Jonathan Glazer's sci-fi thriller "Under The Skin" is the kind of film you call "indescribable." But because this is a written article and not a video essay, I will attempt to do the impossible. We don't know much about the main character in "Under The Skin." We believe she is an alien called Laura. As the film progresses, her eerie detachment morphs into something else entirely.
Presumably, Laura (Scarlett Johansson) has been sent to earth to harvest human specimens for unknown (but terrifying) purposes. Laura arrives in Northern Scotland sporting a perfectly unassuming British accent, luring unsuspecting men into her van and eventually taking them to a derelict house where they thoughtlessly follow her to their deaths. A threatening man on a motorcycle (played by real-life motorcycle racer Jeremy McWilliams) follows her to make sure she gets the job done.

A handsome little biopic that’s sopping wet with the same clichés that its whiny hero so adamantly disavows, Mark Gill’s “England Is Mine” distills the early days of one Steven Patrick Morrissey into an anonymous coming-of-age story that — if not for its keen sense of place — could really be about any mopey white boy whose talents are dulled by torpor. The film begins in the late ’70s, when young Steven is still living in his family’s splintered Stretford council house and writing flippant concert reviews for some local music rags; it ends a few years later, before he and Johnny Marr have yet to record their first track as The Smiths. This isn’t a portrait of an iconoclastic rock god, but of a brooding artist who thinks he’s far too good for such a boring town, and resents the fact that he should ever have...

Nope, no Audrey Horne on Twin Peaks this week. I think the solution to her ever-deepening mystery won’t be wrapped up for at least a few more episodes. And for the record, I do not believe she is an actress or somehow trapped inside the soap opera “Invitation To Love” from the original series. I mean, c’mon, think about it, that makes no sense. She’s an actress in a soap opera playing a character with her own name? A soap opera that references events taking place in her hometown? That’s completely absurd (right??). That theory is...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. What's an FBI Special Agent to do after being locked away for 25 years in unearthly purgatory? Episodes three and four of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks, which aired on Showtime this past Sunday in a two-hour block (aside from September's two-part finale, it's all single, hour-long episodes from hereon out), follow our besuited, Black Lodge-incarcerated hero Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) as he reintegrates into modern terrestrial society. So this is basically Peaks doing Rectify, just with a sterile death row replaced by an infernal hellscape out of Clive Barker. Or David Lynch, really. What's becoming more and more evident as the new Peaks progresses is that the series is, in large part, a repository for Lynch's subconscious, past and present.

CNN reports that the actor was inspired to run for office throughout President Donald Trump‘s election cycle.
“Brownley is a very junior member in the minority party,” Charles Moran, who is Sabato Jr.’s top fundraiser, told CNN.

Brad Paisley is tipping his cowboy hat to our U.S. veterans.

For good or ill, Aimee Mann has earned a stellar reputation as a purveyor of introspective, softly-strummed acoustic ballads that will make you reflect and possibly weep. That her two most recent albums—2012’s deliciously electro-poppy Charmer, and her seriously rocked-up 2014 partnership with Ted Leo for The Both—stray far from this territory apparently matters little. Her role as the tortured troubadour largely originated with her Academy Award-nominated work on the soundtrack to Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1999 film Magnolia (hear the gorgeous “Save Me“),if not the pair of engaging, critically acclaimed solo albums that proceeded it. 1993’s Whatever and...

This is where I'm supposed to summarize the past year, find some overaching theme or thread running through my choices, spot trends, or something along those lines. But these twenty new albums made me less grumpy.
1. Diiv: Is the Is Are (Captured Tracks)
I enjoyed their first album, and far from a sophomore slump, their second is even better. Sure, I'm heavily predisposed to love bands that conjure a moody '80s vibe with thrumming bass, chiming guitar jangle, and submerged vocals, but this is greater than the sum of those parts, simultaneously updating the sound while tapping into a new level of melodicism for this band.

Last year, my reviews for Ash Vs Evil Dead were more involved, nay, extensive on an episode-by-episode basis than they were this year. That’s because of two things. 1) time constraints and 2) the realization that this show isn’t written with as much texture as I wanted it to be. I still heart Ash Vs Evil Dead and everything, even if it makes some questionable choices here and there from time to time, but Westworld it ain’t. It’s hard to write reams and reams...

MaryAnn’s quick take…
Relentlessly dull. A tour of a strange world and “characters” little more than their “peculiar” abilities isn’t enough to whip up fantastical excitement. I’m “biast” (pro): I was a peculiar child, and I remain a peculiar adult; love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): mostly disappointed by Tim Burton lately
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
So it’s Harry Potter Lite. Very lite. No, wait: It’s X-Men Babies. In the land of Groundhog Day, or maybe in a Doctor Who-ish timey-wimey chronic hysteresis. Where they’re haunted by Slenderman. Later, there is a Bill & Ted reference. Remember the days when Tim Burton made movies that took your breath away with their originality? Where has that Tim Burton gone?
Okay, so lots of things are derivative. That’s not necessarily a dealbreaker.

But a one-sided take on a movie, in print, might be misconstrued as a review. As someone in the industry it could be detrimental to James’s career if he were to review his peers, because unlike the book industry—where writers review other writer’s books—the film industry is highly collaborative, and a bad review of a peer could create problems. So, assume that James (and Semaj) love all these films. What they’re interested in talking about is all the ways the films inspire them, and make them think. James is me, and Semaj is the other side of me.

Drew experienced the flashbacks of Camp Stillwater on Dead of Summer Season 1 Episode 4, while the affects of Amy being struck by lightning slowly began to show themselves, and Jessie actually became a character.
Below, TV Fanatics Yana Grebeyuk, Carissa Pavlica, Allison Nichols, and Caralynn Lippo discuss Jessie's redeeming moment and the direction of Drew and Blair's relationship.
Do the writers just want us to hate Jessie?
Yana: That's what I thought at first but now I think they were just paving the way for Jessie's story. Next week is about Joel, but they need to keep Jessie in the loop. She's not connected to any other character that had a flashback episode, so attaching her to Drew makes sense in terms of storytelling. But the way they made it work really didn't sit well with me. Jessie calling Drew ''Andrea'' and threatening to show everyone a video of him in...

We look back at an often-overlooked part of the Ghostbusters legacy: it's Extreme Ghostbusters...
There was a time when no one cared about Ghostbusters. It was the late 90s - the pre-Pokemon, post-Mighty Morphin Power Rangers days to be exact. Nobody’s kid was exactly clamouring for a sequel, reboot, or a Ghostbusters continuation of any kind - except for Dan Aykroyd, who was practically lobbying for a third instalment while sitting front row at the Ghostbusters II premiere. Which is why we have this: an awkwardly timed, tonally disruptive Ghostbusters animated series.
Enter a brand new cartoon that picked up the sticky, ectoplasm-covered mantle of The Real Ghostbusters and wore it slightly askew to evoke that wholesome sense of 1990s irreverence: Extreme Ghostbusters.
Living up to its name, Xgb was extreme indeed. One glance at its radically inclusive team line-up is all you need to notice that.

I've done this exercise before, and some of the same films made the list this time, but not all. America in 2016 is different than the America of 2002, and that's part of what I love about this country. And make no mistake... I love this country. I believe America is a nation defined by contradictions. I am both cynical and idealistic about it, and I love it precisely because of the ways it breaks my heart. I am fully aware that one can only exist because of the other. With that in mind, here are ten films that, taken together, define the state of our union in the year 2016. The Right Stuff Philip Kaufman’s movie celebrating the accomplishments of the Mercury Seven astronauts is more than just a celebration of the pioneer spirit. The film is a gorgeous dream, a poem about heroism and celebrity and ego and optimism. The...

When most people think of the best puppetry filmmaking has to offer, they usually think of the whimsy and heart of “The Muppets” or “Sesame Street.” The Jim Henson Company’s work is revered worldwide, and the feeling Kermit or Elmo can give to an audience as they perform a tune or dance a number is nothing short of magical.
Becky Sloan and Joseph Pelling are aware of this feeling. Their web series, “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared,” which just released its sixth episode, subverts the Henson musical experience. Under the guise of that cheerful tone, they tell stories with puppets who discover the world and become uncomfortable, disturbed, and, well, scared.

Apparently, Preacher’s Jesse never saw Spider-Man. So, unaware that with great power comes great responsibility, he let his “gift” get the better of him this week and, as a result, damn near shot someone without ever laying a finger on a gun. Who? How? Wait, what? Keep reading, and I’ll (do my best to) explain.

Documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville is hard to pin down. While he made his name with music docs, from Oscar-winner “20 Feet from Stardom” to Yo-Yo Ma concert film “The Music of Strangers” (HBO/The Orchard), he’s moving away from music subjects. “There are a handful of music docs I’d love to do, including David Bowie,” he said in a phone interview. “But at the moment I’m interested in stretching myself on projects on design, food, and art.”
Over the last year, Neville jumped into the debates between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley for “Best of Enemies,” (Participant/Magnolia) and took an unexpected ride with Chelsea Handler on Netflix documentary series “Chelsea Does.”
Netflix approached Neville after working with him on “Keith Richards: Under the Influence.” Said Neville, “I’d worked on music docs for years. It felt like writing a novel. By the time I got to Keith Richards,...

The cast of the "Gilmore Girls" revival keeps growing, with actor Dan Bucatinsky joining the series in an undisclosed role.
Bucatinsky, who's most known for his part on ABC's "Scandal," shared the news on social media this week, posting two photos to his Instagram account from the Stars Hollow set. The actor tagged "Gilmore" star Alexis Bledel in the snaps -- and posed with the actress in one of them -- indicating that his role involves Rory in some way. (He also said that Lauren Graham's Lorelai was not there, so perhaps this is for a Rory arc separate from her mother?)

As part of Deadline's coverage of The Silence of the Lambs' 25th anniversary, the site has published an extended interview with director Jonathan Demme, screenwriter Ted Tally and Robert Bookman, the agent who brokered the deal that brought Thomas Harris's bestselling novel to the big screen. In a previous piece, screenwriter Ted Tally revealed/reminded us that Gene Hackman had originally intended to write, direct and potentially play the role of Hannibal Lecter; this time around, the tidbit that caught my attention was the fact that the film's ending -- which in the finished film sees Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) stalking Frederick Chilton (Anthony Heald) through an island in the Bahamas -- was considerably darker in the original script. From the Deadline story: "The Silence of the Lambs ends when Hannibal Lecter, from a payphone in the tropics, congratulates FBI Academy graduate Clarice Starling and gently warns her not to hunt him,...

BBC Three put Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding’s wilfully shambolic live act and radio series, The Mighty Boosh, on TV…
Part of The Mighty Boosh’s delight comes from its unlikelihood as a TV sitcom. Its boundless Day-Glo imagination isn’t an immediate fit with the constraints of the form. A sunshine simpleton and his awkward, jazz-obsessed colleague meet mythic monsters and talking animals while performing expertly observed musical parody? It’s not exactly My Family.
As comedian, writer, and director of Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding’s 1999 Edinburgh show Arctic Boosh, Stewart Lee, put it, “No television exec would ever have gone ‘What we need is a kind of purple head with tentacles coming out of it which speaks like a member of the Small Faces’”.

Cupid has been hard at work on the campaign trail! From Hillary and Bill Clinton, to Donald and Melania Trump, to Bernie and Jane Sanders, presidential candidates on both sides of the aisle have been showing off their love for each other in sweet photos as they campaign for the White House. Bernie and Jane recently shared their romantic wedding proposal story with People. The Vermont senator pulled out all the stops because "when you do a proposal, it's a one-time thing. Holy hell, you guys! This is it! This signifies that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is really underway. Posted on his Instagram, Chris Pratt is holding in his hand Star-Lord's beloved Walkman, and inside is Awesome Mix Vol. 2! I loved the first movie, and the soundtrack truly was a character in and of itself. So I cannot wait to hear what's on this tape. I'm sure it'll set the pace, mood, and even story with inspired choices from James Gunn. Anything you're hoping for? I'll just throw this out there: David Bowie's, "Heroes".
Feels good to be back in action on Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2!!! I can't even tell you how excited I am. Ok I'll try. I'm ecstatic. I'm bursting with joy. I'm overwhelmed by feelings of enthusiasm, joy, gratitude, conviviality, camaraderie, elation, exhilaration. I just used an online thesaurus for these words. I suggest trying that.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz won the Iowa Republican caucuses Monday night. Party officials said more than 180,000 caucus-goers - a new record - showed up to cast their vote by secret ballot. With all of the state's 1,681 precincts reporting, Cruz won 28 percent of the vote, Donald Trump took 24 percent, and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio came in third with 23 percent. Cruz addressed his supporters about an hour after CNN announced his victory. "Let me first of all say, to God be the glory," he began. "Tonight is a victory for the grassroots. Tonight is a victory for courageous conservatives across Iowa and all across this great nation.

Friends and family gathered Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles, as fans gathered online worldwide, to pay tribute to Motörhead lead singer Ian Fraser Kilmister - aka Lemmy. Kilmister died in late December, just days after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, the band said. His passing was received by an outpouring of grief from musicians and other celebrities, including Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, Juliette Lewis, Ice T and others. For his memorial service, the band - which would be disbanding after Lemmy's death - planned something equally large: a global gathering in remembrance and celebration for a "warrior and a legend.

My review of tonight's penultimate "Fargo" of season 2 coming up just as soon as I show you what a South Dakota necktie looks like... "It's just a flying saucer, Ed!" -Peggy There's a Roger Ebert review that's always nagged at me, not because it should be impossible for me to disagree with my favorite critic growing up, but because the reason for the disagreement has always seemed so small to me. Back in the summer of 1988, Ebert gave the original "Die Hard" only 2 stars, complaining that the movie's abundant technical merits, not to mention Alan Rickman's performance as the heavy, weren't enough to get him past the introduction of Paul Gleason as the Lapd deputy chief who refuses to believe that John McClane is a cop, or has anything useful to offer him and his men. "As nearly as I can tell," Ebert wrote, "the deputy chief is in...
