Tommy Chong has his cellphone pressed up tight against his ear, trying to find out where the person on the other end of the line is; at 85, his hearing isn’t what it used to be. Sitting across from him in the booth of a restaurant, located right off the lobby of an extremely busy hotel in downtown Austin, Texas, is Richard Marin. The 77-year-old actor is usually known by his nickname, “Cheech,” and he’s perusing the menu while his longtime partner loudly issues directions regarding where to meet up later.

Cheech and Chong persist in the popular culture mainly as a metonym for stoner humor, but as any comedy fan knows, even the dumbest jokes — the one’s that can only be enjoyed while baked — don’t just appear out of smoke-filled air. “Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie,” a new documentary chronicling the eponymous duo’s meteoric rise in the 1970s, emphasizes the sheer amount of work and determination it took to become one of America’s most popular comedy acts. Long before Seth Rogen was born, Cheech and Chong were the hardest-working potheads in Hollywood, even if they played exaggerated burnouts on screen and stage.
Alas, every success story comes with its fair share of complications. “Last Movie” also explores the financial headaches and managerial difficulties Cheech and Chong weathered at the height of their success, as well as the creative differences that ultimately drove the two men apart.

Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong first established their "wastoid" characters while working together in a Canadian improv troupe in the late 1960s. They first found success performing as "Cheech & Chong" as the opener for a touring bad. The story goes that Cheech & Chong were so funny, the band never came on stage. They began releasing their best bits on comedy albums starting with 1971's "Cheech and Chong," a must-have for comedy record collectors. Their bits were played by hip DJs, and they appeared regularly on "The Dr. Demento Show."
Their success was helped by a growing drug culture in the early 1970s. Cheech & Chong were stoners through and through, and their jokes hit harder for those who were under the influence. Those who are inexperienced with marijuana may not find Cheech & Chong terribly funny. The stoner shtick has continued to the present day, and now Marin and Chong have...

“Cheech and I were on the Paramount lot after we’d done the movie, and we’re kind of trying to figure out what we were going to do next— how we were going to get another movie going,” remembers Tommy Chong of the weeks following the 1978 release of Up in Smoke, the first film from him and comedy partner Cheech Marin. “And Warren Beatty, pulls up in his convertible. He took off his sunglasses and looked at us and he goes, ‘You guys have no idea what you’ve done.’ And we looked at each other like thinking, ‘Oh, what did we do?’ What we did was we pulled a movie out of thin air.”
Up in Smoke, which was made independently by principals with no filmmaking experience, grossed over $100 million at the box office, simultaneously launching and proving the commercial value of the genre, all in one go.

Ah, 1978. It was the year that Slashfilm writer Lee Adams entered the world, and two movies changed the course of comedy forever (those landmarks are unrelated; I'm not trying to claim any credit). Those movies were "National Lampoon's Animal House" and Cheech and Chong's "Up in Smoke" — two lowbrow hits whose influences are still felt to this day.
There was lowbrow stuff before 1978, of course. Slapstick — the age-old art of falling over, breaking things, and hitting people — was still doing the rounds in the increasingly weary adventures of Inspector Clouseau. But the class of '78 was different: wild, irreverent, raucous, bawdy, subversive, counterculture comedy that delighted the kids and antagonized the squares.
The two films had their roots in the '60s. Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong developed their stand-up act in the latter part of the decade before making their break on the big screen with the granddaddy of stoner movies,...

Stoners and comedy fans everywhere have reason to rejoice: a Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong biopic is on the way.
Written by Danya Jiminez and Hannah McMechan (who both wrote for Comedy Central’s 2020 reboot of The Ren & Stimpy Show) and directed by Kristian Mercado, the film will follow the comedic duo’s origins through a “never-before-seen” lens, showing their rise from obscurity to stardom. The release date of the film is still unknown, but many feel it’s high time the duo gets their due big-screen recognition.
“We are excited to show the world how two dudes from completely different backgrounds got together, changed comedy, and made cannabis mainstream!” Cheech and Chong said in a joint statement (pun intended).
Both Marin and Chong will have executive producer credits on the project. The beloved cult-icons partnered with Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures after the production company acquired the rights to the yet-to-be-named flick.

Hey, Dave’s not here, man.
Who is here, though, is Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures as he partners with Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, and Underground as well as Five All in the Fifth Entertainment for a planned biopic of the comedy team, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cheech and Chong are the comic duo who brought the stoners to the mainstream with their 1978 movie, Up in Smoke. They gained popularity with their uncensored and counterculture comedy and followed that movie with Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie in 1980 and Nice Dreams in 1981.
The biopic is set to have Kristian Mercado at the helm as director. Mercado is no stranger to making comedies, having directed specials for comedians Michael Che, Hannibal Burress, Ilana Glazer, and more. He recently made his feature film debut with his film If You Were Last, starring Anthony Mackie and Missi Pyle, which screened at SXSW this year.

The origin story of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, the pioneering comedians whose 1978 film Up in Smoke has transcended cult status, is getting its own big screen treatment.
Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures is partnering with Marin and Chong, Underground, and Five All in the Fifth Entertainment on a feature biopic about the comedy duo.
Cheech and Chong came to prominence in the ’70s and ’80s, becoming synonymous with stoner culture by riffing on and lifting up the counterculture of the time, from hippies to (of course) cannabis. Their combined output included successful stand-up shows, comedy albums, and low-budget feature films, including Up in Smoke, Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie (1980) and Nice Dreams (1981).
Kristian Mercado, who most recently made his feature debut with the 2023 South by Southwest entry If You Were Last, will direct from a screenplay by Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan.

Note: This article contains spoilers for “Stranger Things” Season 4 Part 1.
“Stranger Things” is a product of all of the TV and films creators and executive producers Matt and Ross Duffer, aka the Duffer Brothers, grew up consuming. As a sci-fi time capsule of the ‘80s, it’s teeming with myriad references to adventure and coming-of-age classics, with inspirations ranging from “The Goonies” to the short-lived cult show “Freaks and Geeks.”
From Steven Spielberg to Stephen King, from “Stand by Me” to “Carrie,” Netflix’s tentpole phenomenon is a mix of old and new, bringing younger generations to long-hailed classics and offering nostalgia-tinged action with a revamped twist (and sans a heavy hand). Some references are fleeting, while others inform the obvious look, feel and tone of the characters or plot.

Hollywood sometimes deserves credit for being at the forefront of social issues. You wouldn't necessarily think of a "stoner comedy" as a particularly "progressive" genre, but some of the wackiest weed-related films were actually important moments in representation. The 1978 romp "Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke" wasn't only the first modern stoner movie, but a film with two Mexican leads in an era of extreme discrimination. Decades later, the "Harold and Kumar" series had a similar impact with its Asian characters.
Stoners are often used as comedic side characters. Would "The Cabin in the Woods" be nearly as funny without Fran Kranz's "fool" Marty Mikalaski? Now...

Hollywood and marijuana long have been inextricably linked, from Cheech & Chong establishing the stoner comedy genre with 1978’s Up in Smoke to beloved weed-based hits like The Big Lebowski, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and Pineapple Express. In recent years, though, Hollywood’s involvement with marijuana has transitioned offscreen and into business, with celebrities launching their own cannabis lines and companies. Seth Rogen, Jay-Z, Jim Belushi, Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson, Wiz Khalifa, Bella Thorne, Jaleel White and Melissa Etheridge are just a sampling of the famous figures who have gotten into the cannabis industry since 2012, when Washington and Colorado became the first states to legalize recreational use....

Smoking more now but getting high less? The iconic comedy duo Cheech and Chong have always had a solution. The very names Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin are synonymous with weed culture. When The Simpsons ran an episode on dispensaries being legalized in Springfield, they referred to stoners as “Cheech and Chongs.” The pair won’t be selling out of the back of an ice cream truck, like they did in Nice Dreams. Cheech & Chong are doing it legal. They even got a license.
Together with Five Point Holdings, they will license the Cheech & Chong Brand to open dispensaries. Right now they’re going for licenses in California, Nevada, Arizona, Illinois and Washington. The dispensaries will feature cannabis products from both Tommy Chong’s Cannabis and Cheech’s Stash brands. The outlets will also be the first place to purchase Cheech and Chong clothing and memorabilia.
The duo goes back to the late 1960s.

How does half of stoner duo Cheech and Chong cope with coronavirus lockdown? Fine – thanks to drugs, his wife and the experience of nine months in prison for selling bong pipes
Tommy Chong has got the munchies. It’s early afternoon in locked-down La, and last night he was on the pot cookies. “My wife, Shelby, just made a whole batch of them – oatmeal and maple syrup.” He stops to correct himself. “I put the pot in there, and of course I put too much in. Last night it got me almost comatose. Shelby got kinda mad at me. You know like when a kid gets so stoned all you do is sit there and grin.” Chong is 82 next month.
He sounds about four decades younger – his voice is deep, sexy, pulsing with life. Chong is one half of the most famous stoner comic partnership in history, Cheech and Chong.

Netflix has confirmed that 58 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in April. Leading off the lineup are season 2 of the Ricky Gervais serio-comic series “After Life” and the debut of Mindy Kaling‘s childhood memoir “Never Have I Ever.” And in these trying times, take comfort in the slew of comedy specials, including one pairing “Silicon Valley” leading man Thomas Middleditch and “Parks and Recreation” scene stealer Ben Schwartz.
On the reality side, we can’t wait to gobble up season 4 of the baking show “Nailed It!” and delight in the debut of the dating series “Too Hot to Handle.”
Netflix is a global presence and it brings many of its international hits to American screens this month, including new seasons of Israel’s spy thriller “Fauda,” Spain’s crime drama “Money Heist” and England’s sport docuseries “Sunderland ’Til I Die.

Chicago – One of the great movie character actors is hale and hearty at age 85. Tom Skerritt has over 50 years of roles, and has appeared in such film classics as “M*A*S*H,” “Harold and Maude,” “Up in Smoke,” “Top Gun” and “Steel Magnolias.” Skerritt was at the 7th Chicago Critics Film Festival for the 40th Anniversary of “Alien.”
Thomas Roy Skerritt was born in Detroit, and after the Air Force and college developed a fascination for acting. He made his film debut in “War Hunt” (1962), which was also the debut for Robert Redford, who would later direct Skerritt in “A River Runs Through It” (1992). He spent most of the 1960s doing episodic TV, and began to get film notice around the time of “M*A*S*H” (1970), where he portrayed a southern doctor named Duke, as well as a small-but-crucial appearance in “Harold and Maude” (1971).

Okay, so here’s the thing. This month I wanted to find a good deep cut from the great Tom Atkins, whose charm and mustache thrilled us throughout the ’80s, even as he played a lecherous doctor, a kinda lecherous resident of a quaint seaside town, and a caustic cop haunted by his past (who I assume was also a lech). So when I dove into his filmography in search of a lesser-known vehicle, I perked up when I found the 1980 psychological drama The Ninth Configuration.
Alas, after watching the film, it turns out that Atkins has a relatively minor role, but there’s no way I could skip this movie, as it features a Murderers’ Row of horror character actor royalty. And so I figured, since baseball season did just start...*Puts on best Bob Uecker voice from Major League.*

One of the first seven women to come forward and accuse Bill Cosby of rape, actress, television personality and producer Louisa Moritz has died of natural causes in Los Angeles. She was 72.
Moritz was born Louisa Castro in 1946 in Havana, Cuba. After moving to America in the 1950s, she saw the St. Moritz hotel in New York City and changed her name to Louisa Moritz. From there, she began her acting career with commercials in the 1960s, going on to star in over 100 commercials on television.
Her film debut came in 1970 with lead role of Carmela in “The Man from O.R.G.Y.” Though she is perhaps best known for her role as Rose the hooker in the Oscar-winning “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” other memorable roles include starring alongside Sylvester Stallone as Myra in “Death Race 2000,” Flora in “Sickpack Annie” and Officer Gloria Whitey in...

Louisa Moritz, an actress who appeared in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and brought a good-natured joy to a stereotypical blonde bombshell persona in early ’70s fare like Love, American Style and Match Game but in more recent years joined other women in accusing Bill Cosby of sexual assault, has died from a longstanding heart ailment, her longtime friend and publicist Edward Lozzi announced.
Moritz was 72 and died at her home last week in Los Angeles of natural causes.
In Cuckoo’s Nest, Moritz played Rose, a small but pivotal performance in which her good-time pal of Jack Nicholson’s R.P. McMurphy sneaks into the mental hospital for the against-the-rules party that leads to tragedy. In one memorable moment, she slow-dances sweetly with Danny Devito’s childlike Martini, his head resting upon her breast.

Tommy Chong dropped by TheWrap Studios to discuss 40th anniversary of the stoner comedy cult classic “Up in Smoke” and proved that stoners don’t forget everything.

Bill Cosby has been publicly accused of raping, drugging, coercing or sexually assaulting as many as 60 women in all since 1965. Many of the accusations only started to emerge in October 2014.
The 80-year-old comedian was found guilty by a jury in his retrial over accusations made by former Temple University employee Andrea Constand. Cosby was re-tried in a Pennsylvania court on three counts of aggravated indecent assault, stemming from Constand’s accusation that the comedian drugged and molested her in 2004 at his home outside of Philadelphia. The jury found him guilty in a unanimous vote on all three counts.

When Cheech Marin was promoting 1987’s “Born in East L.A.,” his first without Tommy Chong, he invited a critic to watch the film and to interview him. But Marin said the reaction he got from the journalist made his jaw drop.
“He just stared at me. And I said, ‘What’s up, dude?’ And he said, ‘You don’t speak with an accent.” And I go, ‘Am I supposed to?'” Marin told TheWrap.
For much of his career, Marin has had to shake the perception that he is not his stage or screen persona Pedro. And he even fooled a film critic into thinking he was someone other than a performer.

It’s 1978, and Cheech and Chong are rolling down the California highway in their low rider “Love Machine” in a scene from their first movie “Up in Smoke.” But they’re also rolling the biggest joint you will ever see, a mix of Maui Waui and “Labrador.” Turns out Chong’s dog ate his stash and pooped out what’s left.
“You mean we’re smoking dog s— man,” Cheech’s character Pedro exclaims. “Uhhh, I wonder what Great Dane tastes like, man.”

THR called the comedy starring Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong "the most amusing pot movie since Reefer Madness," while the church said the Paramount release was "morally objectionable in toto" and described Smoke as an "utterly mindless comedy about two California potheads" filled with "witless cliches about the pleasure of the drug culture."

April 20, recognized among marijuana users as the international holiday of 4/20, falls on a Friday this year, which turns out to be the perfect release date for Fox Searchlight’s “Super Troopers 2,” the long awaited sequel to the 2001 stoner-movie classic “Super Troopers.” It will open wide on 2,400 screens.
“Fox Searchlight chose 4/20 as the release date,” director Jay Chandrasekhar says. “It tested better than any of the movies we’ve ever made before. There’s real enthusiasm at Fox over this film.”
That’s not often the case with so-called stoner movies, which have endured waves of acceptance and industry reticence over the years. But now with marijuana legalization in full swing in nine states, including California, have the studios come around to stoking that market again like Cheech & Chong did during the decriminalization wave of the ’70s with “Up in Smoke” and several sequels into the ’80s?

When Eminem dropped "Stan" in 2000 -- the third single off his Diamond-certified Marshall Mathers LP -- no one had any idea that the song would go on to change the world of music and pop culture forever.
The intense track -- a first-person account of an obsessed fan of the rapper's, who emulates his looks and lifestyle in an attempt to impress Em from afar -- plays out in increasingly horrifying installments, as "Stan's" fan letters document his decent into a maniacal infatuation. The new definition was recently added to the Oxford English Dictionary.)
The music video for "Stan" is just as disturbing as the song, following the titular character -- played by actor Devon Sawa -- as he pens increasingly threatening letters to Eminem, neglects his pregnant...

Summer may be over, but it’s not too late to “get away from it all” with another trip….a trip inside your mind. If you’re thinking of “mother’s little helper” then you’re on the right track. Movies about drugs have changed with society over the years. The first flicks were hysterical (in more ways than one) cautionary tales epitomized by the camp classic Reefer Madness. With the counter culture’s rise in the 60’s and 70’s there were more enlightened films like, well Roger Corman’s The Trip. And in the 80’s Cheech and Chong finally took their weed humor...
