Singer-songwriter Ani Difranco will make her Broadway debut as ‘Persephone’ in the hit musical Hadestown, performing the role she originated on the 2010 studio-concept album by composer Anaïs Mitchell.
Difranco will begin performances at the Walter Kerr Theatre on February 9, 2024. The announcement was made today by producers Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy.
Difranco’s history with Hadestown began when she invited Mitchell to release the original studio album of Hadestown on Difranco’s label Righteous Babe Records. Difranco originated the role of ‘Persephone’ on the album, leaving what the producers’ announcement today described as “an indelible imprint on the character as the show evolved over the course of several years.”
“I could not be more thrilled to be joining the cast of Hadestown,” Difranco said in a statement. “It’s like I get to rewind to my New York youth and follow the road not taken.”

Changes are coming to the Greek underworld — at least as it appears on Broadway. Australian pop musician Betty Who and Tony nominee Phillip Boykin are set to take over the leading roles of Persephone and Hades, respectively, in the hit musical, Hadestown, starting Sept. 5.
The complex, fraught relationship between Persephone and Hades provides one of the two main storylines in Hadestown. In Greek mythology, Persephone is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, and Hades (technically her uncle) is allowed to abduct her and make her Queen of the Underworld. In Hadestown,...

A new generation has discovered the joys of wintry, isolation-fueled ballads, but Greg Brown has been wallowing in them for four decades. With songs that straddle folk and country and resist outsized hooks in favor of gaunt, gently rippling chord changes, the Iowa-based troubadour, who’s released over two dozen records, has been a cult figure for a reason. He’s only approached a degree of mainstream exposure here and there (appearances on Prairie Home Companion and taking on the voice of Hades on Anaïs Mitchell’s original Hadestown album). But along the way,...

End Of The Road is a festival that keeps its promises. The cultured leftfield shindig – where croquet tournaments break out in forest glades and peacocks roam the trimmed lawns of Dorset’s Larmer Tree Gardens, unbothered by the experimental folk, rock, rap and electronic tomfoolery floating across the site – has been promising a weekend headlined by indie giants Pixies and Bright Eyes since 2020. Covid scuppered that event, and post-pandemic travel issues forced the 2021 bill to become more UK-based. But this year, Eotr puts its music where its mouth is at last, with plenty more curveballs thrown in to keep this crowd of discerning alternative music fans pleasingly off-balance.
The opening Thursday night bill is a brain-rattling case in point. On the main Woods Stage, LA’s Sudan Archives sets out to invent jig-hop, interspersing psychosexual ambient raps with ruined snippets of Irish folk played on the fiddle she brandishes throughout.

Exclusive: After winning last year’s Tony for Best Direction of a Musical for Hadestown, Rachel Chavkin is making her feature film directorial debut on Paramount’s psychological thriller Shrew’s Nest, a remake of the 2014 Juanfer Andres-Esteban Roel Spanish movie.
Set in Spain during the 1950s, Shrew’s Nest (local title Musarañas) follows an agoraphobic woman who raises her younger sister in an apartment locked away from the world. But one day, a reckless young neighbor, Carlos, falls down the stairwell and drags himself to their door. Someone has entered the shrew’s nest, and it doesn’t look like he’s leaving. The thriller is reminiscent of such Oscar-lauded pics as Misery and Black Swan. Weed Road and the Gotham Group are producing for Paramount. The script was adapted by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. The Ferryman, What The Constitution Means To Me and Tootsie continued to build some awards momentum this week, with the New York Drama Critics Circle naming Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman the 2018-19 season’s best play, Heidi Schreck’s Constitution as the best American play and Robert Horn/David Yazbek’s Tootsie best musical.

Has Broadway ever looked more Hollywood? Beetlejuice and Tootsie have joined a theatrical lineup that already includes Network, Pretty Woman and King Kong, to name a few of this season’s stage adaptations of Tinseltown classics — and judging by the latest arrivals’ box office performances, audiences show few signs of big-screen burnout.
Beetlejuice was a sellout in its first two previews at the Winter Garden Theatre, grossing $332,008, with an average ticket price of $123. Tootsie was comparable, grossing $354,746 for its first two previews at the Marquis, with attendance of 3,204 at 98% of capacity. Beetlejuice opens April 25 and Tootsie on April 23.
Overall, Broadway box office for Week 44, ending March 31, was up 8% from the previous week, scoring $36.8 million. Attendance for the 37 shows was 313,513, a 5% jump over the previous week.
Opening to ecstatic reviews at the Helen Hayes Theatre, Heidi Schreck’s What the Constitution Means to Me took in $276,611 for six previews and the opening-night performance,...

Broadway’s Temptations jukebox musical Ain’t Too Proud sang to the tune of $1 million-plus last week, joining the upper reaches of a generally on-key 35-show box office roster. In all, Broadway grossed $34,204,242, a 4% bump over the previous week’s take.
Attendance for the 35 productions during Week 43 (ending March 24) was up a commensurate 4% to 298,672.
Opening to mixed-to-positive reviews, the full-titled Ain’t Too Proud: The Life And Times of The Temptations grossed $1,102,218, a $152,437 increase over the previous week – and that’s with opening comps and press nights. Seats at the Imperial Theatre were 99.9% filled.
The Temps tale certainly got Broadway’s spring off to a fine start, with plenty of other hopefuls in the wings. What the Constitution Means to Me, writer-performer Heidi Schreck’s Off Broadway smash now in previews at Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theatre, played to nearly full houses — 98.2% of capacity, to be exact — and grossing $387,553, about...

Gold Derby’s 2019 Tony Awards prediction center is now open! Broadway productions must open by an April 25th cutoff date in order to be eligible for Tony consideration. So it’s time to make your early predictions in the race for Broadway’s highest honors.
Last year, “The Band’s Visit” stormed the ceremony with a whopping 10 wins, including Best Musical. David Yazbek finally became a Tony winner for his intimate Middle Eastern inspired score, and he will be back in contention this year for “Tootsie.” The musical adaptation of the classic film stars previous Tony nominee Santino Fontana (“Cinderella”) in the role Dustin Hoffman made famous. The show will face serious competition from “Hadestown,” a riff on the Orpheus and Eurydice myth with a folk opera score from Anais Mitchell. Director Rachel Chavkin (“The Great Comet”) has guided the show through successful runs Off-Broadway and in London, and is...

On “Not Many Miles to Go,” a new song from Rosanne Cash’s upcoming She Remembers Everything LP, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter delivers a bittersweet reflection on love, commitment, and the passage of time.
Coming on the heels of the title track and “Everyone But Me,” which were jointly released in September, “Not Many Miles to Go” is the third and most up-tempo of the bunch from Cash’s first album in five years. But it’s also tinged with sadness, as she ponders the inevitably fleeting nature of even the deepest bonds,...

Singer-songwriter and folk musician Mark Erelli has produced a pair of albums for Lori McKenna, accompanied musicians including Josh Ritter and Paula Cole on guitar, appeared on Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s 2007 Soul2Soul Tour, and released 11 albums as a solo artist. But in “By Degrees,” a song Rosanne Cash calls “the most compassionate, vivid and non-preaching anti-gun violence song I’ve ever heard,” Erelli shines an essential and sobering light on a topic that remains among the most heavily debated in the country.

Last month, Father John Misty released two new songs as part of his Spotify Singles session, a recurring series in which artists release a pair of tracks — typically one original and one cover — exclusively through the global streaming service.
For his cover song, the irony-loving singer-songwriter made a curious choice: Gillian Welch’s “Everything Is Free,” a gently-strummed folk lament that details the existential fear brought on when the labor of a working person suddenly loses its value overnight. When she wrote it 18 years ago, Welch was commenting on the...
