Stars: Josh Ruben, Aya Cash, Chris Redd Rebecca Drysdale | Written and Directed by Josh Ruben
Well-versed veteran of the comedy scene, Josh Ruben makes his directorial feature film debut here, with Scare Me, a film that aims to blend comedy and horror in a new way. Something fresh in a sub-genre that is well-trodden is always intriguing, and it isn’t easy to do, not in an age where it’s fairly rare to avoid walking the same steps and tropes that others have walked before.
Scare Me is something of a stage-play on screen, really. It has a small cast of only four characters, with two of them being the bulk of the film. Fred (Ruben) and Fanny (Aya Cash) are strangers who run into each other whilst renting cabins in the middle of nowhere in order to both focus on writing projects. For nearly 15 years, Josh Ruben had been working in the industry making a name for himself on a variety of projects, but despite finding success in the world of comedy and a steady stream of commercial work, he still felt like something was missing. Eventually, Josh arrived at a crossroads, both personally and professionally, and decided it was time to get out there and start telling stories on his terms.
“This was a three-part journey for me,” explained Ruben. “I had this wonderfully privileged position of building up a brand and a name and a following for myself as a comedian and as a sketch comic writer personality as a cast member in the CollegeHumor world. But when I left CollegeHumor, I left to pursue a commercial directing career with a directing partner I had at the time, as that offered me the safety of a livable wage.”

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” has found its new head writer in Colin Elzie.
Elzie has been a writer on the show since 2016. He has been in the head writer role since the end of last year, after Rebecca Drysdale left in November.
Deadline first reported the news of Elize.
“The Tonight Show” underwent several staffing changes behind the camera in the last year. Most notably, Gavin Purcell exited as showrunner, a role he only planned to hold temporarily, and was replaced by Jamie Granet-Bederman. “The Tonight Show” is produced by Universal Television and Broadway Video with Lorne Michaels as exec producer.
The show is coming off some of its worst ratings in Fallon’s tenure of hosting the show, which has plummeted during the Trump years. On Monday, Jan. 11, it drew the fourth-smallest audience ever for an original episode of the show, according to Nielsen’s final ratings.

Freeform has decided not to move forward with the dark comedy series “Pippa Smith: Grown-Up Detective” from executive producer Joss Whedon, TheWrap has learned exclusively.
Representatives for Freeform did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment on when and why the show, which had been in development at the Disney-owned cable channel since June 2018, had been scrapped. A rep for Whedon had no comment.
According to an individual familiar with the project, Whedon did not have a direct or substantial role in developing the half-hour series, which was created by comedians Siobhan Thompson and Rebecca Drysdale. The show was to center on Pippa Smith, a twentysomething who played a former kid sleuth on TV, “as she deals with relationships, addiction and being too dang old for the detecting game.” Pippa would solve a new case in every episode, “while unraveling a larger mystery and attempting to navigate her messy personal life.

Late-night is expected to get a little bit sillier in 2021.
Remember when the late-night shows did daft sketches with celebrities, focused on strange local news or, not to get too political, made fun of the color of the President’s suit?
There is a prediction from a swathe of late-night writers and showrunners that Deadline has spoken to that many of these shows will now devote more time to the offbeat comedy that many of them trafficked in before Donald Trump ran for and became President of the United States.
“We deserve to have some frivolity in our lives,” one late-night showrunner told Deadline.
“I’m looking forward to the field opening up comedically, where we can do jokes about the President or we can take a day off from doing jokes about the President because not everything is an emergency all of a sudden,” said Alex Baze, head writer...

Sometimes a writer and the show they’re heading up just aren’t the best fit possible, and this appears to be why Rebecca Drysdale is leaving The Tonight Show, since she’s grown tired of writing Trump sketches apparently and is under the impression that it continues to build the power base of Trump. It feels as though she might not have been keeping up on recent events since every Trump sketch to date hasn’t exactly bolstered the president’s, former president’s, position since for the last four years many upon many people have been doing whatever is possible to ensure that the

There has been yet another change behind the scenes at “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”
Head writer Rebecca Drysdale is exiting her role on the show, Variety has confirmed. In a private Facebook message obtained by the Chicago Sun Times, Drysdale explained that it was a mutual decision, after both parties agreed she “was not a good fit for the show.”
“They made it clear that I was not a good fit for the show, and I did not disagree. I wish it had gone differently and I had been able to be what they needed but that is not how it shook out,” Drysdale wrote in the post.
She also expressed relief at never having to write jokes or sketches about President Donald Trump ever again, saying that in her view, making fun of the President only serves to amplify his power.
“I believe that comedy is a powerful tool.

Rebecca Drysdale is leaving as head writer for “The Tonight Show” after only 6 months.
Drysdale announced the news in a private Facebook message, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. A rep for the show did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
Drysdale said the decision was mutual.
In her note, which was shared by the Sun-Times, Drysdale swore off of writing any jokes about Donald Trump, who is currently vying for a second term as president against former vice president Joe Biden. She told TheWrap her distaste for writing Trump skits did not play any role in her exit.
“I am making the decision for myself to never work on, write, or be involved with, another Trump sketch ever again,” she wrote, according to the paper. “I have landed in several jobs and situations over the last few years, not just ‘The Tonight Show,’ where the project of making fun of Trump,...

Well-versed veteran of the comedy scene, Josh Ruben makes his directorial feature film debut here, with Scare Me, a Shudder Original, that aims to blend comedy and horror in a new way. Something fresh in a sub-genre that is well-trodden is always intriguing, and it isn’t easy to do, not in an age where it’s fairly rare to avoid walking the same steps and tropes that others have walked before.

Josh Ruben has definitely seen “The Shining,” likely more than once, and probably took notes at least half of the time. Having boned up on his horror classics, the actor-turned-writer-director gleefully kills more than a few of those darlings in his clever feature debut, “Scare Me.” Bolstered by a creative storytelling set-up, Ruben and his very game co-star Aya Cash skewer horror tropes as well as cultural obsessions ranging from TV talent shows to the Bechdel Test.
The result is — perhaps too much. With a padded running time that clocks in at nearly 105 minutes, the film seems like the perfect pick for a snappy, scary 90-minute event. Initially imagining writer’s block and creative stultification as man’s greatest horrors (see: “The Shining”) before moving into a deeper exploration of the trauma of gender relations, “Scare Me” packs ambitious ideas inside a small-scale concept.

"Just because you're the best-selling author doesn't mean you get to school me on the story..." Shudder has debuted the full-length official trailer for an indie horror comedy film titled Scare Me, marking the feature directorial debut of actor / writer Josh Ruben. This first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it's a clever take on mumblecore, stuck-in-a-cabin, meta horror storytelling. It's about two horror writers, who end up battling in a cabin over who's horror stories are better. During a power outage, two strangers tell scary stories. The more Fred and Fanny commit to their tales, the more the stories come to life in the dark of a Catskills cabin. The horrors of reality manifest when Fred confronts his ultimate fear: Fanny may be the better storyteller. Starring Josh Ruben and Aya Cash, along with Chris Redd and Rebecca Drysdale. One of the most successful genres in this strange year has been horror. The Invisible Man, Relic, The Lodge, She Dies Tomorrow, Amulet, The Rental, and La Llorona are just a handful of titles that have caused fear in audiences, and now Josh Ruben’s Scare Me is joining the club. Starring Aya Cash (You’re The Worst), Chris Redd (SNL), Rebecca Drysdale, and Ruben himself, the plot follows Ruben’s Fred, a copywriter who checks himself into a cabin to work on his novel before he finds himself snowed in. There he meets a horror author (Cash) and they both decide to try and scare one another to pass the time. While the film was made before the coronavirus pandemic, one could imagine a film about two people who find themselves stuck indoors will find new relevance when it gets released by Shudder Films this October.

Writers from “The Tonight Show” virtually joined Variety’s Marc Malkin to discuss working from home, ideas that didn’t make it to air and how Tuesday’s hilarious “Tiger King” sketch came to be.
Presented by the Writers Guild Foundation, the panel consisted of “Tonight Show” head writer Rebecca Drysdale along with Gerard Bradford and Jeremy Bronson, who are both writers and producers. Although social distancing guidelines have turned their writer’s room into a “writer’s Zoom,” all three have leaned in to the reality of quarantine to produce some of Fallon’s funniest sketches yet.
Drysdale was named head writer only a month ago, meaning that she has not actually been in the official writer’s room yet. Despite this, Drysdale said she has enjoyed the challenge the quarantine has presented the “Tonight Show” team.

Last year’s Uncut Gems summed up what many people believe to be the most frustrating thing about Adam Sandler‘s career. On several occasions the actor has proven himself capable of delivering phenomenal performances in more serious fare, but those are very few and far between as he instead seems content to continue churning out the formulaic lowbrow comedies that he’s built his entire brand on over the last 25 years.
Although a lot of folks would disagree, Sandler claims that he’s never phoned in a performance in his life, and while the overwhelming majority of his output is routinely savaged by critics, it appears that Netflix subscribers can’t get enough of him, with the streaming giant reporting that over 2 billion hours of Sandler-related content have been watched since he signed an exclusive deal with them in 2014.

“Scare Me,” written and directed by first-time filmmaker Josh Ruben, is a spook show stripped to the basics. A boy and a girl, Fred and Fanny (Ruben and Aya Cash of “You’re the Worst”), hole up in a snowbound cabin swapping scary tales by the fireplace. He postures as a horror novelist, director, screenwriter and actor (though he’s really a frustrated marketer). She really is a horror novelist, the hip new darling author of a zombie best-seller, which Fred finds as intimidating as a dark basement. “No judgies!” promises Fanny, goading him into going first. Whether capturing or creating a world, the objects onscreen tell as much of a story as the people within it. As I sit here wondering just what on earth happened to 2019, it’s already time to start looking towards a new year, and more specifically, the prestigious 2020 Sundance Film Festival, which runs in Park City, Utah from January 23rd through February 2nd. As always, Sundance’s lineup of Midnight movies looks to be killer, but there are several other films that are playing the festival in different categories that look to be something genre fans might get excited over, too.
Here’s a rundown of the horror films hitting Sundance next month, as well as a handful of genre-adjacent projects to keep on your radars for 2020.
Midnight Selections:
Amulet / United Kingdom — Tomaz, an ex-soldier now homeless in London, is offered a place to stay at a decaying house, inhabited by a young woman and her dying mother. As he starts to fall for Magda, Tomaz cannot ignore his suspicion that...

HBO is bringing Joss Whedon to the world of pay cable television, ordering the “Avengers” director’s science-fiction series, “The Nevers.”
“The Nevers” is an epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and on a mission that might change the world.
Whedon serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer, the first TV series he will helm since Fox’s short-lived “Dollhouse” in 2009-2010.
“We have long been fans of the incredibly talented and prolific Joss Whedon and we can’t think of a better project than ‘The Nevers’ with which to welcome him to the HBO family,” HBO programming president Casey Bloys said in a statement. “We look forward to meeting the strange, multifaceted characters of ‘The Nevers,’ to learn their stories, see them in action and share them with our viewers. Joss Whedon is set to help develop and executive produce a new half-hour comedy series for Freeform called Pippa Smith: Grown-Up Detective. This is the first project that Whedon has attached himself to since he dropped out as the director of Batgirl.
The new series was created by Siobhan Thompson and Rebecca Drysdale, and it's described as "a dark comedy that follows Pippa Smith, a twenty-something who played a former kid sleuth on television, as she deals with relationships, addiction and being too dang old for the detecting game. Each episode, Pippa solves a new case, while unraveling a bigger mystery and attempting to navigate a messy personal life."
That sounds like the kind of project that Whedon would have some fun with. Regardless, of his failed attempt to give fans a great Justice League movie, I'm still a fan of his and I'm looking forward to seeing what other...

There's no money to be made in comedy. We see that in the second episode of Baskets, where sad-clown funnyman Chip faces eviction from the motel he's been staying in if he can't dig up some extra cash. Working for sub-sub-minimum wage at the Bakersfield rodeo just doesn't cut it these days. If Chip can't come up with a solution, he may have to resort to unsavory options, like moving in with his mother or (shudder) Martha. Are the show's makers drawing a thematic line here? There seems to be a parallel between Chip's financial troubles and the real-life efforts to make Baskets a commercially viable endeavor. Maybe that's writer Rebecca Drysdale's way of apologizing for the rampant product placement in "Trainee," only the series' second episode. We got hints in the pilot that both Costco and Arby's would factor into storylines (the logo on Martha's car, Chip's references...

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Lena Dunham’s “Girls” are taking on the women’s movement. The problem with parody is simple: You have to make sure people know you're doing it, and you have to make sure that you're not jumping into a genre that's already oversaturated with similar spoofs, satires and what-have-yous. And that's kinda the problem with Lesbian Cops. (Writer's Aside: Out of curiosity, after watching the first episode, I googled "Lesbian Cops." Thirty minutes later, I turned Safesearch on and tried again. There were plenty of books, some Rizzoli & Isles commentary, and then this show.) Clearly trying to ape and skewer the tough-guy cop shows and movies of the 60's and 70's, along with what you'd find googling about without Safesearch on, Lesbian Cops is all about being big. Big movements, big acting, big, big, big. Death Wish was thrown out as the creators' prime inspiration, which I completely see. From the Lesbian Cops website the premise goes, "Detective Tori Jones (Gena Shaw...

Nicol Paone is, quite literally, a funny person. The star of Logo's The Big Gay Sketch Show can be seen in Judd Aptow's Funny People playing opposite Adam Sandler as his character's sister. Although the film isn't a straight-up comedy that showcases Paone's formidable talents for funny and impersonation, her fans can catch her on the occasional stage, on funnyordie.com, and Bgss, Season 3, premiering in early 2010.
I love interviewing people, but hate transcribing. To solve that problem, I asked Nicol if she was up for an experiment: An interview via an instant message chat. She was game and away we went.
