I watched Fox's "Virtuality" despite knowing that Fox had axed before giving it a chance and liked it and was summarily bummed when it's short life was over. So when "Defying Gravity" from ABC came out, I was a little dubious because I thought it might be just another version of "Virtuality". Yes and no. The "yes" part is the bit with the ensemble cast on a years-long space mission dealing with an unknown outside interference but that's where the similarities seem to end. This show, while still a drama with plenty of angst and all that stuff, still has moments of light-heartedness thrown in so as not to take itself too seriously. I love seeing Ron Livingston as the droll and somewhat weary but likable Maddux Donner, the astronaut that he plays as coolly as his famous role of Pete Gibbons in "Office Space". The show vacillates between the astronauts' current journeys through our solar system and the flashbacks to their training phase at NASA. The characters are fleshed out a little bit more each episode and the writers did a good job by representing all walks of life here. I hope ABC re-news this show because there's nothing else like it on t.v. right now and it would be a shame to let this one go down the tubes.
