Earlier today, we were sad to hear that veteran character actor Louis Gossett Jr had passed away at 87. While we have to get used to the fact that our favorite actors are all human, and like all of us, eventually pass away, it can’t help but hurt anytime we lose a legend like this. But he leaves behind a rich legacy, so let’s look back at five of his coolest roles.
An Officer and a Gentleman:
Louis Gossett Jr. won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in this, and next to R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket, he’s likely the guy everyone pictures when they think of a drill sergeant. While folks usually think of this as a romance due to stars Richard Gere and Debra Winger and the famous Joe Cocker song, “Up Where We Belong,” the R-rated movie is a lot harder than you remember.

If FX’s Justified: City Primeval has left you champing at the bit to see grown-up Willa with her mom Winona, franchise vet Natalie Zea and TV daughter Vivian Olyphant just came through with a “first look” photo, taken on a SAG-AFTRA picket line.
Though Willa was last glimpsed on the original Justified as a wee tyke (in the April 2015 series finale), City Primeval some eight years later reintroduced Raylan and Winona’s kid as a full-on, towering 15-year-old (played by Timothy Olyphant’s real-life daughter).

If there was ever an actor worthy of the distinction of "America's Sweetheart," it's Meg Ryan, who has been appearing in films since 1981. Effortlessly charming and with an often easygoing magnetism whenever she's on-screen, Ryan channels her natural talents effectively in romantic comedies and family-friendly fare. However, Ryan also possesses a much wider range than many give her credit for, delivering solid work in military dramas and character studies while occasionally branching out into hard science-fiction and fantasy.
Despite performing in dozens of film roles over the past 40-plus years, Ryan is one of her generation's more underrated actors. In fact, though millions of moviegoers adore her and her work, Ryan has yet to earn an Academy Award nomination of any kind. With that in mind, here are the 14 best Meg Ryan movies spanning her feature film career so far.

This almost felt like a Criminal Minds' take on a Valentine's Day episode, pushed unnaturally back by the Olympic hiatus.
That, and the whole Barnes fiasco.
Two tales of love gone wrong were featured on Criminal Minds Season 13 Episode 18.
Let's start with the midnight callers getting murdered by one twisted Romeo.
Or Juliet, as the unsub ended up being.
The episode played like a clever twist on the Clint Eastwood movie Play Misty for Me, only with the DJ's obsessed fans being killed by his paranoid wife.
Related: Criminal Minds Season 13 Episode 17 Review: The Capilanos
My money was on DJ Craig being the unsub, although I couldn't come up with a motive for the killings.
I know, I know. An understandable motive is never a requirement on this series. Most times, the murders only make any kind of sense in the unsub's mind.
But this spree actually had a warped kind of logic.

There are two questions a viewer might ask going into the third season of Bosch. The first is what Bosch offers that other television shows about homicide detectives do not, and the second is what a third season of Bosch offers that the first two seasons did not.
The first of these answers comes easily: Bosch offers one of the most patient, intelligent, intriguing police procedural narratives on television, eschewing cliffhangers and easy answers while embracing slow pacing, character development, and escalating tension. Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) is a compelling character, a far-from-perfect father chased by his childhood demons. The directing, the acting, and the writing all hold attention and merit high ratings. Even the cinematography deserves praise. Unlike many other mystery shows – think Foyle’s War or Sherlock – Bosch does not fall apart with hokiness when it comes time for a shootout or car chase.

If you were a TV critic from 1956 to 1976, you would have witnessed some big changes in the business: the rise and fall of the Western as the dominant primetime genre, or the color TV boom, or CBS' shift from silly rural comedies to socially conscious ones like All in the Family and M*A*S*H. If you covered the beat from 1976 to 1996, you would have written about Hill Street Blues and its many imitators, the classic years of SNL, and the early days of original cable programming. Almost any 20-year span would give you a front row seat to enormous artistic and technological change. As of this week, I've been professionally writing about television for exactly 20 years(*), and it's safe to say that the only two-decade period that featured a more radical transformation in how television was made and consumed would be back when the medium was first introduced into America's living rooms.

With "Justified" over (here's my series finale review), I got on the phone with showrunner Graham Yost to discuss why certain characters lived, others died, and which characters (Mags? Quarles?) he might have brought back under different circumstances, all coming up just as soon as I come back here with a jackhammer... I want to start with the hat, because I know it was one of the few significant creative disagreements you ever had with Elmore (Leonard). At what point did you decide you wanted Raylan to end the series wearing the smaller Stetson that met with his approval? Graham Yost: Pretty early on in the season, we knew we wanted to create a character who really modeled himself after Raylan to one degree or another, and he would get a hat, and Raylan would end up with the bad guy's hat. It's still not a perfect match for what Elmore wanted,...

Tonight, I have an interview with Graham Yost about who lived, who died, and why, and I have a review of the series finale coming up just as soon as we identify the worst possible ice cream flavor... "We dug coal together." -Boyd Given all the plates left spinning at the end of "Collateral," Yost — who wrote the finale with longtime "Justified" writers Fred Golan, Dave Andron and Benjamin Cavell — could have very easily gone to FX and requested 90 minutes or more in order to properly wrap things up. Instead, "The Promise" clocks in at only a few minutes longer than average (there was at least one episode last season that was longer than this), and it all but concludes the season's many intersecting plotlines by the halfway point, even putting on "You'll Never Leave...

Titus Welliver isn't the first actor I might have thought of to play Lapd homicide cop Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch, hero of 17 best-selling mystery novels and counting by Michael Connelly (plus multiple appearances in Connelly's "Lincoln Lawyer" series). But that's more because the book series started so long ago, and has allowed Harry to age in real time, so my mental image of him is much older than the "Deadwood" alum. In "Bosch," a new TV series whose first season can be streamed on Amazon Prime starting today, Welliver plays a younger and slightly mellower version of Harry. Connelly and producer Eric Overmyer ("The Wire," "Tremé") adapted the first season from pieces of three different Bosch novels ("The Concrete Blonde," "City of Bones" and "Echo Park"), and tweaks some biographical details. (Over the course of the early books, for instance, Bosch got married, divorced, and had a daughter who's on the...

2 | Why doesn’t America’s Next Top Model contestant Denzel have to wear his ugly beard weave all the time? Doesn’t he deserve to have it put back as punishment for his comments about Will? And which CW show will he get a walk-on role on?

ABC might not be able to make Selfie happen — the Tuesday-night rom-com is pretty cute, though, despite its title — but this week’s How to Get Away With Murder showed us that the Kardashians’ favorite form of photography isn’t without some value.

Apart from being one of my favorite actors, Donal Logue is also coming up in three of my favorite shows. Unfortunately (maybe), once in a while you find yourself in an interview that turns out, somehow, not to actually be one. You have your questions set out. You know the shows and the talking points. Your subject is equally prepared to run through the routine of extolling the virtues of whatever they happen to be working on. But, it doesn’t end up going that way.
These are the interviews which ultimately find you running out of time, and scrambling for something, and spitting out, “Umm… tell me about the show.”
Or, to put it another way, these are the interviews that make you glad you don’t work for someone, who might not think it’s actually completely brilliant that you killed thirty minutes talking to Donal Logue as...

Luck ran out on HBO nearly a year ago, but the horse racing drama is continuing on thanks to writer John Perrotta. As part of a blog on America's Best Racing, a site designed to boost thoroughbred racing events in North America, Perrotta is contributing weekly posts detailing scenes involving some of the characters featured in Luck. The first installment posted Feb. 14 and featured "the Degenerates" -- the characters portrayed by Kevin Dunn, Ian Hart, Ritchie Coster and Jason Gedrick on the HBO show -- along with those played by the stars of the David Milch and Michael Mann drama: Dustin

Episode Reviews
There’s no doubting that television has changed dramatically in the last few years, particularly in regards to the acclaimed serialized fiction shows that have ground out a new niche as cinematic storytelling per excellence. Think of how Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead, and Breaking Bad have utterly dwarfed episodic entertainment tailored to casual audiences. Randomly switch on Homeland midseason and you’ll be completely lost. Ten years ago, the hottest property on network TV would have allowed for a cave dweller to tune into any episode and get an hour’s satisfaction. This new form revolution certainly applies to Dexter, a show with its origins in literature adaptation and the narrative style to prove it. In many ways, you have to review the whole year’s pickings to get a real picture of where the show is headed, a better analysis of the quality on show.

Zap2it: You've raised three sons ranging in age from 22 to 15; are any of them aspiring actors?
Jason Gedrick: My youngest son actually co-starred in a short film I was in, and he was really terrific. At that point, he said, "I really don't like this. There's too much waiting around. This is for the birds." I said, "Believe me; I can relate."
That was eight, nine years ago, and he's just starting to maybe think about getting back into it. He's got some very, very wonderful instincts. He's got some physical gestures and nuance that I wish I had at his age.
Zap2it: Recently, you've been guest-starring in the current season of Showtime's "Dexter," and you were part of an ensemble cast in the short-lived HBO series "Luck." You've been a series lead before -- do you feel the itch to try that again?

Patricia Arquette could be the key to stopping a murderer on this week's "Law & Order: Svu."
In HuffPost TV's exclusive sneak peek below, Arquette's character, Jeannie, a prostitute, is questioned by Detectives Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Amaro (Danny Pino) after one of her regular Johns snaps. It seems Jeannie and Benson have a history together.
Here's how NBC describes the episode:
When a man goes on a killing rampage through New York, the lead FBI agent (guest star Jason Gedrick) calls upon the Svu to get information from the suspect's last known contact – a prostitute (guest star Patricia Arquette) who had been involved in one of Benson's (Hargitay) old cases. As the detectives work with her to track down the killer, they find themselves drawn into her world and must fight to save her life. Dexter, Season 7, Episode 10: “The Dark…Whatever”
Written by Lauren Gussis, Jace Richdale & Scott Reynolds
Directed by Michael Lehmann
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on Showtime
Having made a significant and risky decision within the show’s narrative last week, ‘The Dark…Whatever’ proved to be a battle of how many steps backwards by the Dexter writing team could be rescued by positive movements forward, in effect whether good choices could offset the poor ones. By the end of the episode, the show came up out ahead, but only just, setting up to a very interesting final hurdle.
The unexpected visit of Hannah’s abusive, ex-con father unexpectedly proves to be hopeful as, despite Dexter’s reservations, the man seems to be reformed with a new appreciation for his daughter and ambitions to set up a new life in peace. It’s not long, however, before the real motives start...

Dexter Season 7 Episode 10 Preview: The Dark…Whatever
Dexter Season 7 has been a delightful return to the wonderfully twisted world of serial killing. Dexter’s relationship with Deb went in an entirely new direction and we were introduced to Isaak Sirko (Ray Stevenson), who arguably sits in the top five list of Dexter favorite villains.
Then the unthinkable happened in Dexter Episode 7.09, “Helter Skelter.”
Isaak was killed, and not by Dexter. It was an odd turn to say the least. One of Dexter’s trademark endings has always been to have the “season’s villain” end up on Dexter’s kill table. Now, with three more episodes left in this season. We have to look elsewhere for that final kill.
Perhaps that man will be George (Jason Gedrick), the strip club owner who killed Isaak. George has been putting pressure on Quinn recently. If he decides to escalate his kung-fu grip on Quinn,...

We’ve crossed the halfway point in Dexter Season 7. Here’s the current rundown on key characters and relationships, ranked by grade.
The Villain – Isaak Sirko (Ray Stevenson)
Starting with the Ice Truck Killer in Season 1, Dexter became known for its remarkable villains. However, that all came to an end after John Lithgow stole the show as Trinity in Season 4. Season 5 featured Jordan Chase (Jonny Lee Miller), a motivational speaker by day and sexual deviant by night. He was bland to say the least. Then, Season 6 hit us with the Doomsday curve ball – mark it just plain bad.
Season 7 finally takes us back to a villain we can truly fear. Not only is Isaak Sirko Russian mafia, he’s also wicked awesome in a fight. He’s the kind of boss who has no problems with getting his hands dirty. In Episode 7.5, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) put him behind bars.

In Showtime's Sunday-night crime drama "Dexter," Michael C. Hall plays the title role of a blood-spatter expert for a Miami police department, who moonlights as a serial killer targeting other killers.
You might think the show is filmed in Florida. It's not. It's filmed in Hollywood.
You might also think that shooting a show about a killer stalking killers would make for an intense, high-stress set.
Not so much, says guest star Jason Gedrick, who's playing George Novikov, the mob-connected owner of a Miami gentleman's club.

He may be menacing each Sunday night as Miami gentlemen's-club-owner George Novikov on Showtime's crusading-serial-killer drama "Dexter," but in real life, Jason Gedrick is a single father of three sons, ranging in age from 22 to 14.
So when Gedrick got the script for Hallmark Channel's "The Wishing Tree," airing Saturday(Nov. 10), it not only reminded him of lessons he's learned as a father, but also of people who influenced him in his own life.

Law & Order: Svu was looking for a pair of actresses to portray a mother and daughter in an upcoming episode, casting news that when coupled with the basic knowledge of how Svu usually handles females characters – if it’s just out of reach for you, just remind yourself the special victims unit usually investigates crimes involving sexual assault – spells disaster for at least one of the actresses. But before we can discuss the terrible things that may or may not be happening to these women, we need to know who has been cast. Do the names Anne Meara and Patricia Arquette mean anything to you?

Hank’S Knowledge Of Nick’S World Has Him Second Guessing A Past Case -- Hank (Russell Hornsby) starts reflecting on an arrest he made earlier in his career regarding a man (guest star Jason Gedrick) who committed murder claiming "self-defense against monsters." With the man’s death sentence rapidly approaching and the knowledge he’s recently gathered from Nick (David Giuntoli), Hank begins to wonder if there was more truth to the man’s seemingly absurd story than he once thought. Back at the spice shop, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) finds himself involved in a situation he never saw coming.
