Earlier this week, Marvel revealed their new Marvel Now titles, one of which was Venom #1 by Mike Costa and Gerardo Sandoval. The atwork shown (see above) featured the classic Venom, leading many to wonder whether we might be about to see Eddie Brock return to the role, especially as the image was accompanied by the tag, "Lethal Arrival." However, things may not actually be that simple. "Venom is returning for an all-new series as part of Marvel Now! But which Venom? Mike Costa and Gerardo Sandoval have some big ideas, and fans are going to lose it when they learn who’s wearing the symbiote," Marvel Editor in Chief Axel Alonso told ComicBook.com. So, is that it for Flash Thompson? It certainly sounds that way, but chances are that this isn't Eddie Brock either. After all, Marvel is all about stunts and gimmicks these days, and Eddie being in...

Spider-Verse #1
Written by Mike Costa
Pencils by Andre Araujo and Stephen Sanders
Colors by Rachelle Rosenberg
Published by Marvel Comics
In the great wide Battleworld of Secret Wars spin-offs and tie-ins, Spider-Verse #1 stands out as a unique story that seeks to better understand the confusion and strange sense of familiarity our characters (and readers) find themselves in. With a variety of alternate worlds and timelines mashed together is a bizarre patchwork, one has to wonder which characters still exist and what they remember from their past lives. Written by Mike Costa with art by Andre Araujo and Steven Sanders, this debut issue is a fun and intriguing set-up for a tale of multiverse mystery.
Spinning out of the Spider-Verse event in Amazing Spider-Man, the plot revolves around Spider-Gwen, Spider-uk, Spider-Man India and Spider-Girl Anya Corazon. Costa opens with a narration from Spider-Gwen, who can’t seem to shake the memories of a different life.

Back in 1987 fans of G.I. Joe got an animated film that has gone on to become a pretty divisive movie during a time which was probably the height of the popularity for the G.I. Joe brand. Much like the Transformers animated film from the previous year it can quite plainly be seen as a feature length commercial for a new wave, maybe even a generation of characters. I was overseas as a kid when it was released and when one of my friends got this on VHS it was Huge news in my circle, a part of a close knit U.S. military community in Italy. Back then it was just awesome and when you click it on now you realize that the intro remains one of the best in cartoon history. Yes, there was a time when you watched this and afterwards you wanted and waited for a Pythona figure,...

Spinning out of the events of Marvel’s upcoming “Spider-Verse” event, the publisher has announced they will be launching Scarlet Spiders, a brand new limited series from writer Mike Costa and artist Paco Diaz. The new series will feature Kaine, the Ultimate Universe’s Jessica Drew, and an alternate universe Ben Reilly as they go up against the evil behind the events of Spider-Verse where the publisher teases that “not all of them will make it out alive!”
“Obviously I can’t give too much away just yet, but the group in Scarlet Spiders plays a very important role in stopping Morlun,” Editor Devin Lewis tells Marvel.com. “Without this group of three and their mission, there’s a decent chance that the Spider-Men from across the multiverse won’t even survive Morlun’s assault.”

After making some huge (and unfortunately controversial) announcements about Thor and Captain America before San Diego Comic Con, Marvel fleshed out future developments involving these characters and their titles. They also announced the first Star Wars comics since getting the license from Dark Horse. More details can be found in this article. A bulk of the announcements had to do with the upcoming “Spider-Verse” event spinning out of Dan Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man run, which will include every Spider-Man that Marvel currently has the rights to. (No Tobey or Andrew sadly.)

So it took all of one issue for the novelty of The Star Wars (#2, Jw Rinzler, Mike Mayhew, Dark Horse) to wear off. I liked the curio factor of the first issue of this new series, which takes George Lucas’s first draft of the Star Wars script as the basis for its plot. This issue sees the Empire launching its attack on the planet Aquilae, where General Luke Skywalker (closer in age and stature to Obi-Wan Kenobi in the actual film) leads the defence.
There’s some fun stuff to see, but ultimately, it’s a bit too much of a mess narratively to persevere with. It’s interesting to see the original Death Star design, which is pretty gnarly (basically, there’s more sticky-out bits) and it’s very weird to meet an R2-D2 that speaks English, but beyond that, things seem perhaps unsurprisingly under-developed. We...

Better late than never…
4th September
I bought lots of comics this week because there were lots of comics that I thought looked interesting. After being pleasantly surprised by the first book in the new Infinity (Jonathan Hickman, Jerome Opeña, Dustin Weaver, Marvel Comics) series, I was looking forward to the second issue. However, where the first issue was reasonably accessible and not a total mash of incomprehensible gibberish to any non-hardcore Marvel fans, the second has edged considerably towards this description. There’s a big space fight between The Avengers and The Builders and Thanos’s agents, the The Cull Obsidian (meaning ‘The Midnight Slaughter’, for those unfamiliar with synonyms) lay down a challenge to The Inhumans. There’s a twist at the end.
With so many factions, it’s hard to either a) understand what they all wish to achieve and b) know why this matters, if indeed it does.

God is Dead #1

Publisher: Avatar Press
Hickman does Avatar. Those three words are enough to make an industry stand-up and take notice. With Hickman’s Infinity in full swing over at Marvel and East of West blowing everything at Image out of the water, many are wondering what Hickman ‘unhinged’ will be like. With a smaller label like Avatar, a purveyor of some pretty twisted comics, Hickman’s latest indie offering has the potential to raise the label to new heights. Yet does an unbridled scope help God is Dead, or is it merely an afterthought product of neglect due to his busy schedule?
God is Dead tells the story of Zeus and his return to earth. Disgusted with the way humans have been treating his precious gift, Zeus summons all the deities...

Who in their right mind is going to passes the opportunity to have a curry night all paid for?
I had the opportunity to catch up with Robert Pereyda of Namco Bandai Games Inc, himself a contributing writer, and the other writers and artists that make up the Shiftylook operation for the games giant, including Jim Zub the writer of the very clever Skull Kickers published by Image comics. I asked Jim, the writers behind the strip for Skykid, Why Namco Bandai have created Shiftylook. "We're creating a series of web comics that are freely available online for fans of a range of game titles. We we're given free-reign to develop comics based on the old portfolio of Namco Bandai games".
If you're wondering who Namco Bandai are, you must have been either locked in a nuclear bunker, or you haven't experienced the sweaty coin-shovelling thrill of arcade games.

2012 will be the first year that GeekTrant will invade WonderCon, mostly due to the fact that it was moved down to Anaheim, CA this year which is right in our backyard. We're all pretty excited about attending this year, as we've heard it's a much smaller more intimate version of San Diego Comic Con.
WonderCon is set to open on Friday, March 16th and run through Sunday, March 18th at the Anaheim Convention Center. If you plan on attending let us know, and maybe we can meet up and hang out for a bit!
I've put stars next to the panels we are interested in attending. Check out the schedule, and let us know what you are looking forward to seeing most!

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this March. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.8 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant pile of Christmas tinsel since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The first fill-in artist on Justice League, although Gene Ha is certainly no slouch in that department. We also have new writers on Firestorm and Green Arrow, new backups in Justice League and Action Comics, and the DC 52 hits lucky number 7.
Shall we see who is the fariest of them all? Oh indeedy, let’s do!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this February. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.9 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant stack of returned copies of Holy Terror since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The new look of Darkseid, and we’re far enough into the new 52 books that it’s time for Batman to start crossing over in all of them. Plus Mara Jade, the red-haired assassin who fell in love with her blond-haired man she was sent to kill– oh, I’m sorry, that’s from Star Wars. This is Mera in a jade outfit. Our mistake.
Shall we? Surely!

I have a feeling that Cobra #6 is the calm before the storm. The really, really Big storm that's going to be rolling through the GI Joe titles in November and December as the Hunt for Cobra Commander storyline concludes.
I have some mixed feeling about this issue. While the there are some further developments in the overall arc, for some reason I get the feeling that there should have been more. Writer Mike Costa gives us another solid issue, but with the reveal of the new Cobra Commander just two issues away, I was expecting a lot more [...]...

Transformers #28
Story by Mike Costa, James Roberts
Script by Mike Costa

Letters by Shawn Lee
Covers by Linio Ramondelli
Idw Publishing
Release Date: October 19, 2011
Cover Price: $3.99
After reading issue Transformers #27 and Loving it, I have to admit, Transformers #28 was a bit of a let down. It was by no means terrible or unreadable or anything even close to that. But, it did have a couple of problems that kept me from enjoying it as much as I wanted to.
Story-wise, this issue is a lot of fun. Cover to cover action and it features what most of us Transformers fans love -- no humans! Mike Costa and James Roberts deliver what every Tf fan wants -- all-out war between the Autobots and Decepticons -- with a few really nice twists thrown in for good measure. All of our favorite characters each get an equal amount of "screen time,...

Idw Publishing has announced its new Smoke and Mirrors miniseries.
