From the roar of the T-Rex in “Jurassic Park” to the off-kilter, three-dimensional way Barry (Adam Sandler) travels through an off-kilter aural world in “Punch-Drunk Love,” to sound becoming the principal storyteller amidst the chaos of the D-Day invasion in “Saving Private Ryan,” Gary Rydstrom’s place on the Mount Rushmore of sound designers is secure. It’s a career that stretches back 30-plus years, resulting in 18 Oscar nominations and won seven wins, for projects ranging from “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” to “Titanic.”
Rydstrom’s most productive and longest collaboration has been with Steven Spielberg, but his most long-lasting impact was making Pixar’s digital animation come to life. Rydstrom started his career at Skywalker Sound, which ultimately led him to work on Pixar’s earliest achievements. In 1986, John Lasseter’s first experiment was animating the bouncing lamp in “Luxo, Jr.,” but it was Rydstrom’s springy creak that brought it life.

On Friday, March 13, Disney will release the live action version of Cinderella from director Kenneth Branagh.
The original animated movie opened on February 15, 1950 to universal acclaim and 65 years later, Cinderella has become one of studio’s most treasured titles.
Branagh has once again turned to the Scottish composer Patrick Doyle for the score. The album features original music by Doyle marking the eleventh time he has teamed with Branagh.
In 1989, the director commissioned Doyle to compose the score for Henry V and they have subsequently collaborated on numerous pictures, including Dead Again, Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet, As You Like It and Thor, and most recently Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
Doyle scored Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes for 20th Century Fox and Brave for Disney Pixar, which was awarded Best Original Composition for Film at the International Music and Sound Awards.

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has approved the rules for next year's Oscars, with the most significant change affecting the Animated Feature Film category. In that category, a new rule designates a maximum of two award recipients, one of whom must have a producer credit. "The director and/or key creative individual shall continue to be a recipient, and in the circumstance of a two-person team with shared and equal director credit, a third statuette may be awarded," The Academy noted. This year, a film with two director credits -- "Brave" (shared by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman) -- won the Oscar, and both Andrews and Chapman took a statuette. However, producer Katherine Sarafian did not. Previously announced rules changes for the 86th Academy Awards include allowing members to see the nominated documentary shorts and foreign language films either at a theatrical screening or on DVD.

4th Update: An eclectic mix of current and former moguls, executives, producers, directors, and of course actors attended the marquee pre-Oscar parties as well as famed artists, museum directors, fashion designers, music icons, and star athletes. Barry Diller’s luncheon for Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter Saturday was smaller than usual. That night, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s ‘Night Before’ Oscar MPTF fundraiser avoided a union picket line. The agency parties dominated Thursday and Friday nights. CAA‘s was bigger than in past years when 200-300 guests crowded Bryan Lourd’s home. This time about 500 gathered at luxe Greystone Mansion for Old Hollywood glamour with men dressed ascots and women given gardenia corsages. WME‘s was held at Ari Emanuel’s home as usual and UTA‘s at Jim Berkus’ house again. ICM Partners‘ was held at the home of agent Hildy Gottlieb. Few of these names need introductions...

If you want to stand out on the red carpet, red hair isn’t always the easiest accessory.
However misguided it may be, ginger locks are frequently regarded as somewhat of a hinderance. Terms like clashing and matching suddenly start getting thrown around — a sartorial burden that doesn’t regularly afflict ravens, brunettes, blondes, whites, or grays.
But this awards season proves that any “restrictions” on options for the scarlet-haired can be broken, with three striking redheads making their fashion presence felt.
And the most striking of all isn’t even a real person.

Recently, I met up for an hour-long lunch in Los Angeles with Mark Andrews and Katherine Sarafian, the DGA-nominated co-director (with Brenda Chapman) and PGA-nominated producer, respectively, of Pixar's animated feature Brave. The summer blockbuster won the best animated feature film Golden Globe last month and the best animated film BAFTA Award this month, and is nominated for -- and stands a good chance of winning -- the best animated feature Oscar, which will be presented on Feb. 24. During our time together we talked about their lives, careers and the challenges they faced while making the first

Oh yes it still hurts that Ben Affleck was not given a Best Director Oscar nomination, yet his fantastic film "Argo" continues its ascension to Oscar glory! The film took home the top prize at the Producers Guild of America Awards taking home the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.
So guess which film will win the Oscar Best Picture? Yup, it will be "Argo!" Why? Well, Hollywood really loves movies about them and "Argo" is about a movie of a fake movie in order to help free some Americans trapped in Iran during the hostage crisis.
And, the PGA award is a significant Academy Awards precursor. Only seven times in 24 years has the PGA winner failed to win a Best Picture Oscar. So "Argo" has a strong chance.
I'm also happy that "Searching for Sugar Man" won the Documentary category, and not so happy...

Daniel Craig's third outing as James Bond nominated for prize traditionally regarded as Academy Awards signpost
The latest James Bond film, Skyfall, could be making a late run for recognition at this year's Oscars after being named among the top 10 films of 2012 by the Producers Guild of America (PGA).
The guild also named awards season frontrunners Argo, Les Miserables, Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook in its list of nominees for the Darryl F Zanuck award for outstanding producer of theatrical motion pictures.
Most of the other contenders have also been feted by various critics' groups in the runup to the Academy Awards at the Dolby theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on 24 February. Quentin Tarantino's blood-spattered spaghetti western homage, Django Unchained, is starting to look a good bet for Oscar nominations after picking up another nod in the wake of its five Golden Globe nominations last month.

Finally, some love for the animated movie about the kid who sees dead people!
Dissed by the Golden Globes and other official accolade-givers so far, "ParaNorman" has emerged as the number-one champion of the Producers Guild Awards nominations. Then again, we're not sure how much credit we should give to an organization that also nominated "Rise of the Guardians" in the same category, but still, it's the thought that counts.
Non-animated nominees include "Skyfall" (also oddly shunned by the Golden Globes, except for that terrific Adele theme song) and a bunch of predictable choices such as "Les Miserables," "Lincoln," "Argo" and "Zero Dark Thirty." Meanwhile, it's good to see the "Django" love spreading, and any further support for "Life of Pi" and "Moonrise Kingdom" is okay in our book.

The Producers Guild of America has announced its nominations for best productions of the year, in what is often looked to as an indicator for how the Academy Awards may go.
The guild selected 10 films — most of them common guesses for the group that could make up the Oscar list of the best films of 2012: Argo, Lincoln, Les Misérables, among others.
The one surprise: Skyfall. No 007 film has ever cracked the Best Picture list, but if this nomination is any indication, that could change when the Oscar nods are revealed Jan. 10.

Having just arrived the night before, co-director Mark Andrews and producer Katherine Sarafian were on the final leg of their press commitments after showing their new film, Pixar’s Brave, off to receptive audiences in France, Italy, Japan and Canada.
In production since 2004, when the idea was first pitched by original director Brenda Chapman, the film – then titled The Bear And The Bow – saw the filmmakers travel to Scotland for a research trip to the Outer Hebrides. Armed with thousands of photographs, the production team returned to their offices in San Francisco and began work on the project in earnest. Before it would reach screens, however, the team behind Brave would experience a directorial reshuffle. Cue Mark Andrews.

Back in June, as the 66th Edinburgh International Film Festival was coming to a close, HeyUGuys sat down with two of the stars of the festival’s highly anticipated closing film, Pixar’s Brave.
In a quiet conference room on the second floor of Edinburgh’s grand Balmoral Hotel, Robbie Coltrane and Kevin McKidd – who play Lord Dingwall and practically the entire MacGuffin patriarchy in the film, respectively – were discussing musicals. Having last seen The Producers, Coltrane was singing the praises of star Nathan Lane, while McKidd spoke fondly of a recent outing to see Peter and the Star Catcher. Asked if he had ever been tempted to take to the stage, Coltrane replied that he’d never been asked. Actually, come to think of it…

Brave producer Katherine Sarafian has said that it was a "natural decision" to pay tribute to late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in Pixar's latest movie. Jobs, who passed away last year after suffering from pancreatic cancer, was instrumental in Pixar's early success, serving as chief executive at the animation studio up until the firm's acquisition by Disney.
Pixar's latest film Brave, about a flame-haired Scottish princess who defies her mother's wishes to marry, honours Jobs during the end credits. Sarafian said of the tribute: "It was a very natural decision, given the timing. Steve passed while we were finishing the film. "In terms of changing our fates, as human beings, and as a studio, he made this studio with John Lasseter and Ed Catmull as a founder. "His edict to us all through the years was to (more)...

The creators of Wall-e and Up once had an interactive division. Why did they close it, and does it matter?
Shortly after playing through Brave: The Video Game, the companion piece for the new Pixar movie, I was given the chance to ask the film's director and producer a few questions. One was right at the head of the queue. Why does Pixar, a studio that creates brilliant movies and clearly has impeccable standards, content itself with farming out the interactive side to third parties?
"We try," says Brave's producer, Katherine Sarafian. "We worked quite closely with the game developers [Behaviour Interactive] and Disney Interactive because we want it to be great but, more importantly, we want it to feel like the movie even if it can't quite look like the movie.
"The game expands the world, so it's very important to us that any new characters or environments in there feel like Brave,...

I was recently able to sit down for a chat with Disney Pixar’s Brave director Mark Andrews and producer Katherine Sarafian for Blogomatic3000. Having been thoroughly impressed with their labour of love (have a look of my review for specifics), there were loads of questions I was eager to ask. However, due to time limitations, I was only able to raise a handful, but Andrews and Sarafian were quick to respond with an enthusiasm inherent to those who truly love their jobs.
Though focusing predominately on Brave and how they brought the film together, as a big fan of The Incredibles (which both Andrews and Sarafian worked on), my final question had to be about where things stand with a follow-up to Pixar’s super-est of heroes. So, read on for a peek inside two of the minds that make up the most innovative studio in film-making today.

Fans of Disney.Pixar.s feature films love to scour the screen in search of the Hidden Gems the filmmakers sneak into each film: Wall.E.s explorations uncover a Mike Wazowski antenna ball, paying homage to Monsters, Inc., and in Up, the classic Luxo Jr. ball can be seen in the girl.s bedroom as Carl Fredricksen.s house flies by her window. Disney.Pixar.s epic action adventure Brave features a few such gems, two of which are revealed here:
Ancient Delivery . The Witch, an eccentric crone disguised as a woodcarver specializing in whittling wooden bear figurines and conjuring haphazard spells, showcases her mysterious and inexplicable knowledge of the future with a carved figurine of the infamous Pizza Planet truck, an iconic delivery vehicle that.s appeared in nearly every full-length feature film from Pixar Animation Studios since 1995.s Toy Story.

A new type of heroine is hitting our screens. It's progress, but does a girl always have to be a princess to get the starring role?
When I was a little girl, I used to twirl around and around in my bedroom, stopping only to deflect imaginary bullets with my nonexistent indestructible cuffs. There was never any question about which kind of Underoos I wanted: I was a Wonder Woman girl. What I didn't know then is that my first role model belonged to a very rare tribe: the princess who is also a bona fide action hero. Or, as I like to call her, the Action Princess. This month, their tiny ranks swell by two big-budget badasses: Snow White (of Snow White and the Huntsman), and Princess Merida (of Brave, which owned the Us box office this past weekend).

Hi guys! Melissa here with a Brave new tale. This week I had the chance to attend the Brave press day Monday, June 18th at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Hollywood, California. Kelly Macdonald (Merida), Kevin McKidd (Lord MacGruffin and Yound MacGruffing), and Craig Ferguson (Lord Macintosh) were all present, as well as Mark Andrews (Director) and Katherine Sarafian (Producer). Below, you will find the Q&A from Kelly Macdonald, Kevin McKidd, and Craig Ferguson.

Pixar's new movie "Brave," which hits theaters on Friday, could quite possibly have the largest share of redheaded characters of any major studio release in the history of color cinema.
The movie's protagonist, Merida, has red hair, and so do her three mischievous little brothers, who are known only as "The Triplets." All four have inherited their coloring from their father King Fergus, who literally reigns over the mythical Scotland of the movie. And the large-group shots in the movie always include an unusually generous smattering of auburn manes.
But if any company were going to produce such an enthusiastic ode to gingerdom, it was bound to be Disney's Pixar. Since releasing "Toy Story 2" in 1999, the studio has had an unprecedented proportion of redheaded characters in its movies. Every movie the studio has made -- aside from those, like "Cars" and "A Bug's Life," that are not about humans...

Will children be able to relate to the character's strange accent in Brave, Pixar's new animated 3D adventure? Brave directors Mark Andrews and producer Katherine Sarafian aren't worried about the Scottish English accent being a distraction for American audiences.
Classic Pixar characters from Nemo, Woody, to Lightning McQueen have all been voiced with American accents. In Brave, not only are we introduced to Pixar's first female heroine, but Merida, the lead character, is also the first Pixar character to be voiced in a foreign accent.
Given Brave's setting in the highlands of Scotlands, it only makes sense for Brave's animated characters to speak in their native tongue typical of the region, but Hollywood traditionally shies away from using the location's vernacular in favor of familiarity. Pixar's film Ratatouille, for example, takes place in France,

When you think of the filmmakers and artists who work at Pixar it’s not hard to envy their jobs. Not only do they get to work for one of the most respected movie studios – animated or otherwise – in the world, but they also get to tap into their inner child almost every, single day in order to make their dreams come to life on the big screen.
That’s not to say it’s not a whole lot of work along the way. Director Mark Andrews and Producer Katherine Sarafian know all about that. It took over 6 years for the concept of their latest Pixar gem to make its way from a kernel of an idea to a finished film set to delight audiences the way it did when they were in Toronto to present Brave at its Canadian Premiere.

The landscape in which "Brave," Pixar's latest film, unfolds is not merely a dream conjured by the studio's talented animators, but a lovingly recreation of a singular landscape. In fact, Pixar sent two teams to Scotland starting in 2006 to explore the country's castles, glens, forests and coastline.
Many aspects of "Brave" ultimately came out of those trips. The will o' the wisps that the film's heroine, Merida, finds awe-inspiring, come from a combination of Scottish legend and strange physical phenomenon. The film's producer, Katherine Sarafian, explained to The Huffington Post that "there is also bog gas in the region that disappears as you get closer." Movie magic was born of swamp vampor.
The DunBroch family seal is also partially lifted from a Celtic legend that, to rule the kingdom, you had to gather four magical items that each had powers.

Putting an inventive spin on the often tumultuous relationship between teenage daughters and their mothers, Pixar brings us Brave, where feisty Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald), she of independent spirit and equally wild hair, fights with her mother about most things but really can't see eye-to-eye when it comes to a marriage that she doesn't feel interested in or ready for.
We sat down with director Mark Andrews, who wrote the script with writer-director Brenda Chapman, and producer Katherine Sarafian to find out where this Scottish tale of rebellion and tradition came from and if animating Merida's wild red locks was an animator's dream or nightmare.
Watch the interview after the jump before Brave hits Cineplex theatres June 22.

Chicago – Director Mark Andrews is a part of the one of the most important creative brain trusts of the last twenty years — the men and women at Pixar. He was one of the story supervisors for Brad Bird’s “The Incredibles” and took over the directorial reins from Brenda Chapman on this week’s “Brave.” He sat down with Producer Katherine Sarafian to discuss his new film, a Scottish fable about a headstrong young woman named Princess Merida (Kelly Macdonald) and the problems she faces when she asks a witch (Julie Walters) to change her mom (Emma Thompson). I’ve been lucky enough to speak a number of Pixar pioneers and they are all engaging, passionate people — just what you’d expect from such a landmark studio.
