Veteran stage and screen actor Gerald Castillo, who appeared in major TV series including “Saved By the Bell,” “General Hospital,” “Hill Street Blues,” “M*A*S*H” and “Dallas,” died May 4 at his home in Houston. He was 90.
Known for his work as Major Slater on “Saved by the Bell” and Judge Davis Wagner on “General Hospital,” Castillo developed a following for his roles in the two series.
Born in Chicago on Dec. 23, 1932, Gerald studied acting and stage direction at the Goodman Theater. Following his education, he acted on stages all across the nation, performing opposite Sherman Hemsley, Rita Moreno, Jessica Tandy, James Broderick and Jeanne Crain. After performing with Hemsley, “The Jeffersons” star convinced Castillo to pursue a film and TV career in Los Angeles.
Castillo then appeared in several feature films, including “Delta Force II,” “Kinjite,” “Death Wish IV,” “State of Emergency,” “Through Naked Eyes,” and “Above Suspicion.”

A superb thriller is now better than ever on 4K. We’ve always known why it rewards viewings: it’s both thrilling and funny. When Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam and Hector Elizondo hijack a subway train, Walter Matthau must scramble to collect a ransom while trying to figure out how they’ll make their escape. Peter Stone’s dialogue is delightful — the loud & mouthy ’70s New Yorkers are hilariously abrasive — and lovable. “Who wants to know?!!!” Includes a Blu-ray disc and a new commentary.

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick recently enjoyed a fun family night out. On Dec. 11, the couple attended opening night of "Some Like It Hot" on Broadway, with their three kids in tow. Their son, 20-year-old James Broderick, and 13-year-old twin daughters Marion and Tabitha Broderick joined the parents for a rare public appearance as a family.
With the shoe designer and trendsetter involved, it's no surprise the family coordinated for the night in style. Sjp appeared glamorous as ever in a sparkly blue dress and string of pearls, while her daughters wore matching slip dresses and floral kimono-style jackets in different colors. The former "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" actor and his son both looked sleek in tartan print, with Matthew in a plaid suit and James in a navy suit and patterned tie.
The outing marks the Brodericks's first public appearance as a family of five since 2017 when they...

The irony of Bob Clark's 1983 film "A Christmas Story" was that it was initially intended to be a satire, a wicked deconstruction of the placid, false, Normal Rockwell-ian idyll of 1950s Americana. Christmastime was not a time of peace and ease in "A Christmas Story," but a bitter world of selfishness, childhood greed, bullying, and disappointment. Over the years, "A Christmas Story" grew in estimation to such a degree that it now is run in Holiday-season 24-hour marathons on certain cable TV stations. What was once meant to dismantle nostalgia is now just a new generation's nostalgia.
The film was adapted to a stage musical in 2009, which was, in turn, broadcast on live TV in 2017. Some who pay close attention will also have noted that 2012 saw the release of the straight-to-video "A Christmas Story 2," with actor Braeden Lemasters playing a teenage version of Ralphie, the star of the first film,...

Singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie has announced on Facebook that he is retiring after a 50-year career of performing and acting.
Guthrie said ill health caused by a series of strokes led him to acknowledge that he was no longer up for the road. The pandemic and its cancellations also played a part in his decision to hang things up.
His “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” song, commonly referred to as “Alice’s Restaurant,” is a talking blues song that was released as the title track to his 1967 debut album. The song relates his tale of being arrested and convicted of dumping trash illegally, a crime which later saw him rejected by his draft board because of his criminal record. The title is a reference to a restaurant owned by Guthrie’s friends and played no role in the story.
The song served as the inspiration for the 1968 comedy film by Arthur Penn starring Guthrie as himself,...

We all have them. Families.
Whether they're abundant and generations are still in existence or if there are only a couple of you who make your world go around, odds are somewhere, someplace, there's someone you'd probably like to hide from on the holidays!
In the '70s and '80s it was difficult not to find a family's drama on television, but in the 2000s family drama got kicked aside for more violent pursuits. There may be families, but first there was a crime or a crime family. It became all about law and order.
This list isn't about mob families, or procedural dramas that feature families, but about shows where the family comes first.
One interesting note, though, is that six of these series feature the natural or accidental death of a loved one near the beginning to kick the drama into high gear. Nothing like death to bring a family together.

What a star-studded night! Tom Hanks and Sarah Jessica Parker were spotted laughing the night away at the Los Angeles Kings vs. New York Rangers game at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday in New York City. Parker -- who turns the big 5-0 today -- looked like she was having a blast with her son James Broderick. The "Sex and the City" star was pictured cheering on the Rangers, chatting with the Oscar-winning actor and even reading while at the game. The "Captain Phillips" star likewise enjoyed his night with his two boys, Truman Hanks and Chet Hanks. It definitely looked like Tom was super into the game, too. The actor was spotted screaming, holding up hand signs and smiling for the cameras. We'd love to be sitting next to these two stars -- click "Launch Gallery" above to see more fun photos from Tom and Sarah's night at the rink!

Sarah Jessica Parker and her son, James Broderick, adorably skipped their way to school in NYC this morning. It was apparently James's last day of class, and Sjp commemorated the occasion by snapping a pic of her son on her iPhone. Sjp has been all about her city strolls lately, whether she's taking James to class or taking in the sights with her twins Marion and Tabitha Broderick. She's a pro at dressing for the outdoors in her casual, urban style, but Sjp also takes it up a notch for nights out on the town. She got decked out last week to toast her pal L'Wren Scott at a handbag launch, and later joined Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher for the first annual Urban Zen Stephan Weiss Apple Awards. Sjp's husband, Matthew Broderick, had to miss the latter bash since he was off in La toasting Morgan Freeman at the legendary actor's AFI tribute.

Every time a celebrity I respect dies, I try my best to honor his memory the best way I can. Most of the time, this consists of a drink and some movie watching. When it came to honoring Sidney Lumet, there was almost limitless options to choose from. But since I wasn't planning on a 24 hour Lumetathon, I limited myself to two. First, I choose one of my favorite heist films ever: 1975's Dog Day Afternoon. Does the film stand the test of time, or is it a dated testament of a time long passed? Thankfully...the latter.
The Set Up:
It was supposed to be simple. A ten minute heist at a fairly unpopulated bank. They would go in, get the money, and get out. But fate had different plans in mind. And before they know it, robbers
Sonny (Al Pacino) and Sal (John Cazale) find themselves the...

The Education Of Matthew Broderick
How the most (arguably) iconic juvenile lead of the 1980s has not only matured into one of our finest character actors, but just keeps getting better

If we are all a combination of nature and nurture, actor Matthew Broderick is both. The son of acclaimed character actor James Broderick (best-known as the father on the 1970s hit series “Family”) and playwright/author/painter Patricia Broderick, Matthew’s upbringing in an artistic environment led him to take the stage at age 17, opposite his father in a production of On Valentine’s Day.

There is nothing like helping (or watching!) your little one pack their backpack for the first day of school. In goes brand-new pencils, crayons, and any other little odds and ends they feel they will need once they cross through the big double doors on their own. While stocking the pack and setting it by the front door is an exciting step as it leads them that much closer to starting school, parents first must begin their quest for the perfect backpack suitable for their toddler.
For younger kids brand new to the schoolyard, the standard sized backpacks are often much more than a toddler can handle. Fortunately, the smaller sized line of mini backpacks are becoming increasingly popular for the preschool crowd with several companies expanding their options and designs to create a nice blend of trendy and practicality. Most mini backpacks boast large, easy-to-grip zippers, spacious pockets, and...
