Yulene Olaizola’s “Tragic Jungle,” Natalia Meta’s “The Intruder” and Clarisa Navas’ “One in a Thousand” will compete in the San Sebastian Film Festival’s Latinos Horizontes, a showcase of standout recent movies from Latin America that this year underscores the emergence or consolidation of a new generation of female filmmakers in Latin America.
In all, women direct or co-direct seven of the nine features in Horizontes Latinos, a section which also features two world premieres: “La Verónica,” from Chile’s Leonardo Medel; and “Unlimited Edition,” co-directed by Virginia Cosín, Edgardo Cozarinsky, Santiago Loza and Romina Paula.
Certainly, this year’s San Sebastian makes no claim via its selection to women having suddenly taken over the Latin American industry: Four of the five titles from the region in other sections, including main competition (Argentine Eduardo Crespo’s “Nosotros Nunca Moriremos”) and New Directors (Brazilian João Paulo Miranda’s “Memory House”) are made by men.

After 37 years as the nation’s premier Lgbtq film festival, Outfest shows no signs of slowing down. The 2019 festival, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles from July 18-28, has just announced its full schedule. The lineup features a combination of festival favorites and rarely-seen foreign films, placing Lgbtq cinema in a truly global context.
The festival opens on July 18 with “Circus of Books,” the Tribeca hit about a daughter’s learning about her parents’ groundbreaking gay porn shop. It closes out with Sundance breakout “Before You Know It,” and will feature 28 world premieres during its run.

Philadelphia-based indie distributor Breaking Glass Pictures has acquired North American rights to Mexican director Julian Hernandez’s female empowerment thriller “Tattoo of Revenge” in a deal closed with Italy-based company The Open Reel at the Cannes film market.
“Tatoo” is the latest feature by the prolific Hernandez who is known on the festival circuit for films about gay men seeking happiness such as “A Thousand Clouds of Peace Fence the Sky, Love; Your Being Love Will Never End” and “Raging Sun, Raging Sky” which both won the Berlin Film Festival’s Teddy Award for films with Lgbt topics, respectively in 2003 and 2009.
Shot in both black-and-white and color, the pic is set in chaotic 1990s Mexico City where criminals go unpunished and a heroine becomes the avenger of raped young women. Wearing different disguises, she seduces the rapists, puts them to sleep, and then brands them with tattoos, according to promotional materials.

I have no idea what’s happening inside Santiago Loza’s Brief Story from the Green Planet. This quest on behalf of three outcast best friends since childhood to deliver an ailing alien to the place where one’s grandmother found it is disorienting and obtuse, but above all else beautiful. There are parallels running through every scene whether the sense of “other,” the desire to feel included and at-home, or the notion of embracing one’s origins no matter how hurtful the memories might prove. And somehow nobody seems shocked to find a little blue comatose creature sleeping within an ice cube-filled suitcase. It’s almost as though its presence provides them comfort instead, opening their minds to accept their faults, own their eccentricities, and find contrition.

A buddy movie with an alien, Argentine Loza’s 10th feature takes a look at three outsiders — trans Tani; Pedro, a voguing dancer; and Daniela, depressed after a break-up — tasked with returning an alien, a friend of Tani’s grandma, back to its planet. A low-fi road movie about friendship.
Divine Love
Gabriel Mascaro
Set in 2027 in a Brazil swept by evangelicism, immersed in disco hymns, drive-in confessionals and pregnancy detectors, a deeply religious divorced notary attempts to reconcile her faith, her job and her inability to conceive. Well received at Sundance. Sales: Memento Films Intl.

Casey Affleck has been relatively quiet since winning an Oscar for his leading role in “Manchester by the Sea,” but he’s about to break his silence in a big way. The actor is making his narrative directorial debut with “Light of My Life,” which was just added to the Panorama section of next month’s Berlin Film Festival. Affleck stars alongside Elisabeth Moss and newcomer Anna Pniowsky in the post-apocalyptic drama, which tells of a “society without women” where “gender roles have to be renegotiated.”
The full list of new additions to the Panorama section:
“La Arrancada (On the Starting Line)” — France / Cuba / Brazil
by Aldemar Matias
Aldemar Matias delivers this delicate, sensitively filmed family portrait from Cuba. The life of competitive athlete Jenniffer is on the brink of change, just like the whole country. She is poised on the starting blocks – and not just in the 100-meter dash.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s 16th annual Latinbeat program (July 12-21) presents the latest works from South American filmmakers from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, and Uruguay. The festival opens strongly, with Argentine writer/director Santiago Loza's sensitive, engaging drama "La Paz." In this beautifully modulated redemption tale, Liso (Lisandro Rodríguez) moves back to his middle-class home after being released from a psychiatric institution. He lounges around, and struggles trying to "get his life back." Liso's interactions with his parents and various young women are difficult and complicated; he seems to prefer spending time with his grandmother and the family's Bolivian maid. Rodríguez gives an outstanding performance. His anxiety and restlessness are palpable, right up to the film's satisfying finale. Latinbeat also presents a retrospective of Argentinean director Mathías Piñeiro. The filmmaker will be on hand to...

Catherine Grant's post-holiday return to blogging and tweeting has reminded me that some of her invaluable pointers to online resources over the past couple of weeks slipped right on past me during the year-end crunch. High time to catch up:
The new World Picture, #6, bears the ominous title "Wrong."
"The Disgust Issue" of Film-Philosophy. In her introduction, guest editor Tina Kendall notes an increasing interdisciplinary "concern with thinking through the relations between bodily sensation, emotion, and cognition (especially as these are mediated by films and other cultural forms), and with probing the political, moral, and ethical implications that arise from those particular conditions of embodiment."
The second issue of Cinema: Journal of Philosophy and the Moving Image.

Here’s the just issued press release announcing the nominees for the 2011 Heterodox Award, given by Cinema Eye Honors and sponsored by Filmmaker.
New York – The Cinema Eye Honors for Nonfiction Filmmaking today announced the five nominees for its second annual Cinema Eye Heterodox Award, sponsored by Filmmaker Magazine. The 2012 Heterodox Award will be presented at the Cinema Eye Honors for Nonfiction Filmmaking on January 11 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, New York.
The Cinema Eye Heterodox Award honors a narrative film that imaginatively incorporates nonfiction strategies, content and/or modes of production. These films illuminate the formal possibilities of nonfiction filmmaking while raising provocative questions about on-going documentary orthodoxy and the perceived boundaries between narrative and nonfiction filmmaking. Last year’s inaugural Heterodox Award went to Matt Porterfield’s Putty Hill.
“As more and more nonfiction films integrate artistic fictional devices and narrative structures, and...

Skolimowski at work, from the December 1968 issue of Films and Filming,
via chained and perfumed.
Jerzy Skolimowski's comeback as a director after a break of nearly two decades threw many for a loop. The year was 2008, the venue was Cannes and the film was Four Nights with Anna. "Wait, what is this, exactly?" asked Daniel Kasman here in The Notebook. The answer Patrick Z McGavin settled on: "a small but crucial movie," and Skolimowski would follow it up with Essential Killing, which provoked far more resolute reactions, both positive and negative, when it premiered last fall in Venice.
Last month, Deep End (1970) emerged from legal limbo and, restored, it's currently touring the UK and sees a release on DVD in July. Now the full-blown retrospective The Cinema of Jerzy Skolimowski is on at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York through July 3 and, in Los Angeles, Cinefamily...

Claire Denis, president of the Un Certain Regard jury (see the Cannes interview) has announced that the top award goes to Hong Sang-soo's Ha Ha Ha. The jury prize goes to October (Octubre), "a first feature by Peruvian brothers Daniel and Diego Vega," reports the Afp. "The movie tells the story of a Lima loan shark who suddenly finds himself saddled with a baby. The best acting prize went to the three actresses who play women who travel to a remote town to do welfare work among the local poor in the Argentinian film Los Labios, by Ivan Fund and Santiago Loza." There was enormous surprise Sunday evening at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival where the Palme d’Or was awarded to Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s captivating Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. This film was co-produced by the UK, France, Germany and Spain. At 39, the director confirms his original talent previously lauded at Cannes with the Un Certain Regard Prize in 2002 for Blissfully Yours and the Jury Prize in 2004 for Tropical Malady.
With triple success for France and honours for Italy and Spain, Europe is also well-represented in a prize list that was apparently the subject of intense discussions. The Grand Prize went to Of Gods and Men by French director Xavier Beauvois , while his compatriot Juliette Binoche scooped Best Actress for Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy. Mathieu Amalric completes the French haul with Best Director for On Tour (co-produced with Germany).
