On the morning of January 23, 2024, actor Gary Graham, star of the "Alien Nation" TV series, the cult classic "Robot Jox," and multiple-time "Star Trek" supporting player, passed away at the age of 74. Graham had a prolific acting career, appearing in single episodes of many of the hottest TV shows of his day, including "Starsky & Hutch," "The Incredible Hulk," Knots Landing," "CHiPs," "T.J. Hooker," "Hunter," "M.A.N.T.I.S.," "Diagnosis Murder," "Ally McBeal," "Jag," and "Nip/Tuck." He had an easy demeanor, allowing him to play comedic affable characters just as well as intense, serious ones.
Trekkies likely know Graham best for playing Soval on "Star Trek: Enterprise." Soval was the snippy Vulcan ambassador who oversaw Earth's very, very slow transition from post-war ruin to a thriving society ready for space exploration. In the timeline of "Star Trek," humanity discovers warp-speed flight while the world is recovering from nuclear devastation. On the very first Earth warp flight,...

This Star Trek: Lower Decks article contains spoilers.
Remember when we first met the Ferengi, way back in “The Last Outpost,” episode five of Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s first season? Gene Roddenberry and co. wanted so badly to make the Ferengi menacing, with their laser whips and hunched appearance. But despite Roddenberry’s plans, the Ferengi proved to be a terrible replacement for the Klingons as the Federation’s new big bads, and quickly found themselves reduced to occasional appearances throughout the rest of the series.
But instead of letting the Ferengi go to waste, Michael Piller and the producers of Deep Space Nine followed Rule of Acquisition #292: “Only a fool passes up a business opportunity.” They added Quark to the main cast, bringing back “The Last Outpost” actor Armin Shimerman to play him, and added his brother Rom (Max Grodénchik) and nephew Nog (Aron Eisenberg).

First Orion, now Feringinar. Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Episode 6 takes us to another alien homeworld never closely examined in the franchise's live-action offerings.
Meanwhile, Mariner hasn't quite shaken the self-destructive compulsion, and Boimler discovers his Achilles' Heel.
Also, it finally explores the question of whether Rutherford and Tendi could ever be more than friends.
But before the LTJGs' antics distract us, let's point out the tidbit of intel revealed in the teaser. The Ferengi lower decks crew member on the ship that encounters the mystery vessel has foreknowledge they were going to be taken.
Also, he doesn't seem afraid, which is a strong indication that the abduction/collection theory has some credence. How this is a profitable endeavor is yet to be revealed.

This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
Talk about rags to riches. Once considered a blight on "Star Trek" with their introduction in "The Next Generation," the Ferengi have come a long way since an inauspicious appearance that even veteran "Trek" actor Armin Shimerman once called a "disaster." Originally conceived as an alien species that would pose a Klingon-like threat, the distinctive and prominently earlobed characters received a much-needed overhaul throughout "Deep Space Nine," where they were reimagined as a more comedic, profit-hungry, and staunchly capitalist society that functioned as a dark reflection of everything that the "socialist utopia" of Starfleet stands for. That's what makes it all the more meaningful that "Lower Decks" has now dedicated an entire episode to the fan-favorite Ferengi and, more importantly, the post-"Deep Space Nine" whereabouts of their newest leader, Rom.

In "Those Old Scientists," the latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," a magical time portal is discovered in the late 24th century by the characters from "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Ensigns Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawney Newsome) accidentally activate the portal and are thrown back in time 120 years to where Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew discover them. For the sake of retaining timeline purity, everyone agrees that Boimler and Mariner need to be sent back to the future. The issue is that no one knows how to activate the portal in the 23rd century, as it requires a rare element that is near-impossible to manufacture, and it is emblazoned with symbols that even the talented Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) cannot translate.
Mariner seeks to help Uhura by offering a break and a drink to cool off her brain. They retire to the mess hall where...

Many did not know actress Annie Wersching’s cancer diagnosis, and woke up today shocked to learn she had died at age 45.

Characters on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" frequently like to speak in code or drop hints rather than get directly to the point, so let's be clear here. When it comes to "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," worst is a highly relative term. In many, many ways, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" is the best "Star Trek." While it could never break the same ground as the original (and had a few clunker episodes due to its longevity and exhausted writers), "Deep Space Nine" tells the best story, has the best overall cast of characters, and its best episodes are more plentiful than those of most of its franchise brethren. Regularly dealing with moral compromises, no-win scenarios, and cultural differences that cannot always be bridged, it's the kind of show that might have dismayed original "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, who wanted the future of humanity to look perennially optimistic.

Without the acerbic wit of the Ninth Doctor in 2005, the 21st-century geek landscape would look a whole lot different. If we were to borrow the Tardis from Doctor Who, and pop back to the debut of “Rose” on March 26, 2005, we’d know we were standing on the edge of a moment when everything changed. Before Doctor Who, Christopher Eccleston had been known for hard-edged, gritty roles like the game-changing horror flick 28 Days Later or Danny Boyle’s Shallow Grave. After Doctor Who, Eccleston was known for…well…even more hard-edged roles; from the baddie Malekith in Thor: The Dark World or priest Matt Jamison in The Leftovers.
But, for Doctor Who fans, he’ll always be the edgy Ninth Doctor: impatient, dismissive, but ultimately heroic. Without Eccleston, it’s difficult to imagine the Who renaissance. There’s no Tennant and Smith without him, to say nothing of Capaldi and Whittaker.

"I raised him! And it's my job to protect him!" A trailer has debuted for an indie drama called Skipping Stones, arriving in theaters later in 2020. This indie drama originally used the title Skipping Stones to Madonna, but they took out that second name and went with the shorter version for release. The film tells the story of a girl coming to terms with the loss of her brother and her deep friendship with her brother's best friend. This stars Michael Ironside, Patricia Charbonneau, Chase Masterson, Daniel Hugh Kelly, Gabby Kalomiris, & Nathaniel Ansbach. It's described as inspired by other small town dramas like Ordinary People, Moonlight Mile, Stand By Me. But it doesn't seem like it's worth writing home about. Here's the first official trailer for S.J. Creazzo's Skipping Stones, direct from the film's own YouTube: Skipping Stones to Madonna tells the story of a young girl (Amanda...

Though Stan Lee and Star Trek aren’t two things you’d usually associate with one another, the comic book legend does have a connection to the sci-fi franchise. It may not be a substantial one, but Marvel Comics actually published a number of Trek series, mini-series and standalones in the early 1980s and late 90s. And though Stan the Man is obviously more known for his contributions to pop culture involving costumed crusaders – think Spider-Man, Black Panther, the X-Men, etc. – he’s still got his ties to the franchise that Gene Roddenberry spawned all those years ago.
As such, countless Star Trek actors, from across the various TV shows and movies that’ve been released over the decades, have come forth to pay their respects to the man following his tragic death earlier this week. Including but not limited to, we have tributes from Patrick Stewart, Karl Urban, LeVar Burton,...

Dozens Of ‘Star Trek’ Actors Converge For Snoop Dogg’s Parody Pic ‘Unbelievable’ – Watch The Trailer
It’s a Trekkie delight. No idea why so many Star Trek actors thought this was a great idea, but they did. Snoop Dogg seems to be the furthest thing away from sci-fi as you can get, but he’s one of the stars Unbelievable, a parody film that uses a puppet for James T. Kirk. Watch the trailer for below.
The original score was written/composed by Emmy-winning, Oscar-nominated Gerald Fried — the last living composer from the original Star Trek series.
Snoop Dogg executive produced the film from writer-director Steven Fawcette that also stars Nichelle Nichols (who also co-produced), Angelique Fawcette (also a producer), Michael Madsen and Robert Davi. Also in the film are Casper Smart, Sam Asghari, Gilbert Gottfried and newcomer Katarina Van Derham.

Whether its through personal appearances, posing for photos, coordinating or participating in charitable events or interacting on social media, Chase lives and breathes the fandom life. That simple fact comes through in the following interview in which she not only talks about The Flash and Star Trek (DS9 remains the franchise's most underrated entry), but her role in Vienna, the Doctor Who spin-off audio adventures from Big Finish in which she plays the typical mercenary assassin with a heart of a gold. Voices From Krypton: Obviously you've done Deep Space Nine and Doctor Who and Vienna audio dramas, and, now, The Flash. For you, what's the draw to this genre? Chase Masterson: These stories are the most fun. And they're the most real. Both. What's not to love? Combine epic adventure and transcendent themes, and you get to the heart of what makes us tick. We can all do powerful things,...

Starring Carol Cleveland (Monty Python), Sophie Aldred (Doctor Who), Tom Price (Torchwood) and Chase Masterson (Star Trek: Deep Space 9), The Search for Simon follows 39 year David’s search for his younger brother Simon, who, at the age of 7 (ish) in 1979, disappeared, due to a perceived alien abduction. After all, his Dad did tell him that he had been…
Completely devastated by the loss of his younger brother, and best friend, David vowed to find his brother – or at the very least find out about the Aliens that took him. This quest has taken over and completely filled David’s life. It’s more than a passion, it’s an obsession. David has been meeting people – filming interviews and generally obsessing over alien abductions ever since.

I've got an awesome retro sci-fi short film for you to check out. It's called R.U.R.: Genesis, and it combines past, present, and future in the style of an alternate 1969 history. This is kind of a cheesy film, but it's all part of the playful vibe. I had a lot of fun watching this, I especially loved the visual style and setting. The short was written and directed by James Kerwin, and it stars Chase Masterson who played Leeta in Deep Space Nine. Here's a little information on the story and how it came about thanks to TrekMovie:
R.U.R.: Genesis is an indie sci-fi thriller based on some very early sci-fi stories and themes. In 1919, Czech playwright Karel Capek began work on what would become a seminal science fiction story, R.U.R.. The film was set 50 years into the future (well, 50 years into the future from the perspective of...

Once upon a time there was a TV show called Community. No, wait, first upon a time there was a TV show called Doctor Who. Then the show Community paid tribute to Doctor Who with a parody version called Inspector Spacetime. Fans liked it so much that they helped in the creation of a web series of Inspector Spacetime. Except NBC and Sony weren’t okay with that, so the series was renamed Untitled Web Series About a Space Traveler Who Can Also Travel Through Time. Lasting six short episodes and starring original Inspector Spacetime portrayer Travis Richey, the web series was very popular and also quite acclaimed. So, logically a second season was planned, and it was going to be even bigger. A prequel episode was released last September with newly added cast members Mayim Bialik (Blossom; The Big Bang Theory), as the voice of the Inspector’s telephone-booth time machine, and...

What began as a joke obsession on "Community" first turned into an "Inspector SpaceTime" web series. Now, The Inspector is going big with a feature film, guest-starring Sylvester McCoy of "Doctor Who," "Star Trek" actors and Mayim Bialik.
Yes, this is a real thing.
Instead of a second season to "Untitled Web Series About a Space Traveler Who Can Also Travel Through Time," the producers have decided to go with a film, "Untitled Motion Picture About a Space Traveler Who Can Also Travel Through Time." This choice came after McCoy (aka, the Seventh Doctor), Bialik ("The Big Bang Theory"), Robert Picardo ("Star Trek: Voyager") and Chase Masterson ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine") all agreed to be guest stars.
The series/film also stars Travis Richey (The Inspector), Eric Loya and Carrie Keranen.
To prove how serious all of this is, the movie's press release even included a quote from McCoy:...

Without realizing it, I grew up exposed to the earliest anime, shows like Astro Boy and The Amazing Three and Kimba the White Lion. It was a quiet invasion overshadowed by louder, more colorful and kinetic American animation on Saturday mornings and classic Warner cartoons on weekday afternoons. As a result, I missed the next great era of American anime such as Space Battleship Yamato and Robotech. It certainly developed a large following in the 1970s and 1980s with the airwaves packed with these shows. In fact there were so many that several shorter-run series were packed together as Force Five. The Wednesday show was known as Spaceketeers and ran for 26 episodes, edited down from 73 episodes and never quite concluded the story.
Now, Shout! Factory has taken the series, which was edited into three different films by Toei in 2009 and is releasing them on disc. The new version was written and directed by William Winckler,...

With the announcement that Star Trek: Voyager’s Robert Picardo was joining then cast of Untitled Web Series second season, Travis Richey has announced that yet another veteran of Star Trek, this time Chase Masterson of Deep Space Nine, will be added to the cast. It might be easy to look at Chase Masterson and ask what someone as beautiful and talented as she is knows about bullying. But the fact is, bullying affects people from all walks of life, no matter what they look like, what they are able to do, or even how popular they are. People can be targeted for many different reasons, which creates unnecessary pain and anguish -- and sadly, sometimes, suicide. Masterson, who played Leeta in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," and has enjoyed success on the independent film circuit since, has brought together a number of international organizations and companies in an effort to wipe bullying off the planet. And she's bringing that work to this year's San Diego Comic-Con. "The anti-bullying issue is coming of age," Masterson said in a release. "Everyone ...

So parts two and three of the Drashani Empire trilogy are out. I figured that, what the heck, I’d review both in the same article. So here you go. Enjoy!
The Acheron Pulse is act two of the trilogy. The first part, “The Burning Prince”, featured the Fifth Doctor. The last part features the Seventh. This is the middle act, with the Sixth. Middle acts are notoriously hard to pull-off well. Does Big Finish do it here?
The story has the Doctor (Colin Baker) arriving some thirty years after the events in “The Burning Prince”. Following the so-called “Succession of Blood”, there’s a new woman on the throne, now, and the empire has moved forward. Currently they’re fighting a war against a species known as the Wrath, led by their evil overlord Tenebris, who use the titular weapon to do…oh, all sorts of bad things.

Being of a certain age I've been to a few conventions over the years, had the pleasure of rubbing shoulders with various sci-fi and cult TV luminaries, seen things you people wouldn't believe (buy me a beer and I'll tell you a tale or two!), but somehow in all this time and despite being a fan I've never been to a dedicated Star Trek convention, so this past weekend at Destination Star Trek London has been memorable in a great many ways.
Considering the high profile that Trek has consistently enjoyed in the media, pop culture and among fans pretty much since its inception in 1966, and especially since the J.J. Abrams reboot a couple of years ago, it's somewhat surprising that Destination London was the first convention to be held in the UK for over a decade. Destination Star Trek London was billed as the biggest Star Trek event in London in the past 10 years. It certainly was big and probably only beaten in size by the annual convention held in Las Vegas. Having been a Star Trek fan for 30 years, this was my first convention, as it was for a lot of the people in attendance because a major get-together like this is rare in the UK.
On offer (for a fee) were autographs and photos with actors from the entire Star Trek franchise, stalls selling merchandise, talks, props on display, and a stunt show. If you were a Star Trek fan, it was the place you wanted to be and 17000 of them made their way to the Excel Center.

Nearly five decades after the Starship Enterprise first set out on its mission to boldy go where no man had gone before, its legacy couldn't be stronger than it is right now. With the buzz about next year's Star Trek Into Darkness (as it will now be called) reaching fever pitch (not least about the identity of man of the moment Benedict Cumberbatch's as yet unrevealed villain), and the recent stunning Blu-Ray release of The Next Generation's first season (which Shadowlocked awarded five stars in its review here), fans in the UK are being well and truly spoiled by the upcoming Destination Star Trek event to be held at London's ExCeL centre on 19th to 21st October 2012.

It's been 13 years since "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" ended its seven-year syndicated run. But like anything else with the name "Star Trek" attached, it's still hard to get away from. That's exactly what actress Chase Masterson has had to deal with over that period -- and she only appeared in 17 episodes of the show as Leeta, a Dabo girl in Quark's bar who later married Quark's brother, Rom. It's not that Masterson is trying to distance herself from fandom -- far from it. But her profession is still as an actor, and there's more to her talents than simply looking beautiful and being charming. "Leeta is one of those wonderful roles that turned out to be more than the sum of its parts, and I'm grateful that Leeta has had that enthusiastic following," Masterson recently told Airlock ...

One of the most important lessons I learned in life was the importance of humor. It helps one keep their sanity when the troubles of life pile on you. As a wise man once told me, .Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you cry alone.. However, humor is a very tricky art. One has to be very careful not to take something too far. Earlier today, I saw a message on Chase Masterson's Twitter account, which was a retweet that she had received from Jose Molina, which said, .Y'all know I'm not prudish, but I don't think Ray would approve. A little dignity, folks . the man's a living legend.. That quickly got my attention and started me searching for what they were discussing. What they were discussing was a video on YouTube called "[Expletive] Me Ray Bradbury.. It features a young ...

Chase Masterson is a lot of things, but she isn't just the Dabo girl from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." The actress, who played a mysterious lounge singer in "Yesterday Was a Lie," has been keeping a lock as a favorite among Star Trek fans, and is now the new face of The Federation, the Star Trek fan club originally known as the International Federation of Trekkers. The group, the only one officially sanctioned by late "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, has been run by Russ Haslage since the mid-1980s. Although the club has had a part in other Star Trek projects -- like trying to get George Takei a series based on the USS Excelsior -- Haslage has spent recent months expanding its presence online with the acquisition earlier this year of TrekUnited, and the rebranding of the club ...

At a loss on what to review this week for the neo-noir retrospective, I solicited suggestions from Pajiba readers via my Facebook page. My colleague, Brian Prisco, suggested writer-director James Kerwin's Yesterday Was a Lie (2008). At the time, having not read his post on Netflix Watch Instantly until after finishing the film, I took the recommendation seriously. I looked up the film, saw it was classified as a hybrid of neo-noir and sci-fi with some positive reviews, and started getting my hopes up. You see, a decade ago, an indie neo-noir entitled Memento (2000) forced me on a path towards filmmaking and criticism, so I have a bit of a weak spot for them. Hoping that lightning would strike twice, I roped in a noir-loving friend (and fellow colleague in the Cinema and Media Studies Ph.D. program) to watch the film with me. After about twenty minutes, my potentially...

The Federation forms June 15 with a new Web presence and what organizers say is a new home for the International Federation of Trekkers, a fan club started in 1984 with the help of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry. "He wanted our organization to be one where fans from all over the world, fans with different interests and different talents, would come together to do wondrous things," said club founder Russ Haslage about Roddenberry. "'Do as the crew of the Enterprise does in every episode ... go places and help people,' were our orders from Gene." The rebranding comes after months of planning, and will include actors from Star Trek's past to help bring fans to TrekFederation.com. That includes Chase Masterson, who played Leeta in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," as the "face" of The ...

Writer/director James Kerwin creates a cinematic masterpiece with Yesterday was a Lie. The film follows Hoyle (played by Kipleigh Brown), a detective searching for a notebook that hasn’t been seen since World War II. The only clues she has are a lounge singer (Chase Masterson, who also produced this film) who speaks in riddles and a professor, John Dudas (John Newton), currently in hiding. As Hoyle pursues every lead, she uncovers philosophical truths, alternative realities and secrets that will change her life, and possibly the world, forever.
The making of this film can be described in one word: intentionality. Every decision is made to impact the audience’s experience, which is exactly how it should be. While I was originally put off by the fact that the film is in black and white, it actually adds to the noir aspects and reaffirms the point that Hoyle expects everything to be clear cut,...

Hey, folks! It's the time of year again for another BayCon in the Bay Area. This year's theme is one of my favorites: Steampunk! BayCon "The Lost Sky City of Pyrocumulon" looks to be a good weekend! Guests this year are author Mercedes Lackey and her husband Larry Dixon, artist Tim Kirk, classic Star Trek sweetheart Chase Masterson, and a special concert by Tempest; the Steampunk rockband.
As an unneeded extra incentive, BayCon is located right next to Great America, in Santa Clara, who will be hosting their Memorial Day Weekend Gay Day on Friday Night! They have also agreed to present a special fireworks show for BayCon guests on Sunday night! Also, karaoke in the hotel lobby! Now you can get up on stage and sing your heart out in front of hundreds of fellow Sci-Fi junkies who will enjoy and judge you with their stares. o.o
