Following a high-profile divorce, star revives her career and says she's just an ordinary woman
Four months after abruptly divorcing Tom Cruise in one of the most talked-about breakups in the history of American showbusiness, Katie Holmes is making her debut on Broadway in New York, in a show expected to be one of the hottest tickets of the winter, not least due to her presence on stage.
Holmes is starring in a comedy focusing on family relationships in the mid-west where she grew up.
The career of the former Dawson's Creek actress floundered during her marriage and, since moving to New York with her daughter Suri, Holmes has kept a relatively low profile. In an interview with the New York Times last week, Holmes stressed the normality of her life as a working New York actress who rides the subway, takes her daughter to school and shops unaccompanied in...

The Los Angeles Press Club has nominated The Huffington Post for National Entertainment Journalism Awards in five categories, including best entertainment website, best critic and best business story. The winners will be announced at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 18.
HuffPost Entertainment was nominated for best entertainment website, and HuffPost TV's Maureen Ryan was nominated for best critic, an award she took home last year.
And, as if to prove that there is literally nothing at which he cannot excel, HuffPost blogger James Franco was nominated for best entertainment blog by an individual.
Two of the site's nominations recognized articles that were written for Huffington., HuffPost's iPad-native magazine. Michael Hogan's profile of independent film producers Lars Knudsen and Jay Van Hoy, nominated for best online feature or series, ran in the launch issue, and Michael Calderone's story on NBC's Olympic preparations, nominated for best business story on any media platform,...

Well, the early reports are true. After seven months of negotiations, Penske Media Corp., backed by hedge fund Third Point, has won 107-year-old trade paper Variety for $25 million. Just months ago Variety was thought to be worth $50 mlllion, which was still substantially lower than its pre-recession peak value. Jay Penske, 33, outbid New York Hedge Fund Avenue Capitol and supermarket mogul Ron Burkle. For much of its recent history the venerable daily and weekly Variety raked in millions at the top of the trade media heap. Today, Janice Min's The Hollywood Reporter, which also prints a weekly, and Deadline, launched by blogger Nikki Finke six years ago before Penske Media acquired it in 2009, dominate what is now an online niche. Variety used to look down its nose at both. Jay Penske, 33, told the La Times that he intended to turn Variety, which has a staff of about 120, back into a...

The sands keep shifting under media professionals who thought they knew what they were doing. During my two year stint at Variety, the print product ruled and the venerable 107-year-old trade was accustomed to raking in millions at the top of the trade media heap. The Variety chiefs looked down their noses at also-ran Hollywood Reporter and Deadline's Nikki Finke, who was seen an easily dismissable "blogger." To stay afloat as recession ad revenues plummeted, Variety slashed its most expensive name columnists and critics (including me) in favor of cheaper less-known writers and print support staff as it went behind an unforgiving pay wall and continued to churn out five print dailies plus one weekly edition. Meanwhile under editor Janice Min, THR cut its print daily in favor of a consumer-friendly weekly, and surged ahead of Variety. Screen International restrained its print output to a monthly and took its daily online,...
