Stephen Falk’s Fxx underrated comedy “You’re the Worst,” which ran from 2014 to 2019, is a rom-com at heart … and it’s also raunchy, mean, deeply strange, and even off-putting at times. It’s a show where the central couple, Gretchen Cutler and Jimmy Shive-Overly — Aya Cash and Chris Geere in roles they were seemingly born to play — first meet at a wedding where Jimmy just got kicked out and Gretchen is stealing a gift. Both of their characters are established in their very first interaction. Gretchen asks Jimmy for a cigarette, and he’s irritated because they’re “expensive.” The incredulous yet brazen way Cash looks at Geere in response is the blueprint for Gretchen and Jimmy’s dynamic going forward.

When the Writers Guild of America went on strike May 2, the early days of the work stoppage saw scribes channel their creativity into picket signs that reflected their rage over such issues as AI and fair pay as their union went head to head with the studios and streamers that comprise the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
As the strike hits day 100 on Aug. 9, however, many writers have turned to new creative outlets that don’t violate the WGA’s rules of working on AMPTP-backed films and TV shows. While some struggle to write without external deadlines or after the picket line grind, others say they are content to remain busy making up for lost time with family.
The last strike, in 2007, lasted 99 days. This time, the studios and streamers were 90-odd days into the walkout before both sides agreed to even talk about talking again. So with no clear end in sight,...

Have we just given up on hovercars? I feel like we’ve been promised hovercars for as long as I can remember, but where are they? I’m looking outside right now. I see cars. No hover. Just wheels. It helps if you read that in a Jerry Seinfeld voice. Although hovercars may never become part of our lives, we’ll have to turn to entertainment to scratch that itch. Apple TV+ has released the first trailer for Hello Tomorrow!, an upcoming dramedy set in a retro-future world filled with fantastic mid-century hovercars.

“The Queen’s Gambit” director and writer Scott Frank was called out Sunday on Twitter for insisting on pushing through his acceptance speech at the Emmys on Sunday for about two minutes despite the insistence from the orchestra’s cue that he wrap it up.
Frank won for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his work on the Anya Taylor-Joy-led Netflix series, and gave a speech that thanked Taylor-Joy, among many others, involved in the show and his personal life, as he was given several notices from the producers via the classic play-off music to wrap it up. At one point he responded, “Really?” to the tune and pressed on.

Henry Cavill will star in the upcoming rom-com, “The Rosie Project.”
The film, which has been in the making for a few years at Sony Pictures, is based on Graeme Simsion’s novel of the same name and will follow the former “Man of Steel” actor as Don Tillman, a genetics professor on his journey to find love. Tillman has never been on a second date, but is determined to find his wife with “The Wife Project,” an evidence-based way to ultimately find Tillman’s perfect match. However, he meets Rosie, a free-spirited, slightly “wild” bartender that’s exactly the opposite of what Tillman is looking for. But of course, the pair fall in love.
Stephen Falk will direct, while Matt Tolmach and Michael Costigan will produce.

You had me at Aya Cash as a successful horror writer. Aya Cash starred for multiple seasons in Stephen Falk's intoxicating and infuriating anti-romantic comic series You're the Worst and has more recently shown up in the action series The Boys; I was addicted to the former and have yet to catch up to the latter. Yet her presence alone makes me want to watch Scare Me, which is heading for release on the Shudder streaming service on October 1, 2020. I acknowledge that our own Mel Valentin saw the film out of the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was not terribly impressed. Two days after WeWork hired its new CEO, the limited series following the company’s dramatic rise and rapid decline has found a showrunner — creator Stephen Falk.
Hailing from Chernin Entertainment and Endeavor Content, the untitled WeWork project will star Nicholas Braun (A.K.A. Cousin Greg from HBO’s “Succession”) as WeWork cofounder Adam Neumann, which will be based on the upcoming book from Wall Street Journal reporters Eliot Brown and Maureen Farrell, who have been reporting on the company for several years.
The series has not yet landed at a network.
Falk is best known as the creator of FX’s “You’re the Worst,” as well as writing for “Orange Is the New Black” and “Weeds.” He will executive producer alongside Braun, with Chernin Entertainment and Endeavor Content serving as the studio via their partnership.
