“There will always be war,” intones an authoritative voice at the end of the second trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. “But to get home, Furiosa fought the world.”
A narrator isn’t exactly something new to the world of Mad Max, as the 1981 sequel Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior opens and closes with voiceover, as does 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. But in those cases, the narration served a basic expositional purpose, providing basic information for those who have not seen the previous films — something particularly important for The Road Warrior, as few Americans had the opportunity to watch 1979’s Mad Max.
But as Anya Taylor-Joy steps in for Charlize Theron in Furiosa, the narrator serves a different, more important in-universe purpose.
In a recent interview with EW, Furiosa director George Miller shed some light on this voice from the shadows. “That’s a narrator called the History Man,...

DC Comics will resurrect their 'out-of-continuity', "Elseworlds" concepts, with new titles available in 2024, including "Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age", "Batman the Barbarian", "Green Lantern: Dark" and a whole lot more:
"...'Elseworlds' was established to feature DC characters in settings outside regular comic book continuity, with 'The Batman' movie franchise a prome example if this imaginative shift."
"Out-of-continuity stories have always been a pillar of DC publishing, granting creators the ability to explore all the wild corners of the 'DC Universe'", said DC Editor Ben Abernathy. "We’re excited to bring a whole new slate of titles under the 'Elseworlds' banner in 2024, combining some all-new titles from top storytellers, as well as sequels from the current DC line that fit that same out-of-continuity aesthetic."
Writers and illustrators include Andy Diggle, Leandro Fernandez, Brian Augustyn, Mike Mignola, Greg Smallwood, Jay Kristoff and Tirso Cons.

Stunt coordinators and performers are an essential part of the film industry. Someone has to block, stage, and perform the larger-than-life stunts that make the "movie magic" happen! Computer-generated imagery can't match the authenticity of the real thing. Even if special effects augment a sequence, it helps a scene's believability if it's (at least) partially shot with real stunts.
Lately, there has been an ongoing movement to show appreciation for stunt artists -- like when Helen Mirren told Indiewire that the Academy Awards should honor the craft. Currently, the Oscars don't have a category for best stunts, best stunt coordination, best stunt directing, or best stunt ensemble. Although the Screen Actors Guild Awards have awards in these categories, other televised award shows like the BAFTAs still don't recognize these talented professionals.
Recently, we've seen stunt artists rise within the ranks to become filmmakers for blockbuster-action films. Chad Stahelski, Keanu Reeves' stunt double on "The Matrix,...

Calling all comic book fans: Netflix just dropped what is sure to be your latest obsession. Based on the comic book of the same name, The Old Guard tells the story of four centuries-old immortals secretly working to protect humanity, who - just when they discover another immortal - realize their secret powers have been exposed. The final scene in the movie definitely suggests a potential sequel, but does that mean fans are going to get one? According to The Old Guard creator Greg Rucka and director Gina Prince-Bythewood, there's a good chance we'll get not just one sequel, but two.
In 2017, the first five-issue miniseries of The Old Guard, subtitled Opening Fire, was published, and it wasn't long before fans were hooked. Though Opening Fire (like Netflix's adaptation) works as a standalone narrative, Rucka knew the story wasn't over. He teamed up with artist Leandro Fernandez again for the...

Netflix have been on a decent hot streak when it comes to their original movies, with Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction dominating the online conversation and becoming one of the streaming service’s most-watched titles ever, while Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods was showered with critical acclaim. What would you do if you were immortal? Would you save people and help the impoverished? Or rather use it only for your own selfish needs? Those and many similar questions arise in the minds of audiences while watching The Old Guard. Directed by filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood this sci-fi Netflix film touches on the subject of immortality and the abuse of body autonomy, as well as many other aspects. The Old Guard, adapted from a graphic novel series by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez, captivates audiences with its superb cast and fascinating topic that makes it more mature than other films based on comic books. The director steadily builds up the tension, leading to its satisfying finale. A group of four immortal legionnaires led by Andy (Charlize Theron) travel worldwide and help the weak ones. The rebel group has hiding places all over the world. But when danger hits home,...

Action franchise starters that never started an actual franchise; a conversation I pray The Old Guard never enters. Wanted. The Losers. Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Netflix adaptation of Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez’s immortal warriors comic series deserves better than those one-and-done titles. Battle choreography is energetic, and the hero complex as we know it gets upended with an “unkillable” narrative foil. There’s also essential character work that pushes against every toxic subgenre preconception – or maybe I selfishly want more “Charlize Theron with a battle-axe” content. She’s the mascot 2020 needs, deserves, and should support.
Theron stars as Andromache of Scythia, aka “Andy,” the leader of an elite squadron of soldiers who (mostly) cannot die. “The Old Guard,” which premieres on Netflix on July 10, is a formidable hybrid. It’s based on a comic book series by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez about a group of immortal warriors who have been spent centuries quietly dueling the worst people they can find on the planet, but for much of its two-hour running time it focuses not on the battles but on their melancholic aftermaths. It gives Charlize Theron another chance to kick serious butt, which we know she does very, very well, but what you might take away from her performance isn’t her...

Being a superhero isn’t an easy gig, an idea that has inspired recent cinematic explorations ranging from the sublime (“Logan”) to the ridiculous (Tobey Maguire going goth in “Spider-Man 3”). That same concept also drives Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Old Guard,” a Netflix-produced take on Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez’s 2017 comic book miniseries of the same name, but her version is as fresh as any comic book movie made since superhero mania swept the multiplex.
Even the film’s own star Charlize Theron previously interrogated the weirdly relatable theme that being a superhero can be a real slog in Peter Berg’s “Hancock.” Here, she’s the oldest member of the Old Guard, kick-ass mercenaries who happen to be a) very old and b) mostly immortal. And as the film opens, she finds herself again pondering the value of fighting the seemingly same battles on an unending timeline.

In something you would’ve never believed just six months ago, 2020 has seen a fairly big drought of superhero movies, with only Birds of Prey and Bloodshot squeaking into theaters before the coronavirus pandemic messed everything up. Welcome to another installment of Weekly Picks where I take a look at the comics I am most excited about for this upcoming New Comic Book Day. Keep in mind I have yet to read these books so this is based solely on expectations. Sometimes expectations can get the best of us so I try to even it out by also pointing out what could also go wrong.
American Carnage #8 Writer: Bryan Edward Hill | Artist: Leandro Fernandez | Publisher: Vertigo Comics
Solicitation: Bullets fly and blood flows when Richard’s plan to exfiltrate one of Jennifer’s childhood friends from the white nationalist narcotics business goes awry. Meanwhile, Sheila’s new FBI overlord makes his move as DC Vertigo’s acclaimed Los Angeles crime saga continues in this stunning issue.
Why I am Excited: If I was to pick the best comic of 2019 so far American Carnage would probably be the book I would choose.

These preview pages from American Carnage #4 shows that Hill & Fernandez's American Carnage feels like the best of mid-period Vertigo.
American Carnage is a revelation. Bryan Edward Hill, a rising star at DC who won praise for his work on The Wild Storm: Michael Cray and Detective Comics has a straight up throwback Vertigo book here with art partner Leandro Fernandez.
In my mind, there are two main periods of Vertigo comics. There's launch era Vertigo - British Invasion comics like Sandman, Invisibles, or Hellblazer - the weird urban fantasy from the British titans of comics like Gaiman, Ennis, Morrison, or Delano. And then there's mid-period Vertigo, when they moved away from the Swamp Things of the world and onto immersive crime slice of life stuff like 100 Bullets and Scalped. In many ways, American Carnage feels so much like 100 Bullets that I think Hill and Fernandez's comic gets...
