It's hard to believe, but 2024 marks 40 years since the story of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began on the page. Idw plans to celebrate the anniversary with a new line of comic books, including a relaunch of the main series from Avengers and Thor writer Jason Aaron.
In the series, the prolific comic book writer plans to take the Heroes in a Half-Shell back to their gritty roots, bringing them back in line with the original black-and-white stories from creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' first four issues will feature a revolving door of artists with Joëlle Jones (Catwoman) kicking things off in a Raphael-focused first issue. The second instalment shifts the spotlight to Michelangelo with art by Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire).
Then, in issue #3, Paper Girls co-creator Cliff Chiang will put his spin on Leonardo before Donatello takes centre stage in the Chris Burnham-illustrated (Batman Incorporated) fourth chapter.

All-Star Batman‘s latest issue kicks off a brand-new arc, after issue #9 wrapped up the thrilling ‘Ends of the Earth’ storyline with aplomb. We’ve been promised that ‘The First Ally’ will introduce a new foe into Batman’s rogues gallery who has some ties to the character’s beginnings. While we haven’t got to that exciting material yet, issue #10 is still a terrific comic.
Alfred fans, you’re in luck. Batman’s faithful butler – his first ally, if you like – is the star of the show this issue. Captions tell the story through his Pov throughout and we get an exciting opener where Mr. Pennyworth gets to drive the Batmobile (with Batman himself backseat driving, of course). Writer Scott Snyder nails Alfred’s character here, in both his love for someone he exclusively calls his “son” and “child” through the course of this...

Hello again, and welcome to the recently resurrected Panel Discussions. I’m Kieran, and every week I’m going to go through some of the best comics of the week to give you an idea what you should pick up that you might have missed. This is another stacked week with some fantastic first issues and great jumping on points for books you might be behind on, so let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
The absolute must-buy this week is Rock Candy Mountain #2 by Kyle Starks and Chris Schwiezer. It’s a fantastic Image comic that’s flying under a lot of people’s radars, but this week is a great time to grab both the first and the second issues and explore the world of hobo mythology. The most stunning thing that Rock Candy Mountain accomplishes is that for all of its supernatural aspects and appearances of the actual Devil,...

This review is based off a volume that collects Batgirl #1-6.
For me, the past five or six years of Batgirl comics have been a mixed bag. Don’t get me wrong, I love the character of Barbara Gordon and am not naysaying any creators who’ve worked on the books by any means. It’s just that the tone of each particular run has been undoubtedly polarizing.
I think we can all agree that Gail Simone is a master of her craft, but some felt her New 52 tour of Batgirl went too dark, a product of that era. Personally, I really dug the material she put out. Gotham City is a dark, rough place and I like my comics to reflect that.
But when Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart and Babs Tarr took over, they moved Ms. Gordon to Burnside, a hipster borough, and gave the book a very “young” feel,...

Last week, we brought word that it appeared as though Joker and Riddler would be going head to head in the pages of Batman this June and, thanks to a freshly released batch of solicits, we now know that it’s an absolute certainty. Not only that, but we’ve also learned what’s on the horizon for related books such as All-Star Batman, Batgirl and Super Sons.
First, let’s talk about Batman, since I imagine you’re all anxious to hear about that one. As it turns out, we’re still in the dark when it comes to the wealth of the plot, but seeing as how DC is invoking the holy names of masterworks such as Year One and The Long Halloween, we can only assume that rumors saying the upcoming...

Women are sinking their teeth ever deeper into horror. We chart their rise and talk to directors Ana Lily Amirpour, Julia Ducournau and Karyn Kusama
There’s a moment in French film-maker Julia Ducournau’s prize-winning feature debut Raw in which a young vegetarian (ethereally played by Garance Marillier) finds herself unexpectedly ravenous at the sight of a severed finger. It’s a deliciously horrifying vignette, squirm-inducingly squishy, yet somehow bizarrely sensual. Like Claire Denis’s controversial 2001 shocker Trouble Every Day, Raw takes an intimate approach to the taboo subject of cannibalism, sinking its teeth into the sins of the flesh. As all great horror films should, it touches a nerve – simultaneously repelling and seducing its audience, sucking us in and spitting us out.
For horror fans, Raw is the latest in an encouraging wave of genre-bending movies which have twisted familiar tropes to new and unsettling ends. At the...

Since January has given us an extra week, we decided to do a special Kickstarter episode! Sometimes there are amazing comic book creators who’s fantastic ideas could use a bit of help from fans in order to get us a finished book. We are featuring two great writers who are starting Kickstarter campaigns to promote their titles. From the LRMOnline family we have Kat Kalamia and Omar Morales writer for “Cruzader: Agent of the Vatican” and Guinness World Record holder for the largest comic book published. Kat is promoting her title “Life Father, Like Daughter” and Omar talks about the “Not Forgotten” anthology he is working on. We then venture into our Top 5 independent comics and finish off with the books for the week!

With a loaded title like that, I guess I just need to cut to the chase. Ok, so here it is. I don’t like zombies. The genre doesn’t do it for me. Seeing the struggle of humans retaining their humanity is always a good read but fighting brainless zombies is just boring. The last (and probably only) zombie movie I really liked was Shaun of the Dead and that’s only because I liked how they spoofed on zombies while keeping the essence of the genre.
So why am I taking the time to sorta bash on a beloved genre? Well, Halloween is right around the corner and I’m feeling topical. Let’s give Halloween its time to shine, especially since Christmas decorations are already in malls.
Ok, that’s not the only reason. Everyone is making a big deal about The Walking Dead premiere as well...

We look back - with spoilers - at the incredible ending to the film of Stephen King's The Mist...
Unsurprisingly, this article contains spoilers for 2007’s The Mist. This is a deliberately big spoiler warning, for a film you really don't want spoiled. Really.
Stephen King is a man of many collaborations. We suspect you don't need us to tell you that, as they span many mediums and have borne more sweet-tasting, fleshy morsels than the Man from Del Monte would know what to do with.
Without even mentioning his many silver screen collaborative efforts, there’s American Vampire, the excellent comic book series he has co-written with the wildly-talented Scott Snyder; Ghost Brothers Of Darkland County, a musical created in cahoots with T Bone Burnett (creator of that theme tune for True Detective amongst many, many other things). If we’re talking straight up words on...

Wytches is ominous, atmospheric and outright disturbing. Scott Snyder is no stranger to tackling the downright, in your face, realm of horror. His work on multiple titles that fully embrace the horror genre or just feature elements from it are stellar. Severed from Image featured an array of images that were sure to crawl into your dreams/nightmares at night thanks to Scott Tuft and Attila Futaki’s illustrations, American Vampire continues to impress at presenting an alternative and fresh take on vampires due in thanks as well to Rafael Alburquerque’s stunning art, and Batman even ventures into the realm of the unsettling and horrific. Wytches takes what has worked so well on Snyder’s other projects by taking a beaten down genre and presenting a unique, twisted and ultimately fresh vision with an excellent show of talent from everyone on board.

Before grindhouse director Bob Kelljan turned exclusively to television by the late 1970s, he had accidentally carved out a small triptych of derivative American vampire flicks, beginning with his first solo effort, 1970’s Count Yorga, Vampire. The actor turned director initially starred in his first co-directed effort, the incest drama Flesh of My Flesh (1969), but the success of his Dracula rip-off would carry on to a 1971 sequel before assuming duties for the Blaxploitation sequel Scream Blacula Scream (1973). Initially conceived as a soft-core porno, Kelljan eventually crafted this into a sort of Bram Stoker parody, although not everyone involved in the production seemed to be aware of this.

The thing to remember about Scott Snyder is that he is not a superhero writer. For all of the Batman comics that he writes, he’s a horror writer, applying his trade more obviously to Wytches and American Vampire. Those titles are built on their dark mood and atmosphere. Rafael Albuquerque and Jock are two artists that Snyder has repeatedly worked with who can illuminate the darkness of the world. Snyder does that with his writing as well. American Vampire has been a secret history of the United States, revealing an unseen horrific presence behind familiar events and places. Wytches does something similar but on a much smaller and more personal level. While Snyder has also tried to do the of superhero story in Superman Unchained, a fine but underwhelming miniseries with Jim Lee, his natural element is horror.

Kurt Busiek is probably one of the biggest name in American comics. He started off doing freelance work for both DC and Marvel on titles like Iron Man, Avengers, and The Untold Tales of Spider-Man. In 1993, Busiek joined with superstar artist Alex Ross co-created the classic Marvels mini-series that showed the major events of the Marvel Universe from the perspective of photojournalist Phil Sheldon. From there, he created the long-running, award-winning Astro City series. Kurt Busiek is most notable for his humane approach to superheroes, making characters feel relatable despite their fantastical powers. In November 2014, Busiek teamed up rising art star Benjamin Dewey for The Autumnlands, a futuristic fantasy series about a world ruled by magic-using animal people that summon a human super soldier from the past to save the disappearing magic. However get more than they were bargaining for. The series is published by Image comics, and after a...

Now that comic book scribe Mark Millar can claim responsibility for the glittering success of both the Kick-Ass series and Kingsman: The Secret Service – itself on the path to becoming a franchise – you can understand the writer taking a break from the movie scene. How and ever, not one to rest on his laurels, Millar has teed up another comic-to-film property in Huck, and now the talent has vouched for Channing Tatum to land the title role.
Created alongside artist Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire), Huck is a 6-issue miniseries that recently stumbled onto a path to the silver screen when Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8 picked up the rights earlier this month. While it’s still incubating in the early stages, Millar believes Tatum would make a perfect fit for the “Forest Gump/Captain America” style of character – a decision swayed by the Jump Street actor rushing to Stan Lee...

Huck, an Image Comics series starting on Nov. 18, is very different in tone compared to much of their past work, but that just means more excitement for writer Mark Millar and artist Rafael Albuquerque.
“I like doing different things,” said Millar via Skype interview today. “In the past two, three years I have tried to mix things up.”
Many know Millar for darker stories he has come up with, like those in the controversial Kick-Ass comics, but this upcoming comic follows the titular Huck, a genuine and kind man reminiscent of the biblically-based “Good Samaritan” archetype. The character was raised from birth to do a good deed every day, and that is exactly what he does as a grown man for the ordinary folks of his neighborhood.
During some charity work he participated in last year, Millar met an elderly man visiting on a vacation for two weeks who heavily inspired the character of Huck,...

This year, I will be attending my first ever New York Comic Con with a press pass from Popoptiq.com. I am very excited and a little nervous about getting the chance to rub shoulders with 150,000+ comics, sci-fi, fantasy, anime, and video game fans. (Sorry if I forgot your specific niche.) This year, New York Comic Con is really bringing their A-game as far as panels, guests, and even afterparty opportunities. This year’s guests range from Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto to the casts and writers of upcoming genre TV shows like Sword of Shannara, Ash vs. the Evil Dead, and Legends of Tomorrow and of course, a stacked comics creator lineup from living legends like Chris Claremont and Brian K. Vaughan and relatively new stars like Batgirl artist Babs Tarr and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and Jughead artist Erica Henderson.

Scott Snyder has had one of the faster rises to fame in recent comics history, and he shows no sign of slowing down. He only started writing in the medium in 2009, after a few years of publishing prose fiction, and is now one of its biggest stars: He’s been writing Batman since 2011 and regularly topping sales charts with it; he’s won the industry’s top awards for his series American Vampire; and he’s garnered massive acclaim for everything from superhero titles like Superman Unchained to sci-fi thrillers like The Wake. But he’s never done anything quite like Wytches. Wytches is a creator-owned horror series Snyder began alongside the mononymous artist Jock last year for indie publisher Image Comics, and its first volume comes out in a collected edition this week. It follows the travails of the Rooks, a family struggling with alcohol abuse, disability, and — in...

In years past on Daily Dead, I’ve gone back and forth on whether we should run an end of the year list. There are always movies that I recognize are really well made, but I didn’t like and is it even fair to run a “Best” list when there’s the odd movie that I didn’t get a chance to see? It was enough to drive me insane and so I decided to do something a bit different in 2013. This year, we return with our “Favorites of the Year” lists and the difference here is that we’re not just highlighting movies. Instead, we’re sharing our favorite genre experiences of the year with our readers, which could be a favorite movie, collectible, event, or person. Check back every day this week to find out what made the cut for the rest of the Daily Dead team.

2014 has been a landmark year for comic book movies. Not only did we get two of Marvel's best-ever films (Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier), but the major studios announced enough future superhero adaptations to take us all the way up to 2019.
It's been a pretty landmark year for comic books too. It feels as though more genuinely exciting new titles launched in 2014 than in the past ten years combined, with DC, Marvel and especially Image taking big risks and creating some seriously compelling comics in the process.
We've picked out our 14 favourite comics from this year in terms of big-screen potential:

Some of the best Batman stories are where a villain (usually someone like Scarecrow or Dr. Destiny) gets in his head, warps his sense of reality, and shows he’s not a mythic force of justice, but just a kid who misses his parents. Usually, by the end of the issue or episode, he has overcome his fear and deep-seated psychological problems and roars something like the classic Batman: The Animated Series line, “I am the night. I am vengeance. I am Batman.” This definitely doesn’t happen in Batman #37 as Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo continue to subvert everything which makes up the character of Batman, including his detective skills, contingency plans,...

When you think of spooky places this time of year, perhaps images of Haddonfield, Camp Crystal Lake, and The Further dance in your head. But this Halloween, DC is taking readers on a new tour of terror with a batch of horror-themed comics. Tiptoe through a creepy campus, lose your mind in the insane asylum, grab a seat at the Joker’s dinner table, and crawl through haunted mines where bats hungrily eye your neck.
Explore the creepy campus…
Gotham Academy #1:
“Welcome To Gotham Academy! Gotham City’s most prestigious prep school is a very weird place. It’s got a spooky campus, oddball teachers, and rich benefactors always dropping by…like that weirdo Bruce Wayne. But nothing is as strange is the students!
Like, what’s up with Olive Silverlock? Is she crazy or what? Where did she go last summer? And what’s the deal with her creepy mom?...

Neil Gaiman has seemingly hinted that a "slate" of Vertigo comic book films are in the works.
The writer assured a fan on Tumblr that the adaptation of his classic series The Sandman is still in the works.
The movie was not listed as part of Warner Bros' recently unveiled DC Comics film schedule.
"It's not a DC Comics film," said Gaiman. "It's a Vertigo film.
"That's a different slate of films, and a different announcement."
Vertigo is the creator-owned imprint of DC Comics, and the home of popular series including American Vampire, Fables, Hellblazer, Transmetropolitan, The Unwritten and Y: The Last Man.
A television series based on Sandman spinoff Lucifer is in the works.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in line to produce and direct The Sandman.

Departure Day: When it comes to TV, is closure important?
If you happen to follow a decent number of TV critics on Twitter, you may have noticed a minor eruption of late. A schism has emerged, prompted by accounts like The Cancellation Bear, which concerns itself solely with the topic of whether or not series are likely to survive based on current ratings patterns. That may sound perfectly innocent on its own, but quite a few admirers have expressed the notion that they refuse to dive into a series if they get the sense that it will come to a premature end, thereby robbing them of closure. This idea has, naturally, left many critics incensed: isn’t TV a medium founded on chaos, on the thrill of working within limitations and at the whims of fickle audiences? Moreover, isn’t it silly to always want tidy resolution in the context...

Wytches #1
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Jock
Publisher: Image Comics
Of the many comics set to make their debut this year, few are as hotly anticipated as Wytches. As Hollywood continues to hoard the comic book industry for inspiration, Image Comics’ newest horror series from writer Scott Snyder (American Vampire) and artist Jock (Batman: The Black Mirror) has been optioned by New Regency, with Plan B set to produce a feature film adaptation – and that’s only after one issue has hit the shelves. Yes it is that good! Snyder and Jock breathe new life into the horror mythos – from the first two pages which consists solely of the definition of the word “witch” written in a gothic font, to fiery finish, Wytches is a stylish, compelling, phantasmagoric new series that will leave you both bewildered and eager for more. Snyder and Jock manage to create a visceral experience with a...

Exclusive: Hot off its debut at New York Comic-Con, the comic book series Wytches has been acquired by New Regency for Plan B to produce. The series is written by bestselling and Eisner Award-winning author Scott Snyder and illustrated by award-winning artist Jock. Snyder and Jock will be executive producers on the feature film adaptation.
Unveiled this week at Comic-Con, Wytches follows Charles Rooks, a loving father who moves his family to a neighboring town in an attempt to help their teenage daughter Sailor recover from a disturbing run-in with a bully. She remains haunted by the traumatic incident, unsure of what actually occurred in the woods and unable to escape a darkness growing around her. When Sailor begins to see familiar shadowed figures, Charles must help his daughter survive a terrifyingly real and mythic presence rooted within the woods and the surrounding local towns.

Halloween looms ever closer, my fiends. Can you taste it? Smell it? Hear it?
Find quiet. Settle your thoughts. Be still.
Alone. Look out your window into the night.
It’s there. Just out of sight. It’s waiting for you to leave your car, or your home, or your job. It waits in the places between.
Halloween wants you.
Wants to be you.
You think you wear it, like a mask, but the truth? It’s you that’s being worn.
It draws near…

Me and writer Scott Snyder have a history. In 2011 I was introduced to his work via Severed, his debut at Image Comics. Up until that point, he’d been known mostly for working with DC/Vertigo, as a Batman writer or on a Stephen King-headed series, American Vampire, neither of which interested me.

Horror cinema has a long tradition of creating iconic characters and none more so than those borne in the early days of the genre: characters such as Frankenstein’s monster, the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and, of course, Dracula – the king of horror. A character who, despite his many cinematic deaths, always returns to the silver screen for one more bite of flesh… As he does this week in Dracula Untold, which features Luke Evans as the evil Vlad Tepes.
With that in mind we thought we’d rundown the ten best unforgettable Dracula performances in cinema. Check them out below and let us know in the comments if you agree or disagree!

A report has sprung out by the New York Daily News that Wesley Snipes will reprise his role as the Daywalker, Blade. It is said that he is going to get paid 3 million dollars plus a cut of the profits. Now, this report isn't confirmed by any of marvel sources, so it's best that we take it with a grain of salt. We also noted that Marvel Studios has gotten the rights back to Blade since there wasn't a film made in that long period of time, so at this point anything's possible. With that said this report should be taking slowly and if it does come to be true, it'll be great seeing Wesley suiting back up for Blade! Sound off below with your thoughts! Blade is a 1998 American vampire-superhero-vigilante action film starring Wesley Snipes and Stephen Dorff, loosely based on the Marvel Comics character Blade. Snipes plays...

At Image Expo, the critically acclaimed company announced a monster pairing between Scott Snyder (Batman, American Vampire) and Jock (The Losers). We are only two months away from the debut issue of their title Wytches and this is not something you’re going to want to miss out on.
Scott Snyder is easily one of the best writers in comics right now (seriously, do yourself a favor and read The Wake) and Jock is a superstar artist.

One of my favorite interviews during Comic-Con 2014 was catching up with Scott Snyder to discuss his run on Batman, especially the horror elements he’s brought to the series. While I conducted the interview for our upcoming first issue of Deadly – Horror & Sci-Fi Magazine, I wanted to give our readers a little sample, where Scott Snyder talks about Zero Year and teases what’s ahead for the Dark Knight:
Congratulations on the completion of Zero Year. I really enjoyed your update to Batman’s origin, especially how you were able to bring in The Joker and reinvent Doctor Death.
Scott Snyder: It means a lot. I barely made it out of that one alive. It meant so much to us and it was so harrowing to do the origin. I was so scared when I started it, but it’s the thing I’m proudest of that I’ve done on Batman.

I've been an advocate of Scott Snyder's American Vampire series since the first time I laid eyes on it. How could any fan of bloodsuckers not be? Instead of the usual pretty-boy tripe we're used to being served these days, the fanged ones found in the pages of Vertigo's complex, genre-defying, and generation-spanning comic series are scary and vicious. Unlike Twilight, nobody sees one of the undead creatures within these pages and wants to be one.
Scott Snyder returns to the horror world he helped create with American Vampire: Second Cycle Issue #1. It's the 1960s, and vampires Skinner Sweet and Pearl Jones have moved in separate directions. Skinner passes his time in Mexico doing his own thing. Pearl is busy trying to save vampire souls who want to live undisturbed and invisible among the humans. Can the two remain apart when a new evil rears its head in...

It’s been too long, far too long, since we last delved deep into the world of American Vampire. We’ve been placated, sure. The excellent compilation volume, The American Vampire Anthology, was a perfectly terrific stopgap, with a wraparound story catching us up on what’s happening with badass vampire Skinner Sweet. But since writer Scott Snyder and artist Rafael Albuquerque’s long hiatus from the title (since January of 2013!), readers have been desperate to dive back fully into the dual histories of Sweet and Pearl Jones, American vampires. Finally, with this month’s Second Cycle, the time has come. That time is now 1965, firmly in the second half of the twentieth century. Pearl Jones is passing as a descendent of herself, planted on her family farm somewhere in rural Kansas. She’s got a secret there that speaks to the almost hippie-esque ethos of the time. It’s...

American Vampire Second Cycle #1 (Vertigo): Welcome back, American Vampire. You haven’t changed a bit. We still get Scott Snyder’s brilliant, no-holds-barred depiction of Skinner Sweet, now in Juarez holding up people at a crossroads, and the icily elegant Pearl, who has begun a project on vampire heritage and takes in fanged children like the director of a Transylvanian orphanage. But someone called the Grey Trader has entered the picture, and his presence actually puts fear on Skinner’s face, which is so wrong it’s horrifying. Rafael Albuquerque’s art continues to kill, offering stylized faces and dark, inky shadows while Dave McCaig’s colors give everything a distinctly Western vibe. There’s also a shoutout to the “Scott Snyder hates horses” joke, which caps off a scene that would be dreadful if the joke’s existence weren’t so damned amusing. 8/10

American Vampire Second Cycle #1 (Vertigo): Welcome back, American Vampire. You haven’t changed a bit. Now that the big-screen version of Veronica Mars has finally come out, it has turned out to be breezy, pulpy, enjoyable, disposable entertainment (Veronica attempts to solve the murder of a famous rock star in Amy Winehouse makeup…whom she happened to go to high school with!). And now that the film has proved, for the first time, that a movie funded by crowdsourcing (in this case, via Kickstarter) can readily make its money back — and perhaps even do better than that — one could, I suppose, choose to be cynical by viewing the entire phemonenon of the Veronica Mars movie...

In comics news this week, Mark Doyle has been appointed the new Batman Group Editor at DC Comics, replacing Mike Marts. Marts has gone to work for Marvel as a result of DC’s announcement that they will be moving its New York office to Burbank, California in 2015. Doyle is currently a Vertigo editor who was most responsible for bringing Scott Snyder into DC after editing his American Vampire series, and also edits Snyder’s other Vertigo series, The Wake. Though Doyle is excited about the promotion, he will only be the editor for a year as he will not be moving to California in 2015.
Snyder is also pleased with the appointment, tweeting that “Gotham couldn’t be in better hands for Batman’s 75th”, referring to 2014 being Batman’s 75th anniversary since he first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in 1939.
