Duane Eddy, one of rock’s first guitar heroes and an idol of George Harrison, Jeff Beck, John Fogerty, Dan Auerbach, and many other guitar-slingers who followed, died Sunday at his home in Franklin, Tennessee. He was 86. A source close to the family confirmed Eddy’s death to Rolling Stone.
Released in 1958, Eddy’s “Rebel-’Rouser” wasn’t the first instrumental hit, but it was one of the most arresting. Arriving just a few years into the birth of rock & roll, “Rebel-’Rouser” announced that the raucous new genre was...

If you turn on classic-rock radio anywhere in America and listen for more than a few minutes, you’re likely to hear a Foreigner song. “Cold as Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Feels Like the First Time,” “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” “Urgent,” and “I Want to Know What Love Is” topped the charts in the Seventies and Eighties, and really never went away. But rock critics never understood their appeal. “I like rock and roll so much that I catch myself getting off on ‘Hot Blooded,’ a typical piece of...

In the last few years, Cj Strock, a talent agent who worked with the later incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band, faced an unusual dilemma. As seen in catalog and merch sales, a market still existed for the Allmans, their quintessentially Southern rock & roll, and their improvisational live shows, but the band itself didn’t exist: They formally gave their last performances in 2014, and Gregg Allman died of liver cancer three years later.
With an eye toward introducing new fans to the band, Strock had an idea — essentially a new Allmans.

For a second, it’s like 2005 has barged into the pub demanding respect. Richard Archer, singer with Staines’ indie rock massive Hard-Fi, arrives at a Thames-side Richmond boozer with his bright blue eyes flashing and the jaw-length hair he sported pre-pandemic shorn back to his classic indie bovver-boy cut. He’s as energised as he ever was when leading some of the most raucous gig scenes this writer saw that entire disrespected decade, when entire Academies would be bouncing right back to the (drunk dry) bar to clock-off clubland punk anthems “Hard To Beat” and “Living For The Weekend”. He was champion of the skint but shot-crazed, a roaring mouthpiece for the left-behind street stars of surveillance culture Britain.
The haircut is appropriate: it’s now 17 years since the band’s debut album Stars of CCTV ram-raided the UK charts, but Hard-Fi are undergoing a Semtex blast of popularity.

The life of Viv Albertine, the punk musician and guitarist of The Slits, is getting the TV treatment after Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley’s Number 9 Films and Rachael Horovitz’ West Fourth Films teamed to acquire rights to her memoirs.
Albertine has published two autobiographical books, Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys in 2014, and To Throw Away Unopened in 2018. They chronicled how she was a founding member of all-girl punk band The Slits in the late 1970s, becoming a close friend of both Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash. In 1976, she helped form The Flowers of Romance with Sid Vicious and Susie Souix. Alongside music, she has worked as a director and also collaborated with Joanna Hogg, composing the soundtrack for Arichpelago, and starring in Exhibition.
The producers said they acquired the rights in a competitive situation, and will now develop a limited TV series from the material.

The Avalanches have dropped two new songs, “Wherever You Go” and “Reflecting Light,” from their upcoming as-yet-untitled album. Their third LP will be the follow-up to 2016’s Wildflower, which was their first album in 16 years.
The Jamie xx co-produced “Wherever You Go” features vocals from Neneh Cherry and Clypso and piano from Mick Jones. It also samples The Voyager Golden Record, the 12-inch gold-plated copper disk launched into space in 1977, which houses sounds and images that were chosen “to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth,” per NASA.

Looking back at some of the strangest cameos in film and TV history, we were struck by how many of them were by musicians. It makes sense. After all, musicians are already out of place among actors on a TV or film set. What they bring to the table is different from what actors bring, in terms of star quality, charisma, self-expression and established personae. If you’re familiar with both the musician’s work and the characters in a movie or TV show (and the actors who play them...

Brian Howe, who was Bad Company’s lead singer for eight years and sang on a mid-’80s Ted Nugent’s album, died Wednesday of a heart attack while en route to a hospital near his home in Lake Placid, Fl. He was 66.
England native Howe took over for original Bad Company vocalist Paul Rodgers in 1986 and remained with the band for eight years. Recruited by Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke on a recommendation by Foreigner’s Mick Jones, Howe sang on and toured behind four of the band’s studio albums — three of which went gold — and its 1993 live disc. During his tenure, the group racked up eight top 10 singles on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, including the No. 1 hits “Holy Water” (1990) and “How About That” (1992) — the latter topping that chart for six weeks.
Before joining the British hard rock band, Howe sang lead on Nugent’s 1984 album Penetrator.

This month marks the 40th anniversary of the Clash’s London Calling. Well, sort of. The album came out in England on December 14th, 1979, but didn’t cross the Atlantic to America until January 1980. That’s just a matter of weeks, but it’s the reason that NME has called it one of the single best albums of the Seventies and Rolling Stone labeled it the best album of the Eighties.
It’s a rare album that can considered among the best works of two separate decades, especially ones as...

Billy Joel rattling off historic names and events most people under 30 have never heard of hardly seemed like the formula for a hit song, especially in 1989 when the charts were dominated by the likes of Poison, Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, Debbie Gibson, and New Kids on the Block. But it was 30 years ago this week that his history lesson/rock song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” knocked Milli Vanilli’s “Blame It on the Rain” off the top spot to become the number-one song on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Reggae and punk icon Don Letts reminisces about the emergence of Jamaican music in the U.K. in a clip from the documentary Rudeboy: The Story of Trojan Records. Following a year on the film festival circuit, the film is now available on digital streaming services.
“Black and white kids were united through their love of music and style; invariably, a lot of that music was the Trojan stuff,” Letts said of the famed Jamaican label that boasted artists like Jimmy Cliff, the Upsetters, the Maytals, Desmond Dekker and more.

The Flaming Lips have released a colorful new video for their song “Giant Baby,” off their latest album King’s Mouth: Music and Songs.
The clip, directed by frontman Wayne Coyne, features an introduction by Fred Armisen and a guest appearance by The Clash’s Mick Jones, who also narrates portions of the album. Coyne and the band are surrounded by rainbow-colored tubing lights that leave lingering impressions on the short film’s staticky editing. The whole effect is as trippy as you’d expect from a Flaming Lips video.

In a new edition of “First Drafts of Rock,” Jimmy Fallon and Kevin Bacon have revised The Clash’s 1982 hit “Should I Stay or Should I Go.” In the segment, which has previously included versions of “American Woman” and “Free Fallin’,” the pair dress up as the punk band to perform their take on the song on vocals and guitar.
In this version the lyrics are slightly more simplistic, with Fallon (as Joe Strummer) crooning, “If I stay I will be here/ But if I go I won’t be...

It’s been a while since the Flaming Lips have returned to their classic formula of song-driven alternative psych-rock. King’s Mouth, an elaborate concept LP featuring spoken-word narration from the Clash’s Mick Jones, is, in some senses, a back to basics return to form for the group. There are a few moments of unexpectedly traditionalist beauty: the album’s lovely closing one-two punch of “Mouth of the King” and “How Can a Head” finds frontman Wayne Coyne falling back in love with the type of minimalist songcraft and...

The Flaming Lips tapped the Clash’s Mick Jones to serve as narrator on their surreal new song, “Giant Baby,” from their new album, King’s Mouth.
The track, which was released over the weekend, opens with Jones recounting the story of an oversized toddler obsessed with outer space over a serene melody that periodically dips into something stranger. The song’s psychedelic twinkle continues to move and shift as Wayne Coyne croons softly, “One night, I saw your face up in the sky/In a cloud across the moon,...

As Mick Jones tells it, the origins of a jukebox musical featuring the songs of his band Foreigner date back over 40 years, when he found himself stranded in an airport lounge in Atlanta with none other than Diana Ross. “She had just done The Wiz, and said, ‘You know, you have a great song that would really lend itself to a musical,’” Jones recalls. “She said, ‘That song “Juke Box Hero” could be a great stage presentation.’ I said, ‘Wow.’ That song is a pretty ballsy rocker, so for her...
