How do you make a “rom-com” centered around a long-time married couple? Well, one idea would be to throw them a “curve”. With the Bracketts in this story, she’s forgotten their anniversary prompting him to take, well not desperate, but offbeat measures. Would it “spice” things up considerably, maybe rekindle those old sparks, if they pretended to be strangers meeting for the first time? But how could she have “blanked’ on the “big day”? For that answer, this new movie mixes in elements of an action flick. With that new twist, we learn that she indulges in many variations of Role Play.
Oh, the lady in question is Emma Brackett (Kaley Cuoco). At the start of the story, she’s on the job, donning a wig, and terminating a target. As in assassinate. From there she phones her handler Raj (Rudy Dharmalingam), and heads to the airport. In the next scene,...

Fresh off the first season of Based on a True Story, Kaley Cuoco is jumping right into another marriage riddled with secrets in Prime Video’s Role Play.
Cuoco’s character Emma has the picture-perfect life in suburban New Jersey, complete with two children and a loving husband (played by Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ David Oyelowo). But because that would make for a pretty boring movie, Emma has a little secret — she’s an assassin for hire, which her husband discovers when the couple decides to spice up their marriage with some role play. Gavin Wiesen’s All Nighter is essentially a lo-fi indie take on Meet the Parents. In the Ben Stiller role is Emile Hirsch as Martin, a bearded, banjo playing La layabout whose shirts go perpetually un-ironed. Filling Robert De Niro’s shoes is J.K. Simmons as his girlfriend Ginnie’s (Analeigh Tipton) father, Mr. Gallo, a smartly suited alpha male whose job is carrying out suspiciously sinister sounding “procurement.”
First impressions are disastrous, with Mr. Gallo blankly dismissing the wimpy, awkward creature his daughter has attached herself to. Ginnie seems to come to her senses, too, as she breaks up with Martin soon after. This all makes it something of a surprise when, six months later, Mr. Gallo unexpectedly turns up at Martin’s front door.

There’s something about the fall and the beginning of the school year that forces us to crave weightier matters. Popcorn nonsense like Independence Day Resurgence makes way for more thoughtful science fiction fare. While a lot of attention was devoted to the serious Arrival, there was another offering that had some strong themes undercut by weak execution.

Chicago – There is nothing like the feeling of watching a completely immersive sci-fi film that delivers the complexity of technology in a modest package, and uses elements of nature to create a beautiful contrast. Unfortunately, “Morgan” doesn’t deliver on the enlightenment it promises.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Trying to fill the role created by last year’s masterpiece “Ex Machina”, “Morgan” explodes with superficial artificiality. It poses the question of what constitutes “personhood” and explores it through shallow platitudes and out of character, obsessive behavior. The high concept story development seems to have been an overwhelming task for first-time feature film writer Seth W. Owen. While trying to introduce the same ideas of “humanity” that we’ve seen not only in last year’s films, but from films stemming all the way back to Fritz Lang’s 1927 film “Metropolis”, Owen manages to create a story that feels less like an echo and more like a lazy mimicry.

The core premise of Morgan, that of a laboratory made human striking out against it’s creators, is nothing new. We’ve seen it thousands of times of before, from Frankenstein to the last year’s Ex Machina, but this debut feature from Luke ‘son of Ridley’ Scott does attempt to make the premise it’s own, if it doesn’t always stick the landing. To delve deeper into the story, Kate Mara is Lee Weathers, a corporate trouble shooter set to a remote lab to determine whether or not Morgan (Anya Taylor Joy), a bio engineered artificial intelligence who has exceeded the expectations of her creators, is a danger to the world after a ‘tantrum’ leaves one of her handlers seriously injured. There’s nothing much more to the narrative than that, and the biggest problem is that screen writer Seth Owen doesn’t really develop the numerous interesting ideas he throws at us,...

Yes, Morgan’s just your average teenager, really - apart from the small detail that she’s a genetically-engineered super-being with powers of precognition and an unaccountable affinity for martial arts.
Morgan, played with pleasing intensity by Anya-Taylor Joy, resides behind bullet-proof perspex in a concrete bunker deep underground. Created for hazy purposes by a futuristic corporation, Morgan’s only five years old, but her rapid rate of growth means she looks much older. Over those five years, the scientists charged with looking after and monitoring Morgan have formed an emotional attachment to the super-powered youth; among them you’ll find Dr Simon Ziegler (Toby Jones), her surrogate father figure, and Amy (Rose Leslie), who becomes a kind of big sister.

Many storytellers have used science fiction to question human existence. Even if you haven’t read Mary Shelley’s iconic novel, you know the story of Dr. Frankenstein and his creation. You know of a scientist – I’ll leave calling him “mad” up to you – and his search to understand life and in doing so how he magically creates new life. You know of a tragic creature who is thrust into a world that is both fascinated and yet repelled by it. Though many would call the Frankenstein creature a him instead of an it, Kate Mara’s character Lee Weathers would be quick to correct you. Apparently artificial life should not be given proper pronouns, and while Luke Scott’s feature film debut seems ready to address the contemporary concerns over gender labels and life existing outside male and female labels, Morgan regresses into yet another forgettable attempt at...

Artificial intelligence is an integral part of 20th Century Fox’s new horror thriller Morgan, so it’s rather fitting that the studio approached Ibm Research to have their Watson computer spearhead the creation of a new movie trailer for the film ahead of its September 2nd release.
“Scientists at Ibm Research have collaborated with 20th Century Fox to create the first-ever cognitive movie trailer for the movie Morgan.
Utilizing experimental Watson APIs and machine learning techniques, the Ibm Research system analyzed hundreds of horror/thriller movie trailers. After learning what keeps audiences on the edge of their seats, the AI system suggested the top 10 best candidate moments for a trailer from the movie Morgan, which an Ibm filmmaker then edited and arranged together.”

The question of the existence of a soul has been one of the prevailing interests of modern science-fiction cinema. Films like Ex Machina, Her, Upstream Color, and now Luke Scott’s debut, Morgan, have have all prodded at the subject, keeping pace with societal paranoia about the obsolescence of humanity. This is far from a new idea. After all, the director’s own father, Ridley Scott, was exploring the Turing test more than three decades ago. But Morgan is worthy of conversation not for its achievements, but rather the way its failures and generalities characterize how far the genre has come.
Artificial intelligence is no longer the final frontier and Seth W. Owen’s script doesn’t just recognize that A.I’s are being made, it talks about previous models that didn’t live up to expectations. Modern sci-fi has moved past the point of pure invention to a goal of exceptionalism.

No one in Luke Scott’s “Morgan” acts like a human, which is fine enough for some of his characters — after all, this is a film about a genetically engineered being run totally amok — but becomes slightly more problematic once the film attempts to dig deeply into themes relating to human emotion, human behavior, human fallibility…the list goes on and on. “Morgan,” for all its ambitious sci-fi trappings, is really a film about how being human is hard and messy and weird, a message that’s difficult to deliver by way of wooden lines, worse delivery and a series of cheap, gotcha! “twists” that do its audience no favors.

If Morgan were a Crayola crayon, it’s cutesy name would be “Cement Mixer Grey.” If it were a culinary dish, it’d be a baked potato without a single topping (not even accidental ketchup drips from an overloaded hot dog). If it were a cinematic endeavor – which it is – Luke Scott’s sci-fi thriller would be a lazy, knee-jerk response to Ex Machina‘s provocative brilliance, relentless in its genre irreverence. There’s a time and a place for a such drab thrills like this, and they’re best enjoyed in small television bites while you glance up from your daily chores. They’re background noise at best, never striving to break its predictable mold.

The title character of Morgan, a sleek sci-fi/horror hybrid, is herself a hybrid: a humanoid made from synthetic DNA. She’s a biological organism, a scientific experiment, a corporate product. To some, fatefully, she’s a person. They’re the ones who call her “she” rather than “it” — a divide that neatly encapsulates the philosophical questions propelling writer Seth Owen’s high-concept scenario, among the most memorable screenplays on the 2014 Black List. In his first time at the helm of a feature, Luke Scott brings those questions to vivid life. Much of the modern-day monster story pulses with tension

Possessing infinite promise in a world full of people who are overly eager to prove their worth isn’t necessarily enough to guarantee success. The exploitation of that innocent hope by incalculable danger is powerfully showcased in the new official trailer for the upcoming sci-fi film, ‘Morgan.’ The trailer was released by the movie’s distributor, 20th Century Fox, which will unveil the thriller in theaters on September 2. ‘Morgan’ was helmed by first-time feature film director, Luke Scott, and written by ‘Peepers’ scribe, Seth Owen. Exploring artificial intelligence is no new thing in the world of science-fiction movies, but last year’s Ex Machina, which won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, helped sell a more believable scenario than perhaps ever before. While Alex Garland is off shooting his follow-up, Annihilation, this fall will bring another similarly-themed feature with Morgan.
Backed by Ridley Scott, his son Luke Scott has made his feature directorial debut with the project and today the full-length trailer has arrived. Starring Kate Mara, Anya Taylor-Joy (who is fantastic in this year’s hit The Witch), Paul Giamatti, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michelle Yeoh, Toby Jones, and Boyd Holbrook, the 20th Century Fox project follows a corporate risk-management consultant who is summoned to a remote research lab to determine whether or not to terminate an at-risk artificial being.

We've seen the name Luke Scott before. A few years ago, Ridley Scott's son made a big splash with a great short film called Loom (see it here) which suggested Scott Jr. had some talent behind the camera.
Admittedly, not just any director is given the opportunity to jump from something like Loom directly to a big budget sci-fi thriller but that last name certainly opens doors and though it likely had a big part to play in getting the project into production, Luke Scott still needed to direct the darned thing and judging from our first look at Morgan, he seems to have done a fine job.

Backed by Ridley Scott, his son Luke Scott has made his feature directorial debut with Morgan and today we have the first trailer ahead of a fall release. “What Morgan really alludes to is human beings becoming, in a sense, the creator,” Scott tells EW. “Not in a traditional religious sense, but an idea that we have the capabilities to become our own creator. And what I suspect could happen — we’ve seen it in all these movies, whether it’s Frankenstein or Metropolis — it’s the creation of a being that is greater than the creator.

After highlighting 50 films that are most certainly worth seeing this year, it’s time we venture into the unknown. While a multitude of 2016 previews simply regurgitate a list of dated releases, we’ve set out to focus on 100 films we’re genuinely looking forward to, regardless of their marketing budgets. While some might not have a release date — let alone any confirmed festival premiere — most have wrapped production and will likely debut at some point in 2016, so make sure to check back for updates over the next twelve months and beyond.
It should be noted that there are a number of films we’re greatly looking forward to, but whose release we aren’t confident about, including the next features from Claire Denis and Michael Haneke. (Rest assured, however, that we’ll have updates as they come in.)
Lastly, despite not coming out last year, as was planned, Orson Welles...

This week saw a number of sad losses in the entertainment industry. The singers of both “Louie Louie” and “Stand by Me” passed away this week, as well as Oscar-nominated screenwriter Don Mankiewicz, who was nominated for I Want to Live! Mankiewicz was the son of Herman J. Mankiewicz (Citizen Kane) and the nephew of Joseph L. Mankiewicz (All About Eve), and the father of John Mankiewicz (House of Cards). He was 93.
But perhaps most shocking was the loss of cinematographer Andrew Lesnie, who died suddenly this week at just 59 years old. Lesnie won an Oscar for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and he subsequently filmed all five of the remaining Lotr films and Peter Jackson’s King Kong and The Lovely Bones. Some of his more interesting credits are his work on Babe and Babe: Pig in the City. Lesnie’s last film however...

Kate Mara and Anya Taylor-Joy were cast last month, and now Paul Giammati and Toby Jones have signed onto the cast of Luke Scott's sci-fi thriller Morgan. Boyd Holbrook (Run All Night, Gone Girl) is also negotiating to jump aboard, but hasn't quite made a deal yet.Morgan revolves around a corporate risk-management consultant (Mara), although the actual corporate risk-management depicted on screen will likely be kept to a minimum when the consultant is summoned to a remote lab to evaluate an artificial being (Taylor-Joy) with a view to its termination.Giamatti will be playing a psychologist who struggles to actually relate to people, while Jones will be the chief scientist in charge of the facility. The role Holbrook is up for is that of a nutritionist working for Jones. There are shades of Ex Machina in Seth Owen’s 2014 Black List script, although it also taps into Ridley Scott’s A.

Like the genetic matter those brainy Engineers scatter about in Prometheus, Ridley Scott’s DNA is a potent filmmaking force in its own right. Two of his offspring, oldest son Jake (Welcome To The Rileys, Plunkett & Macleane) and daughter Jordan (Cracks), have already directed movies and now the third, Luke Scott, is joining them with his debut film Morgan. The sci-fi thriller has just added Kate Mara to its cast list.Mara will be joined by newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy, who impressed Sundance audiences with her turn in buzzed-about horror The Witch. Once again, Peepers, a film I saw on Sunday at the Just for Laughs Film Festival, is a proof that in Canadian cinema, there are no taboo topics. As a matter of fact, Peepers adds itself to the growing list of smartly written Canadian comedies that deal with sexual desire.
A group of peeping toms led by Steve Sherman (Joe Cobden), a loser who lives in his mom's basement, enjoys taking Montreal's chilly rooftops during the night. Through the unshuttered windows, they want to have a glimpse at a “hottie hookup,” a “panty party” or a “big booty buffet”. However, the peeping toms' life is about to change when Annette Fulvish (Janine Theriault), an academic interested by "male gaze", enters the domain of peeping, which is dominated by men.
At the same time, some members in the group begin to question their interest for peeping. Bobby (Ricky Mabe), the youngest member of the group,...

As usual, Montreal's Just for Laughs Film Festival has two Canadian films in store and they both come from the province of Quebec. The one we're going to talk is called Peepers, a comedy that follows three peeping toms from Montreal.
Led by the eagle-eyed Steve Sherman (Joe Cobden), a rag-tag group of Peepers take to Montreal’s chilly rooftops under cover of night. They’re on the prowl for the perfect peep—desperate to glimpse a “hottie hookup,” a “panty party” or a “big booty buffet” through unshuttered windows.
But their lives are about to change. Enter Annette Fulvish (Janine Theriault), a brazen academic who turns the tables by setting her sights on the Peepers themselves. Soon it’s a battle royale for rooftop supremacy—will these die-hard obsessives manage to defend their turf, or will Peeping as they know it never be the same?

It tells the story of a ruined ex-showman and actor who would like to get back in the world of burlesque theatre with his former colleagues and organize a tour. As for Peepers, it stars Joe Cobden, Paul Spence, Jessica Paré, Janine Theriault and Ricky Mabe. It tells the story of three men who sneak across Montreal's rooftops with binoculars. Yesterday, The Cultural Post learnt through Twitter that the teaser for the upcoming feature film Peepers is already online.
While the film's director is Seth W. Owen, the story was created by the imagination of Automatic Vaudeville, a Canadian comic trio made of Owen, Mark Slutsky and Daniel Perlmutter.
The story follows a group of voyeurs - or "peepers" (Joe Cobden, Paul Spence and Howard Bilerman) - who like to sneak across rooftops with binoculars at night. Moreover, they have an eye on women. However, an university student (Janine Theriault) plans to give to the "peepers" a taste of their own game. With a plot like that, needless to say that the film's story has been compared to Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window.
Besides, the film also stars Jessica Paré, Ricky Mabe and Amy Sobol.
Finally, a theatrical release date has yet to be announced for this comedy that was shot in Montreal.
