"The problem with dialogue is that it tends to slow things down," director George Miller said, in a recent interview with The Telegraph. "Film is a medium often best enjoyed at high speed."
Few films move at a higher speed than Miller's "Mad Max" series, which came tearing back into town after a 30-year break with "Mad Max: Fury Road" and revved its engines again this year for "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." The movies are set in a post-apocalyptic Wasteland that was created by devastating wars over dwindling resources. Somewhere in the middle of all those wars, people decided to take their anger out on books, resulting in mass book burnings that left the remains of human civilization with a paucity of vocabulary. The old words are carefully preserved by the History Men, who tattoo them on their skin. Meanwhile, the denizens of the Wasteland concoct new phrases...

When taking on established animated franchises, you can’t just “listen to nostalgia,” according to Jeff Rowe, director of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.”
“That’s when things get stale,” he said during Variety’s “Innovation and Inspiration in Global Animation” panel at Annecy Animation Festival, moderated by international editor Elsa Keslassy. Rowe was joined by “Transformers One” director Josh Cooley, “The Smurfs Movie” helmer Chris Miller and María Trénor, the director of “Rock Bottom.”
“It’s important to look at things with fresh eyes and ask, ‘Does this make sense? Does a man who was a sensei turning into a rat make sense?'” Rowe continued. “Our goal was to make a film that those who have never heard of ‘Ninja Turtles’ – or hated it and hated that the movie was even happening – were still able to enjoy.”
Therefore, the team hired many people who had “no familiarity with the franchise.

Werewolves seem poised to make a return in a big way in the coming year as Automaton Transfusion director Steven C. Miller gears up to release his film, aptly titled Werewolves, this December.
Miller took to X (formerly Twitter) to sound off on a Bloody Disgusting post about his movie, promising genre fans that this film really "swings for the fences" and goes full throttle, bringing "hard, fast, and ferocious" monster mayhem.
I’ve said it and I’ll say it again.. I love slow burn werewolf films, but this is not that. I wanted to come out hard, fast, and ferocious. I don’t hide them. I don’t give you time to breathe. Two years have gone by since we heard that director Steven C. Miller (Silent Night) was heading into production on a werewolf horror film that, at the time, was going by the title Year 2 – so it seems like the appropriate amount of time has passed, and now we finally have an update to share about that project: Deadline reports that Miller’s movie is now titled Werewolves and Briarcliff Entertainment and The Solution Entertainment Group are teaming up to give it a wide theatrical release in the United States on December 6th!
Starring Frank Grillo of the Purge and Captain America franchises, Werewolves will show us that a supermoon event triggered a latent gene in every human on the planet, turning anyone who entered the moonlight into a werewolf for that one night. Chaos ensued and close to a billion people died. Now, a year later, the Supermoon is back.

Rihanna is proving to be a powerful force for Paramount Animation’s upcoming feature The Smurfs Movie.
Director Chris Miller led the film’s presentation at the Annecy Animation Festival on Tuesday, where he was joined on the stage by Paramount and Nickelodeon Animation president Ramsey Naito. The Smurfs Movie is based on the characters and work of artist Peyo and is set to hit theaters Feb. 14, 2025.
Miller (Puss in Boots) debuted work-in-progress footage from the movie’s opening sequence, along with a demo version of original music. The filmmaker went on to describe how Peyo’s art laid the groundwork for the film’s vision.
“The DNA in Peyo’s original drawings guide so many creative choices in the film,” Miller said. “It’s the blueprint for the kind of film I want to make. All of the action lines and thought bubbles from the comics are going in the movie,...

In 2015, George Miller shocked Hollywood when he reignited the Mad Max franchise with Mad Max: Fury Road. After two decades away from the franchise, many were skeptical how the universe would work in today’s age – but Miller delivered and brought forth one of the finest action movies of all time. In 2024, he further expanded upon his universe by exploring the origin story of Furiosa. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a sprawling epic that charts the childhood of Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) as she is taken from her homeland. Desperate to get back home, as she ages, she...

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the newest game in the popular shooting series, will be ready to play right when Xbox Game Pass launches. The interesting thing about this is that it was unexpected for many people, including Treyarch, the team that created Black Ops 6.
According to a recent talk between Game File and Treyarch production director Yale Miller, the studio learned about the Game Pass addition shortly before it was revealed. The development team had been focused on making the game great for purchase, but now it seems like subscribers will get it for the subscription price.
While Treyarch said they think Game Pass could get new players, they also mentioned the need to make it easier for people who don’t know much about Call of Duty, especially for the Zombies mode. We feel like the answers given only had a hint of truth to them. Call of...

Warner Bros.’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and A24’s Civil War have both gotten off to a slow start at China’s box office. Furiosa, the first movie of George Miller’s Mad Max saga to be released theatrically in China, opened in sixth place with $3.7 million over the country’s Dragon Boat Festival holiday weekend as a batch of local releases dominated ticket sales. Alex Garland’s Civil War, meanwhile, debuted to just $2.4 million for eighth place, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.
Civil War, made for about $50 million, was already an international hit with $69 million in total ticket revenue in North America and $114 million worldwide. But Miller’s Furiosa certainly could have used a bigger boost from China, as its $144 million total at the global box offices still lags behind its hefty $168 million production budget. Zack Snyder's 2006 film "300," based on the comic book by Frank Miller, tells a hyper-stylized and not-the-least-bit-historically-accurate version of the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) wherein 300 Spartan soldiers managed to fend off anywhere from 120,000 to 300,000 soldiers of the Persian Empire for three full days. Both Miller's book and Snyder's film present the Spartans as teeth-gashing, testosterone-spitting, Spam-scented beefcake slabs comprised of nothing but pectoral muscles, testicles, and homophobia. They speak in "Join the Marines" recruiting slogans and disparage anything that's not at least 4000% more masculine than a two-ton bag of Tom Jones' chest hair.
Speaking of chest hair, none of the Spartans have any, happy to parade around their cartoonishly cut physiques as if they all possess a severe shirt allergy. Leading the charge is King Leonidas (Gerard Butler), a man who cannot help but add multiple exclamation marks after every sentence he speaks.

As Dementus put it, hate is “one of the greatest forces of nature.” But he did miss just how closely hope can be tied to it – and George Miller has displayed this in a pretty incredible way, casting a bullied teen in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. If you remember, Quaden Bayles appeared in a heartbreaking viral video back in 2020, expressing how hurt and despondent he was over being teased for his dwarfism. But now you can see him as War Pup (master of the Bommy Knocker) in Furiosa, showing that hope should always win out over hate.
Alongside Quaden Bayles, George Miller also cast Sean Millis, a singer with Hunter’s Syndrome, in Furiosa. Millis, like far too many, was also bullied online for his looks, with rather disgusting comments hurled at him over his appearance. Fortunately, people like Miller continued to stand up for him, with even Furiosa...

Directed by Miller from a screenplay he crafted with Terry Hayes and Brian Hannant, The Road Warrior – which is also known as Mad Max 2 outside of the United States – has the following synopsis: After avenging the death of his wife and young son at the hands of a vicious gang leader, Max drives the post-apocalyptic highways of the Australian outback, fending off attacks from nomadic tribes that prey on outsiders. Falling into an encampment...

Thanks to photorealistic tech advancements, George Miller evolved his approach to VFX on the “Mad Max” franchise in the nine years since “Fury Road.” Which is why he was much more comfortable using CG in post on “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” His thrilling stunt-driven chase sequences were shot in-camera with as many practical effects as possible, but CG enabled him to achieve greater dynamic energy while enhancing his stylized world-building.
Back from “Fury Road” was production VFX supervisor Andrew Jackson of Dneg, who was eager to play with a bigger digital toolbox. This not only encompassed more realistic fire, water, dust, and smoke but also allowed the VFX team to extend the Wasteland desert landscape and skies and embellish the newly created Gas Town and Bullet Town environments. Plus, they were able to replace or augment the iconic vehicles (especially the multitude of motorcycles) for the action set pieces.

Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the filmmaker may have hit a rough patch in the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he finds some high-octane gasoline soon. The revered filmmaker’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga debuted with a disappointing $32 million domestically for the four-day Memorial Day weekend and $36.5 million overseas, diminishing hopes for another Mad Max sequel, Mad Max: The Wasteland, that Miller has been contemplating for years. Boy, were we all wrong. What Miller and his team were able to achieve with ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ is nothing short of breathtaking. noted Danilo Castro, reflecting...

Borrowing a page from his book I want to take a more extended look at his comics career as I don’t feel I done it justice in the first issue. It is an impressive catalogue of work, where he can play claim to having worked on legendary characters such as; Kamandi, Tarzan, Captain America and She Hulk. George Miller, renowned for bringing the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max: Fury Road to life, is back with Furiosa. This prequel explores the origins of Imperator Furiosa, famously portrayed by Charlize Theron. In the new film, Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the role, a decision rooted in Miller’s choice to avoid de-aging technology. Chris Hemsworth plays the warlord in the upcoming Furiosa film. While fans eagerly anticipate Taylor-Joy’s performance, many are excited about a rumored Mad Max cameo. This brief appearance by Max Rockatansky heightens expectations for those hoping to see Tom Hardy reprising his role. Nonetheless, Furiosa stands strong as...

Any chance of a new Friday the 13th movie going into production is on the distant horizon, but there are other things going on with the Friday the 13th franchise now that the copyright lawsuit between the original film’s producer / director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller has ended with Miller gaining the copyright to the first movie in the United States. Miller and his lawyer Marc Toberoff have teamed up with Horror Inc., which is headed up by Robert Barsamian and holds the rights to the overall franchise, to develop a TV series called Crystal Lake for A24 and the Peacock streaming service, and last month it was announced that they’re launching the Jason Universe, which will involve “new Friday the 13th activations spanning a wide range of platforms from entertainment, games, immersive experiences, merchandise and more to be announced throughout 2024.” @JasonUniverse13 accounts were set up...

In Sweet Tooth season 2, Gillian Washington got us familiar with a scientist from the United Kingdom, Dr. James Thacker, who had set sail to the Arctic somewhere in 1911 to find a cure for his muscular degenerative disorder. He had heard about a mysterious village where people were free of all illness and lived beyond 100 years of age. But no one ever heard from him again. It was believed that Thacker and his entire crew lost their way and starved on the ship, Hms Simpson. Some 100 years later, Gillian found her great-grandfather’s diary and brought it back to her laboratory, Fort Smith, to find the cure for her family’s illness. An impatient Gillian injected herself with what I believe was the extract from the purple flower, which was a dormant version of The Blood Of The Earth, but we will come to that later. So, in a way, Gillian...

With legacy sequels being all the rage in Hollywood, it’s within reason to imagine that perhaps a world exists where George Miller asks Mel Gibson to return for a new ‘Mad Max’ film in the future. If “Ghostbusters” can do it, so can ‘Mad Max.’ Well, there’s one problem, though–George Miller hasn’t thought about what an elderly Max would be like.

Science fiction cinema came of age in the 1950s, beginning an ascent out of the drive-in schlock market that culminated in the boldly experimental yet still commercially viable efforts of the 1960s. That fed directly into the next decade, with sci-fi in the 1970s taking on (for the most part) the same subversive attitude as most other movies made during that era.
But sci-fi movies also entered blockbuster territory in the ‘70s as demonstrated by the massive success of films like Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman: The Movie, Logan’s Run, and Alien. The studios realized that sci-fi could be a cash cow, and as the 1980s dawned, decided to ramp up their genre output, not to mention their budgets, with elaborate visual effects, bigger stars, and more action—even if some of the more cerebral concepts espoused in the earlier decades’ films took a bit of a back seat.

George Miller’s epic Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is now playing in theatres. It’s the latest entry into the definitive post-apocalyptic saga of our time and a series that minted Mel Gibson as a global superstar, transformed Charlize Theron into an action heroine, and seems poised to do the same for Anya Taylor-Joy. In my opinion, there’s never been a bad Mad Max film, as they’re all quite different in tone and technique, although we all have our favorite. So, here’s our JoBlo list of Mad Max movies ranked from worst to best!

The funny thing is, Sienna Miller can’t stand boho chic. “Don’t you think it sounds annoying?” asks the eternal poster girl for hippy-luxe, festival-adjacent summer dressing. Actually, from where I’m sitting right now, boho chic looks pretty damn good. Barefoot in jeans and a tissue-fine T-shirt, ropes of Botticelli-blond hair tumbling over her shoulders, Miller looks absurdly radiant even on Microsoft Teams, after “a rough baby night” with her second daughter. “That’s very nice of you,” she says sunnily, “but you know, there just is a bohemian way of dressing, isn’t there? It’s not like I invented anything.” She shrugs. “When I was younger the 70s and 60s really resonated for me.

George Miller‘s Mad Max franchise has left an indelible mark on Hollywood, transforming from a low-budget B-movie into a beloved and enduring series. The original Mad Max (1979) gained a cult following for its gritty, high-octane action and post-apocalyptic vision. The trilogy that followed, featuring Mel Gibson as the titular character, cemented the franchise’s status as a cult classic. But it was Miller’s 2015 reboot, Mad Max: Fury Road, that truly showcased his mastery of the franchise. After nearly three decades away from the series, Miller brought new energy and vision to the table, casting Tom Hardy as a new...

Update: (Monday Pm) As noted yesterday, the margin between the 2nd and 3rd place finish for If and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was slim, and in the end, after final figures were reported, their positions at the weekend box office flip-flopped. According to the latest numbers via Deadline, Furiosa made $10.785 million to If‘s $10.5. While that’s only a $285k difference, it gives Furiosa a bit of a better finish, allowing it to reclaim second place, although it trails far behind The Garfield Movie‘s first-place finish with $14 million.

The film is a treat for every viewer who craves action and an immersive storyline at the same time. Norman Lear was not a man to shy away from controversy. If anything, he sprinted toward it, knowing that doing so would help open people’s minds to pervasive American issues related to discrimination, human rights, and more. Through his landmark sitcoms like “All in the Family,” “Maude,” “Sanford and Son,” “One Day at a Time” (twice!), and “Good Times” (also twice!), Lear helped American families address thorny political and social topics by bringing those circumstances into their living rooms every week.
But one episode has long stood out as his most controversial: “Maude’s Dilemma,” a two-part episode airing in the first season, wherein the lead character (played by Bea Arthur) decides to get an abortion. At the time, abortions were legal in the state of New York (where Maude and her family lived), but the Roe v. Wade verdict was still two months away. CBS was wary about...

While certain terms over the use of artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry have been settled, there is still a serious concern over it – and rightly so. It seems like every couple of weeks there is a fresh issue related to AI in Hollywood. The main issue generally revolves around job replacement but there is also the genuine concern over creativity itself being shut down. One movie that has been of particular focus is the forthcoming Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third movie in the Spider-Verse series. But according to Chris Miller, there’s no need to get your spiderweb in a twist, as there will be no AI whatsoever.
Chris Miller took to X to address a fan concern that there could be use of artificial intelligence in future Spider-Verse movies. In his response, he wrote, “There is no generative AI in Beyond the Spider-Verse and there never will be.

The Mad Max franchise is unarguably one of the most popular action franchises of all time, created by mastermind George Miller. While the star power connected to it — which includes notable names like Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, and Mel Gibson — is one factor behind its epic success, its breathtaking action sequences and stunt scenes further set the saga apart from every other.
