Richardson, winning for his work on Ted Lasso, was nominated against Jon Bernthal (The Bear), Luke Kirby (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Nathan Lane (Only Murders in the Building), Pedro Pascal (Saturday Night Live) and Oliver Platt (The Bear).
Judith Light, recognized for Poker Face, beat out Becky Ann Baker (Ted Lasso), Quinta Brunson (Saturday Night Live), Taraji P. Henson (Abbott Elementary), Sarah Niles (Ted Lasso) and Harriet Walter (Ted Lasso).
Richardson, who accepted the award from presenters Murray Bartlett and Nick Offerman, joked he “really didn’t think he was going to win this” and proceeded to take a speech out of his pocket to laughs from the audience, thanking his team, his family, Tim Robinson and the Detroit Lions. The red band teaser trailer for writer/director Macon Blair’s remake of the Troma cult classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here) made its way online this morning – and now you can check it out in the embed above! Don’t expect to see much more of Toxie himself than we’ve already seen in the shadowy publicity still… but it does show some of the gory damage he does to evil-doers.
This movie may have a much larger budget than the previous Toxie films, but it does look like Blair was able to retain the Troma tone and sense of humor.
Blair’s version of The Toxic Avenger stars Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a stereotypical weakling who works as a janitor at Garb-x health club and is diagnosed with a terminal illness that can only be cured by an expensive treatment that his greedy, power hungry employer refuses to pay for.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we take a look at comedy, including one category that seems to be a foregone conclusion.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Emmys voting has come to a close, and we won’t know the results for another four months (lolsob), but that hasn’t stopped me from overthinking the comedy races. We both have “Ted Lasso” winning Best Comedy Series, an outcome in which I feel pretty confident. We also both have “Ted” winning for Best Comedy Directing, where it won last year, despite a lot of people feeling really strongly that “The Bear” will emerge victoriously. But I don’t have “Ted” winning a single acting award, which feels kind of wrong. This is a series that has won multiple...

“Ted Lasso” is on track to win its third Emmy in a row for Best Comedy Series, per Gold Derby’s racetrack odds. Apple TV Plus’ feel-good show topped all other laffers this year with a whopping 21 Emmy nominations (see below), just one shy of the comedy record set by “30 Rock” in 2009. Fun fact: if “Ted Lasso” goes on to win trophy #3 this September, it’d be only the seventh comedy in Emmy history to prevail for its first three seasons on the air.
The most recent time this rare feat occurred was for “Modern Family,” which actually won five times consecutively (2010-14). Before that was “30 Rock” (first three seasons in 2007-09), “Frasier” (first five seasons in 1994-98), “Taxi” (first three seasons in 1979-81), “All in the Family” and “The Phil Silvers Show” (first three seasons in 1956-58).

Phil Dunster had an ace of a day on July 12. Not only did he score his first Emmy nomination — a best supporting actor nod for his work as cocky-turned-compassionate footballer Jamie Tartt on Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso — but the 31-year-old also toasted his good fortune by watching Grand Slam action at the All England Club.
“I’m looking over the courts now,” Dunster says as he surveys the scene during the men’s and women’s quarterfinal matches at Wimbledon as his brain volleys back and forth in an attempt to process the news on the eve of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which was called two days after this chat. “It’s an amazing day — and also quite a confusing day in the land of all things acting and the industry.”

The Toxic Avenger is a cult classic superhero black comedy film from 1984, written and directed by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. The film tells the story of Melvin, a nerdy janitor who falls into a vat of toxic waste and becomes a grotesque mutant with superhuman strength and a sense of justice. The film spawned three sequels, a musical, a cartoon series, and a loyal fan base.
Now, Legendary Pictures is bringing The Toxic Avenger back to the big screen with a reboot that promises to be a “contemporary reimagining” of the original. The reboot is written and directed by Macon Blair, who is known for his indie films such as I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore and Blue Ruin. The Little Show That Could did on Wednesday morning as the Amazon Freevee word-of-mouth sensation “Jury Duty” completed the most improbable run for top comedy series in recent memory (if not ever) by landing a spot among the big boys and girls – becoming the Andrea Riseborough of this Emmy season. Moreover, its its “star” James Marsden generated an equally surprising achievement with a supporting comedy actor nod today.
As recently as late June, “Jury Duty” stood 17th in the Gold Derby combined odds for top comedy series at 100/1. Its final odds placed at only 13th, still at 100/1. But the show that premiered in April on a streaming service few had even heard of made waves even immediately and kept right on making them through this wildly unlikely grassroots Emmy run. Sometimes, Emmy voters are a sentimental bunch after all. With so many beloved series bidding farewell this season, the nominators could have had a challenge in ensuring that they really did fete a lot of departing shows, but they did just that when the nominations were unveiled for the 75th annual Emmy Awards this morning.
Leading the pack for its final season is HBO’s “Succession,” with a whopping 27 nominations, a tally that bests its total last year of 25. An unbelievable 14 performers earned recognition including lead actors Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong, lead actress Sarah Snook, five supporting performers, and five guest performers. Its humongous nominations haul also includes bids for drama series, three for directing, and one in writing for Jesse Armstrong.

Lisa Ann Walter is hoping for a first-ever Emmy bid as season two of “Abbott Elementary” looks to up its awards success from the first outing, which won three Emmys. ABC’s mockumentary season comes from multi-hyphenate Quinta Brunson, who stars in the show as well as creates it, writes it, and produces it. It follows a group of public school teachers who work in one of the worst schools in the country but their love for teaching makes them stay to try and better the school and its students. The show is full of wonderful comedic performances, not least from “The Parent Trap” star Walter.
Walter plays second-grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti, who is close with Sheryl Lee Ralph‘s Barbara. Both teachers are veterans at Abbott Elementary, while some of Melissa’s connections outside of school are deemed questionable. Walter has a lot of fun as Melissa, who has...

“Ted Lasso” wrapped up its acclaimed three-season run on Wednesday, as the Apple TV+ comedy took its final bow as AFC Richmond came so close to taking home the Premiere League Title, winding up second behind Manchester United in an appropriately humbling and hopeful conclusion to an honest and meaningful series.
It was a bittersweet episode, filled with the heartfelt speeches and emotional character development that fans have come to know and love from the two-time Emmy winner for Outstanding Comedy Series.
After the final game, it came time for the eponymous Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) to bid farewell to the team and town he’s come to love and return home to his son in the US. However, despite his departure, fans quickly got a chance to see the next stage in the lives of all the other beloved characters.

Months after his life was suddenly cut short, Emmy winner Leslie Jordan has a chance to receive more TV academy love for his final small screen performance as Phil on Fox’s “Call Me Kat.” If he does land in this year’s Best Comedy Supporting Actor lineup, he will join a group of 12 other comedy or drama series regulars who posthumously achieved Emmy recognition. If he scores his second victory, he will make history as the first deceased male actor to win an Emmy for a continuing program.
“Call Me Kat” was the first and only multi-season series on which Jordan played a regular role. In his last few episodes, his character, who worked as the head baker at a Kentucky cat cafe, finally found true love with drag performer Jalen, aka Queen Dicktoria (John Griffin). Catherine Zeta-Jones could edge ever closer to becoming a member of the exclusive Egot club with her guest role in Netflix’s hit comedy series “Wednesday.” So far, only 18 people have achieved the feat of winning an Egot, which means winning the top prize in the four major entertainment fields of TV (Emmy), music (Grammy), film (Oscar), and theater (Tony).
Zeta-Jones is currently halfway there. She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for “Chicago” in 2003 and then won a Tony Award in 2010 for Best Actress in a Musical for “A Little Night Music.” She has never been up for a Grammy herself, although “Chicago” did win the Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. This award is given to the producers of the compilation soundtrack and not the specific performers of the songs themselves — performers are only credited as “various artists,...

This post contains spoilers for "Ted Lasso" season 3, episodes 5 and 7.
On "Ted Lasso," Jason Sudeikis' titular coach doesn't just inspire his team with down-home locker-room speeches. He's also been known to post the word "Believe" in all-caps on a yellow sign above his office. And woe betide the rogue kitman-turned-assistant-coach who would dare to tear up that sign on surveillance video.
For players of the fictional association football club, AFC Richmond, "believe" is a word that has become an ethos. In the past, Ted's team has tapped the sign for good luck the way someone might rub a statue, and they've also freaked out whenever the sign fell, as if it meant the universe was aligned against them.
When not tying private parts together, "Ted Lasso" season 3, episode 7, "The Strings That Bind Us," takes that one step further by having Ted briefly acknowledge a higher power, saying, "Sometimes you gotta...

The CBS comedy “Ghosts” has won over fans with its slick humor and the chemistry of its ensemble cast. Each character is so deeply established and entertaining that it would be easy to see why any given performer could be singled out as an audience favorite. One of the show’s shining stars is Danielle Pinnock, who plays Alberta Haynes, a jazz singer who was murdered and still doesn’t know by whom. The character’s self-proclaimed grandeur is hilarious, while Pinnock’s singing ability and the corresponding ego she gives Alberta is a joy to watch. She may be sitting in 28th place in our current Emmy odds for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, but Pinnock is absolutely in this race.

[This story contains spoilers for “Sunflowers,” episode six of Ted Lasso’s third season.]
Ted Lasso watchers have speculated that AFC Richmond player Colin Hughes (Billy Harris) is gay since early in season two, and those suspicions were confirmed in season three’s third episode.
With the April 19 episode, “Sunflowers,” Colin’s story took a big step forward as he acknowledged his sexuality — and the way he deals with living a closeted life among his teammates — to journalist Trent Crimm (James Lance) while the Richmond players had a night off in Amsterdam. Trent then shares with Colin that he’s gay as well, opening the door for Colin to — perhaps — tell his teammates and coaches.
“I think with Ted Lasso, you can understand exactly why footballers or sports stars would want to hide their true identity,” Harris tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Their work life is tough enough. … In this world, you’re never far from someone that’s going to make a joke like that.

Cherry Jones could score three Emmy nominations this year for her supporting turn on the Apple TV+ limited series “Five Days at Memorial” and her guest appearances on “Poker Face” and “Succession.” It’s those double guest bids, though, that would put her in rarefied air as the three-time Emmy winner would become the 11th person to earn drama and comedy guest acting nominations in the same year.
Since the guest categories as we know them were standardized in 1989, 10 people have pulled off this feat. Jack Gilford was the first, getting shortlisted that very year for “The Golden Girls” and “thirtysomething.” In 1991, Colleen Dewhurst won comedy guest actress for “Murphy Brown” and was nominated in drama for “Road to Avonlea.” Gwen Verdon snagged noms in 1993 for her guest spots on “Dream On” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,” while Marlee Matlin followed in 1994 with bids for “Seinfeld” and “Picket Fences.

Taraji P. Henson is currently perched in the top spot in the Best Comedy Guest Actress Emmy odds for her turn as Janine’s (Quinta Brunson) mother Vanetta in the penultimate episode of the second season of “Abbott Elementary.” But this contest could really turn into a (fake) family affair.
The Oscar nominee might just find herself facing off against both of her onscreen daughters: Brunson could reap a nomination for her hosting stint on “Saturday Night Live” and Ayo Edebiri could make the cut for her appearance as Janine’s sister Ayesha on “Abbott.” At the moment, Brunson is expected to score a nom, sitting in second place, while Edebiri is down in 15th. Both women, of course, are in the hunt in the regular comedy acting races — Brunson is in first in lead actress for “Abbott” and Edebiri is in fourth in supporting actress for “The Bear” — so...

The comedy guest Emmy categories have been “Saturday Night Live’s” domain since the sketch series was first allowed to compete there in 2009. It has won 14 awards since then, seven in each category, but last year was one of the rare ones in which “SNL” failed to win either award — and wasn’t even nominated for one of them. Can it rebound this year?
2022 marked just the fourth time “SNL” went home empty-handed in guest after Nathan Lane took Best Comedy Guest Actor for “Only Murders in the Building,” winning his first Primetime Emmy in seven bids, and “Hacks'” Laurie Metcalf nabbed Best Comedy Guest Actress for her first Emmy in 28 years. The first instance occurred in 2013 when the awards went to Bob Newhart (“The Big Bang Theory”) and Melissa Leo (“Louie”) prevailed, with the former winning his long overdue inaugural Emmy. In 2015, Bradley Whitford (“Transparent”) and Joan Cusack (“Shameless”) prevailed,...

The phenomenon of at least three and sometimes even four performers earning Emmy nominations from the same situation comedy series used to be pretty rate. But over the course of the past 13 years, with the increase in the number of category nominees to as many as eight, it’s grown increasingly common. In fact, it’s happened 7 times since 2010 in the supporting actor in a comedy series lineup and three times since 2017 among supporting comedy actresses. And in 2021 and 2022, thanks to “Ted Lasso,” there have been same-series threesomes on both sides.
Looking ahead to this year, the show with the best chance of placing three nominees in a supporting comedy series lineup is “Abbott Elementary” and its 1-2-3 punch of last year’s Emmy champ and current frontrunner Sheryl Lee Ralph, NAACP Image Award victor Janelle James and Lisa Ann Walter. They are right now holding down the 1, 3 and 7 spots,...

The Gold Derby predictions center event for the 2023 Emmy Awards has now added the Comedy Guest Actress category. We have compiled lists of nearly 40 eligible performers in each of the four guest acting races that reflect our educated guesses on who will be submitted for consideration. More names will be added in the next few months and when the Television Academy releases this year’s ballots in June. Make your very first selections now!

Coach Ted might just be in over his head in the third season of the Ted Lasso TV show on Apple TV+. As we all know, Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether a TV show like Ted Lasso is cancelled or renewed for season four (there's been talk that season three is the end). Apple TV+ and other streaming platforms, however, collect their own data. If you've been watching this TV series, we'd love to know how you feel about the third season episodes of Ted Lasso here.
A Apple TV+ sports comedy-drama series, the Ted Lasso TV show stars Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, Juno Temple, Anthony Head, Toheeb Jimoh, Cristo Fernández, Kola Bokinni, Billy Harris, and James Lance. The Emmy race for Best Comedy Supporting Actress was one of the biggest nail-biters of the ceremony last year. The sheer talent in the category was staggering with previous winners Hannah Waddingham, Alex Borstein and Kate McKinnon, as well as previous nominees Hannah Einbinder and Juno Temple, in contention. Adding to the complexity, Sarah Niles (“Ted Lasso”) snagged her first bid for the reigning Best Comedy Series while Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph earned nominations for “Abbott Elementary’s” freshman season.
Ralph ended up winning, overcoming Gold Derby’s odds and a potential vote split with her scene-stealing co-star. That just goes to show how much of a juggernaut “Abbott Elementary” was, and as we cruise into Emmy season this year, that’s important to keep in mind. Worth remembering, too, is that Ralph was in eighth place in our odds to receive a nomination last year, which brings me to Lisa Ann Walter.

I didn’t realize it has been so long, but a year and a half has already gone by since writer/director Macon Blair wrapped production on his remake of the Troma cult classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here). Almost a year has passed since the movie received an R rating for “strong violence and gore, language throughout, sexual references and brief graphic nudity“. But while we continue to wait to hear a release date for this new take on The Toxic Avenger, sound editor Casey Genton, who is currently doing the press rounds for his work on John Wick: Chapter 4, said that fans will be “over the moon” for the remake, and teased a scene the cast and crew have referred to as “the butt guts scene”.

Say what you will about season 2 of "Ted Lasso," but it was nice to have the whole cast and crew together in one place. For the most part, the characters were all a part of AFC Richmond; even if they didn't get along all the time, they still had to be in the same general area together. Ted (Jason Sudeikis) was forced to regularly interact with new team therapist Sharon (Sarah Niles), which led to him slowly but surely overcoming his prejudice against therapists and learning to open up to her. Jamie (Phil Dunster) was forced into the same locker room as the team he'd gotten regulated in the previous season's finale, leading to him learning to let go of his ego and become a real team player.

Frequent collaborators and co-directors Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi’s upcoming documentary, “Personality Crisis: One Night Only,” will premiere April 14 at 8 p.m. on Showtime.
“Personality Crisis: One Night Only” has also released a trailer providing audiences a peek into the lives of Johansen, the one-time New York Dolls lead singer who later performed as Buster Poindexter. Focusing on Johansen, his legacy and his special January 2020 performance, the film documents the punk legend as he “regales the audience with stories and music illuminating the art and cultural evolution of New York City,” according to the film’s logline.
Scorsese explained what drew him to this project: “I’ve known David Johansen for decades, and his music has been a touchstone ever since I listened to the Dolls when I was making ‘Mean Streets’… Then and now, David’s music captures the energy and excitement of New York City.
