Sanjeev Kumar won 2 National Award and was nominated for 14 Filmfare Awards, thrice as Best Supporting Actor and the remaining as Best Actor. He won the awards twice as Best Actor and once as Best Supporting Actor.

He is the 3rd Actor after Ashok Kumar and Utpal Dutt to win National Award in Hindi Cinema and among first five Actors to win in Pan India.

He is also the only Actor with 2 National Award till 1983 in Hindi Cinema. He shared it with Naseeruddin and Om Puri till his death.

His 9 Roles in Naya Din Nai Raat remained a Record till 2008 when Kamal Hassan broke it by enacting 10 roles in Dasavataram.

He was directed by Satyajit Ray in Shatranj Ke Khilari that was screened in Berlin International Film Festival and was nominated for Golden Bear. It was India's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 51st Academy Awards, but did not receive a nomination.
