There was some concern that Francis Ford Coppola's self-funded passion-project, Megalopolis, might have trouble finding a U.S. distributor following reports of the legendary's filmmaker's alleged on-set antics, but Lionsgate has now announced that it's signed a deal to distribute the movie in theaters in the U.S. and Canada.

Despite receiving divisive reactions at the Cannes Film Festival, Lionsgate is ready to risk it for the biscuit with Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. Lionsgate is bringing Coppola’s science-fiction drama to theaters in the United States and Canada, says Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. The deal spins out of Lionsgate’s existing relationship with Coppola’s banner Zoetrope Studios after Lionsgate distributed Coppola’s Apocalypse Now Final Cut, The Conversation, The Colton Club Encore, The Man and His Dream, and One From the Heart: Reprise. Megalopolis will be released in domestic theaters and IMAX on September 27, 2024.

Francis Ford Coppola has done the seemingly impossible and secured North American distribution for his ambitious "Megalopolis." The film, which Coppola self-financed, wrote, directed, and produced, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, but hadn't secured a North American distributor by the end of the event. Now, however, Lionsgate Studios has confirmed that it will distribute "Megalopolis" in the U.S. and Canada.
IMAX already confirmed it would show the $120 million feature, and the film had previously secured several international distribution deals. But Coppola has now secured full theatrical distribution in the U.S. and Canada too, ensuring the masses will be able to witness a film that The Telegraph desribed as "'Succession' crossed with 'Batman Forever' and a lava lamp." Lionsgate confirmed it plans to release the film theatrically on September 27, 2024, and that it will also oversee the film's distribution on home entertainment platforms.

Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi epic “Megalopolis,” which proved to be wildly divisive after its Cannes Film Festival premiere, has finally found a distributor. Lionsgate has signed a deal to distribute the film in theaters in the U.S. and Canada.
It will be released on Sept. 27. “Megalopolis” is playing in Imax, but it will likely share screens with Christopher Nolan’s 10th anniversary “Interstellar” rerelease. It’ll also have to relinquish those coveted premium large format screens a week later, as “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which was filmed with Imax cameras, lands on Oct. 4.
“Francis is a legend. For many of us, his gifts to cinema were one of the inspirations to devote our own careers to film,” Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement. “It is a true privilege to work with him, and to bring this incredible, audacious, and utterly unique movie to theatrical audiences.

Lionsgate will be releasing Francis Ford Coppola’s $120M epic production Megalopolis stateside on Sept. 27 following its premiere at Cannes last month. This will be a wide release.
Deadline hears this is a distribution deal for Lionsgate. Coppola will own the movie, which is the case for many of his films under his American Zoetrope banner.
Lionsgate already has a theatrical release on that date, the Halle Berry horror movie Never Let Go. Universal has the DreamWorks Animation title The Wild Robot and Paramount the tenth anniversary re-release of the Christopher Nolan Warner Bros co-production Interstellar.
Coppola, as Deadline previously told you, already secured Imax theaters for the all-star ensemble which stars Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Giancarlo Esposito, Jon Voight, Shia Labeouf, and more.

Lionsgate has struck a deal to distribute Francis Ford Coppola’s polarising Megalopolis in North America following its recent Cannes world premiere.
‘Megalopolis’: Cannes Review
The epic sci-fi starring Adam Driver as a visionary architect will open in the US and Canada including Imax on September 27.
The deal with Lionsgate appears to be purely a distribution play and not an acquisition. Recouping would be a tall order for distributors given that Coppola, who envisioned the film decades ago, sold part of his vineyard to fund the $120m production.

Lionsgate will release Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed epic “Megalopolis” in U.S. and Canadian theaters, the studio announced on Monday.
The film will open on Sept. 27.
Written, produced and directed by Coppola, the movie is a decades-long passion project for the “Godfather” filmmaker. It is described as a Roman Epic fable set in an imagined Modern America. Adam Driver plays a genius artist who envisions a utopian future for the city of New Rome, while Giancarlo Esposito is the city’s Mayor who remains committed to a regressive status quo.
“Francis is a legend,” Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement to TheWrap. “For many of us, his gifts to cinema were one of the inspirations to devote our own careers to film. It is a true privilege to work with him and to bring this incredible, audacious and utterly unique movie to theatrical audiences.

In the summer of 1999, Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard were trapped in a strange sort of limbo. “The Blair Witch Project,” their debut feature, had exploded out of the Sundance Film Festival that January to become one of the most influential horror movies of the past 25 years — and, with a $35,000 budget, one of the most profitable independent films ever made. And yet Donahue was still puttering to her temp job in a 1984 Toyota Celica, before it broke down right underneath a billboard with her face on it. Williams’ boss kept asking him why he was still moving furniture in Westchester, N.Y., when he was on the cover of Newsweek. And Leonard found himself serving food to his agent at a catering gig days before he appeared on “The Tonight Show.”
“My agent asked me what the fuck I was doing,” Leonard says. “I said, ‘You know...

Earlier today, the news broke that author Suzanne Collins is writing a new Hunger Games novel titled Sunrise on the Reaping. It will arrive in bookstores on March 18, 2025, and features a story which takes place 40 years after The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
"With 'Sunrise on the Reaping,' I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, 'the easiness with which the many are governed by the few,'" Collins explained. "The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question 'Real or not real?' seems more pressing to me every day."

"The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question 'Real or not real?' seems more pressing to me every day."

"The Hunger Games" are far from over. Not only has it been confirmed that author Suzanne Collins is continuing the franchise with a brand new prequel novel, but Lionsgate has also announced that the forthcoming book will be turned into a movie. Titled "Sunrise on the Reaping," the book is due to hit shelves in 2025, with the movie dated for 2026. Most crucially, this new story will fill in the history of a character fans have wanted to know more about for a long time. Namely, Haymitch Abernathy.
According to a press release, the book will hit shelves on March 18, 2025. Lionsgate wasted precisely zero time in getting the rights to the film locked up. Francis Lawrence, who has directed every entry in the franchise save for the original, is in talks to return for this latest installment. That makes every bit of sense given the success of last year's "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes...

Bright and early this morning, the AP reported that Suzanne Collins was at work on a new “Hunger Games” novel, “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.” And sure enough, Lionsgate is already at work on turning that book into another new “Hunger Games” movie. The film adaptation already has a theatrical-release date.
The big-screen version of “Sunrise on the Reaping” will be released by Lionsgate on November 20, 2026, after Collins’ book publishes from Scholastic on March 18, 2025.
And the whole crew is back to shepherd this new “Hunger Games” movie, including franchise producer Nina Jacobson and her partner Brad Simpson for their Color Force banner. Francis Lawrence, who has directed each film since “Catching Fire,” is in talks to return to this one as well. No cast has been announced.

Lionsgate has unveiled plans for a new Hunger Games movie, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, based on franchise writer Suzanne Collins’ just-announced new novel.
The screen adaptation, unveiled on Thursday by Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, has Francis Lawrence in talks to direct the adaptation for Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson’s Color Force banner. Lawrence, screenwriter Michael Arndt and producer Jacobson earlier teamed with Lionsgate on four film adaptations of earlier Collins books — The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay — that took in $3.3 billion in box office.
Collins and her publisher Scholastic announced the fifth book in the series Thursday. Scholastic will publish Sunrise on the Reaping simultaneously in print, digital and audio formats in North America and other English-speaking territories on March 18, 2025.
There’s no word yet on casting for the film, but Lionsgate has set a wide theatrical release on Nov.

It stands to reason that with announcement of another Hunger Games novel by Suzanne Collins, due out on March 18, 2025, Lionsgate would greenlight another movie. The big screen take of the next prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, will hit screens on Nov. 20, 2026 and the franchise filmmaker of the last four movies, Francis Lawrence, is in talks to return to direct.
In addition Hunger Games producer Nina Jacobson, alongside her producing partner Brad Simpson, is returning to produce the next prequel under their Color Force banner. It reps Color Force’s sixth outing since bringing the series to Lionsgate in 2012.

“Small Things Like These,” the Irish drama starring newly-minted Oscar winner Cillian Murphy that opened the Berlinale earlier this year, finally has a domestic home, Variety has learned, with Lionsgate picking up the film for the U.S., the U.K. and Ireland.
The studio will partner with Roadside Attractions for its North American theatrical release.
Based on the Booker Prize-nominated book by Claire Keegan and directed by Tim Mielants, “Small Things Like These,” premiered to solid reviews in Berlin. Stephen King has been terrifying his audience since his first full-length novel, Carrie, released in 1974. The world has come to know him as the ‘King of Horror’ and rightfully so. Whether it is the story of a sinister presence in an empty hotel or the trauma caused by Pennywise, the author sure knows how to keep his readers up at night. His books have been adapted into films which are equally, if not more, petrifying.

However, the question is, is there anything that terrifies the man who has made scaring others into a living? Well, there might be one such film out there. Released in 1999, The Blair Witch Project is a unique take on the horror genre that uses the found-footage technique to scare its audience, including Stephen King who had to turn his screen off without watching it to the end.

When Peter Billingsley's comedy "Couples Retreat" was released in 2009, some critics argued that the title should serve as a warning. It only garnered a 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Peter Bradshaw from the Guardian saying that former Prime Minister of Cambodia, Pol Pot, could have written a warmer, funnier film.
The film follows four middle-aged couples on a retreat to a tropical resort called Eden where they mean to rekindle their respective flagging relationships. The couples are played by Vince Vaughn and Malin Åkerman, Jon Favreau and Kristin Davis, Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, and Faizon Love and Kali Hawk. The cast was stacked, and the story interspersed run-of-the-mill midlife crises with limp attempts at slapstick. The film cost $60 million to make and netted $171 million worldwide, so it wasn't a bomb, but it also was dismissed and forgotten by the culture at large.

Could the John Wick universe be poised to introduce an assassin even more formidable than the legendary Baba Yaga (Keanu Reeves) himself? Well, it seems the possibility is high since the acclaimed action franchise is expanding again with Donnie Yen’s enigmatic character, Caine, the blind master of lethality. For the unversed, he was introduced to us in John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023).

The John Wick universe continues to grow, with Donnie Yen to get his own spin-off. The film will continue the adventures of his character, Caine.
Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski, star and director of the popular John Wick series, may be taking a well-earned break from the franchise, but that isn’t stopping Lionsgate from finding ways to keep the good ship Wick on its journey to box office dollars.
There’s the TV prequel spin-off, The Continental, which has already released, not to mention Ballerina, the recently-delayed spin-off movie that will feature Ana de Armas as an assassin who looks to have graduated from the same killing school that taught John Wick himself.
Gird yourself for more stories from the John Wick universe, though, as it’s been announced by Lionsgate (thanks Dark Horizons) that Donnie Yen’s Caine character will also be getting a spin-off film. It will...

The "John Wick" universe is continuing to expand, with or without Keanu Reeves. Lionsgate has announced that a new spin-off set within the world of the beloved action franchise is on the way. This one will focus on Donnie Yen's blind assassin character Caine, who was introduced in last year's "John Wick: Chapter 4." While much about the film remains under wraps for the time being, it will pay off a subplot that was previously teased by director Chad Stahelski.
According to Variety, Yen will star in the currently untitled spin-off film, with Robert Askins ("The Umbrella Academy") set to pen the screenplay. Production is due to begin next year in Hong Kong. The new spin-off is said to "continue Yen's story arc following the events of 'John Wick: Chapter 4,' as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table." Yen had this to...

Lionsgate is expanding the billion-dollar John Wick franchise as the studio is developing a film for Donnie Yen to reprise his role in a new film centered around Caine, his character from John Wick: Chapter 4, to begin production in Hong Kong next year.
While the logline is being kept under wraps, the new film will continue Yen’s story arc following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.
The new film was developed as part of Chad Stahelski’s recently announced deal with Lionsgate overseeing the expansion of the John Wick universe and will be shepherded by the franchise producers, Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, and Stahelski, who produces through his 87Eleven Entertainment production banner.

Lionsgate is developing a John Wick spinoff movie around Donnie Yen’s Caine assassin character.
Yen will reprise his John Wick: Chapter 4 role in the untitled project set to shoot in Hong Kong in 2025. The franchise expanding film, with no director yet announced, will follow the events of John Wick 4 as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.
The project also follows Yen, a veteran Hong Kong action hero, pushing back against what he claimed were Asian stereotypes in the original script for John Wick 4. After some prodding, John Wick 4 director Chad Stahelski agreed to change the name and clothes for Yen’s character.
China-born Yen is a household name internationally thanks to his hugely popular and acclaimed Ip Man movie series, and he has crossed over to Hollywood with outings in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which grossed over a billion dollars,...

Hold onto your butts because the billion-dollar John Wick franchise is expanding with another feature film focusing on Donnie Yen’s Caine from John Wick: Chapter 4. Yen is reprising his role from the action-packed sequel, with production kicking off in Hong Kong next year. Plot details remain a mystery. However, Lionsgate says Caine will continue the character’s story following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.
Robert Askins, a Tony nominee for his play Hand to God and a veteran of The Umbrella Academy and AMC’s The Son, will pen the screenplay.
The Caine spin-off comes to Lionsgate as part of Chad Stahelski’s deal with the studio to oversee and expand the John Wick universe beyond the core films, the upcoming spin-off, Ballerina, starring Ana De Armas, and The Continental TV miniseries.

The world of “John Wick” is expanding even more.
Donnie Yen’s blind assassin Caine, who was introduced in last year’s “John Wick: Chapter 4,” will be the center of a new spinoff.
There are no other details yet, but the spinoff will “continue Yen’s story arc following the events of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,’ as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table,” according to Lionsgate.
Robert Askins, who’s written for Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy,” AMC’s “The Son” and received a 2015 Tony nomination for his play “Hand to God,” is writing the screenplay. Lionsgate will begin production on the untitled movie next year in Hong Kong.
The Caine spinoff is developed through “John Wick” director Chad Stahelski’s development deal with Lionsgate to oversee the action franchise. Stahelski will produce through his 87Eleven Entertainment along with Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.

Expanding its hit John Wick franchise, Lionsgate is developing a project in which Donnie Yen to reprise his role from John Wick: Chapter 4, the company’s spring 2023 global hit starring Keanu Reeves.
The new film, set to begin production in Hong Kong next year, will continue the story arc of Caine, Yen’s character from the fourth John Wick installment, which grossed more than $440m worldwide.

Lionsgate will handle U.S. distribution of eagerly awaited “Greenland” sequel “Greenland: Migration,” Variety can confirm.
STX, which has a distribution partnership with Lionsgate, is handling international distribution.
Directed by Ric Roman Waugh from a screenplay by Chris Sparling and Mitchell Lafortune, “Greenland: Migration” sees Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin return as John and Allison Garrity. Along with their diabetic son Nathan, the couple were forced to flee in the first film as a comet hurtled towards earth, threatening to destroy the planet. In the sequel the family embark on a perilous journey across what’s left of Europe to find a new home.
Butler and Baccarin are joined by Roman Griffin Davis (“Jojo Rabbit”), Amber Rose Revah (“The Punisher”) and Trond Fausa (“Oppenheimer”) in the film, which is produced by Anton, STX Entertainment, Thunder Road Pictures and Butler’s G-base Entertainment.

Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams, stars of the seminal horror film “The Blair Witch Project,” released a public letter to Lionsgate on Saturday asking for more robust compensation for their work on the 1999 blockbuster, as well as “meaningful consultation” on any future “Blair Witch” projects that use their names or likenesses.
The statement comes 10 days after Lionsgate and Blumhouse announced they plan to revive the franchise with a new movie that would provide, in the words of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson, “new vision for ‘Blair Witch’ that will reintroduce this horror classic for a new generation.” Lionsgate did not produce or distribute the original 1999 film. It acquired the property through its 2003 buyout of independent film distributor Artisan Entertainment.
The Lionsgate-Blumhouse announcement sparked a strongly worded response via social media from Leonard, who said that no one had contacted him or his costars about the project in advance.

There is no such thing as too new a concept in Hollywood. The industry could never have enough new ideas. That is the one currency that is always sought after. But what about bringing back an idea from the past? An idea that was a hit back in the day but has since been banished from pop culture. Lionsgate and Blumhouse are doing exactly that, with the announcement that they are all set to bring back The Blair Witch Project, a path-breaking movie back in its day.

There won’t be much by way of Marvel this year with Deadpool & Wolverine being their only significant release. Additionally, the company is seeking to rebound from a year of poorly received works like The Marvels and Secret Invasion, plus their shocking overhaul of Daredevil: Born Again, as well as their rising star Jonathan Majors getting released from his role as Kang amid his legal controversy. While Kevin Feige was able to showcase some “f*cking amazing” footage of Deadpool & Wolverine at CinemaCon this year, Marvel’s only other big bit of news in recent months came in the shape of The Fantastic Four.
This past phase for Marvel Studios attempted to set up the new roster of heroes, which would be standing in the way of Kang for the new Avengers movies. The new generation included Shang-Chi from the 2021 movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

We’re leaving Las Vegas.
CinemaCon 2024 is over — time for studios to go out and prove their pitches at the box office. Based on what we saw, or really what we didn’t see, that will be an uphill battle.
First, let’s take a moment to appreciate the folks and films that showed up. Arguably, the biggest star to attend CinemaCon was Kevin Costner. The cynical point of view? He was pitching not one but two “Horizon” films to theater owners — and simultaneously pitching third and fourth installments to Warner Bros. Plus, Costner received a trophy (the CinemaCon Visionary Award), for which WB execs shooed him offstage just to call him back up. Kinda silly. Speaking of WB execs and no-shows, if David Zaslav was in town, he didn’t come on stage.
Jeff Goldblum did, as did his fellow “Wicked” co-stars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Michelle Yeoh.

Jason Blum now has his hands on The Blair Witch Project, and a big screen reboot is on the way: more here.
By this stage, we can tick the popular horror franchises off as they take their place in the reboot queue. At the time of writing, The First Omen is in cinemas. We’ve had Scream reboots, a new Salem’s Lot is (finally) on the way, and decisions are being made as to the next direction for The Exorcist. Now? Let’s add The Blair Witch Project to the pile, a series that thus far covers three films, the last of which came from Adam Wingard back in 2016.
Lionsgate and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse company have just been working together on the release of Jeff Wadlow’s Imaginary, and now they’ve inked a fresh deal to oversee a new Blair Witch film. Likely lots of new Blair Witch films.

Could a little of Barbie's girl power help Lionsgate finally crack the Monopoly movie adaptation out of the development limbo it's been stuck in for seemingly eons? The studio is certainly hoping so, hatching a deal with Margot Robbie and her LuckyChap team to produce the film.
Monopoly might not sound like the sort of game naturally that lends itself to a movie — you know, since it doesn't really have a narrative beyond trying to be incredibly careful with your cash and being the best a capitalism to defeat your opponents, but then Greta Gerwig spun gold out of Barbie for Warners.
Lionsgate didn't confirm who, if anyone is attached to actually make the film, but this is one that has been floating around for years, with Ridley Scott most famously looking to put together a take for 20th Century Fox in the years before it was swallowed by Disney.
