The Super Bowl halftime show’s sign language interpreter has been praised for ‘stealing the show’ during Rihanna’s performance.
Justina Miles was tasked with interpreting Rihanna’s half time performance for the 2023 Super Bowl on Sunday night (12 February), and viewers were impressed.
The 20-year-old is the first female deaf performer at the show and is also the first deaf person to ever perform the pre-show’s “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” sung by actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, reports CNBC.
Videos showing Miles’ performance have since gone viral; the interpreter can be seen doing sign language to Rihanna’s lyrics while dancing along enthusiastically.
“Justina Miles stole the show as Rihanna’s Super Bowl halftime show Asl performer!” wrote one viewer on Twitter.
“I didn’t watch the Super Bowl, but I Love this performance,” said John Amaechi OBE, “@rihanna is even better with Asl by Justina Miles.”

ESPN, Disney's $10 billion sports media empire, has always had cozy relationships with the stars it covers. ESPN Books has published tomes penned by athletes, like John Amaechi's Man in the Middle. Myriad others have appeared on the network's SportsCenter commercials. In 2006, ESPN even took an ownership interest in the Arena Football League that included airing its games. Around the same time, unscripted shows featuring Barry Bonds and Bobby Knight caused hand-wringing. The network's ombudsman, George Solomon, wrote then that the partnerships are "dismaying" and "[boggle] the mind."

Michael, a former Missouri defensive lineman and a NFL prospect, came out as gay on Feb. 9. And after his brave announcement, Jason Collins, Chad Johnson, and many more athletes from several different sports took to Twitter to praise Michael’s courage and offer him support.
With Michael Sam announcing he is gay on Feb. 9, there is a ton of skepticism over how he’ll be received if he’s drafted into the NFL in May. But judging from the support the former Missouri defensive lineman has received in the wake of his announcement, the welcoming might be much warmer than we all first thought.

Former NBA star John Amaechi came out of the closet after his playing career was over, but with the recent announcements by celebs in other fields ... The full Frank Ocean interview with The Guardian is out, and it's worth a read. Several passages really stuck with me, but I really liked this one about why he put the liner notes out like he did. "It was important for me to know that when I go out on the road and I do these things, that I'm looking at people who are applauding because of an appreciation for me. I don't have many secrets, so if you know that, and you're still applauding … it may be some sort of sick validation but it was important to me. When I heard people talking about certain, you know, 'pronouns' in the writing of the record, I just wanted to – like I said on the post – offer some clarity; clarify, before the fire got too wild and the conversation became too unfocused and murky." Words of wisdom more than a few celebrities could learn from.

But no doubt many of the people that Chris Colfer is talking about at the WeHo Hollywood experience managed the walk of shame. Except since it's in Los Angeles, most of them just had to make it to and from the car.

"I apologize to anyone who was offended."
Aah, that passive-aggressive non-apology apology. We've become used to seeing it in press releases after celebrity f**k-ups, but now the world seems to have caught on to how meaningless a statement it is.
These days, it's not enough to just go through the motions. In 2011 we require more than a token statement when a celeb tries to convince us that something was "taken out of context," or is "not what's in my heart."
Tracy Morgan is the latest apologetic celeb, and he seems to be working the hell out of his apology cycle, from meeting with GLAAD and Glbt teens, to loving a hypothetical gay son, to going back to the scene of his anti-gay tirade to apologize there.
His eagerness to make amends means he's either truly sincere in his apology ... or he's scared sh*tless about the future of his career.

Sean Avery
When New York Rangers forward Sean Avery agreed to make a video statement in favor of New York marriage equality the last people in the world we expected to stand against him was Uptown Sports a Canadian hockey management agency.
In a tweet against Avery's statement, Uptown Sports vice president Todd Reynolds said, "Very sad to read Sean Avery's misguided support of same-gender 'marriage.' Legal or not, it will always be wrong. To clarify. This is not hatred or bigotry towards gays. It is not intolerance in any way shape or form. I believe we are all equal... But I believe in the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman. This is my personal viewpoint. I Do not hate anyone."
Reynolds later went on Cybulski & Company on Tsn Radio 105 to stand behind his statements:
"There's certainly a voice for the other side on this particular issue.

Gay-Nerds received two e-mails from insiders in the company. The first was from someone who insisted that no offense was intended, and it was all in good fun. First off, I’d like to thank snicks for keeping the Memes up while I was slaving away in retail over the Black Friday holiday. I’m completely exhausted, but I’m going to try to dazzle you!
Also, so many of you have emailed, Facebooked, Pm’d and tweeted me birthday wishes, I couldn’t possibly thank you all individually, but please know I do appreciate it.
On to the news, such that it is on a holiday weekend. I’m not really sure that I appreciate the tone over at TV Guide where they are wondering why Glee has become “the St. Kurt show.” Seriously, we all endured a full season of that Puck/Finn/Quinn/Terri baby drama that had nothing to do with the glee club, and you want to whine about three Kurt episodes that are literally “ripped from the headlines?”

First of all, congrats to everyone who found my hidden message in yesterday's meme. If you didn't get it, here's a hint: it's an acrostic! Now let's have a little fun with today's meme. Above you can see 10 of my favorite 80's singers. How many can you name?
I hope all of of our U.S. readers had a great Thanksgiving. A good portion of mine was spent arguing with my mother, who insisted and would not back down from her assertion that Bette Midler was once married to ... Ernest Borgnine. Even a trip to Wikipedia and IMDb would not dissuade her, as those sites only proved there was a "cover-up" going on.
Anyway, it was a busy Thanksgiving at the cinema, and the estimates for the holiday weekend are in. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is tops, raking in another $90 million, while Tangled is over-performing expectations (most likely...

I know he wrote it in a blog post, but what I wouldn’t give to hear Alan Cumming, in that delightful accent of his, telling President Obama “We keep hearing that Obama is an ally, that ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ will end under his watch, but what do we actually get? Diddly squat thus far on a federal level, and in addition to that some very offensive statements that would have made the Republicans look bad."
MTV, I know you sign the paychecks around here, but you make it really hard for me to take you seriously with headlines like ‘Runaway’ Solidifies Kanye West As The Greatest Pop Star Of This Generation. I couldn’t even make it though the piece of self indulgent crap.
CBS, having already mined Twitter for all the show ideas it can come up with has devised a show about celebrity namesakes.

Monday was National Coming Out Day. The Proposition 8 lawsuit sits in waiting, as the case for same-sex marriage in California has a pending hearing at a federal court of appeals before possibly moving on to the Supreme Court. The U.S. military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy is its own political firestorm at the moment and is on the cusp of abolishment. New York gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino mouths off that "your children" would be much better off if they are not "brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option." A sobering rash of recent suicides among youngsters reminds us that bullying, lack of tolerance, and the notion that being gay is bad are still far too prevalent in our society.
Thus, it seems an appropriate time to highlight that same lack of tolerance that has dismayingly infected the world of major league sports. Why should it matter where the NBA,...

Dance obviously does a body good.
Here at Twitterwatch, we never sleep. We're always on the prowl for the latest from your favorite celebrities around the world. And it's a good thing because some of the best stuff comes when celebrities do take some time off for themselves, often on the opposite side of the world.
For example, a reader recently pointed out So You Think You Can Dance Australia's Season One runner up Rhys Bobridge. He's a dancer, he's a drag performer, he's an activist. And he looks good in a Speedo when he gets a spring day off. But like many of us, he doesn't necessarily function in the mornings.

Tonight's episode of Glee, "Grilled Cheesus" is a tear jerker. Ryan Murphy is going for a big social message like Norman Lear used to do in shows like All In the Family. The explanation for the photograph at the top, plus many other spoilers for tonight are in this interview. Ryan Murphy says that Jonathan Groff will definitely be back on Glee for the back nine episodes, once he becomes available after his commitments in London's West End. He also teases that while everyone else is convinced that Glee's doing Michael Jackson or Prince for the Super Bowl, he doesn't want to be that predictable. Here's Puck (Mark Salling) performing Billy Joel's "Only the Good Die Young" from tonight's episode.

Obviously, Daddy was home when this smiling picture was taken.
Here at Twitterwatch we spend a lot of time walking in other people's shoes, so we know something about feeling not quite like ourselves. Whether things are just a bit off emotionally or physically, it can really throw off your game if you're not feeling quite like your normal, upbeat self.
Over the months, we've all fallen in love with the conversations that Wil Wheaton has with his dog via Twitter. I'm constantly amazed at how much nuance Wil fits into 140 characters, and I feel like I know his pets. At the top of the page, we finally get to meet Seamus Wheaton, the dog who denies chasing his own tail. And below you can see that he's very aware of his environment, and knows when Daddy has to leave.
Dog: Why is the suitcase out?! Me: I'm going to Vancouver.

If you haven't gotten around to watching the True Blood finale (like me), it's still safe to read this interview with the out Denis O'Hare. Most telling is that he doesn't see his character as a villain: In my mind, he’s not the villain. He’s the hero. I play him like a hero. He has his agenda, and his agenda is correct. He has people he loves and he has desires and needs. If you look at it from his point of view — if Eric, Sookie, and Bill are the villains — they do terrible things to him. They double-cross him, they lie to him, they use him. They kill his lover of 700 years. They take from him, then spurn his offerings.

How cool is it an out player get's to christen the arena? Big Glee news: the replacement for Idina Menzel as coach of Vocal Adrenaline is none other than Cheyenne Jackson! The new coach will be named Shannon Beiste, played by actress Dot Jones. That should provide some female rivalry for Sue Sylvester, and mayhem in the lockerroom for shy Finn.

Let’s get this over with: According to criminal defense attorneys that Salon.com talked to, Mario Lavandeira, aka Perez Hilton, is potentially guilty of distributing child pornography, and it doesn’t matter if the image was Photoshopped or not. Even putting 17-year-old Miley’s head on an of-age model’s naked body is a felony, and if prosecuted and convicted (and it’s almost always prosecuted), he’s looking at jail time and having to register as a sex offender. And because it went out electronically, it’s a federal offense with a 15-year mandatory sentence if convicted. There is no punch line to this, it’s just slimy.

Chris Hardwick (comedian): Funny. Confident. Geeky. Smart. Cute. Straight? Minor obstacle.
Dax Shepard (ex-Punk'd prankster-turned-Parenthood actor): I confess: My obsession with Kristen Bell was just an elaborate ruse to get closer to her hot and talented boyfriend.
Ryan Eggold (actor, 90210): Hot for teacher.
Matthew Bomer. It's all about the eyes. The abs don't hurt, but it's mostly the eyes.

Scott Evans, Brad Goreski, Matt Morris
Brad Goreski — Cute as a button with impeccable style. Brad also really seems to know who he is and can hold his own next to Rachel Zoe. That's hot.
Chris Colfer — He never did anything for me until I met him at the GLAAD awards and found him adorable.

Yesterday, retired NBA player John Amaechi shared their choices and today we have last year's #7 man, Broadway star Cheyenne Jackson who also shares a little about why he chose each man!
Alexander Skarsgard, Mark Sanchez, Mike Woods
1) Alexander Skarsgard. Saw him in the gym locker room in WeHo ... Holy wet towel, Batman!
2) Mark Sanchez. New York Jet's Qb, dayum!
3) Mike Woods. New York Fox anchor and one of my drinking buddies.
4) Liev Schreiber. Best actor in NYC, end of story.

Up first, retired NBA player, motivational speaker and Glbt activist John Amaechi! Take it away, John!
1) John Barrowman, since Torchwood and Doctor Who he made “omnisexual" the new category to aspire to in England!
2) Neil Patrick Harris, as I had a drunken conversation at some awards ceremony or another then fell for him as Dr. Horrible.
3) Wilson Cruz, because he ages in reverse, apparently...
John Barrowman, Russell Tovey, Gabriel Garcia Bernal
4) Zachary Quinto, as Spock rather than as in Heroes.

Ricky Martin recently came out about being a homosexual. Not exactly earth shattering news, but still a commendable act of personal courage for the father of two.
So which Hollywood celebrity is going to come out on May 5?
People Magazine allegedly has the exclusive and the celeb is booked on several major talk shows that week including "The View."
PR powerhouse Howard Bragman, who has successfully -- some might add brilliantly -- orchestrated several celeb outings in the past decade talked about his next coming out project at the GLAAD Media Awards red carpet Sunday (Apr. 17).
Bragman -- the coming out king of Hollywood -- doesn't want to speculate on who it will be (that would kind of ruin his well-planned surprise, wouldn't it) but In the past he's helped NFL defensive lineman Isera Tualo, Lpga star Rosie Jones, Wnba star Sheryl Swoops and retired NBA center John Amaechi come out.

Johnny Weir
Welcome back to TwitterWatch, our weekly update of tweeted fun!
The Olympics are still going strong, despite gay fave Johnny Weir missing out on a medal:
But if you’re looking to cheer him up, watch the platitudes … John Amaechi is on the warpath:
Luckily, it looks like Sam Sparro might have a found an awesome new sport right up Johnny’s alley:
And of course the Olympics also has to compete with everyone’s fave TV show, American Idol. Just ask Ross Mathews:
And it looks like Alec Mapa shares the sentiment:
Meanwhile, Cheyenne Jackson had a bit of a run in at the dentist:
And this is big! One Life to Live star Scott Evans is finally on Twitter!
Scott Evans
But when it comes to early call times, I think Ugly Betty’s Michael Urie wins:
Ongina
And finally, Ongina’s closing us out...
