In October 2010, Cheyenne Jackson told Out Magazine that he and Monte Lapka had filed for a domestic partnership in New York State during the summer of 2010. They had been romantic partners for over a decade before that. In September 2011, shortly after same-sex marriage was legalized in New York State, Jackson and Lapka got married in a ceremony on a Hamptons beach.
