother's suicide. Alan Cumming has a few suggestions for the Vatican when it comes to choosing Pope Benedict XVI's replacement.
"If I was going to rebrand the Catholic Church, as much as I despise what it stands for, I would say get a black person -- well, first I would say get a woman or a gay -- but then I'd say get a black person or a Hispanic person," the openly gay actor tells New York Magazine.
Media speculation over who could replace Pope Benedict XVI has been rampant since news of the pontiff's resignation broke Feb. 11. But Cumming did not mince words when it came to the outgoing pontiff, saying he was "horrified by his stance on gays."
"I was reading today that the Pope arrived in a Christian Dior cape with red Dorothy shoes and blah blah, and he tells us that it’s wrong to be gay,...

In what is likely to be one of the best looking films of next year, Jake Gyllenhaal will star with Hugh Jackman in Prisoners, about a small town carpenter whose daughter and her best friend are kidnapped, and the failure of the police to find them. Bonus: Jake Gyllanhaal plays a cop, so there's uniform potential.
The Weather Channel is going to name winter storms, much like hurricanes are named. They claim it's because names make people pay more attention to the danger, but mostly I think it's because you can only use "snowmaggedon" so many times before people tune you out.
Chris Kluwe is on the cover of Out this month, which is a pretty fast turnaround. It's worth checking out just for the photos of him in jeans riding low on his hips with no underwear visible, but he also talks about equality, and how to write a great zinger.

A pilot who claims to have been John Travolta’s gay lover has reportedly spilled the beans to the tabloids about their sexual past.
In an exclusive interview with the National Enquirer, 62-year-old Doug Gotterba, who allegedly dated the "Saturday Night Fever" star for six years in the 1980s, has come forward with explicit details of his relationship with the 58-year-old actor.
According to RadarOnline, Gotterba -- who reportedly was Travolta's personal pilot -- claims in the interview the actor's "sexual appetite was insatiable, that he wanted to make a sex tape, and that he enjoyed cavorting with multiple male partners at a time."
Gotterba has also claimed that the married movie star had admitted in 1992 that he was still attracted to men -- months after he had tied the knot with actress Kelly Preston.

I try to avoid Fox News, and I'm not a fan of Bill O'Reilly. Anyone who has read anything I've written on The Huffington Post is probably not surprised by either of those facts. But as the mother of a self-identified gay 7-year-old son who has a crush on Glee's Blaine, the most recent media controversy involving Mr. O'Reilly caught my attention.
In his show on Thursday, April 19, Mr. O'Reilly and his guests discussed a recent episode of Glee portraying a transgender teen, and how the show as a whole was encouraging teenagers to experiment with "alternative lifestyles." Oh, where to begin?
Being gay is not an "alternative lifestyle." Are the majority of people gay? No, of course not. The majority of people don't have green eyes. The majority of people aren't left-handed. The majority of people aren't double-jointed. But I don't know of any organizations devoted to forcibly implanting...

Disney is making plans to turn Mr. Toad's Wild Ride into a feature film. Obviously, they're hoping for another Pirates of The Caribbean and not another Haunted Mansion.Speaking of Disney, "Gay Day" is coming to Disney World, which means you can expect a lot of hand-wringing and banner flying. In today's unnecessary remake item, a feature version of The Rockford Files is on the way, with Vince Vaughn taking over for James Garner. Hopefully without electric cars.In ratings news, the gayish Smash was down to a series low.

RuPaul was recently interviewed by Michelangelo Signorile on his Sirius OutQ radio show and clearly demonstrated how completely out-of-touch he is with the reality that most full-time trans people (i.e., transsexuals) actually live in.
Before I continue, I want to make clear that my opinions expressed here are directed toward RuPaul exclusively, not toward drag performers in general, nor toward drag as a concept or an art form.
The truth is that RuPaul's drag persona is not a real person but a fictional character he portrays as a performer to make money, no more a reflection of true reality than Captain Kirk or Stephen Colbert, who, like RuPaul, also uses his real name when portraying a caricatured, fictional character created and performed solely for entertainment purposes. As RuPaul himself has said of his drag performances, "I do it once in a while for fun, but I really only do it when I'm getting paid,...

For those who have never been the same since Punk'd went off the air, there's good news.Danile Radcliffe will host Saturday Night Live on January 14th. Expect wand jokes.Bond producers believe that Daniel Craig (who's currently shooting his third Bond adventure), can surpass Roger Moore's record and make eight films in the franchise. TV Guide Network has two reality series ready to go: Hollywood Moms Night, starring Alison Sweeney and Ali Landry, and Wilson Phillips: Still Holding On. Below you can see the promo for the trailer of Prometheus. Wait ... seriously?

Weekend Birthdays! Out Broadway hottie Matt Doyle is 24, Armistead Maupin is 67, and Alan Ball is 54. B&S may be gone, but in wonderful, life-affirming news, Happy Endings has been renewed for a second season! You know what would make me squee for days? The Saddest Gay Week Ever
Around the AfterElton.com offices we frequently refer to the "AfterElton community," but the reality of how much the site has grown to become an actual community truly hit home this week when we learned that Logan, one of our longtime members, had tragically been killed in a car accident.
We only learned that Logan had died two weeks ago when his friend Emi joined the site to post the awful news. She said she had done so because Logan (known as Fergie to his offline friends) had frequently spoken of those he'd met on AfterElton and how much the friends he'd met here had meant to him.
I can honestly say I was blown away hearing this. A gay guy living in the highlands of Scotland spoke fondly and frequently enough of the site that his straight friend thought to come here and tell us the news?...

Consider It The Condensed Version Of Bgwe!
I've been editing AfterElton.com for nearly five years now and I have to say this has been one of the wildest weeks I've had in a long time, if not ever.
What do you mean this doesn't look like my avatar picture? Try squinting a little. More. More. A little More. Oh, **#% you!
It kicked off Sunday morning when I did a post about Betty White's hosting of Saturday Night Live, and especially about the Scared Straight sketch.
Sunday night not only saw Jordan and Dan Pious winning The Amazing Race, but an episode of The Family Guy that had emails flying in and comments being posted on the site before it had even aired on the west coast. When I realized it was the "Quagmire's Dad" episode, I remembered Seth MacFarlane had mentioned it to me when I interviewed him last January.

"I challenge you to a strip-off at the next Broadway Bares!" "Oh, it's on, Doogie!"
Above you can see the first teaser pic from the upcoming Neil Patrick Harris guest shot on Glee. Hmmm ... tense. Irish "TV presenter" Brendan Courtney, who hosts a show called Off the Rails, opens up about the physical and verbal abuse he suffered in school for being gay. Can our UK and Irish readers fill us in on him? Does "TV presenter" mean Ryan Seacrest?...

Chicago – “Thank you for coming out today,” said Idaho senator Larry Craig at an August ’07 press conference. He had been arrested two months prior on the charges of “lewd conduct” in a men’s restroom. This was the latest of many similar allegations aimed at the politician, who had spent his career hiding in the closet, while refusing to help pass legislation that would protect gay rights.
According to Kirby Dick’s galvanizing documentary, “Outrage,” Craig is merely one of many closeted politicians on Capitol Hill whose repressed lifestyle has led them to vote hypocritically. The film argues that if these key figures in America’s political establishment outed themselves, then their voting records would change dramatically. Most of the politicians Dick outs are white, male conservatives who seem to be punishing themselves because of their own impulses. As a result, they are also punishing every single gay American.
