Everybody seems to love Harry Styles. The 28-year-old British heartthrob ,who initially scored huge success as a member of the boy band One Direction before going solo six years ago, won a Grammy last year for best pop solo performance for “Watermelon Sugar.” And he’s up for a total of six this year for his hit single “As It Was” and album “Harry’s House.” And it’s hard not to miss footage of his energetic concerts filled with screaming women of all ages on TikTok.
Though there were two One Direction concert films, Styles has shied away from rock and rolling on the silver screen rather appearing as a World War II soldier in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed 2017 “Dunkirk” and starring in two high-profile films this fall: Olivia Wilde’s “Stepford Wives”-style thriller “Don’t Worry Darling” and the romantic drama “My Policeman.” In the later, he gives...

Claes Bang has terrified audiences across with the world with his spirited portrayal of Count Dracula for the BBC. Now he’s moving closer to the present with his latest film The Burnt Orange Heresy in which he stars with Elizabeth Debicki and Donald Sutherland. Steven Goldman sat down with the actor to talk about his latest film and what’s next.
Claes Bang has got a thing for art – at least as far as the movies go.
The Danish actor first captured the global spotlight as a crisis-juggling museum curator in The Square, taking top honors in Cannes in 2017. Last year he was on the trail of Nazi-looted art in The Last Vermeer, which premiered at TIFF. This year, his focus shifts back to contemporary abstracts with the sexy neo-noir thriller, The Burnt Orange Heresy.

Elizabeth Debicki has had a varied eclectic career, all the more remarkable considering she is still only 30 years old. With roles on in Television series like the John Le Carre smash The Night Manager and blockbusters including Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2, The Great Gatsby, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and her forthcoming role as Princess Diana in the fifth Series of The Crown.
To coincide with the digital release of The Burnt Orange Heresy (available to Rent on Digital today) opposite Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, it seems an appropriate time to revisit some of her finest roles to date.
Debicki’s role as Jed in The Night Manager has proved to be one of her breakout roles and certainly one that has garnered acclaim. Acting opposite heavyweights Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Tom Hollander and Olivia Colman, Debicki more than holds her own as the feisty girlfriend of arms dealer...

Emerging Italian helmer Claudio Giovannesi, who made a splash in Berlin with his prizewinning Neapolitan teen mob drama “Piranhas,” is set to direct immigration epic “Vita,” set in New York’s early 20th century Little Italy.
Based on Melania Mazzucco’s novel by the same title, winner of Italy’s prestigious Strega Prize, “Vita” is set in 1903 when two kids, a girl named Vita and a boy named Diamante, disembark alone in New York.
“Vita,” which means life in Italian, is grounded in authentic documentation, based on the true story of Mazzucco’s ancestors. The book was published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in the U.S.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

I know that 2020 has felt like an eternity for a number of reasons, but how is it possible that this never-ending year has given us not one but two lackluster movies about art starring Claes Bang?

Smaller distributors could be the biggest beneficiaries of exhibitors’ newfound flexibility.
Tim Richards, founder and CEO of the UK-based multiplex chain Vue Cinemas, has said the exhibitor will be “flexible with windows” as the industry scrambles to respond to the near-total absence of US blockbusters at the theatrical box office in 2020.
“We will absolutely be flexible with windows,” said Richards. “It’s probably a discussion that is long overdue but it’s a discussion we are having right now. We are willing to consider reducing windows.

After a successful run on last year’s film festival circuit, “The Burnt Orange Heresy” was expected to be one of the most anticipated dramas of 2020. However, the film was released in theaters by Sony Pictures Classics just days before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the entire theatrical industry. Thankfully, the film is now available on all home formats and people can watch Donald Sutherland, Claes Bang, and Elizabeth Debicki in this star-studded film.

It’s Sunday, time for a Top 10 report — only, there’s no way to provide a credible chart. For one thing, much of the list would be library titles that often don’t report grosses until later. For another, Warner Bros.’ much-promoted 10th anniversary re-release of Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” — a significant player with IMAX and 70mm dates — is absent. Warners went so far as to not only not report an estimate, but also to block grosses reported by theaters.
Warners says it’s not reporting because “Inception” is a library title, but the studio is allowing other library titles to show Comscore results.
“Unhinged,” the first release from Solstice Studios, reported an estimate of over $4 million in 1,823 theaters. That would be a per-theater average of around $2,200. Those figures come with fewer than half of the first-run theaters open in North America, and only drive-ins in New York and Los Angeles.

“The Crown” just got another major talent added to its fifth and sixth seasons. Even ahead of a premiere date for Season 4, Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki has just been cast as Princess Diana in the Emmy-winning Netflix’s series’ Seasons 5 and 6. Netflix shared the news via Twitter, including a statement from Debicki. See below.
“Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many,” Elizabeth Debicki said. “Her actions live in the hearts of so many. It is my true privilege and honor to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one.”
Series creator Peter Morgan originally intended for the now-extended series to end with Season 5. For the upcoming fourth season, Emma Corrin will play a young Diana, who was born in 1961. If Claes Bang didn’t exist so suavely before our eyes, you’d say they don’t make movie stars like him any more: debonair, mature but with sparky wit, and possessed of a flexible accent that is at once evasive and distinctly European. Since breaking out aged 50 in Rubin Östlund’s “The Square,” he could have exclusively cashed in his raised profile on the kind of generically “foreign” villain parts and Europudding filler that tend to await such actors these days, yet he seems to be finding throwback vehicles to match his elegantly out-of-time stardom. First came the slippery, well-dressed art-scene noir “The Burnt Orange Heresy” and World War 2 counterfeiting drama “The Last Vermeer”; now, in a comparably neo-Hitchcockian vein, comes “The Bay of Silence,” in which his coolly compelling man-adrift charisma — backed by sturdy support from Olga Kurylenko and Brian Cox — keeps a splintering mystery together.

Claes Bang plays a man who does something highly inconceivable and goes off the rails because of his decisions in Giuseppe Capotondi’s drama, “The Burnt Orange Heresy.” But the actor doesn’t necessarily think his character is a “psychopath or maniac.”
“I don’t think he knows at the beginning of the film what’s going to happen three days later,” Bang told TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. “I don’t think he’s a psychopath or maniac in that sense. It’s sort of what happens that drives him where he ends up going and I think that’s far more interesting… With this script, it was not so much down to me having to come up with stuff for this to be real — it was really shooting the scenes as they were written.”

Who’s ready for a bit, no lots, of culture? No, well let’s sweeten the deal. Yes, you’ll be in the world of odd artists and their deep-pocketed patrons, but the paintings are on the walls of a swanky mansion over in Italy. Hmm, some refinement and a virtual “vacay”. And who are our guides? That’s where the romance sneaks in via a most photogenic pair of European rising stars. Oh, and they’re backed up by a veteran film actor (this is his seventh decade on screen) and an honest to gosh, no debate about it, rock and roll god. Somehow this quartet is connected by the piece known as The Burnt Orange Heresy.

‘Babyteeth.’
Universal Pictures’ dramedy The King of Staten Island continued its reign at Australian cinemas last weekend as ticket sales slumped, starved of new releases.
Given the depressed state of the market, Shannon Murphy’s Babyteeth, the bittersweet comedy adapted by Rita Kalnejais from her play, launched reasonably well on 46 screens, making $65,000.
The Universal release starring Eliza Scanlen, Toby Wallace, Ben Mendelsohn and Essie Davis registered the second highest per-screen average – $1,419 – among the top 10 titles, behind the market leader’s $1,766.
With 33 per cent of the nation’s cinemas closed and most that are still operating charging half price, the top 20 titles generated a mere $1.7 million, down 27 per cent on the previous frame, according to Numero.
The weekend takings were down 90 per cent on the same weekend last year, when The Lion King, Spider-Man: Far From Home, André Rieu’s Maastricht Concert and Toy Story 4 were raking in millions.

Sony Pictures Classics has re-scheduled Guiseppe Capotondi’s The Burnt Orange Heresy for Aug. 7.
The label bought the thriller, which closed Venice last year. It was there that Capotondi and the pic’s stars Mick Jagger and Donald Sutherland won the Fondazione Mimmo Rotella Award.
Pic, based on the novel by Charles Willeford with a screenplay by Scott B. Smith follows a charming and ambitious art critic James Figueras (Claes Bang), who has fallen from grace. He spends his days in Milan lecturing witless tourists about art history. His only glimmer of hope is a new-found love interest, the enigmatic American, Berenice Hollis (Elizabeth Debicki). An opportunity strikes when he is contacted by wealthy art dealer Joseph Cassidy (Jagger) who summons James to his villa on Lake Como and asks him to steal a painting from the legendary reclusive artist, Jerome Debney (Sutherland). With all the discussion surrounding films that have been subject to delays, such as “No Time To Die,” “Tenet,” “Wonder Woman 1984,” “Black Widow,” and so many more, it’s easy to forget that Covid-19 caused a premature end to the theatrical runs of so many films that were released shortly before all the cinemas shut down in March. One of those films is the Sony Pictures Classics release, “The Burnt Orange Heresy,” which began its select theatrical run just days before the pandemic shut everything down.

Melbourne’s Cinema Nova, the Eddie Tamir family-owned cinemas and Village Cinemas’ Coburg drive-in will re-open next month – but indications are that most cinemas in other states are unlikely to turn on the lights until July.

Colin Firth in ‘The Secret Garden.’
On the reasonable assumption that cinemas are trading in July, albeit with staggered seating, audiences can look forward to a raft of Hollywood films and, perhaps, several new Australian releases.
Distributors have started scheduling titles in an orderly fashion, avoiding a logjam of product, from early July until the end of the year and beyond.
Exhibitors expect that if the 4 square metre distancing rule applies, that will limit the average capacity to around 33 per cent, which would be viable for cinemas and distributors.
Executives on both sides of the fence are confident business will rebound quickly. “I don’t think it will take long for punters to return to cinemas; people are tired of the restrictions Covid-19 has placed on their lives and there is a desire to return to normalcy,” says Studiocanal CEO Elizabeth Trotman.

After Universal ran to premium VOD at the first opportunity, other distributors were quick to follow suit. Sony trotted out “Bloodshot,” while Disney offered “Onward,” Searchlight presented “Downhill,” and Warner Bros. sold “The Way Back.” However, if there’s going to be a last man standing for theatrical exhibition, it’s Sony Pictures Classics co-president Tom Bernard, who has no interest in exploring the Pvod trend.
“That’s no place to play them,” said Bernard. “Everything starts with exhibition. When the virus is gone, when it’s safe, people will come back to theaters.”
Spc’s sexy European mystery-thriller “The Burnt Orange Heresy” opened in theaters March 13, only days before the pandemic closed theaters across the country. That same day, Focus opened “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which will now go to Pvod April 3. Bernard and partner Michael Barker will bring “Heresy” — and all the others on their spring schedule — back when theaters open again.

The 90-member Hollywood Foreign Press Association is extending its Golden Globe Awards eligibility changes in response to the widespread halt of business as usual due to the global pandemic. The temporary measures have adjusted the requirements for Golden Globe Awards eligibility, and are subject to review.

The overall box office this weekend has fallen 25% or more, which is partly due to a weak slate of titles. But the specialty business is a site of carnage. That’s because the core older arthouse audience is avoiding theaters during the current pandemic, despite the presence of compelling films at varying levels of release.
Specialized theaters have one advantage: The films they play aren’t as likely to be pulled, and can roll out more gradually and even hold. And if the big circuits shut down, surviving arthouses might pick up extra business. But the grim reality is their patrons shouldn’t be going out, even if low attendance, super-sanitizing and seat spreading limits the risk. That makes more shutdowns a likelihood.

Welcome back one and all to the weekly box office report! As is always the case, each and every Sunday you can expect a look at what made the most money in theaters, as well as just how all of the new releases fared. Once again this week, we have a rather small batch of of new releases opening, mainly consisting of Onward and The Way Back, at least in wide release. They both went up against the second weekend of horror hit The Invisible Man. How did they all do? Read on to see how the weekend turned out… Taking the top honors this week, though with a muted haul, was Pixar’s Onward. The likely Academy Award player in Best Animated Feature made an estimated $40 million, which isn’t bad. However, probably in part due to the Coronavirus scare, some families opted to stay home. The next few...

Kelly Reichardt’s ‘First Cow’ Opens Strong as Specialty Box Office Fans Leave Homes and Show Support
This weekend, the specialized world showed no signs of public resistance to moviegoing. That so much of the audience is older, and perhaps more wary, is encouraging.
The successes include the opening of the acclaimed “First Cow” (A24), a couple of niche limited openers (“The Booksellers” from Greenwich with the best per-theater number), the successful expansion of “Emma” (Focus), and decent continued results for two offbeat wider and younger-audience titles: “Impractical Jokers” (truTV) and “My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising” (Funimation).
However, the complete failure of two higher-end titles — “Wendy” (Searchlight) and “Greed” (Sony Pictures Classics) — as they expanded in their second weekends showed audiences are picky and the success rate remains challenging.
Specialized distributors are as concerned about possible theater shutdowns as anyone in the business. At this point, no changes have been made, but sources say this has gone from a day-to-day review to an hour by hour.
