Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In honor of “The Florida Project,” which has just started its platform release across the country, what is the greatest child performance in a film?
Jordan Hoffman (@JHoffman), The Guardian, Vanity Fair
I can agonize over this question or I can go at this Malcolm Gladwell “Blink”-style. My answer is Tatum O’Neal in “Paper Moon.” She’s just so funny and tough, which of course makes the performance all the more heartbreaking. She won the freaking Oscar at age 10 for this and I’d really love to give a more deep cut response, but why screw around? Paper Moon is a perfect film and she is the lynchpin.

Although Larry David had impersonated Senator Bernie Sanders brilliantly multiple times on “Saturday Night Live,” the men’s resemblance was written off as nothing but a joke. After all, they’re both older Jewish men from New York. Of course they’re similar.
On Tuesday night’s premiere of PBS’ “Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.” though, they discovered they have far more in common than just looks. After running a DNA test on the two, host Gates revealed that they share significantly long sequences of identical DNA. In short, they’re related.

“What the hell?!” David said upon learning the news. “That is really funny. That is amazing! Alright. Cousin Bernie.”
In a separate interview, Sanders had a similarly delighted but stunned reaction. “You’re kidding. That is unbelievable.

A Massachusetts man has been arrested in connection with the kidnapping, rape and killing of 24-year-old Lisa Ziegert, more than two decades after her death.

Schara has been charged with murder, aggravated rape and kidnapping. His arrest is the first in the 25-year-old case. While authorities suspect a motive, authorities have not publicly disclosed it.

Bill Hader interrupted Saturday Night Live's prime-time Weekend Update "Summer Edition" for a fake FaceTime session as short-lived White House communications director Anthony "the Mooch," Scaramucci.
The comedian, wearing a sharp blue suit and tie, crashed Michael Che's report about a raccoon, noting, "I heard you two nutless liberal asswipes mention my name earlier, and when I hear my name three times, I appear like a Goomba Beetlejuice."
"The Mooch" told Che and co-host Colin Jost that he wasn't surprised his White House tenure ended after 11 days. "Hell no.

From the sensitive Tobey Maguire to the nerdy Andrew Garfield to the clumsy Tom Holland, Peter Parker/Spider-Man has evolved into the ultimate teenage, superhero misfit. And, as Sony’s top franchise, the web-slinger has experienced different rites of passage under the direction of Sam Raimi (“Spider-Man,” “Spider-Man 2,” “Spider-Man 3”), Marc Webb (“The Amazing Spider-Man,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”), and Jon Watts (“Spider-Man Homecoming”).
But until Sony made a deal in 2015 to share the Spider-Man movie rights with Disney and Marvel Studios, the Marvel Comics superhero remained separate from the McU. That changed with the decidedly younger Holland making a guest appearance as Parker/Spidey in “Captain America: Civil War” (2016). Following his first solo stint in “Homecoming” (July 7th), Holland will appear in “Avengers: Infinity War” (May 4, 2018), followed by the sequel, “Homecoming 2” (2019).

This weekend will mark Bobby Moynihan’s last episode of “Saturday Night Live” as a cast member. Moynihan’s been an “SNL” staple for nine seasons, the perfect Weekend Update secret weapon and a valuable part of the show’s ensemble.
But while some remembrances will focus on his Drunk Uncle character or second-hand news correspondent Anthony Crispino, there’s one particular sketch that deserves some recognition on Moynihan’s farewell tour.
“Best Buy Firing” first aired in 2013, nestled in amongst the Thanksgiving episode from Season 39 of “SNL.” It was the third appearance of Dana (Cecily Strong) and Niff (Moynihan), the pair of employees who roast their outgoing co-workers when they sense that they’re about to be fired. First from McDonald’s and then from Barnes and Noble, the formula reached its apex with the final installment as the pair burned everyone else on the Best Buy employee list.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the latest episode in the company's cosmic-mercenaries saga, predictably crushed the competition, grossing an estimated $425 million globally and perpetuating the studio's multiplex dominance. The force was not with Jyn Erso this weekend.
Saturday Night Live kicked off 2017 with first time host Felicity Jones, who was the weakest part of an otherwise solid episode. After a very funny pep talk from Tina Fey about not letting her nerves get the best of her, the Rogue One actress spent much of the evening struggling to maintain an American accent in sketches involving Bachelor knockoffs and famous figures in the women’s suffrage movement.

Susan B. Anthony is a pivotal figure in the women’s rights movement, but during a sketch on “Saturday Night Live,” home girl was just flat out annoying. Host Felicity Jones, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant, Melissa Villasenor and Vanessa Bayer were taking a historic tour of the suffragette’s house when they decided to try and summon Anthony using an urban legend they’d heard of. You can check out the full sketch above. “I heard a secret that if a group of women holds hands in her living room and says her name three times, she’ll appear,” says one of the women.

The mystery of the anti-Hillary Clinton, pro-Donald Trump vandals who continued to deface a beautiful children’s mural took a while to solve.
Power Stretch Studios in Montclair, New Jersey, had suffered a fire in September, and its windows and door was boarded up. Two days after the Nov. 8 presidential election, someone wrote on the boards: “Lock her up,” a popular refrain against Clinton amongst Trump supporters during his campaign. A studio employee painted over it, but the vandals returned, writing ”America Has Spoken” with Trump’s face drawn next to it.

Saturday Night Live provided some comic relief about the upcoming presidential election, with help from a calssic fan-favorite character, Enid Strict — better known as The Church Lady.
SNL alum Dana Carvey returned to the show as his beloved alter ego and talked to Colin Jost for a segment on “Weekend Update.”
“Instead of resting up for church, you’re staying up late making jokes about Anthony’s weiner,” the Church Lady said to Jost. “Not quite the path of Jesus, is it?”
Church Lady went on to consider the election, and the choice between electing Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump.

When the Chicago Cubs won the World Series on Wednesday night, emotional Cubs superfan Bill Murray lost his mind in the stands and could barely keep it together. It was no coincidence, then, that the Saturday Night Live alum invited three of the team's players - Dexter Fowler, David Ross, and Anthony Rizzo - onto the most recent episode of the sketch show. After Dexter, David, and Anthony stripped down to their underwear in the hilarious "Surprise Bachelorette" sketch with host Benedict Cumberbatch, they joined the legendary actor on Weekend Update for a rousing rendition of the Chicago fight song, "Go Cubs Go!" Even if you aren't a Cubs fan, it's worth watching just to see the pure, unadulterated joy on Bill's face.

With the arrival of Fall and Winter comes a return to more serious subject matter at movie theatres, and another look at events occurring during World War II. However, this new release really addresses the legacy of those events, a look back at history and those who document it. And the film is, in many ways, a courtroom thriller set in the British legal system, where the powdered wigs aren’t the only thing different from the Us legal proceedings. However, the person on trial there is from the states, a professor suddenly burdened with presenting proof of one of the past century’s greatest tragedies, all at the beginning of this relatively new century. Yes, this Ww II-themed docudrama take place less than twenty years ago, 50 years after the end of the war, when this woman accused must defend her belief that her accuser is in Denial.

Fall is the season for Oscar movies; cheap summer thrillers are long forgotten. However, it’s a good time to honor the sleeper success that is “The Shallows.” Today is the film’s DVD release, the final platform for a little $17 million movie that stars Blake Lively, a shark, and a coral reef, and grossed $116 million worldwide.
There’s a sophisticated intelligence behind this movie, manipulating suspense with unexpected twists. This does not happen very often. So what did the producers and the studio do right?
1. Target women.
In fall 2014, veteran production executive Lynn Harris (“Man of Steel,” “Gravity”) founded indie production company Weimaraner Republic Pictures with her fellow dog-loving husband, Matti Leshem. Their goal: produce high-concept movies on modest budgets, aimed at the under-served women’s audience. Leshem brought Anthony Jawinski’s script for “The Shallows” to Harris.

At the 2015 Emmy Awards, Anthony Anderson had a supercute night out with his teenage son, Nathan. This year, however, he gave his gorgeous daughter, Kyra, and his adorable mom, Doris, the chance to own the red carpet. The trio arrived at the Emmys ready to have fun, flashing big smiles and wrapping their arms around each other for photographers. Kyra, 20, looked absolutely gorgeous in a lacy, floral gown, while Doris wore an elegant black dress with a printed hat and coat. Anthony, who shares Kyra and Nathan with estranged wife Alvina Stewart, later had some picture-perfect moments with his Black-ish costars before partying the night away with Doris and Kyra at HBO's star-studded afterparty. Of all the cute interactions at the Emmys, we feel like the Anderson family takes the cake.
