When Croatian-born TV exec Sanja Božić-Ljubičić set out to establish a television market in her corner of the world a decade ago, she had always felt the Balkan region had been overlooked on the global content map.
“The Balkan region was always somewhat neglected,” she tells Deadline. “But Croatia always seemed like a romantic little resort” which she thought would be an “ideal location for a boutique event” for top global executives.
Indeed, the romantic and picturesque country, which lies entirely on the Adriatic Sea and was the first of the former Yugoslavia countries to join the European Union, is a beautiful setting. But crucially, says Božić-Ljubičić, who also runs local pay-tv and SVoD service Pickbox as well as media service provider Mediatranslations, she felt she was well-placed to create something that would align foreign industry professionals with local talent.

The UK owes many of its proudest creations to other countries. Our national dish is chicken tikka masala, the Romans gave us everything from plumbing to underfloor heating, and let’s not even get started on the Royal family.
So it should come as no surprise that some top UK TV shows are based on original series from around the world. Some of these are obvious, like Drag Race UK and Law & Order being imported from the US, or The Masked Singer originating in South Korea, but some UK remakes are less up front about their international origins.
Hullraisers
Lucy Beaumont developed this Hull-based sitcom about the lives of three hilarious, bawdy and chaotic women, which debuted on Channel 4 in spring 2022 and has already been commissioned for a second series. But despite being a gorgeous and all-too-rare depiction of working-class British wit, Hullraisers is actually based on an Israeli sitcom called Little Mom,...

AMC Networks’ Sundance Now has acquired Schiaffino Musarra’s Swedish crime comedy series “We Got This” from Banijay Rights for the U.S., Canada and the U.K.
The show follows George English (Musarra), a recently jobless American man living in Sweden who sets off to solve the 30-year-old murder of the former prime minister Olof Palme, in hopes that the 50 million Swedish crown ($5 million) reward can pay off his insurmountable tax bill. English teams with his closest friend, a wacky conspiracy theorist and former police officer, as he ventures into a web of intrigue.
Created and co-written by Musarra, the six-part dark comedy series is set against the backdrop of the true story of Palme’s assassination in 1986. Until recently, a reward was being offered by Swedish authorities, given Palme was hailed a national hero for his humanism. Ironically, “We Got This” finished airing in Sweden just days before...

Exclusive: Writer-director Levan Akin, whose most recent film And Then We Danced was Sweden’s submission into this year’s International Feature Oscar race, has jointly signed with UTA and London-based Casarotto Ramsay & Associates. The agencies will rep the filmmaker in the U.S. and UK, respectively, as part of the deal.
And Then We Danced is the third feature from the Sweden-born filmmaker of Georgian descent. The Georgian-language film was the first Lgbtq+ movie set in the country — it ran into protests in its debut there after its premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival. It just screened in the Spotlight section last month at Sundance.
Set in the world of ancient Georgian dance, the film follows an obsessive young dancer Merab (Levan Gelbakhiani), who has been training at the National Georgian Ensemble with his partner, Mary (Ana Javakishvili), since he was a child.

The writing duo behind Channel 4's mega-hit Humans have revealed they have long-term plans for the sci-fi series.
Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley told Digital Spy that they have a rough idea of what might happen beyond the upcoming second series.
"We think it could run longer than two series," Vincent said at this weekend's McM London Comic Con. "Definitely we have a very rough playful notion of what we'd do in series beyond two.
"We're still in the process of nailing down the stories for series two, of course, so that obviously has a knock-on effect. But we do think that far ahead."
Vincent added that Humans - which charts the rise of lifelike robots called Synths - has "got a few series in it".
"I think that's one of the advantages of doing a show that has a 360-degree look at the world," his co-writer Brackley said.

Robots have been a staple on the big screen for many decades, showing up as far back as Fritz Lang’s 1927 classic Metropolis and as recently as Alex Garland’s 2015 film Ex Machina. With numerous depictions of robots have come numerous ideas of what they look like, what they’re capable of, whether they’re good or evil, and other such concerns.
Now vimeo user Mennomail has made a mashup of the various robotic representations on the big screen over the years. The video is set to both Fractals by Monea Music and Ich Will by Rammstein, and highlights both the similarities and differences in how robots have been depicted by various filmmakers. Mennomail also released a list of films from which scenes appear, which is as follows:
Films used (in alphabetical order)

"Things are developing fast, as technology does in all areas. There's lots of new, society-wide effects which we're going to tell stories in."
Vincent and co-creator Jonathan Brackley confirmed that all of the major characters from the first series will return, including the Hawkins family.
"The big challenge for us is to create stories... that bring the Hawkins family back into it," Vincent explained. "We think we've cracked a couple of good ways to really tie them back into the big story."

Grand news, this. Humans, which is primed to conclude its first series on Channel 4 this Sunday night, is officially returning for a second series in 2016.
The sci-fi drama, set in a parallel present in which humanoid robots known as 'Synths' have revolutionised every area of society from industry to care-giving to sex, has proved to be one of Channel 4's biggest success stories.
Spooks writers Sam Vincent and Jon Brackley adapted their series from the Swedish original, Real Humans, which aired its own second series in October 2013. A third run is said to be in the pipeline for the Scandinavian show, but as yet, hasn't officially been confirmed.

AMC's British import Humans, itself an adaptation of the Swedish series Real Humans, feels a little like an episode of Black Mirror. Or Caprica. Or even The Returned, sort of, with that woozy sense of unease. It's effective as a domestic drama and as a can-the-robots-love story. But most great robot stories aren't about robots-qua-robots, they're about moments in culture — about what we're afraid of, whom we're afraid of, where the weak points are in the fragile construction of society. Humans works pretty well there, too.Welcome to the present day, where humanity is now aided by "synths," humanoid helper robots. They have a slightly awkward gait and posture, and glowing, glassy eyes, but otherwise look completely human, including finger- and toenails, and for the female synths, breasts that require (well, indicate) the use of a brassiere. The synths are developing consciousness, because of course they are, and various humans...

Card-carrying member of Orphan Black’s Clone Club? Certified Walking Dead Walker destroyer? There is a new show, expertly crafted, just for you. This summer, AMC is debuting its new sci-fi drama, Humans, which is loosely based off the Swedish series Real Humans. “It’s absolutely the kind of domestic family drama that you would enjoy watching, but there’s this strange, oddly socially, politically relevant thriller bubbling beneath it the whole time,” star Tom Goodman-Hill tells Us Weekly of the series, which premiered to rave reviews in the UK, [...]...

AMC's new drama "Humans" is a pretty good show with timing that isn't great. In a vacuum, the series (it debuts Sunday at 9 p.m.) is a solid, if not thrilling, piece of classic science fiction, exploring questions about the line between man and robot, whether computers can have souls, and whether mankind is destined to be rendered obsolete by the machines we're creating. Familiar stuff for the genre, but articulated well enough in the show's depiction of a near-future world where "synths" — robots who resemble people and can perform various menial jobs that many actual humans would prefer to avoid — are the hot new gadget. The two episodes AMC sent to critics have an interesting look — particularly in the way the makeup artists render the actors playing synths to appear as if they reside deep in the uncanny valley — and some good performances from the largely British cast (plus...

There's nothing particularly new about the premise of Humans, the AMC series about “synthetic” humans or robots with artificial intelligence. But for all its imagination, sci-fi is certainly a genre that recycles concepts. The intrigue lies in the execution and the re-imagining of them. We've certainly seen plenty of robots wreaking havoc on humanity. But Humans finds a way to bring intrigue to a very familiar conflict. Humans is based on a Swedish series called Real Humans, created by Lars Lundstrom. British writers Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley deliver the AMC/Channel 4/Kudos co-production, and what they immediately get right is the

Channel 4 has won much acclaim for its exploration of themes of technophobia in Black Mirror - and on Sunday night (June 14), the broadcaster returns to that topic, but on a much grander scale, in new 8-part series Humans.
A co-production with Us cable network AMC - home to The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad and Mad Men - Humans is based on a European production called Real Humans, which has aired two acclaimed series in its native Sweden.
Relocated to suburban London, Humans will otherwise explore similar territory to the original - it's again set in a parallel present where uncanny humanoid robots, known as 'Synths', are as commonplace in the home as a mobile phone or an iPad.
"Overall, it's the same idea, we just tell the story in a different way," says producer Chris Fry. "Towards the middle of the series, it does change quite a lot [from the original] - with this subject matter,...

With Mad Men wrapping up its final season, AMC is going through a transformative period, attempting to launch new shows that will appeal to the same audiences that so widely embraced that period series along with crime saga Breaking Bad. This summer, it will unveil one of its riskiest attempts to do just that, with sci-fi drama Humans.
The eight-part series is due to premiere June 28, and today sees the unveiling of new key art along with an expanded first-look clip. Humans takes place in a parallel present London where technology has advanced to such a point that every household is embracing ‘Synths’ – artificially intelligent servants that look eerily like us but live just to serve. Though the premise bears similarities to films like I, Robot and Ex Machina, the series will focus more on the philosophical and emotional impact of the new technology, as it becomes increasingly unclear what it means to be human.

It’s time to get excited about TV science fiction again, as Us cable network AMC partners with UK broadcaster Channel 4 to produce Humans – an eight episode series to be co-produced by UK company Kudos (Broadchurch). The project is an adaptation of the Swedish science fiction-drama titled Real Humans that aired in 2012. That source material was written by Lars Lundstrom and was described by critics as “creepy as hell,” so this English language version – from the pens of Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (Spooks) – looks very promising indeed.
Originally developed for release on Microsoft’s Xbox Entertainment platform, the show is set in an alternative, current reality, in which the must-have gadget for households is a “synth,” which are highly developed robotic servants that are incredibly realistic in terms of their resemblance to mankind. Such hardware is not always within easy financial reach for the average suburban family, however,...
