When Rufus Wainwright was asked to write a closing theme song for “Rebel Hearts,” a documentary about a renegade order of socially activist nuns that opens this weekend, he didn’t require the preamble that virtually any other singer-songwriter would have. It was intergenerationally personal for him, as he was already intimately familiar with the subject matter, thanks to his grandfather’s girlfriend having been part of the order of nuns that got in trouble with the Catholic church in the 1960s, and having heard her story over the years.
The result is “Secret Sister,” a compelling song that evokes both spiritual mysteries and calls to concrete action, and which appears on the “Rebel Hearts” soundtrack along with another original song, Sharon Van Etten’s opening “Conjunction.” Variety has the premiere of an excerpt from Wainwright’s song (below), along with some of the historic and modern footage and animation from director Pedros Kos’ film,...

Back in 1968, the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary got into trouble with the Bishop of Los Angeles. Rather than submit to the authority of the Catholic Church, these women, who took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience when they married Jesus Christ, fought for their autonomy as educators at Immaculate Heart College and defied the powerful patriarchy that tried to keep them in their place. The nuns had more college degrees than the priests who sought to dominate them, branding them as blasphemers.
During the turbulent upheavals of the anti-war and feminist movements, the rebel nuns fought for their college, freedom, equality, and their own livelihoods. They joined the movements protesting for social justice, earned support from political activists like Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden, and won their independence from the Catholic Church. The Immaculate Heart community survives to this day.

The entertainment industry’s “unsung heroes” — as Quentin Tarantino has described Mary Ramos for her significant contribution to his entire filmography — celebrated the outstanding achievements of their peers at the 10th annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards on Thursday night at the Wiltern. And who can blame these hardworking but vastly underpaid professionals for tooting their own horns since the Motion Picture Academy refuses to validate their work with an Oscar category? Coincidentally, the winners also helped to shine a light on critically acclaimed films featuring black casts that were snubbed by the Academy, much like music supervisors themselves.
The big news of the night: Women rock! Unlike every other Hollywood award show, the majority of winners — 10 out of 15, in fact — were female. (But then this may be the only guild that has nearly achieved gender parity among members and women outnumber men as board members.) “I met Quentin Tarantino 28 years ago and after that,...

It’s been a long road to Television Academy acceptance for music supervisors. In 2015, after years of lobbying, music supervisors gained entry to the music branch. In 2017, they got their own category at the Emmys, but weren’t allowed to vote in any other music competition. This year, music supervisors can vote in all seven music categories, thrilling some, enraging others.
In fact, you could say no one was happy. For the many composers and songwriters who make up the bulk of the approximately 600 members of the Academy “peer group,” as the branch is officially called, their efforts to keep music supervision out of contention as a category worthy of recognizing, have been thwarted. At the same time, some music supervisors are upset with how the new outstanding music supervision category is being handled — essentially questioning the Academy’s ability to judge the placement of songs or other musical works into programs.

For the first time in Coldplay’s career, they will be contributing an original song for a movie soundtrack, and they’ve partnered with Lionsgate for one of the biggest films of the year in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
The new song, Atlas, is due to be released on 26th August, ahead of the movie’s release this November. The lyrics landed online a few hours ago, courtesy of a tweet from the band, giving a first glimpse at the song ahead of its debut later in the month.
And the good news doesn’t end there, because a new trailer has debuted online, giving another ninety-second look at the upcoming blockbuster sequel, following the first full-length trailer that premiered at Comic-Con.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning...

You know The Hunger Games is special. We know The Hunger Games is special. Now, LionsGate reveals that they know its special, too.
You may have heard (because we reported it) Hollywood legend Danny Elfman will be behind the soundtrack of the film adapted from the Suzanne Collins best seller. Well, guess what. He’s going to have a little help from another music giant. “In an unprecedented collaboration,” reports THR, “12-time Grammy winner T Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart, Robert Plant and Allison Krauss’s Raising Sand)” will join Elfman as Executive Music Producer for The Hunger Games. In fact, he will produce songs for the soundtrack, to be composed by Elfman (Alice in Wonderland, Spider-Man).
“The Hunger Games is such a special property,” said LionsGate’s Head of Film Music Tracy McKnight in a statement. “It has worldwide mass appeal, but it’s also sophisticated, cerebral, soulful and rebellious.

Lionsgate has announced that Academy Award winner T Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart, Cold Mountain), and Academy Award nominated composer of awesomeness Danny Elfman (Beetle Juice, Batman, Army of Darkness, Edward Scissorhands and many more films) will be working together on creating the music for the highly anticipated film The Hunger Games, which is being directed by Gary Ross.
This is a fantastically awesome collaboration, and I'm sure these two musical talents will come up with one hell of a great soundtrack for this movie. Lionsgate's head of film music Tracy McKnight had this to say in a statement,
The Hunger Games is such a special property – it has worldwide mass appeal, but it's also sophisticated, cerebral, soulful, and rebellious. We needed a composer who can translate these qualities musically, and we have not one but two incredible artists in an absolutely thrilling first time ever collaboration.

[1] Danny Elfman and T-Bone Burnett are set to team up to score The Hunger Games, Gary Ross' adaptation of Suzanne Collins' dystopian Ya novel. Burnett will also produce songs for the soundtrack, as the film's Executive Music Producer. I probably don't need to tell you that this is an impressively high-profile collaboration (but I will anyway) -- Burnett is an artist and producer with 40 years of experience and 12 Grammys to his name, while Elfman is a four-time Oscar nominee for his work on Men in Black, Good Will Hunting, Big Fish and Milk. Quintessential Sundance experience: I arrived in Park City earlier today. Got my badge. Went to The Troll Hunter because, well, I like monster movies. And trolls? I love trolls! The Troll Hunter is kind of like Troll 2, except with, you know – good special effects, decent actors, a coherent story…that being said, I’m a die-hard Troll 2 fan and will continue to sing its praises.
But I digress.
After The Troll Hunter, I saw a film that will probably go down as the worst of the festival. Tons of walkouts. Awkward laughter. Not really a “so-bad-it’s-good” movie. Just awful. I won’t name it. But I’ll devote another post to describing the experience of sitting in that theater for over two hours. What I’d like to describe right now, though, is this:
As I was leaving the Holiday theater, a Sundance volunteer yelled: “Hey – the...
