Let us say farewell to Superstore, arguably one of the most underrated sitcoms in recent years.
“From its premiere in 2015, Superstore never seemed to get the kind of attention it deserved, from audiences or critics. That made every season it was renewed feel like a gift. The show was just as funny as others in its league, but maybe a bit more subdued.”

In a competitive situation, Paul Lee’s recently launched independent studio wiip has acquired the rights to Gimlet Media’s new scripted podcast, Sandra, to develop for premium television. Gimlet Pictures (Homecoming), the TV and film production arm of Gimlet, will produce the series, its first project under the banner launched earlier this year.
The seven-episode podcast, which launched all episodes Wednesday, April 18, is set five minutes in the future and follows Helen Perez, a new hire at Orbital Industries, the company behind Sandra, the world’s most intuitive virtual assistant. As one of thousands of Sandra operators, Helen spends her days peeking into the world of Sandra users and helping them navigate their questions and demands. One problem: the users don’t know she’s real. Along the way, Helen’s own world becomes more difficult to navigate, too, as she struggles to manage a divorce while keeping her boss Dustin happy.

Rupert Murdoch is cashing out. The idea of 21st Century Fox being consumed by Disney in a $52.4 billion all-stock deal has shocked Hollywood, where industry players never thought they’d see the powerful Fox behemoth be largely consumed, rather than do the consuming. But as one insider noted, Murdoch is looking toward his final legacy — and turning in his chips while the getting’s good.
“Rupert is 86. He’s looking toward setting up [his family],” one observer said. The industry is rapidly changing, and as the Disney deal currently values the 21st Century Fox assets at more than $66 billion, it’s probably never going to get better than that. Fox shareholders, including the Murdochs, could hold around 25 percent of a new mega-Disney, which will now be supremely positioned to face off with Netflix and other giants in the new media landscape.

In 2003, after one critically-acclaimed—but thinly-watched—season, Joss Whedon’s sci-fi/western series Firefly was canceled by their network, Fox. Now, fourteen years and one movie later, fans haven’t stopped clamoring for a revival. Even the show’s lead, Nathan Fillion, still pines for his life on the starship Serenity. In 2006, the same network canceled another critical hit: Arrested Development. The cancellation drew the ire of the shows (small, but) passionate fan base. The loud, persistent demands for a renewal were amplified when the show became a post-network hit on Netflix. Those demands were eventually met: ten years after the show’s first premiere, Netflix released a

During a Nov. 15 appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “Arrested Development” star Alia Shawkat revealed that Season 5 of the cult sitcom had just wrapped filming. Unfortunately, that announcement was sandwiched between two dark media scandals featuring members of the show’s ensemble cast.
The first was a series of tweets from comedian Charlyne Yi on Oct. 15, who accused David Cross (who plays eccentric Tobias Fünke) of making racist comments toward her. Cross’ apology was cynical, blaming the incident on playing a “southern redneck character” that she didn’t understand, and lashing out against social media followers who called him out on the incident. Then came two allegations of sexual harassment leveled against Jeffrey Tambor (“Arrested’s” cruel patriarch George Bluth Sr.), one from a former assistant and the other from a fellow “Transparent” actress.

Days after Netflix fired Kevin Spacey from “House of Cards” and canceled an upcoming Louis C.K. standup special, both disgraced stars can still be found on the streaming service.
Five pre-existing Louis C.K. comedy specials, including this spring’s “Louis C.K. 2017,” continue to live on the site, available for viewing.
Meanwhile, four projects still pop up when searching for Spacey’s name, including “House of Cards” and the documentary “Now: In the Wings on a World Stage,” a behind the scenes look at Spacey starring in the Bridge Project production of “Richard III.”
That’s not to say that the streaming service isn’t taking a hit: Netflix scrapped plans to release the Spacey starrer “Gore,” a Gore Vidal biopic that had already finished shooting. And it may have to start over on Season 6 of “House of Cards,” with Robin Wright now as star, even though that show had already been shooting.

“House of Cards” was built on the backs of three men and carried — beyond its original designs — by one woman. What began as a collaboration between David Fincher and Beau Willimon, starring Kevin Spacey as the power-hungry politico Frank Underwood, soon became “The Robin Wright Show,” as the actress made the most of a character who had more qualms, better plans, and a stronger arc than her husband’s.
But even Claire can’t hold “House of Cards” together anymore. Though fans needn’t look beyond a disappointing and dull fifth season for reason to celebrate a fixed ending — Season 6 will be the last — there are reasons beyond a dip in quality to let this story die, and they begin with an actor on the outs, Kevin Spacey.

Netflix’s new animated comedy “Big Mouth” takes on adolescence from a distinctly adult point of view, tracking the middle school adventures of a pack of tweens whose bodies are changing in crazy ways. Fortunately, their antics are brought to life by the crème de la crème of voice acting — starting with the powerhouse himself, co-creator Nick Kroll.
It wasn’t a surprise when Kroll, an executive producer of the show, recruited his friend and Broadway co-star John Mulaney to the roster. After that, the voice cast list seems to be a handful of your favorite SNL alums and comedy icons. Even Dick Whitman makes a small, yet savory appearance.

Jim Carrey is reuniting with his “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” director Michel Gondry to star in a new half-hour comedy for Showtime. “Kidding,” which has been given a 10-episode order, will represent Carrey’s first series regular role in more than two decades.
“Kidding” stars Carrey as Jeff, also known as beloved children’s TV personality Mr. Pickles. Here’s the logline: “A beacon of kindness and wisdom to America’s impressionable young minds and the parents who grew up with him – [Jeff] also anchors a multimillion dollar branding empire. But when this beloved personality’s family – wife, two sons, sister and father – begins to implode, Jeff finds no fairy tale or fable or puppet will guide him through this crisis, which advances faster than his means to cope. The result: a kind man in a cruel world faces a slow leak of sanity as hilarious as it is heartbreaking.

Reality TV was supposed to bring about the demise of scripted television, when an influx of comparatively cheap-to-produce unscripted content like Survivor, The Amazing Race, and American Idol began dominating network and basic cable from 2000-2002. However, around this same time scripted series like The Sopranos, The Shield, The Wire, Arrested Development, and Six Feet Under hit the airwaves, signaling a new Golden Age of TV (or Peak TV, if you prefer).
Since their arrival, reality shows have dominated weekly TV ratings, but they most certainly have not destroyed either the half-hour or hour-long series. Instead, we're smack in the middle of a scripted TV boom. According to Variety, back in 2002 (when The Shield debuted) there were only 182 scripted series on TV, but in 2017 (to-date) there are an astounding 455 have aired (and 79 more are yet to debut this year).

Will “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” repeat its win for Best Variety Talk Series and writing, now that newbies “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” are competing with more anti-Trump fodder?
“Saturday Night Live’ is up for a whopping 22 nominations, including several hosts nominated as Guest Actors and Actresses, although the late Carrie Fisher could take a sentimental win in comedy for “Catastrophe,” and Matthew Rhys and Riz Ahmed could cancel each other out as guests on “Girls.”

When it comes to picking main title themes this season, Emmy voters are heading toward either FX’s “Feud” or Netflix’s “Stranger Things.” Both tap Hollywood musical nostalgia in depicting the rivalry between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford (nominated Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange, respectively) in the early ’60s and ’80s sci-fi in the Duffer Brothers’ creepy thriller.
On the other hand, HBO’s “Westworld” has a haunting theme, National Geographic’s “Genius” offers a brief but adrenaline-pumping opener, Masterpiece’s “Victoria” contains a feisty bit of classicism, and “The Good Fight” gets explosive in the debut launch of CBS All Access.

The idea of a Hollywood star getting some indie street cred by taking a massive pay cut to support the work of an edgy, up-and-coming auteur is hardly a new concept, but describes at least half the films at Sundance. However, the films of Josh and Benny Safdie are more than their somewhat simplified reputation as gritty New York filmmakers, and the decision by Robert Pattinson to star in the pair’s new film isn’t your run-of-the-mill case of an actor looking for street cred.
The Safdies’ distinctive guerilla-style approach to filmmaking on busy streets, often with amateur performers – who embody the underbelly of the city – is a cinematic world based on complete authenticity and the product of an immersive creative process that requires, as Benny described it, “being put through the ringer.”

We live in the Golden Age of TV…revivals that is. Well, also the original TV is also pretty good, but there's no denying it that reviving a TV show is the hottest trend in development right now, thanks to the success of The X-Files, Gilmore Girls and even Arrested Development and The Comeback before them. In the coming months, the TV landscape will feature new episodes of Roseanne, The X-Files, Will & Grace, Arrested Development, American Idol, Trading Spaces, Cash Cab—the list of shows that were once canceled and now live again goes on. And it's certainly exciting to see what these characters are up to and how the showrunners will undo some of the previous series finale pickles they created for...

As part of its approach to original programming, Netflix has given new seasons to several shows -- including Arrested Development, The Killing, Longmire, and Degrassi: The Next Generation -- that had previously aired on and been cancelled by terrestrial networks. Now, it is utilizing that strategy once again, but this time, the canceled show in its sights doesn’t come from a TV channel -- it comes from Netflix itself. The Svod platform has revealed that it will bring back Sense8, which it canceled earlier this month, for a two-hour special that will be released in 2018.
Sense8, which came from the minds of The Matrix co-directors The Wachowski Sisters, gathered a passionate fanbase, who plead with Netflix to carry on with the show after its cancellation was announced on June 1. Netflix initially insisted that Sense8 was done for good, but the streaming titan appears to have since reversed its decision.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Twin Peaks” Episode 6, “Don’t Die.”]
While “Twin Peaks” continues to play the long game when it comes to its various mysteries, Sunday’s episode at least offered a tantalizing carrot to viewers one-third of the way through the season. Fans finally got to see whom Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) has been speaking to all of these years: The never-before-seen Diane, naturally portrayed by David Lynch favorite Laura Dern.
Diane was Cooper’s secretary from his earliest days in the FBI and the recipient of all of his audio reports and musings. She never appeared on screen, but he confided everything in her. Many speculated long before the show premiered that Dern, who had never been a part of the original “Twin Peaks” cast, would get the plum role of Diane.
The scene, while brief, is satisfying in its details. Albert’s (Miguel Ferrer) important work that evening is to follow up on that promise that he “knows where she drinks,...

“Big Little Lies.” “Twin Peaks.” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
These three projects don’t make up half of Laura Dern’s 2017 body of work, but they do represent defining moments in the year’s entertainment landscape. Few movies or TV shows have been met with as much anticipation or scrutiny, and this level of intense speculation can be tough on an actor who’s been sworn to secrecy.
“A woman came up to me and said, ‘You don’t even tell your kids what part you played? Is that painful as a mother to have to lie to your kids?’ And I got so flustered!” Dern said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “I’m not trying to hurt people by not talking about it!”

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Case Files,” the fifth episode of “Twin Peaks.”]
Almost a third of the way through its season, “Twin Peaks” has given a few more clues about where the show is heading, and it doesn’t look good. In fact, we’re afraid that history may repeat itself if Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) doesn’t snap out of his Dougie stupor and get back to solving crimes and eating pie.
Among a cast of 217 people, the show has brought back a number of familiar faces but has also introduced new players, some of whom have already met their untimely ends. In Episode 5, however, two new characters have given cause for concern, mainly because they’re giving off serious deja vu.

I don't think I'm saying anything Earth-shattering when I say that Arrested Development was one of the funniest things to air on television. It was dense and jam-packed with jokes, references, background gags, recurring bits, and metatextual humor that it would be impossible to see every single funny thing - even if you watched the entire series five times in a row (though, to be fair, I can think... With “Twin Peaks” revived after 26 years, and “Arrested Development” finding new life on Netflix years after it was canceled on Fox, there is perhaps reason to keep hope alive for “Hannibal.” Fans were disappointed when NBC canceled the series after three seasons, but chatter has stayed constant about a possible return for Mads Mikkelsen as the titular cannibal, and Hugh Dancy as the FBI agent with whom he shares a deadly, bromantic connection.

5.23 Lian Yu
After a year of twists, turns, false flags and some seriously angsty drama, the Arrow season 5 finale is its most climactic and costume-heavy episode to date. Not only did the finale pack enough hardcore action to satisfy any average fan’s bloodlust, but the ageing series found yet another compelling way to leave fans on the hook until Arrow season six kicks off in October.
Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the battle on Lian Yu or the ultimate Arrow cliffhanger, let’s acknowledge for one final time the shoehorned existence of the flashbacks. Sci-fi is often a testing ground for our fears. We take something that scares us, dress it up in a tentacled bug suit, and write a comforting story about how we defeated it. (Sometimes we write stories about how it defeated us, but those don’t tend to sell as well.)
From the very start of the genre, writers have shaped monsters from the stuff of their anxiety—hubristic scientific advance or disease or enemies from this war or that—and designed scenarios in which, through pluck, luck and brains, we send them packing or squash them flat. Twenty-seven years, one month, and seven days ago, David Lynch and Mark Frost unleashed “Twin Peaks” on the world. And it’s about to happen again.
We don’t know much about the new “Twin Peaks,” but we know this: It will be weird. Lynch’s cult classic always felt weird, toeing the line between ‘80s kitsch and ‘90s grunge in the year that bridged the two decades. Plus, you know, it was weird. The series’ dreamy sensibilities — and actual dreams, set in red rooms with dancing, mumbling, dead people — made for a uniquely provocative effect, often blending the hilarious and horrific.
