It’s official: There will no longer be an all Law & Order Thursday night on NBC. For its fifth season, Law & Order: Organized Crime is moving to the streaming service, Peacock. That breaks it up from airing Thursday nights after Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU, which also means that chances are there won’t be many (if any) crossovers. And of course, that leads to the inevitable question of what that means for the will they/won’t they slow burn of Detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Svu‘s Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay). Organized Crime was created by Dick Wolf, Matt Olmstead, and Ilene Chaiken. It follows the detectives of the Organized Crime Control Bureau as they take on New York City’s most vicious and violent criminal syndicates. It brought Meloni back to the world of Law & Order in 2021, via a two-part crossover with...

Chris Pine said this week the development and release of his directorial debut Poolman was “the best thing to ever happen to me” despite the movie’s nearly universal bad reviews.
“It’s forced me to double down on joy,” Pine told host Josh Horowitz on Thursday’s episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “As an actor… fundamentally it’s about play, right? What we do is essentially become children for hours a day and make believe,” he said, adding: “There’s an impish quality to it that I don’t ever want to lose.”
Poolman, which debuted at Toronto film festival last fall, follows Pine as a down-on-his luck pool technician in Los Angeles who discovers a water heist in a spoof of 1974’s Chinatown. The film was panned by critics, with The Hollywood Reporter writing that the project “goes tonally off the rails from the start and...

The U.S. Supreme Court has endorsed open-ended recovery of damages for copyright infringement, ruling that music producer Sherman Nealy can pursue over a decade’s worth of damages for an unlicensed sample of his work by Flo Rida in his 2008 tune “In the Ayer.”
The finding, in a 6-3 ruling issued on Thursday, could expand the scope of damages in cases in which plaintiffs were previously barred from recovering money for infringement that occurred more than three years before the filing of a lawsuit. In some cases, claimants could potentially get a bigger payout by waiting to sue and letting damages stack rather than trying to stop the alleged infringement as long as they bring a lawsuit within the statute of limitations.

It’s no surprise that this week’s The Hollywood Reporter cover story on Andy Cohen would garner some attention — in it, the Watch What Happens Live host and Bravo producer spoke candidly with co-editor in chief Maer Roshan about the accusations that had been swirling around the Real Housewives franchise, from on-set sexism to racism to alcohol and drug abuse, breaking his long silence about the controversy.
But the part of the interview that would garner the most attention had nothing to do with any of these claims: instead, it was a rather tangential query regarding the longtime friendship between the openly gay Cohen and straight rock star John Mayer, a relationship that has spurred reams of coy stories in both tabloids and the mainstream press.
“Your friendship with Mayer has been the subject of intense speculation,” Roshan noted. “People seem dubious that a straight rock star can have a close,...

Chris Pine earned some of the worst reviews of his career for “Poolman,” a Los Angeles-set comedy mystery in the vein of “Chinatown” that Pine directed, co-wrote and starred in. The movie is Pine’s feature directorial debut, but it got eviscerated by critics when it premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Variety critic Owen Gleiberman called it an “absurdist disaster,” for instance.
Making the press rounds to support the “Poolman” theatrical release, Pine stopped by the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and refused to believe that he made a complete dud of a movie.

First things first: Yes, Francis Galluppi is going to be directing a new movie in the “Evil Dead” franchise. And no, he can’t tell you anything about it. He can, however, prove his bona fides as a horror and suspense fan in our Zoom interview by pointing to the “Evil Dead” poster in his office and the “three Necronomicons on my desk.”
Galluppi landed the coveted gig after Sam Raimi saw Galluppi’s feature film debut, “The Last Stop in Yuma County,” the acclaimed thriller that arrives in theaters and on digital this week. Shot in 20 days on a budget of “about a million” dollars, the film is set almost entirely at road stop diner in an unspecified past era where traveling salesmen and rotary phones are still prevalent. As patrons await the arrival of a gas truck, the establishment soon becomes populated with an ensemble of independent film legends,...

Since Tom Brady’s Netflix roast, viewers have speculated about how much the NFL star truly was upset over Jeff Ross’ joke that alluded to Patriots owner Robert Kraft being charged with soliciting prostitution after an investigation into massage parlors in Florida.
Now, comedian Andrew Schulz, who participated in the roast, is saying that he believes that uncomfortable moment “was 100 percent real.”
“The reason why I think it’s real is because they told us no jokes about happy endings with Bob Kraft,” Schulz said on his Flagrant podcast.
Schulz explained that he had a joke about former Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss receiving a “happy ending” from Kraft. “They were like, ‘Tom asked us not to do anything with the massage shit,'” the comedian recalled. “I was like, ‘Alright, cool. The guy’s coming here for this thing. He’s not getting roasted.'”

Apple is apologizing for an iPad Pro ad that was widely criticized when it debuted earlier this week.
The dystopian spot, titled “Crush,” shows several instruments, including a guitar and piano, being crushed by a hydraulic press. Also among the items being smashed flat are balls that look like emojis and an Angry Birds statue.
“Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world,” Apple marketing vp Tor Myhren said in a statement to Ad Age. “Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry.”

Filmmakers are warning that a recent ruling in a copyright suit against Netflix over its “Tiger King” docuseries could restrict the use of video clips in documentaries, and upset a long-held understanding of what constitutes “fair use.”
The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, based in Denver, ruled in March that the use of a 66-second excerpt from a funeral video was not “transformative” under the Copyright Act. The three-judge panel remanded the case to a lower court to determine if Netflix violated the copyright of Tim Sepi, the videographer who shot the scene.
Netflix has petitioned the court to reconsider its decision, and has been joined by the Motion Picture Association, the International Documentary Association, Film Independent, and a host of media law professors in raising alarms about the potential chilling effect on non-fiction storytelling.

On this season of Apple TV+’s “Loot,” it’s revealed that one of the show’s characters, played by Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, is a secret Taylor Swift fan — and even hides her Swift albums inside record jackets for jazz music. Don’t worry, star Maya Rudolph isn’t as clandestine. “I’ve always admired her,” Rudolph tells Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “This past summer was the summer of the Eras tour and my life will never be the same again. It was incredible.”
Rudolph says Swift’s album “Lover” is her favorite — but then she quickly backtracks. “Now you got me started.

While filming episode one of “Doctor Who” season 14, entitled “Space Babies,” Millie Gibson had to do the impossible: keep the attention of 20 infants at once. Although she was bearing her soul in a speech integral to her character’s backstory, the babies kept dozing off and losing their attention to the flashing lights of the space-age set. So, to keep their little eyes focused on her, she delivered her lines while a nursery rhyme played on her phone just out of camera view.
“It was so hard honestly,” recalled Gibson. “It was the most bizarre thing but it will stay in my mind forever.

Jerry Seinfeld revealed during a recent interview on the “Fly on the Wall” podcast (via People) that he wanted Chris Rock to parody the infamous Oscars slap in his feature directorial debut “Unfrosted,” which recently premiered on Netflix. The issue was that Seinfeld filmed the comedy movie not long after the March 2022 Oscars, and Rock was allegedly feeling too “shook” to be able to perform in the movie.
“The other thing I wanted to do that I almost did was Chris Rock was going to be the emcee of the Bowl & Spoon Awards — and we shot that right after the Will Smith slap,” Seinfeld explained. “I was going to have somebody come up on the stage and have Chris punch ’em out as they got there.”
“Unfrosted” is loosely based on the true story of the creation of Pop-Tarts. Set in 1963, it tracks the rivalry between cereal companies Kellogg’s and...

Prime Video has touted the viewer response to Fallout as its second-biggest series ever worldwide over 16 days of release. In the United States (and over a shorter time period), it’s No. 1.
Fallout recorded 2.9 billion minutes of viewing time in the U.S. over its first five days, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings for April 8-14. That’s far and away the best opening for a series on the Amazon-owned Prime Video, beating Reacher’s series premiere week in early 2022 (1.84 billion minutes) by more than a billion minutes.
The series also had more than double the second-place show on the list for the week: Bluey had 1.39 billion minutes of viewing in the week leading up to and including the release of its special episode “The Sign,” which premiered on April 14.

Cardi B addressed the backlash she has been receiving on social media since the Met Gala on Monday.
During an interview with Emma Chamberlain for Vogue at fashion’s biggest night, the rapper was asked who designed her massive black gown, which took up the entire landing of the carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Sensen Lii for Windowsen spent two months working on the gown, so when she couldn’t remember his name, people felt she was disrespecting the designer.
“I feel amazing,” Cardi said on the Met Gala carpet, before pausing for a moment and adding, “It’s this amazing designer. They’re Asian and everything.”
In response to the backlash, the “Up” artist posted a video on Instagram, per Entertainment Tonight, that has now expired and is circulating on Twitter (formerly X).
“I want to make this very clear, right, first thing’s first,” she began the two-minute-plus video.

After making the leap to narrative filmmaking last year with “Nyad,” Oscar winners Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin have returned to their documentary roots and are currently at work in the edit suite prepping their next doc feature — “Lost in the Amazon” (working title), about how four Indigenous children survived for 40 days in the Amazon jungle after a plane crash in 2023. The story of their disappearance and eventual recovery transfixed the global media.
Vasarhelyi and Chin co-directed and produced the film with Colombian filmmaker Juan Camilo Cruz for National Geographic.

John Malkovich has joined Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four” in an undisclosed role, Variety has confirmed. The veteran actor joins Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Marvel’s First Family, along with Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal, a version of the Silver Surfer, and Paul Walter Hauser.
Malkovich has brought his uniquely off-kilter acting style to bear in a prolific career spanning costume drama (like 1988’s “Dangerous Liasons”), studio thrillers (1993’s “In the Line of Fire”), cutting edge indies (1999’s “Being John Malkovich”), wackadoo sci-fi comedies (2005’s “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”) and animated family films (2014’s “Penguins of Madagascar”). Most recently, he has appeared in the Apple TV+ series “The New Look” and the Netflix series “Ripley.”
