Gene Roddenberry's celebrated sci-fi TV series "Star Trek" debuted on September 8, 1966, and recently celebrated its 57th anniversary. Initially, "Trek" wasn't terribly popular, and only managed to make a third season thanks to a coordinated letter-writing campaign (a campaign that Roddenberry was accused of orchestrating and encouraging himself). It wouldn't be until after "Star Trek" was canceled in 1969 that its popularity would significantly begin to grow. Thanks to a sweet infinite syndication deal, "Star Trek" reruns were common, and a cult began to form. By the early 1970s, the first "Trek" conventions began to appear. Naturally, conventions were a great place for the show's stars and creators to congregate and share production stories with a rising tide of obsessives. Fans were able to talk to and get autographs from William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, Majel Barrett, Walter Koenig, George Takei, James Doohan, and Grace Lee Whitney, as...

Even when he’s not trying to be funny, laughter can be the first response that greets William Shatner. Some may think of him as a caricature. What Alexandre O. Philippe’s thoughtful, searching new documentary “You Can Call Me Bill” reveals, without ever being so blunt as to say as much, is that that laughter reveals more about us than about Shatner. About our inability to comprehend someone quite as complex, as defiantly irreducible, as the man who once was Captain Kirk.
Shatner may be pop culture’s greatest master of pontification, and there is no topic on which he doesn’t have thoughts. He’s expressed them before in the 2001 Peter Jaysen documentary “Mind/Meld”; in the 2011 documentary that he himself directed looking back at the legacy of “Star Trek” in its many different incarnations, “The Captains”; and as seen in Philippe’s new film, via poetry readings...

Ever since its conception, springing from the imagination of creator Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek has been a story of exploration and inspiration.
The Original Series, first aired back in the 1960s, gave us some of the most iconic characters of the entire franchise and also served to introduce various alien species prominent within the Federation. Among these peoples were the Vulcans. If you couldn’t guess, they live on a planet hailed as Vulcan and it’s from this race that the father of Spock comes, while his mother’s a human. Spock is one of the protagonists of Star Trek: Tos, constantly seeking the answers to sophisticated problems through the execution of logic.
The stern, oft-emotionless Mr. Spock makes for a loyal friend of Captain James T. Kirk, despite his painfully awkward sociality. On the screen, this bond was portrayed by Leonard Nimoy (Spock) and William Shatner (Kirk) and...

Warning: If “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” was a seminal show for you in the ’90s, the documentary “What We Left Behind” will probably make you cry. The platonic ideal of a loving tribute, this crowdfunded documentary directed by “DS9” showrunner Ira Steven Behr and “The Captains” producer David Zappone gathers nearly every key member of the “DS9” family to look back on arguably “Trek’s” most progressive and game-changing series.
Behr puts himself front and center in the documentary, breaking the fourth wall periodically as a quasi-narrator and guide through “DS9’s” legacy. Full of touches that will invoke memories of the show’s most iconic moments (including a hysterical post-credits gag or two), “What We Left Behind” is almost like Behr’s memoir of the making of the show, albeit with a ton of familiar faces popping in to add their two cents.

Next year will mark a half-century since Captain Kirk first piloted the Enterprise into the Final Frontier, and William Shatner wants to celebrate. The thing is, nobody at Paramount has reached out to him, so he's pitching his own Star Trek anniversary show. "I don't know how they can do their own without me," he recently told The Guardian. Nevertheless, he has not had much luck with his own idea. "We had a big company say, 'What about a musical or a music variety show?' That got some traction...

Hugh Jackman goes extra dark in Prisoners, but the real surprise, says People's critic, is the late James Gandolfini showing his lighter side in Enough Said. See This var brightcovevideoid = '2682946555001'; Prisoners There's nothing like the psychic shock and horror of child abduction. It terrifies communities and sends parents into entirely understandable panic. So it's with no small calculation that Prisoners snatches two children right out from under their watchful parents' noses - and on Thanksgiving, no less. Then it gets really mean. If you're no fan of on-screen brutality, then this is not your Saturday night at the movies.

Sitting in the captain's chair on any Star Trek vehicle is an awesome responsibility for any actor; all eyes are upon you both onscreen and off, and no one is more aware of the benefits and trappings of that honor than William Shatner, the man who did it first back in the '60s.

The Anatomy of Superhero Film Music panel
Thursday was a big day for television, with a full day of programming in Ballroom 20 (including Sherlock and the X-Files 20th anniversary panel). Given the craziness of Ballroom 20, I opted for the smaller rooms, starting the day off at a panel called The Anatomy of Superhero Film Music. A group of composers for various superhero projects made up the panel and we went down the line, taking a look at clips from each project, both with and without the music, exploring this contrast, along with the inspiration for the music. The one television project was an excerpt of Bear McCreary’s score for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. We listened to what appears to be a main theme for the upcoming series. Unsurprisingly, given McCreary’s prior work and the superhero focus of the show, it features a mostly orchestral sound, with some...

"Spock, I do not know too much about these little Tribbles yet, but there is one thing that I have discovered. I like them … better than I like you." –Dr. McCoy, "Star Trek" (1967)
Greetings from the apocalypse! The trouble with Tribbles is not how cute they are but how much they multiply, or in the case of "Star Trek Into Darkness," the silly plot point for which they cameo. Sir Patrick Stewart and William Shatner have appeared at the first official Star Trek convention in over ten years. All five captains from the sci-fi franchise's TV shows were in attendance at the 'Destination Star Trek' event at London's ExCel centre this weekend. Scott Bakula, Avery Brooks and Kate Mulgrew appeared for a Q&A session with fans on stage with Shatner and Stewart, marking only the second time they have all appeared together. William Shatner's latest endeavor is the documentary "Get a Life!," a feature about "Star Trek" conventions and fandom based on his book of the same name and premiering tomorrow, July 28th at 5pm on Epix. Like his 2011 film "The Captains," "Get a Life" was directed by Shatner and finds the man who was Kirk delving into the subculture of the landmark series in which he starred, one that has, for better and worse, dominated and shaped both his career and those of many of his fellow castmembers. Inspired by the film, we put together this Kübler-Ross-style chart of the Seven Stages of William Shatner, tracking his transformation from young Canadian unknowning signing on to a sci-fi series to mid-career actor trying desparately to distance himself from the franchise to the current shamelessly self-aware legend embracing his destiny as a genre icon. 1. With Comic-Con just two days away, the imminent pandering to fans has already begun. Morgan Spurlock's documentary Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope just hit DVD and Blu-ray this week, and now it appears that we have yet another fan-oriented documentary that will be premiering at the Con: William Shatner's Get a Life. The movie finds Shatner trying to get to the bottom of what makes Trekkers tick. But wait a minute, hasn't this subject already been explored like a billion times before? Why yes... yes it has. Watching the teaser trailer for Get a Life, it's hard to see anything new that Shatner might be able to add to the conversation. In addition to Trekkies and Trekkies 2, there is Rod Roddenbery's Trek Nation, which is also holding a special screening at Comic-Con this week. If Shatner's last documentary The Captains is any indication of what to expect,...

Tree Of Life (20th Century Fox) Terrence Malick’s latest effort is both the best film of 2011 and the finest work of his (arguably) mixed, but often masterly canon. A series of vignettes, mostly set in 1950s Texas, capture the memory of a man (Sean Penn) in present-day New York who looks back on his life, and his parents’ (Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain) troubled marriage, when word of his younger brother’s suicide reaches him. Almost indescribable beyond that, except to say no other film in history so perfectly evokes the magic and mystery of the human memory, which both crystalizes (and sometimes idealizes) the past. Like Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, this is a challenging, polarizing work that you must let wash over you. If you go along for the ride, you’re in for a unique, rewarding cinematic experience. Also available on Blu-ray disc.

On Oct.13, 2011 William Shatner’s documentary ‘The Captains’ had a limited single day, single screening event across Canada in Cineplex theaters. So limited in fact, that even though you could purchase a ticket at the box office, some of the staff at the cinema had no idea it was playing in their own theater. Well, I had a rare experience while at San Diego Comic-Con this year. I had a chance to share a small room with three captains from Star Trek: William Shatner, Avery Brooks and Scott Bakula. They were there to promote a new documentary that Shatner had put together, where he flies around the world to really get to know the actors who themselves had the honor of sitting in a starship bridge's captain's chair. Shatner, who once wouldn't even acknowledge the existence of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," left no captain unchecked. Not only did he spend quality time with Brooks and Bakula, but he also sat down with Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew and the new Capt. Kirk, Chris Pine. I didn't get a chance to watch "The Captains" when it was first released this past summer. In fact, I had ...

The man who brought Captain Kirk to life visits his co-captains around the world, delving into their lives on and off screen.

The Captains Written and Directed by: William Shatner Starring: William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula, Chris Pine The Captains is a documentary made for fans of Star Trek. It features interviews with the actors who starred as starship captains in the Star Trek franchise. What makes this Star Trek documentary unique is that it was written and directed by William Shatner, the second actor to play a starship captain. (Shatner replaced the first actor as captain, Jeffrey Hunter, who starred in only the pilot episode of Star Trek. Hunter has gone on to the final frontier, and so was not contacted for an interview.) Also the interviews were conducted by Shatner, who appears on-screen with his interviewees. On viewing this documentary, it soon becomes apparent that its focus is not on Star Trek, but rather on Shatner himself. I confess. I am a lapsed Trekkie. I...

For the past 45 years, William Shatner has gone boldly where few actors have gone before thanks to his iconic role as Captain James Tiberius Kirk on the original "Star Trek" series.
The role made him famous beyond anyone's wildest dreams and while Kirk helmed the Starship Enterprise, Shatner helmed both a successful TV series (at least in reruns) and six wildly successful films in one of the most successful movie franchises.
But it was only while making his new documentary, "The Captains," that Shatner, now 80, finally became Ok with the fact that when he dies, he will be remembered mainly for his role as Kirk, despite his Emmy-winning work on "Boston Legal" and other roles in his career.
"Over the years, I've become barraged by comments from people, such as, 'Beam me up, Scotty!' and I became defensive," he told HuffPost Weird News. "I felt they were derisive and engendered an attitude.

You may know her from the wildly popular Star Trek: Voyager, or perhaps from her numerous works on the Broadway stage or maybe, just maybe, through her philanthropic efforts. Either way, you’ve probably heard of esteemed actress Kate Mulgrew. Recently Blogomatic3000 got the opportunity to interview Mrs. Mulgrew and jumped at the chance!
Aaron M.K.: Hello Mrs. Mulgrew. How are you today?
Kate Mulgrew: I’m well, how are you?
Aaron M.K.: Oh I’m fine, thank you.
Kate Mulgrew: Good.
Aaron M.K.: You’ve been a big part of the science fiction scene for quite a while now. How do you feel about the science fiction genre as an actor?
Kate Mulgrew: Increasingly honored and interested because, as is true of all things that capture our imagination, I have learned about science through science fiction. And I know that they are joined,...

Every summer in Toronto, Fan Expo has become a ritual for me. It is Canada's largest entertainment convention for anime, comics, gaming, horror and sci-fi. And it just keeps on getting bigger. With one more day added to this extravaganza, there are twice as many celebrities and even more panels to choose from.Having time off this year, meant I would be going All... Four... Days! As I am a Star Trek fan, this was exciting. The first thing you would notice about this year... fewer lines. There was actually time to move from one event to another.
On the first day, the R2D2 Builders unleashed one of its droids. It's the roving celebrity photo op. The next day, I saw the guy controlling it. He held a remote behind his back as the robot pushed through the throng surprising passersby. While I waited for the autograph lines to dissipate,...

William Shatner had an easier time battling Klingons than getting money for his film, The Captains. Now that he's got a hit documentary on his hands, he's game to make more.
Even Starfleet captains have to queue up for documentary funding.
The Canadian government kept William Shatner waiting two years before filmmaking grants came through for The Captains--his original documentary now streaming at Epix, an on-demand distributor from Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate, and MGM Studios. In it, Shatner interviews fellow Star Trek captains--Patrick Stewart, James Avery, Scott Bakula, Kate Mulgrew, and Chris Pine--about their drive to act, ways they approached their roles, and how the iconic franchise impacted their lives.
"The making of The Captains was both a business and artistic venture," Shatner tells Fast Company. "We tried to do this as reasonably as possible and the Canadian government made it very difficult. So grants should be very carefully examined by future filmmakers.

William Shatner and Chris Pine arm wrestle. Le Big Boss Productions
“Shatnerpalooza” sounds like the perfect spectacle for Comic-Con and for actor William Shatner’s larger than life personal brand. But the event was created by premium cable channel Epix to help promote “The Captains,” a feature-length documentary about Star Trek’s lead line officer role that catapulted Shatner and five other actors into Star Trek lore and includes appearance by Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, Avery Brooks, Scott Bakula and Chris Pine.

I grew up watching Star Trek - first with The Next Generation and then, for a little while, Voyager (shudder). It's impossible for me to hate anything Patrick Stewart does simply because the sonorous tones of his voice narrated so many of my childhood evenings. Plus, I am also very bald and us hairless dudes have to stick together. Throw in the always goofy-yet-entertaining Shatner and this new documentary, The Captains, sounded amazing. Captain Kirk interviewing the other captains of the Star Trek universe, trading war stories and discussing the show? Trekkie perfection.

William Shatner is at Comic-Con promoting a couple of things, including his upcoming documentary, The Captains. During his panel the iconic Star Trek captain decided to lead the audience of 3,000 in one epic (world record breaking) Khan!, recreating the equally-as-iconic scene from Star Trek: Wrath of Khan. (Related tidbit: Khan's costume from that film is actually on the convention floor for people to scope out.)

Khaaaaaaaaaan! Oh wait, it’s not Khan, it’s Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, who spoke to EW’s Adam B. Vary at this year’s Comic-Con. In San Diego to promote his documentary, The Captains — in which the actor interviews Chris Pine, Patrick Stewart, and all other stars who played Star Trek captains — Shatner talked about the convention, filming his project, and Captain Kirk as a figure to look up to. “If there’s a role model for being a man and appreciating woman and being forthright and being patriotic and serving your country and doing all the niceties of Americana,...

William Shatner, the man who will forever be known as Capt. Kirk, and he of seemingly healthy ego, had a confession to make at Comic-Con: He doesn’t consider himself a success. At the geekathon to plug his new project, “The Captains,” he worked in a mention of his third autobiography and forthcoming album of covers themed to space exploration, “Seeking Major Tom.” Nonetheless, he noted, with a proper dose of gravitas, that a question about his success was inapt. “It’s always eluded me trying to find success,” he said. William Shatner is a hero, an icon, a legend, a source of great and everlasting joy. A top-notch film director, however, he is not.
The True Captain’s previous feature work includes the one Trek flick I’d like to excised from canon (“marshmellons”) and the shockingly ready-for-MST3K train wreck Groom Lake. Mr. Shatner does have a distinct talent for the, how shall one call it, unique interview style. Sadly, there’s not too much you can learn from a one-on-one with Valerie Bertanelli as on his show Raw Nerve, so kudos to whomever put the idea in his head to set down with the other leaders of the Trek franchise and make The Captains.
In short: it’s a pisser. A really strange pisser. For hardcore Trekkies, hearts will sing during Shatner’s rap with Patrick Stewart. After a volley of mutual admiration, Stewart admits that Shatner’s...

William Shatner has created a must-watch documentary for Star Trek devotees in which he sits down with all the other actors who played Captains in the sci-fi film and television franchise.
The Captains features Shatner in conversation with the likes of Patrick Stewart, Scott Bakula and Chris Pine, and he admits it was a very rewarding experience.
Shatner says, "The documentary that I directed and am in... is a voyage of a kind, an epiphany for me within the documentary.
"We flew all over the world to find the actors who were the Captains in Star Trek and I found traits and abilities and tendencies that were communal, that we all had. All the actors had many things in common.
"Everybody got divorced, everybody had trials and tribulations, everybody had a sadness."
As part of the documentary, Shatner arm wrestles Pine.
The show debuts on U.S. cable channel Epix on Friday. Shatner will also host a screening of the film at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Monday night.
