Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is having quite the year. His tennis comedy/love triangle film “Challengers,” starring Zendaya, has already grossed $68 million worldwide—not bad for a drama without a major I.P. attached to it— and his next film, “Queer,” an adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novel starring Daniel Craig, is said to be done and will probably debut during the fall film festival circuit later this year.

The team behind “Challengers” have already had a game, set, match for being a definitive film of 2024. Yet its trio of actors, including Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist, seem to have no plans on taking a breather. O’Connor’s even ready to team up with director Luca Guadagnino once again.
Sure, the ending of “Challengers” might be considered ambiguous, with Zendaya even going so far as to say the final scene was “confusing” in an interview with the New York Times. What is as clear as Patrick (O’Connor) telegraphing his extramarital tryst with Tashi (Zendaya) to her husband Art (Faist) is where these buzzy stars are heading to next.
Zendaya has proven to be a box office selling point, successfully cementing her lead star status for the big screen with “Challengers” becoming director Luca Guadagnino’s highest opening film to date, surpassing Timothée Chalamet-led “Call Me By Your Name.

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to see Koba from the “Planet of the Apes” reboot film series in other movies? Neither had we here at IndieWire. That was until last week when @jbromovies posted this tweet to X, formerly known as Twitter.
Koba should be in every movie

Little did @jbromovies know what they were in for as what followed was an avalanche of photoshopped masterpieces that embed “Apes” character Koba into every piece of cinema imaginable. From “Challengers” to “The Lion King,” there are literally too many gems to choose from, but IndieWire has put together a collection of the eight best, each featuring a possible arc for how Koba could be inserted into the plot of the film.

Don’t be surprised if you see Demi Moore on the Croisette — like, a lot. The veteran actress is set to make a mark at the Cannes Film Festival this year with a film in competition and a packed schedule to match.
Moore stars in filmmaker Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance opposite Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid. Little is known about Fargeat’s sophomore feature — she debuted with 2017’s stylish Revenge — other than that it’s being referred to as a feminist take on body horror.
Cannes has given The Substance a late-night slot for its world premiere on Sunday, May 19, confirming a busy weekend for Moore. As previously announced, the actress will also take on the role of godmother for luxury jewelry house Chopard’s Trophée Chopard gala ceremony. The event, at Carlton Beach Club on May 17, will see rising star honors presented to Challengers star Mike Faist and...

Following Challengers, Luca Guadagnino will next direct After The Hunt, adding Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield to the cast.
Luca Guadagnino is flying high at the moment with the release of Challengers, the highly-anticipated love triangle tennis drama that has been scoring excellent reviews.
Guadagnino also has Queer on the way later this year too. That sounds equally promising given that Guadagnino is directing Daniel Craig in an adaptation of the William Burroughs book of the same name. That one shot last year and is set to release sometime this year (we think).
Looking beyond that, Guagagnino has a packed slate (more on that below) but when news broke last month that the director would be working with Julia Roberts on a project for Amazon, we suspected it might get fast-tracked and that seems to be the case.

Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.
“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.
“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

Imagine’s Allan Mandelbaum brought the script to the production company and worked with CAA to land Roberts and Guadagnino. Guadagnino serves as a producer alongside Imagine’s Mandelbaum and Brian Grazer.

The 2024 summer movie season has seen its fair share of surprises at the box office with highly anticipated projects like The Fall Guy, Challengers, and underrated films like Cocorico and Tarot. However, despite the buzz, not all films managed to witness global success. Take, for example, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s star-studded The Fall Guy, which unfortunately failed to multiply it’s box office collection, despite initial hype.

The annual celebration of Mom brightened things up at the summer box office, with the first movie to open over $50 million since March. Read on for the weekend box office report.
The hopes for the summer box office were almost dashed by the poor showing of season opener “The Fall Guy” last weekend, so fortunately, this weekend didn’t follow suit. Of course, the big winner for the weekend was 20th Century’s franchise sequel “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which came into the weekend with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 80% Fresh, on par with “The Fall Guy.”
After making $6.6 million in Wednesday and Thursday previews and $22.2 million on Friday (including those previews), Disney has estimated “Apes” to open with $56.5 million, which is slightly higher than the $56.2 million opening for “War for the Planet of the Apes” in 2017.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) opened to $56.5 million, slightly above pre-opening projections, which is encouraging after “The Fall Guy” (Universal) last week. That’s a relief to theaters that hope summer releases meet their potential and buffer what is expected to be a major drop in revenues versus last year.
20th Century Fox released “Planet of the Apes” in 1968. For an old franchise, this is one that still has plenty of life: The “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opening matched the last “Planet of the Apes” installment in 2017 (albeit when tickets cost 15 percent less). Speaking of old franchises, it also beat the $55 million opening of the 2021 Bond entry “No Time to Die.” Disappointing B Cinemascore aside, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” seems poised for a solid run.

The mighty Planet of the Apes franchise ruled again at the box office, with the movie earning a mighty $56.5 million domestically (according to ComScore), which puts it right in line with the previous openings of Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($54.8 million) and War for the Planet of the Apes ($56.2 million). Dawn of the Planet of the Apes made a lot more at $72 million, but times have changed, and now a $50 million-plus opening is cause for celebration at the House of Mouse, with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes the first solid box office win for Disney (who are releasing through 20th Century Films) in a while. This is much more than the $40 million we predicted earlier this week.
However, there is one potential cloud on the horizon for the film. According to Deadline, the CinemaScore for the film has only garnered a B rating, which is low...

Updated: Primates ruled over the North American box office, as “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” collected $58.5 million in its first weekend of release.
That’s ahead of Sunday’s estimates of $56.8 million and enough to score the third-best opening of the year behind “Dune: Part Two” ($82 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million).
Inaugural sales for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” landed above early projections of $50 million to $55 million and towered over the nonexistent competition. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opened roughly even with two of the three prior installments in the rebooted franchise, landing behind only 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (a series-best $72 million) and ahead of 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes” ($56.2 million) and 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” ($54.8 million).

Zendaya has become one of the most influential celebrities in Hollywood. She has established herself as a force to be reckoned with through her acting skills, being regarded as an extremely talented actress. While her professional life has certainly earned her a reputation, she is also well-known for her fashion sense.
A still from Euphoria
The actress is a respected figure in the world of fashion, always making a statement with the clothing she adorns. However, such acclaim did not come easy, and the actress had to work towards it for many years. Recently, a close friend, Law Roach, spoke about a time when she wasn’t as successful and what her fashion choices were then.
It would seem that five brands refused to work with her when she was still starting out, and Zendaya held a grudge.

Zendaya’s Stylist Calls of “Big Five” Designers Who Snubbed The Challengers Star. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The current fashion “it girl” Zendaya was reportedly snubbed by five prominent designers’ houses back in the day. In an interview with The Cutting Room Floor shared on Patreon Thursday, May 9, the “Challengers” actress’ long-time stylist, Law Roach, revealed she has yet to wear looks from five fashion houses on the red carpet after they refused to dress her early in her career.
Roach, who has styled the “Dune” star since she was 14, has continued to work with the actress despite announcing his retirement from celebrity styling over a year ago. The current fashion “it girl” Zendaya was reportedly snubbed by five prominent designers’ houses back in the day. Stylist Law Roach revealed on “The Cutting Room Floor” podcast that Zendaya still hasn’t worn looks from five fashion houses after they refused to dress her early in her career.
“I would write the big five. I would write Saint Laurent, Chanel, Gucci, Valentino, Dior, and they would all say, ‘No, try again next year. She’s too green. She’s not on our calendar,’” Roach said during the interview.
“I still have the receipts,” he continued. “By the time she got to [the cover of] American Vogue [in 2017], she still had never worn any of those designers. She still hasn’t.”
Roach, who has styled the “Challengers” and “Dune” star since she was 14, clarified that Zendaya has worn designs by the “big five” in editorial shoots, but never in public or during red carpet appearances.

If traffic holds up, Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will succeed in opening to a solid $52 million to $56 million domestically for a first-place finish. Friday’s haul was $22.2 million, including $6.6 million in previews.
The Planet of the Apes franchise has always been a big player overseas, and the latest installment is opening around the globe timed to its North American release. Hopes are for an $80 million international launch.
The 20th Century and Disney movie is the second event pic of summer 2024 after Universal’s The Fall Guy, which left nerves frayed across Hollywood after opening to a disappointing $27.7 million over the May 5-7 frame. Tracking had suggested the action comedy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, would at least start off in the $32 million to $35 million range, which was already a subdued number.

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino knows how to make a goddamn movie. That was clear to fans of his earlier works, like the sumptuous "I Am Love," more than a decade ago. It was clear to most other people about five years ago when the bold one-two punch of "Call Me By Your Name" and "Suspiria" made moviegoers sit up and pay attention. And it's more clear than ever now, with the release of the director's latest (and reportedly biggest-budgeted) effort, the endlessly thrilling Zendaya-led sports drama "Challengers." Film after film, Guadagnino manages to tap into some hidden corners of our hearts by telling stories that are evocative and colorful, musical and sensual, messy and true.
Though Guadagnino has gained more attention in recent years, the filmmaker has actually been working since the '90s and has by now made eight narrative (or meta-narrative) features, a TV show, and several documentaries and shorts.

Chris Pine hopes he just found Luca Guadagnino’s next project: Disney’s “Princess Diaries 3.”
The actor and “Poolman” director proposed collaborating with the “Challengers” director for the third franchise installment during Entertainment Weekly’s Role Call Youtube series.
“‘Princess Diaries 3,’ where is it?’ Have you been reading my diary?” Pine quipped when revisiting his past roles. “I don’t know. I haven’t heard anything about it.”
However, Pine did have his own pitch for the film.
“You know, like, what it would be? It would be like a Luca Guadagnino film,” Pine said. “[If he] directs ‘Princess Diaries 3,’ now that is fucking fire.”
Of course, “Princess Diaries 3” would have to come after Guadagnino’s “Separate Rooms” with Lea Séydoux and Josh O’Connor. Guadagnino is also debuting “Queer” at Cannes 2024.

‘Dare’ (2009): Emmy Rossum, Zach Gilford, and Ashley Springer Star in ‘Challengers’ for Theater Kids
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Discovering the Power of a Dick… Ahead of Its Time
Non-monogamy became a common topic of conversation this spring as Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” made any mention of pro tennis the conversational equivalent of a three-way sex invite.
On dating apps, searches for “open relationships” continued to rise in popularity just as reality television embraced multi-partnered dynamics through shows like Peacock’s “Couple to Throuple.” Even in 2024, polyamory isn’t outright “mainstream” by any stretch of the imagination(s). But as far as contemporary relationships are concerned, the “three’s...

Law Roach has a great memory. The stylist said on Wednesday that his longtime client Zendaya still hasn’t donned looks from the “big five” fashion houses after they initially refused to dress her early in her career.
“I would write [to] the big five… and they would all say no,” Roach, who has styled Zendaya since she was 14, said during an appearance on The Cutting Room Floor podcast. He clarified he was referring to Chanel, Saint Laurent, Dior, Gucci and Valentino, who consistently told him, “Try again next year. She’s too green. She’s not on our calendar.”
“I still have the receipts,” Roach said, adding that their initial reluctance means he continues to steer clear of them. “By the time she got to [the cover of] American Vogue [in 2017], she still had never worn any of those designers. She still hasn’t.”

Challengers star Mike Faist and Talk to Me breakout Sophie Wilde have a date with Chopard during this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The luxury jeweler has selected the actors to receive the prestigious Trophée Chopard, an award doled out since 2001 at the invitation of the house’s Caroline Scheufele as a way to honor cinema’s rising stars. Faist and Wilde will receive the trophies during a glitzy dinner at Carlton Beach on May 17. As previously announced, godmother Demi Moore will take the stage and present the pair with the honors.
The winners are selected by an academy comprising previous winners as well as those who have served as godmothers and godfathers at the ceremony. Winners have included Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux, Diane Kruger, Niels Schneider, Florence Pugh, Jessie Buckley, Naomie Ackie and Daryl McCormack.
Faist can currently be seen on screen in Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers opposite Zendaya and Josh O’Connor.

Actor Michael Douglas, known for his roles in iconic films such as Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction and Disclosure, recently commented on the recent decrease in on-screen sex scenes.
Douglas, 79, expressed his thoughts on the matter in an interview with the U.K.’s Radio Times and highlighted the emergence of intimacy coordinators in the film industry.
“I’m past the age where I’ve got to worry about that,” Douglas said. “But it’s interesting with all the intimacy coordinators. It feels like executives taking control away from filmmakers — but there have been some terrible faux pas and harassment.”
Douglas shared his personal philosophy on intimate scenes on film: “Sex scenes are like fight scenes; it’s all choreographed. In my experience, you take responsibility as the man to make sure the woman is comfortable. You talk it through. You say, ‘Okay, I’m gonna touch you here if that’s all right.

The consensus out there seems to be that 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a sure bet to dominate the box office this weekend, with studio estimates putting it in the $50 million range. While that certainly seems reasonable considering the fact that the two last Apes movies, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes, opened with $72 million and $56 million, respectively, I’m not buying it.
The fact is, and I’m sorry to say this, the market has changed. Audiences will no doubt turn out to see Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which has been well-reviewed (including by me), but I also think a good chunk may opt to wait for its inevitable Disney Plus digital release. That’s why I do not think it’s going to open much north of $40 million.

The Baby Driver actor, Edgar Wright, is somewhat of a film critic in his downtime on social media. A few days back, he shared his thoughts on Challengers, and now it’s Furiosa’s turn. Having had the opportunity to watch the film beforehand, it seems he had an absolute blast.
Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa in the film’s trailer.
He rates this revenge movie a solid 10/10. Wright also mentioned that the film’s subtitle, “A Mad Max Saga,” lives up to its word, reminiscent of another revenge film classic, the 11-time Oscar-winning Ben-Hur. Here’s what he had to say about it.

Edgar Wright loves to talk about his favorite movies. And lavish praise on recent films as well, such as his enthusiastic response to “Challengers.” On May 7, he took to Twitter to post a long response about his latest obsession: George Miller’s upcoming “Furiosa.”
The film will make its debut at Cannes before opening in theaters May 24. But how do you follow up “Mad Max: Fury Road,” one of the most acclaimed action movies of this century? From the overwhelmingly positive first reactions, Miller’s answer appears to be: Don’t try to repeat yourself.
Wright believes Miller nailed it. Where “Fury Road” was a chase epic, “Furiosa” is a revenge film, Wright said.
“Even though I understand what it takes to make a film, I still don’t understand how Dr. George Miller does it,” Wright wrote. “I was lucky enough to see ‘Furiosa’ a month ago, and I...

From the very early days of cinema, the love triangle has been a staple of romantic comedies and heartbreaking dramas alike. In its classic form, there’s either two guys and two girls both interested in the same girl or guy, who finds themself torn between the two possibilities. Fizzy screwball comedies usually ended with the love triangle resolving in favor of the lead; see, for example, how Katharine Hepburn’s free-spirited heroine in 1938 comedy “Holiday” steals Cary Grant from under the nose of her own sister (Doris Nolan). In dramas, the ending tends to be a tad more bittersweet, leading to iconically devastating moments like Humphrey Bogart saying goodbye to Ingrid Bergman before she hops on a plane to escape to safety with her husband Victor (Paul Henreid) during the climax of “Casablanca.”
However a love triangle ends, its clear why the formula is such a repeating trope in...

Not many may have expected this, but now it’s all official. Ryan Gosling’s brand new action comedy The Fall Guy has dethroned Zendaya’s heavily marketed sports drama Challengers with the former grossing almost $28 million in the domestic box office and $64 million worldwide during the opening weekend.
David Leitch’s homage to his first ever work as a stunt man was initially quite a questionable competitor, but now the movie’s incredibly good performance in theaters proves that we were wrong all along.
Starring Barbie’s Ryan Gosling and Oppenheimer’s Emily Blunt, The Fall Guy follows Colt Seavers whose entire career is jeopardized after an accident which forces him to leave his job and girlfriend Jody, a camerawoman then.
Some time later Colt suddenly finds himself on the set of his ex-girlfriend's directorial debut that may now be totally ruined after the leading actor vanished for no reason.

Universal's "The Fall Guy" debuted with just $27.7 million domestically despite earning very good reviews, making for the worst start to the summer movie season in decades. But hope emerged in the form of one of cinema's most cherished franchises as "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" returned to theaters in honor of its 25th anniversary. An old hope, if you will. This once-maligned prequel to George Lucas' beloved sci-fi series helped make up the difference and made its way into the history books. Again.
"The Phantom Menace" re-release brought in $8.7 million domestically over the weekend, which was good enough to land at number two on the charts behind "Fall Guy" and ahead of the previous week's champion "Challengers" ($7.5 million). Internationally, "Episode I" added an additional $6.4 million for a global re-opening of $15.1 million. That's quite a...

Primates will rule (the box office) again!
Disney’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is aiming for $50 million to $55 million from 3,700 theaters in its domestic debut, which will easily be enough to tower over the box office chart. Those ticket sales are roughly even with two of the three prior installments in 20th Century’s rebooted “Planet of the Apes” franchise: 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes” opened to $56.2 million and 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” opened to $54.8 million, while 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” notched a series-best $72 million.
At the international box office, where “Apes” movies tend to make the bulk of their revenues, this installment is tracking to collect $80 million to $90 million. Based on those projections, the film should end up on Sunday with a solid $130 million to $140 million at the global box office.

Universal’s “The Fall Guy” debuted atop the U.K. and Ireland box office with £3.5 million ($4.5 million), according to numbers from Comscore.
But the force was strong with Disney’s 25th anniversary rerelease of “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,” as it debuted in second place with £1.1 million. This, when added to the £56.4 million grossed when it originally released in 1999, makes the film neck-and-neck with “Joker” at No. 30 on the all-time box office chart for the territory.
In its second weekend, Warner Bros.’ “Challengers,” headlined by Zendaya, moved down to third place with £986,885 for a total of £3.6 million. In fourth position, in its fourth weekend, Studiocanal’s “Back to Black” added £770,973 for a total of £10.5 million.
Rounding off the top five was Univeral’s “Kung Fu Panda 4,” which earned £562,704 in its sixth weekend for a total of £20.4 million.

You sickos have finally done it. Forced us into a conversation we thought was reserved for socials and online forums but is now turning mainstream. Are you happy? Do you feel proud of yourselves? It all started innocently enough, according to Vulture, when a commenter posted on a Q&a with Josh O’Connor in 2020, saying, “Josh could easily play Alfredo Linguini in [a] ‘Ratatouille’ movie.”
Not much was made of the comment initially, but in 2021, O’Connor admitted in an interview with Odessa Young that “Ratatouille” holds a soft spot in his heart and is one of the few films that can get him crying. Years later, he would add to this as he was making and marketing his recent films “La Chimera” and “Challengers,” saying Zendaya was a fan of ‘Ratatouille’ as well and that she and co-star Mike Faist would have viewing parties of it with him in between filming.

With several gowns reportedly being considered until almost the last moment, Zendaya’s choice for the 2024 Met Gala ultimately was a custom haute couture look from Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano as well as a surprise archival look — also by Galliano.
In the hours before the Challengers star and Met Gala co-chair arrived on the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the rumor mill had kicked into high gear about who she might be wearing. Multiple gowns were mentioned as contenders, a sign of the power Zendaya wields in the fashion industry.
But her first choice indeed reflected the blend of 19th century romance and modernity that Galliano creates like perhaps no other designer, with elements that subtly evoke the gala’s theme of “The Garden of Time.” The emerald green and electric blue gown is a custom design made of organza and sage-hued lamé crafted...

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace returned to theaters this weekend to celebrate both May The Fourth and the 1999 movie's 25th anniversary.
Despite receiving largely negative reviews from longtime Star Wars fans when it originally hit the big screen, the movie has already made upwards of $1 billion worldwide.
Despite often being dubbed the "worst" Star Wars movie - Attack of the Clones and The Rise of Skywalker would like a word - The Phantom Menace opened at #2 this weekend with an impressive $8.1 million at the North American box office.
Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt's The Fall Guy topped it, but George Lucas' Episode I beat the likes of Challengers, Civil War, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Tarot to earn that second place.
While this is a relatively quiet weekend at the box office, numbers like these put The Phantom Menace among the biggest re-releases ever. For context, while...
