“Where were you in ’76?” The newest entrant in Criterion’s 4K disc club is Richard Linklater’s rowdy but affectionate ode to high school nostalgia, Texas-style. It’s a Bicentennial summer update of American Graffiti and in just 14 years the entire face of America has changed. Youth idealism is dead and the main rule is to avoid plans made by parents. Linklater’s graduation night sticks with kids free to roam on their own and have a wild time. He has a terrific way with performances that include a string of memorable faces that became much better-known, plus a couple of future stars.

"You have nothing to fear, after all, I'm dead - or am I?" Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for an indie survival thriller titled Captors, another new film made by the filmmaker James Cullen Bressack - who's been churning out mostly dull action films with Bruce Willis recently. A story of survival set against the backdrop of a cold, bleak winter. It centers on a woman, Alys, who had been the victim of sex trafficking and escaped her captor in the dead of night. Ten years later, a man lures her to a cabin in the woods, where he will test her sanity and force her to fight to survive. Everything at this secluded place - including the food - is booby-trapped. And the man who lured her there might still be alive. Yulia Klass stars as Alys, with a cast including Bruce Davison, Josh Kelly, Michelle Burke, Michael Paré,...

Alright, alright, alright!
The cast of “Dazed and Confused” is reuniting to raise money for get-out-the-vote initiatives in Texas.
Original cast members Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Parker Posey, Jason London, Joey Lauren Adams, Adam Goldberg, Anthony Rapp, Rory Cochrane, Marissa Ribisi, Cole Hauser, Deena Martin, Esteban Powell, Christine Harnos, Wiley Wiggins, Michelle Burke, Mark Vandermeulen, Sasha Jenson, Jeremy Fox, Christin Hinojosa, Catherine Morris and Nicky Katt will come together virtually on Oct. 11 for a livestream script reading of Richard Linklater’s iconic 1993 stoner film.
Patton Oswalt is set to moderate a Q&a following the reading.
Money raised will benefit March for Science and the Voto Latino Foundation’s efforts to promote voting in Texas in the upcoming election. Once a Republican stronghold, Democrats believe they can turn the state blue on Nov. 3.
Texas does not allow voters to use Covid-19 as a reason to use a mail-in ballot.

A lot of actors perform well for one role and are then never heard from again while others have a spotty to fantastic career that spans for years and possibly decades. Michelle Burke is one of those that has had success in her life but started out quickly and never gained enough steam to really be called much of a legend, even though she has had several roles that people might recall. Apart from her time on Dazed and Confused she also featured in the Coneheads movie, which wasn’t well-received by a lot of people, as Connie, the daughter of

In his lengthy and varied career, Val Kilmer has played everyone from Jim Morrison to Doc Holliday to Mark Twain – in multiple projects. He’s played Moses in the lavish musical “The Ten Commandments” and voiced Kitt the car in the “Knight Rider” reboot. Along the way, he’s worked with filmmakers from Oliver Stone to Ron Howard and actors from Tom Cruise to Marlon Brando. In short, there’s no pigeonholing the actor who launched his career with broad comedies like “Top Secret!” and “Real Genius” before becoming a household name thanks to “Top Gun” – a role he’ll reprise in the upcoming sequel.
So it’s surprising to hear there’s something Kilmer hasn’t done, but that’s the case with “The Super,” which he says is his first straight-up genre thriller. Based on an idea from and produced by “Law & Order” mastermind Dick Wolf, “The Super...

I can't remember if I saw Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused when Universal unceremoniously dumped it into only 183 theaters on September 24, 1993, but seeing how it topped out at 191 theaters I have to assume I was among the masses that caught it on video shortly thereafter. No matter when I first saw it, I do remember when I fell in love with it. It was 1995, my freshman year in college and while I wasn't a teen of the '70s, it didn't take much to find a connection. My college roommate and I would damn near have this film playing on a loop, and while I can't speak for him, for me it hit home because while the film is centering on a junior high student's initiation into high school, I had a similar experience transitioning from high school to college. While many aspects of Dazed and Confused are teenage dreamworld scenarios,...

Party at the moon tower! Life was simpler back in 1976, when your biggest priority was acquiring Aerosmith tickets and your biggest concern was the impending paddling that might come from a power hungry rising senior. Richard Linklater‘s 1993 film Dazed and Confused chronicles less than 24 hours in a tiny Texas town, through the eyes of the various social stratospheres of the local high school. Despite consisting of a mostly unknown cast (including future Oscar winners) the film has become a cult classic, beloved by those who too believe that the best philosophy is just to keep L-i-v-i-n.

Last night a bunch of Texas filmmakers and lovers raised a glass in honor of home state greats like Annette O’Toole, Stephen Tobolowsky, Henry Thomas and Robin Wright. But the highlight of the evening was when Richard Linklater and some reunited cast members from the 1993 classic celebration of dumb, enviable teenage fun, Dazed and Confused, won their own Hall of Fame Award.
Linklater, who was 31 when he made the movie, told EW that he’d wanted to make the flip side of a John Hughes movie. “The drama is so low-key in Dazed. I don’t remember teenage being that dramatic.

It's been almost 20 years since "Dazed and Confused" was released in theaters -- and yesterday in Austin, TX, members of cult flick's cast celebrated the milestone anniversary. But while the movie featured stars like Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, Milla Jovovich, Jason London and Parker Posey, none of them showed to the screening. So, who did?The biggest names in the bunch were definitely Joey Lauren Adams (who would later star in "Big Daddy") and Anthony Rapp (who also originated the role of Mark in "Rent").Joining them were Michelle Burke Thomas, Marissa Ribisi, director Richard Linklater, Wiley Wiggins and Nicky Katt.Fun Fact: During the Q&A after the 20th Anniversary screening, Linklater revealed that Affleck's part almost went to another star -- Vince Vaughn!"Vince hasn't spoken to me since," Linklater reportedly said.Check out the gallery above to see how the entire cast has aged since the movie's 1993 release.

Tree Of Life (20th Century Fox) Terrence Malick’s latest effort is both the best film of 2011 and the finest work of his (arguably) mixed, but often masterly canon. A series of vignettes, mostly set in 1950s Texas, capture the memory of a man (Sean Penn) in present-day New York who looks back on his life, and his parents’ (Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain) troubled marriage, when word of his younger brother’s suicide reaches him. Almost indescribable beyond that, except to say no other film in history so perfectly evokes the magic and mystery of the human memory, which both crystalizes (and sometimes idealizes) the past. Like Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, this is a challenging, polarizing work that you must let wash over you. If you go along for the ride, you’re in for a unique, rewarding cinematic experience. Also available on Blu-ray disc.

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
Sometimes, an alien teen has to learn to make his way on Earth. Other times, they have very human problems while still on their home planet. Whether he wants to just fit in or she wants to see the world, alien teens are just like the terrestrial variety. This weekend’s I Am Number Four tries to show us, once again, just how hard it can be to be an alien teen. You have to get good grades in school and run away from a killer trying to track you down. Below are some of my favorites.
