Gorgeous, infamous and woefully misrepresented, Ava Gardner is one of numerous Old Hollywood actresses who is being reevaluated by audiences today. She’s also seeing her story told onstage in “Ava: The Secret Conversations,” playing at the Geffen Playhouse through May 14.
Actress Elizabeth McGovern, of “Downton Abbey” fame, and director Moritz von Stuelpnagel adapt Peter Evans’ book of the same name for the production, which charts the last years of Gardner’s life.
McGovern pulls double duty as leading lady and writer of the play’s script. She came to Gardner’s work through Evans’ book, primarily. “The starting point was the seduction of this idea of a biographer attempting to get a life story out of a recalcitrant or ambivalent subject and all the things that brings up about the nature of biography, about the nature of how we look at our own lives and what they add up to at the very end,...

“I know you’re pretty and the boys like you, but I’m here to protect you.” So says Norma Carlisle (Downton Abbey‘s Elizabeth McGovern), a local society matron in Kansas who never broke a rule in her life and impulsively volunteers to accompany Louise Brooks (Haley Lu Richardson) to New York while the teenager studies dance for the summer. The question is Norma’s motivation, which we learn in the first trailer for The Chaperone, from the Downton Abbey team of writer Julian Fellowes and director Michael Engler.

The Crawley family cordially invites you to what they promise will be a cinematic event. The first teaser for “Downton Abbey,” the film adaptation and continuation of the long-running ITV and PBS series, has just dropped. And it’s a regal, impressive first look.
In the teaser, the maids are making the beds, they’re crossing their Ts on all the signatures, and the bell is ringing at the front gate for guests to arrive.
While the plot is unknown for the new film, the original series followed the Crawley family and the servants who worked for them at the turn of the 20th century in an Edwardian English country home.

Welcome back, Lady Mary and the Crawley family. Focus Features has debuted the first trailer for the upcoming “Downton Abbey” movie, which continues the story made famous by the Emmy-winning drama series. “Downton” originally aired for six seasons on ITV in the United Kingdom and on PBS in the United States. Series creator Julian Fellowes has long wanted to turn the series into a feature film, and he wrote the script for the movie.
“Since the series ended, fans of ‘Downton’ have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter,” Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said earlier this year when the film was announced. “We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of ‘Downton’ to the big screen.”
The film is being directed by Michael Engler, who took over the movie from originally-announced director Brian Percival.

Another year, another Los Angeles Film Festival — only this time it’s different. Well, sort of: Laff made waves when it announced that it was moving from its usual time slot of June to late September, ostensibly to throw its hat in the ever-crowded fall-festival ring; the lineup looks much the same as previous editions, however, and so the change appears to have been largely cosmetic.
Whatever the case, this year’s program features a number of under-the-radar offerings with breakout status, especially when you take a closer look at who’s involved in them. Here’s what to get excited for.
“The Chaperone” (Premieres)
Look, we all miss “Downton Abbey.” The movie adaptation of that beloved comfort-food series is still a year away, so take, well, comfort in the fact that we can at least hold ourselves over with “The Chaperone” for now. Series creator Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay,...

Veteran TV director Michael Engler will helm the two-hour premiere of “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes’ upcoming NBC drama “The Gilded Age.”
Engler reunites with Fellowes after having directed four episodes of the costume drama including its series finale, as well as the upcoming feature film “The Chaperone,” which was written by Fellowes.
“The Gilded Age,” which will run for 10 episodes, is set in 1880s New York City, and centers on Marian Brook, the wide-eyed young scion of a conservative family who will embark on infiltrating the wealthy neighboring family dominated by ruthless railroad tycoon George Russell, his rakish and available son Larry, and his ambitious wife Bertha, whose “new money” is a barrier to acceptance by the Astor and Vanderbilt set.
Fellowes is writer and will executive produce alongside “Downton” alum Gareth Neame. The project hails from Universal Television.

WWE: Triple H – Thy Kingdom Come Blu-ray
The career of Paul “Triple H” Levesque in WWE has lasted for nearly 20 years now. He’s gone from a blue chip prospect that started in WCW to a degenerate ally of the great Shawn Michaels and he developed into a main eventer that is one of the best heels in WWE history. Now that he’s not a full timer anymore, he’s moved on to become an office guy that plays an important role in the future of the company. He’s in charge of talent development, he has a major say in booking and is an on screen character as well. The work never stops when you’re a man in his position.
Over the course of the 20 years that Hunter Hearst Helmsley has been in WWE, there are a lot of great moments. There are plenty of missteps too.

The History of WWE: 50 Years of Sports Entertainment begins with Vince McMahon getting out of his car at WWE headquarters in Connecticut and greeting employees as he makes his way to his office on the top floor of what was once known as TitanTowers.
The documentary portion of this release begins at the beginning, with information about Jess McMahon and Vince McMahon Sr, and how they began what we now know as WWE. Jess McMahon was a boxing promoter, his son Vince, turned it into a traditional regional professional wrestling promotion, and his son, the current head of WWE, Vince McMahon Jr, turned it into the multimedia conglomerate that we know today.
The talking heads are extremely relevant and well picked, it is nice to see the big names from wrestling’s history on here, talking about the history of WWE as a company and the wrestling business as a whole.

When the stars of the squared circle try their hand at cinema, the results can be mixed
They may have made their names by dressing up in spandex and pretending to hit other men, but professional wrestlers are some of the most engaging performers in the entertainment world.
Some of the industry's biggest stars have made the transition from the squared-circle to the silver screen, with varying degrees of success – and quality.
Here are five of the most memorable films starring professional wrestlers – can you think of any others? Let us know in the thread below.
1. Mr Nanny
It's odd to think that a man who looked constantly sunburnt and sported a bleached Fu Manchu moustache could be such a hit with the kids, but Hulk Hogan was a huge star in the 80s and 90s, when Hulkmania ran wild across the globe.

Is Ariel Winter's mother an out-of-control child abuser - or a pushy but protective stage mom doing the best she can with a temperamental teenager? Those are among the issues facing a judge who'll decide as early as Nov. 20 who will raise the 14-year-old Modern Family star: her mother Chrisoula Workman or her 34-year-old sister Shannon Gray. Among them, an attorney for Gray alleged that Ariel had come close...

Casting on Sofia Coppola’s new celebrity-obsessed crime movie The Bling Ring seems to be coming together quite quickly. It was just about a week ago we learned that Emma Watson had signed on to become the first actor confirmed for the film, and now THR has news that she’s being joined by a gaggle more. The biggest name added to the cast is Leslie Mann (Knocked Up), who is set to play the mother of two of the female members of this teenage crime ring – but she’s not alone. This movie tells the based-on-a-true story of a bunch of teenagers who break into celebrity homes, and Coppola reportedly wants to use it as an opportunity to break in a bunch of young new actors. Perhaps the biggest break is going to come to Israel Broussard (The Chaperone), who gets to play the male lead. But, in addition to him, young...

Fresh off the production of the Knocked Up spin-off This Is 40, the electrifying comedienne Leslie Mann has just signed on to co-star in Sofia Coppola's next feature The Bling Ring. Based on the true tale of a gang of teens who chase their desire for fame and fortune by robbing the rich and famous, the Beverly Hills-set flick will star Emma Watson as their shrewd leader, and THR reports Mann will play mom to two of the titular ring members. Also joining the cast is Israel Broussard (The Chaperone), who'll take on the male lead/likely accomplice. With only a couple of kid flicks to his credit, Broussard is a relative newcomer, making him a chancy choice for a key role. But Coppola, who penned the script and will direct and produce, has made some even bolder.as in greener--selections for the rest of her girl gang. Katie Chang,...

Is Sofia Coppola a fan of Judd Apatow films? Man, we hope so, because if that's the case just give us a call Sofia, and we'll bring "Knocked Up" and some Orville Redenbacher.
Leslie Mann is the latest to come aboard Coppola's "The Bling Ring," joining Emma Watson and Taissa Farmiga in the film. But that's not all, as a pack of newcomers including Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Pfister (related to Wally?) and Georgia Rock have also signed on as the young miscreants in the based-on-a-true-story tale about some young teens who decide to break in to celebrity homes and steal. Most of these young thesps don't have much of a profile except for Broussard, though his last gig was in the Triple H movie "The Chaperone," the trailer of which is below and should be watched if only as proof that the awesome Kevin Corrigan needs a better agent.

Most of these young thesps don't have much of a profile except for Broussard, though his last gig was in the Triple H movie "The Chaperone," the trailer of which is below and should be watched if only as proof that the awesome Kevin Corrigan needs a better agent.

Another bumper edition- I hereby pledge never to write several 2000 word reviews a week while neglecting this beautiful little column- with three weeks worth of viewing listed below.
An added element to the Film Diary this time around is the sub-challenge A Disney A Day, instigated at the behest of my girlfriend, who discovered that between us we now own every Disney home release- except the somewhat controversial Song of the South (which, despite featuring one of Disney’s most released soundtrack songs, is yet to see a DVD release)- and has decided that it would be a missed opportunity not to watch all of them as quickly as possible. Seems my spirit may have rubbed off there a little…
The count so far: 101 Films
Anyway, into three figures now, and catching up to the 1 film a day rate (though that’s slow for me). Read on, lovely Diary...

Just yesterday in my review of Knucklehead, I was pondering whether the WWE had a good film in them and on the strength of that film I didn’t think it was at all possible. I lament the fact that the company seems to be invested in only making either super-macho fighty-shouty films like The Marine (and its sequel), or fish-out-of-water projects like Knucklehead that put a Wrestler in an unfamiliar role for the purpose of comedy. The result is invariably a slow torture- for the audience and for the Wrestler in question alike- so it wasn’t exactly with gleeful excitement that I picked up The Chaperone starring Triple H to put into my DVD player…

"The Man From Nowhere" (2010)
Directed by Lee Jeong-beom
Released by Well Go USA
Matt Singer said there's a sequence in this Korean revenge thriller that has "already taken up permanent residence in the Movie Hall of Fame section of my brain," so what more do you need? "Mother" star Won Bin stars as the man who is framed by local gangsters and seeks to retrieve the young girl he lives next door to after she's been kidnapped.
"Abducted" (2011)
Directed by Jon Bonnell
Released by Brain Damage Films
Originally called "Match.Dead," this 2009 thriller details the perils of online dating when a teen girl (Kathleen Benner) arranges a date with a man she soon learns is a psychopath (James Ray). Alan Smithee is the credited screenwriter on IMDb, so one might not want to go in with high expectations.

One of the most important aspect of a professional wrestler's persona is his entrance music. It's the signal that lets the world know that he is coming, and a good song can often enhance the character with only a few chords and words. Hulk Hogan's legacy certainly would not have been as great had he not had "Real American" playing over the speakers every time he ripped his shirt off, and the likes of the Ultimate Warrior, "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase, the Undertaker, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and the Rock all had distinct music that perfectly complimented their huge personalities.
As far as entrance themes go, Triple H has one of the best. His tune, "The Game," is one of the more savage entries on the WWE playlist, which is owed to the fact that Motörhead recorded the track for him. Over the course of his career,...

The road to Hollywood is littered with professional wrestlers who have attempted to cross over from the squared circle onto the red carpet. The strike rate has not been great (Hulk Hogan's turn in "Mr. Nanny" should provide sufficient evidence of that), but then again, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has certainly fashioned himself into a bankable movie star.
Paul "Triple H" Levesque is on the right path. Not only does he already have a few non-wrestling film and television appearances under his belt (he had a memorable turn in "Blade: Trinity"), but when selecting his first headlining role, he eschewed the obvious road as an action star in favor of a more nuanced role in a family comedy: "The Chaperone," which had a brief run in theaters and will come to DVD and Blu-Ray next week.

HollywoodLife.com speaks to Modern Family’s Ariel Winter about her new movie and how she emulates Sandra Bullock
While in Anaheim for Monday Night Raw, February 14th, I had a chance to speak with Modern Family’s Ariel Winter who stars in the WWE Film, The Chaperone along with WWE superstar Triple H. The Chaperone, which hits theaters Feb. 18, is the story of Ray Bradstone (Paul “Triple H” Levesque), a reformed bank robber who once released from prison tries to reconnect with his daughter, Sally (Ariel Winter). Redemption goes awry as he ends up chaperoning Sally’s class trip to the New Orleans Natural History Museum. Imagine Kindergarten Cop meets Speed and you have The Chaperone!
“I feel like I was Sandra Bullock in Speed” the 13-year-old star tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively adding, “Driving the bus was a lot of fun, and a major part in the film that gets my family back together.

Thirteen-time World Wrestling Entertainment champion Paul “Triple H” Levesque continues the organization’s tradition of turning (or trying to, anyway) its biggest superstars into movie stars with “The Chaperone.” Helmed by Stephen Herek (“Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” “Rock Star”), the movie approaches a winning formula combining all the elements that have characterized wrestler-actor transformations in the past: action, comedy and a family-friendly story line that pairs a big man with a small child (think Hulk Hogan in “Mr. Nanny” or the Rock in “The Game Plan”).
Levesque stars as Ray-Ray Bradstone — now “plain Ray,” he insists — an ex-con on the outside for the first time in seven years after being convicted for driving the getaway car during a bank robbery. Determined to make good with his daughter, now in junior high, he volunteers to chaperone her school trip to New Orleans.

With the proper alignment of talent, the cliché of a brawny thug with a heart of gold becomes an irreverent and heartwarming combination in films like Norwegian deadpan comedy "A Somewhat Gentle Man" and Darren Aronofsky's "The Wrestler." While "The Chaperone" bests those works by starring a real wrestler, it falls short on every other count. Flatly directed by Stephen Herek from a screenplay by S.J. Roth, the movie seems ...

While an actor by the name of "Paul Levesque" might not ring a bell, it's more likely you would know him as Hunter Hearst Helmsley or "Triple H," a professional wrestler who has gone to the very heights of the sports entertainment business after seventeen years in the ring. He has become hugely popular because of it, most famously for his run with Shawn Michaels turning the WWE (then known as the WWF) on its ear as "D-Generation X," possibly the closest thing professional wrestling had to the Sex Pistols back in the day. Seven years after co-starring in the comic book threequel Blade: Trinity , Levesque is back in movie theaters with WWE Studios' latest, The Chaperone , a very different film that what one might expect from wrestling's perennial tough...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Les amours imaginaires (Heartbeats) Trailer Honestly, I hope this movie ends with all three of them deciding to partake in ritualistic suicide. There was a...

Directed by: Stephen Herek
Starring: Kevin Corrigan, Ariel Winter, Yeardley Smith
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: February 1, 2011

My Thoughts: A dangerous man is charged with taking care of children while on the run from his own past. Sounds eerily like The Pacifier, right? But no, it’s a “brand new” movie, just a recycled idea. The only problem is, it wasn’t that clever even when it was original.
To make matters worse (and call me skeptical if you must) but wrestlers in an acting capacity rarely make for a good time. What I think is most surprising is the number of reputable people involved in this movie. Just for starters, the ex-con’s daughter is played by Ariel Winter, who some may recognize from Modern Family. She’s on a hit TV show and her agent advised her to do this? Winter may be in need of some new representation…...

Plot: Ray Bradstone (Triple H) is the best wheel man in the bank robbery business. Just out of prison, he is determined to go straight and be the best parent he can be to his daughter and make amends with his ex-wife. After trying everything he can do to re-connect with his family and struggling in vain to find honest work, his old bank-robbing crew offers him one last job. He signs on as their getaway driver - only to change his mind at the last second after getting the opportunity to chaperone his daughter's class trip. The new movie is directed by Stephen Herek (101 Dalmatians, The Mighty Ducks, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure) and is set to get a limited theatrical run on February 18th.

The Chaperone is the latest movie from WWE Studios and stars one of the companies biggest wrestlers, Paul “Triple H” Levesque, alongside Kevin Corrigan, Ariel Winter and Annabeth Gish (one of my all-time favourite actresses) in a comedy about a former getaway driver determined to turn his life around and establish a relationship with his estranged daughter.
Now I wouldn’t normally be interested in seeing a comedy featuring a wrestler in the leading role – especially after seeing some of Hulk Hogan’s supposed “comedies” but The Chaperone has a good pedigree – it’s director, Stephen Herek, has made some really great movies: Critters, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead to name a few, so I’m actually looking forward to this one!

There’s a joke here about Paul Levesque (aka Triple H, aka Hunter Hearst Helmsley) stealing Dwayne Johnson’s (aka The Rock) career from, say, 2000, but it’s not accurate. The Tooth Fairy came out last year. Last year! The Rock is still rocking some family friendly films, but it’s no joke that his affiliation with babysitting and trekking up to Witch Mountain helped make him a bona fide acting presence along the action flicks he was doing. Then, there’s Triple H. He’s starring in a new movie called The Chaperone – the story of a former bank robber trying to reconnect with his daughter on a field trip when, guess what, his life of crime suddenly comes back to kidnap him and his daughter. It would seem like something for Dolph Lundgren to tackle, but the tone of the trailer is way more lighthearted and faux charm-filled. Check it out...

There has been some news regarding the upcoming WWE films project The Chaperone. Recently, Kevin Corrigan (American Gangster), Annabeth Gish (The West Wing), and Ariel Winter (Modern Family) have signed on to star alongside wrestler Jean Paul Leveque (better known as wrestler Hhh) in the film. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m pretty interested to see The Chaperone. For one, Triple H can do comedy and action – we’ve seen that in the WWE; two it also stars Annabeth Gish; and three, it’s directed by Stephen Herek – who has made some damn fine comedies over the years.
