Streamer and distributor Mubi has acquired Ali Abbasi’s Cannes Film Festival competition title “Holy Spider” for the U.K., Ireland, Latin America (excluding Mexico) and Malaysia.
The film will be released theatrically followed by an exclusive Mubi streaming release.
The film follows family man Saeed as he embarks on his own religious quest — to “cleanse” the holy Iranian city of Mashhad of immoral and corrupt street prostitutes. After murdering several women, he grows ever more desperate about the lack of public interest in his divine mission.
It stars Mehdi Bajestani, Zar Amir Ebrahimi, Arash Ashtiani, Forouzan Jamshidnejad, Alice Rahimi, Sara Fazilat and Sina Parvaneh.
The Variety review of the film praised it for its “laudable instinct for humanizing and dimensionalizing the victims and their families, who are poignantly depicted despite the brevity of their screen time.”

Ryan Reynolds & Samuel L. Jackson Sequel ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ Moves Earlier In The Summer
After Disney plopped its Ryan Reynolds action comedy Free Guy from 20th Century Studios on August 13, a week before Lionsgate’s sequel The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard which also stars Reynolds, it stood to reason the latter would move. The new date for the Reynolds-Samuel L. Jackson sequel, which also stars Salma Hayek, is June 16.
The announcement was made Monday by Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate’s president of worldwide distribution. The sequel, on its new date, arrives the weekend after Warner Bros/HBO Max’s feature musical In the Heights, and the weekend prior to Universal’s F9 on June 25. Also opening the weekend of June 16-18 is Focus Features’ Edgar Wright-directed feature documentary The Sparks Brothers.
Schwartz said, “This is the kind of summer action film that delivers even more comedy and more thrilling action than the first film – and it’s perfect for fans new to the franchise as well.

A24 said Monday that it acquired U.S. rights to the Ninja Thyberg-directed 2021 Sundance Film Festival drama Pleasure. This was a film that had been announced as a Cannes title for 2020 before the fest was canceled because of Covid, and made its debut as part of virtual Sundance.
The drama stars Sofia Kappel as an aspiring porn star who arrives from Sweden determined to become a big star. While the drama’s point is to recognize the rape culture and degradation that women are put through in that line of business in Los Angeles, the film itself is about as close to a porn film as any that has been released theatrically in recent memory, with complete nudity and simulated sex that is shocking.
A24 will release the full uncensored version alongside a new R-Rated version later this year.
The film is produced by Eliza Jones, Markus Waltå, and Erik Hemmendorff.

Sonet made a name for itself producing mainstream arthouse features which often appealed to audiences as much as critics. Features such as Richard Hobert's acclaimed drama Everybody Loves Alice (2003) and Kay Pollak's Oscar-nominated As It Is In Heaven (2004) caught the attention of regional powerhouse Svensk Filmindustri, which acquired Sonet in 2007. Possne stayed on as CEO and produced and co-produced numerous titles under the Sonet label at Svensk, including Patrik Aged 1.5 (2008), Lasse

After the success of Stieg Larsson's Millennium series (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, etc.), one can hardly blame booksellers or filmmakers for running back to Sweden. The land of beautiful people, hot accents (Skarsgård!), pancakes and meatballs also seems to be a hotbed of thrillers (Three Seconds) just itching to be translated to film.
Lasse Hallström (Chocolat, The Cider House Rules, The Shipping News, My Life as a Dog) will be taking on the Lars Kepler best-selling thriller, The Hypnotist. The book follows Detective Joona Linna investigating a triple homicide. After witnessing the murder of his family, the only survivor -- a young boy -- is so traumatized he cannot recount what happened. A renowned and retired psychologist is convinced to help; he agrees to hypnotize the boy to search his subconscious for clues. The story is said to be filled with unexpected twists and turns and the...

Oscar-nominated director Lasse Hallstrom ("The Cider House Rules," "Chocolat," "Dear John") is set to direct his first Swedish film in 24 years with an adaptation of the best selling crime novel "The Hypnotist" by Lars Kepler says The Hollywood Reporter.
The film is the first in a planned franchise based on the Detective Joona Linna series, arguably the most successful and/or well-known Swedish crime novel series worldwide outside of Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy (ie. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series) and Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander books.
In this novel, Linna investigates a grisly triple homicide where the only survivor, a young boy, is too traumatized to testify. Linna convinces a famous psychologist, against his better judgment, to hypnotize the boy, setting off a terrifying chain of events.
Hallstrom will begin shooting this winter for a planned 2012 release in Sweden. Borje Hansson, Bertil Ohlsson and Peter Possne will produce.
