As the social and political turmoil of 1960s America spilled into the 1970s, network television executives and producers knew they could no longer ignore the thorny issues being argued over kitchen tables and at work/school. The Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Equal Rights Amendment, etc. were driving a wedge between families and neighbors. So when Norman Lear trotted out the unrepentant bigot Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" in 1971, many people in the country felt seen. And while they might not agree on the hot-button topics explored on this show, they could at least laugh through their many disagreements.
There came a point, however (somewhere between President Richard M. Nixon's resignation and the end of the Vietnam War), where television viewers grew weary of all these socially conscious sitcoms. Yes, they were still watching them in huge numbers, but they needed a break from the nonstop tumult of their lives.

What began as a single segment titled “Love and the Television Set” on the anthology series “Love, American Style,” grew to become a top ten sitcom that lasted 11 seasons and defined “cool” for a generation. Set in 1950s Milwaukee, “Happy Days” debuted on January 15, 1974, and, although it was only a moderate success initially, became one of the most iconic TV series of its time.
Ron Howard was already a well-known TV star from his days as Opie Taylor on “The Andy Griffith Show,” so it’s not surprising this series centered around his all-American teenage character Richie Cunningham and his middle-class family. In fact, Howard’s appearance in the “Love, American Style” episode led to his casting by George Lucas in the equally nostalgic “American Graffiti” in 1973 — the success of which prompted ABC to pick up “Happy Days.” But it was the character of greaser Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli (Henry Winkler...

Elvis Presley‘s music and style were heavily featured throughout the television series Happy Days. The series, which focused on the decades of the 1950s and 60s, was a throwback to simpler times. The music reflected the eras and included some of Presley’s greatest hits. However, as the series’ cast ended its 11-season run, one Presley song took on a different meaning as it closed the book on the lives of the Cunningham Family and their friends.

The final Happy Days episode wrapped up over a decade of stories surrounding Howard and Marion Cunningham (Tom Bosley and Marion Ross), their children Richie (Ron Howard) and Joanie (Erin Moran), and their friends.

Behold — it’s Indiana Jones in embryonic form. Paramount’s South American adventure exploits Peruvian scenery and the ’50s exotica phenomenon that was the unique songstress Yma Sumac. The production receives hearty input from Charlton Heston, Nicole Maurey and Thomas Mitchell, but it’s mostly a relic today. Not because the Raiders films have stolen its thunder . . . because it’s plenty hokey, even for 1954.

It was an unusual ceremony, in which an Emmy rule change pitted series regulars against one-episode guest stars. In addition, two of the most awarded comedies of all time battled it out, a favorite drama lost the top spot and one of the most celebrated talk shows of all time finally received a top honor. This was also the last year that the Big Four networks received all the nominations for Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series. We’re throwing it back three decades to August 30, 1992, when Tim Allen, Kirstie Alley and Dennis Miller hosted the 44th Primetime Emmy Awards on Fox. Read on for our Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1992.
Between 1989 and 1992, “Cheers” and “Murphy Brown” volleyed the Best Comedy award back and forth. This was “Murphy’s” year, winning in this category for the second and final time. The other sitcoms up were “Brooklyn Bridge,” “Home Improvement” and “Seinfeld.

“I didn’t really think there were that many people out there who were interested in Mr. Miyagi,” Kevin Derek says. “But (it turns out) millions and millions of people are.”
Derek is a martial artist, producer, and documentarian, whose latest documentary, More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story, seeks to humanize the man behind some of pop culture’s most mythical characters. The timing for such a doc couldn’t have been better, but it turns out that was simply good fortune.

Chachi is not having such a happy day.
Scott Baio, a vocal Trump supporter, expressed his disappointment over former “Happy Days” co-stars staging a reunion to raise money for the Wisconsin Democratic Party.
“What a shame to use a classic show like Happy Days about Americana to promote an anti-American socialist,” Baio tweeted.
Hollywood megaproducer Ron Howard, who co-starred as Richie Cunningham alongside Baio on the classic 80’s sitcom , announced the event via Twitter on Monday.
“The most important election of our lifetimes is right around the corner and Wisconsin is a must-win state. So I’m thrilled to announce a #HappyDaysReunion to support @WisDems on Oct 25,” Howard tweeted.
Howard will be joined by “Happy Days” c0-stars Henry Winkler (Fonzie), Marion Ross (Marion) and Anson Williams (Potsie).
Shortly after the announcement, “Full House” star John Stamos jumped in on the action, asking if he could play Chachi to which Scott Baio fired back.

It’s another big-star MGM romantic comedy, and not exactly a classic. Debbie Reynolds and Glenn Ford pick their way through a travelogue story that seems made of leftovers from I Love Lucy, inventing flat-farce gimmicks to sex things up without offending the Production Code. What’s the movie most remembered for? It features the exotic concept car that became TV’s Batmobile.

In statements given to Deadline, Happy Days stars remembered Penny Marshall, who died on Monday. She starred in the sitcom’s spinoff Laverne & Shirley.
“Penny was as courageous as she was talented, and broke down the wall for women directors. Penny will be missed, but her talent and inspiration is evergreen,” said Anson Williams, who played Potsie on the iconic television show.
Marion Ross, who played matriarch Mrs. Cunningham said, “Our dear sweet Penny has gone up to see Garry. So, there will no doubt be happier days in heaven, just as they made every day happy for us here on earth.”
“So sad to hear about Penny’s passing,” said Don Most, who played Ralph. “She was a very funny, gifted and deceptively smart woman. There will be a lot more laughs up in heaven. Rip Penny.”

Stars across Hollywood are mourning Penny Marshall, who died Monday night at her Hollywood Hills home due to complications from diabetes, Variety has confirmed. The “Laverne & Shirley” star was 75.
Marshall first rose to fame playing Laverne DeFazio in the hit ABC series “Laverne & Shirley” before going on to become the first woman to direct a film that grossed more than $100 million and the first woman to direct two films that grossed more than $100 million. She was also only the second woman director to see her film Oscar-nominated for best picture.
Rob Reiner, her ex-husband of eight years, remembered his relationship with Marshall fondly, praising her gift for comedy and her natural funny bone. “I loved Penny. I grew up with her. Any woman that’s ever played the role of a TV mom has likely gained some attention with fans since their roles have changed greatly over the course of the last several decades. Marion Ross was one of those that played such a role with great skill and kept to the times it would seem since she played none other than Marion Cunningham on Happy Days. She did have many other roles aside from this but as many people would claim, and rightfully so, she’s gone down in the hall of fame as far as fans are concerned when it comes

On-screen, they were happily married Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham. But off-screen, Happy Days co-stars Marion Ross and Tom Bosley's relationship was tense at first. The two surprisingly didn't click "for a couple of years," Marion revealed to Megyn Kelly during an appearance on the Today show on Tuesday, April 3. "Either Tom Bosley had somebody else in mind right at the beginning... but I had a very small part at the beginning. My lines were like, ‘Oh, Howard,’ ‘Oh, children, you’re not eating,'" the 89-year-old actress explained. After the early seaons passed, however, Marion was able to learn how to get along with Tom. "So we had to work our way through that. Because I learned to love him, I loved him and we became very close friends," she added of her on-screen husband, who passed away in 2010. They went on to star side-by-side together for 11 seasons on the beloved sitcom.

Sam Rockwell half-jokingly said that if he won the best supporting actor Oscar for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, he would finally marry his girlfriend of more than 10 years, Iron Man 2 co-star Leslie Bibb. He did take home the statuette, and a source who knows the couple says, "Sam's not in a rush, and Leslie says she's fine the way things are, but who knows — a promise is a promise." You can't blame Sam, 49, for wanting to take a pause and enjoy his moment of glory. After all, he's been toiling as a character actor for years, earning raves but not much money or fame for films like 2009's sci-fi cult fave Moon and 2002's Chuck Barris biopic Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. "I think of myself as a journeyman actor," says Sam. "I've got some talent, and I work hard." Sam and his girlfriend, Leslie. (Photo Credit: Getty Images...

Despite a 65-year career in show business, Happy Days star Marion Ross didn't want to write her memoir. "I have prided myself on living such a nice, careful life," she exclusively tells Closer Weekly. "It's not very dramatic." But when her son, Jim Meskimen, urged her, she began recalling lots of stories, like the time she made Cary Grant cry on the set of 1959's Operation Petticoat. "One morning Cary sat down beside me," she says. "I said, 'I don't think I should go down in the submarine because I am going to have a baby. I'm two months pregnant!' He started to cry and it was a wonderful moment between Cary and me. At that point, he never had a child [but always wanted one]. Years later, he had Jennifer." Marion on Happy Days. "Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don't you believe a word of it," Billy, the reverend known as America's Pastor, once said. "I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God." And when Billy passed away at age 99 on Feb. 21, rather than feeling sad, his daughter Ruth Graham, 67, exclusively echoed that sentiment to Closer Weekly. "This really is a glorious day. My father is finally free," she said. As many mourned his passing, plans were set in motion to lay Billy to rest on March 2 on the grounds of the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, Nc next to his beloved wife, Ruth Graham, who passed away in 2007. His coffin, "a simple plywood casket like my mother's," son Franklin Graham explained, "was built by convicted murderers at Angola Prison," where...

He knocked and said, 'I have some of the original Mouseketeers on my bus — can we come in and watch Annette with you?' And they went, 'Oh my!'" This nearly forgotten Sci-fi masterpiece should have been a monster hit. For some reason Universal didn’t think that a computer menace was commercial — the year after 2001. The superior drama sells a tough concept: the government activates a defense computer programmed to keep the peace. It does exactly that, but by holding the world hostage while it makes itself a God above mankind.

40 years after the premiere of Laverne & Shirley, Cindy Williams opens up to Et about what it was like shooting the revered show.
The 69-year-old actress sat down with Et's Nischelle Turner, shortly after guest appearing on The Odd Couple, and shared that the famous Laverne & Shirley opening sequence was an idea that Penny's brother and show co-creator, the late Garry Marshall, came up with on the spot.
"We were out on the lot at Paramount on New York street, and he said, 'Penny, teach Cindy that little dance you did on the way to school with your chums,'" Williams recalled. "And he said action and we did it once, and I didn't get it -- the up and down, 'Schlemiel! Schlimazel!' -- and so the second take I got it, and he said, 'Ok that's good. We're out of here.'"
