Quentin Tarantino is one of our most renowned cinephiles, as illustrated by his encyclopedic knowledge of film history, genres, and Hollywood stars. He is mostly known for creating audacious films such as "Pulp Fiction" and the "Kill Bill" series. While he has co-directed other movies (such as "Four Rooms" and "Sin City"), it is Tarantino's originals that have left a distinct impact on popular culture.
But did you know that Tarantino has also dabbled in television directing? As "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood" demonstrated, he is just as savvy about television as he is about film, with a wide knowledge of its unique ecosystem and history. He brought this deep appreciation of television to his work on the eerie two-part season 5 finale of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" entitled "Grave Danger" in 2005. When the Los Angeles Times asked the wildly creative director if he felt "trapped by working within the confines of network television,...

Denis Villeneuve assembled one heck of a cast for "Dune," and that ensemble is only growing in the upcoming "Dune: Part Two." Several big stars are on board, including Florence Pugh ("Midsommar"), Austin Butler ("Elvis"), and Christopher Walken ("Catch Me If You Can"). Crucially, some of the biggest additions to the cast are younger stars, who join Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya on that front. Casting the next generation of superstars was no mistake, and it was something the director did very deliberately, in part because he believes those actors can help bring people back to theaters.
Pugh, Butler, Chalamet, and Zendaya are all firmly on Hollywood's A-list. But they're also some of only a small handful of stars under the age of 50 that general audiences will pay to see in a movie just because they're in it. In a piece last year in Time about Pugh and her rise to fame,...

Broadway in Hollywood said today that the Tony-winning smash Broadway musical will return to the Pantages Theatre next year, with its limited engagement starting in December 2024. The organization usually reveals the Hollywood Boulevard venue’s entire season every February, but it got a broom-flying start on 2024-25.
The show is based on Gregory Maguire 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which followed up L. Featuring songs including “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” it looks at what happened in the Land of Oz from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman born with emerald-green skin who is smart, fiery, misunderstood and possessing an extraordinary talent. In 2017, Shinichiro Ueda's “One Cut of the Dead” splattered across screens. Earning accolades such as the audience award at both 2018's San Diego Asian Film Festival and Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, the movie unmistakably impacted viewers. Due to this popularity, a continuation was produced: “One Cut of the Dead Spin-Off: In Hollywood.” Though Ueda returns as screenwriter, assistant director of the first film, Yuya Nakaizumi, takes the helm as the director.

As the WGA strike continues and SAG-AFTRA looks to begin its own negotiations with the studios in June, SAG-AFTRA national executive director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland not only expressed solidarity with the WGA, but explained how actors’ problems are similar to those facing writers during a panel on the state of the TV industry.
Speaking during the panel at SeriesFest in Denver on Monday, Crabtree-Ireland said current conditions in the industry are “not right.”
“I think we all understand that things have been moving in the wrong direction as a result of the technological innovations in the industry, and that really has to stop because we can’t have a vital industry if the people who are responsible for creating all of that content can’t have a career, can’t pay for their basic living expenses,” Crabtree-Ireland said. “It’s not right. And, frankly, actors are facing the same problem.

The new one is Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421, and it will be shopped imminently. A plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean six minutes after takeoff and is flooded after an explosion during evacuation. A dozen survivors sink in a sealed part of the aircraft as it perches precariously on an undersea cliff 200 feet below the surface. Among them is an engineer and his 11-year-old daughter. His estranged wife and the girl’s mother is part of the elite rescue team that races to save the passengers before their air runs out.

“Parasite” made history at Sunday’s Academy Awards on a number of different levels. It was the first Korean feature to ever win an Oscar, the first Palme d’Or winner to also win Best Picture since “Marty” did it 64 years ago — and, biggest of all, the first film not in English to win the top award in the 92-year history of the Oscars.
The twisted black comedy about class differences, from a director known for horror movies and never before taken seriously by the Academy, beat Sam Mendes’ “1917,” which had won the Producers Guild and Directors Guild awards, usually sure-fire Oscar indicators. It also beat two epics from two massively influential American directors of different generations, Martin Scorsese’s elegiac “The Irishman” and Quentin Tarantino’s consummate “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” as well as the unexpected crowd-pleasers “Jojo Rabbit” and “Joker.”
None of this came as a real surprise,...

During his opening monologue at the Golden Globes last month, Ricky Gervais announced, “It was a big year for pedophile movies — ‘Surviving R. Up to a certain point, this year’s Oscars seem to be one of the most predictable in recent memory. The four acting races seem to have been decided long ago, and many of the other categories have strong frontrunners as well — if Roger Deakins doesn’t win Best Cinematography and “Parasite” isn’t named Best International Feature Film, 3,000 people in the Dolby Theatre will go into shock en masse.
But how much do we really know? Best Picture has a clear frontrunner but also the tantalizing possibility of an upset that wouldn’t surprise too many people. This might be a shorter, more accelerated awards season than usual, but don’t try to tell that to Quentin Tarantino. “It doesn’t feel short to me, because we’ve been talking about this movie since May,” he said of “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival and then began its theatrical run in late July.
“My last couple of movies came out at Christmas, so I was stuck in this logjam that happens at the end of the year. But this one was a pleasure, because it opened in summer and played like a summer movie, and people were talking about it and arguing about it for weeks after the movie came out. It didn’t even matter if they hated it or made fun of...

“1917” has won the Producers Guild of America’s award as the best-produced feature film of 2019, giving it an important victory at an awards show that usually honors the film that goes on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
The film, an immersive drama about World War I that was fashioned to look like a single shot, triumphed in a field that also included top Academy Award contenders “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” “The Irishman,” “Parasite” and “Joker.” While the PGA win makes it a de facto frontrunner of sorts in that race, this is a year in which the Oscar race still feels unsettled.
“Apollo 11” won the award for documentary feature, while “Toy Story 4” won for animated feature.

“Parasite” and “Jojo Rabbit” have won the top feature-film awards at the American Cinema Editors’ 70th Annual Ace Eddie Awards, which were handed out on Friday night in Beverly Hills.
Both winners are nominated for the film-editing Oscar, along with “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman” and “Joker.” Although those three films are more typical editing winners, “Parasite” beat them all in the Best Edited Feature Film (Drama) category, while “Jojo Rabbit” topped “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” for Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy).
The win for “Parasite” was only the second Ace Eddie win in history for a non-English film. In 2007, “Babel” tied with “The Departed” for the award.

No female director made it on to Monday’s list.
The Academy produced a fairly conservative list of nominees on Monday, and by ’conservative’, that means white and male in the general categories, with the odd sprinkling of well-liked talent from other quarters.
Nine films compete for the best picture Oscar and all the heavyweights are there, although there is no love for A24’s The Farewell after a season strewn with recognition. Of all the films that have impressed this season, many were established as frontrunners early on and there is one brilliant late arrival this year.
