On paper, Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove share a lot in common. They both began their professional careers as child models who went on to find early success as actors. While Shields rose to fame in late-’70s and ’80s films (Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon, Endless Love), Cosgrove made a name for herself in the aughts on small-screen sitcoms (iCarly, Drake & Josh). As young women growing up in Hollywood, they both became cultural touchstones for their respective generations but, in turn, were forced to weather intense scrutiny under the limelight.
In that respect, it seems particularly fitting that Shields and Cosgrove would team up to play mother and daughter in Mother of the Bride, which launched Thursday on Netflix. Directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Freaky Friday) and written by Robin Bernheim (The Princess Switch), the breezy new romantic comedy follows Shields’ Lana, a widowed single mother and world-renowned...

Looking Back On Brooke Shields’ Docuseries
Pretty Baby addressed a lot of the sexualization Brooke Shields was subjected to as a young actress in Hollywood. She grew up in the spotlight, with some of her first jobs starting when she was an infant. The 1977 film Pretty Baby, which the documentary is named after, essentially globalized the sexualization of the child star.

Austin, TX – One thing that SXSW attracts are movie stars. With the big premieres headquartered at the famous art deco Paramount Theatre in Austin, audiences were treated to appearances by the legendary Susan Sarandon (“Gutter”), a reunited Cheech & Chong, and for the creme de la creme we were in the “Cage.” The great Nicolas Cage appeared on behalf of “Arcadian.”

Brooke Shields is often considered one of the greatest child actors of all time. While every young fan wanted to have a life like hers, there’s always the flip side of the coin. In a world obsessed with the curated perfection celebrities project, the truth begins to crackle through the facade: the price of child stardom is often far steeper than applause.

Ask enough people what they think about psychics and clairvoyants, and you’ll probably get eye-rolls. Whether referencing the storefront tarot readers or the more seriously minded seers who perform seances and communicate with those who have transitioned into the afterlife, the impression of this spiritual trade is generally disbelief. What’s unique about director Lana Wilson’s latest documentary, which primarily highlights seven psychics living in various parts of New York City, is that it never aims to persuade you against that reaction. In this deeply moving, compassionate exploration, determining whether this small and goofy group actually has real powers is beside the point.

Few faces have been more ubiquitous. In the early 1980s, Brooke Shields was the most famous teenager in the country, gracing magazine covers, appearing in ads, starring in movies — and generating controversy. Even before she declared that nothing came between her and her Calvins, the young star had shocked the world by portraying a 12-year-old prostitute in the 1978 film Pretty Baby. In candid interviews, the eloquent Shields details the ups and downs of life as an icon and reveals painful truths, such as postpartum depression, a sexual assault, and her loving but strained relationship with her alcoholic mother, Teri. Here are three more of many fascinating stops along the way. 1. Cameras were rolling for her first kiss. On the set of Pretty Baby, director Louis Malle was frustrated she was scrunching up her face up for her character’s first ...

Hulu has acquired rights to “The Contestant,” a documentary about an aspiring comedian who unknowingly becomes the most famous TV star in Japan.
Clair Titley directed the movie, which premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival to positive reviews. “The Contestant” will launch on Hulu in 2024.
The documentary tells the stranger-than-fiction story of Tomoaki Hamatsu, nicknamed Nasubi, who auditioned for a TV show in 1998. The premise of “Denpa Shonen: A Life in Prizes,” the series that eventually made him a household name in Japan, left Nasubi naked in an empty room for more than a year and tasked him with filling out magazine sweepstakes to earn food, clothes and other necessities. But he had no idea he was becoming wildly famous in Japan as the series was broadcast to more than 15 million people.

Brooke Shields is recalling a certain encounter she had with former President Donald Trump in the 1990s during her new cabaret act, Fame Is Weird.
During an interview with The New York Times, she discussed the opener to her act: a story about Trump asking her to date him.
“I was making some movie in the late ’90s. My phone rang, and it was him,” she recalled.
According to Shields, Trump boldly said, “You and I should date. You’re America’s sweetheart, and I’m the world’s richest man. People will love it.”
When recounting the offer, Shields admits that she was holding back laughter as she told Trump, “Thank you, I’m very flattered, but I have a boyfriend, and I don’t think he would appreciate me stepping out on him.”

Writers Guild of America members and scribes for The Drew Barrymore Show picketed outside CBS Studios in New York on Monday as the daytime talker resumed filming amid the writers and actors strikes.

After shooting the Taylor Swift documentary Miss Americana, deconstructing another pop icon in Brooke Shields was an organic segue for filmmaker Lana Wilson. When Ryan White’s phone jolted to life the morning of July 12, buzzing with texts and calls, the filmmaker wasn’t expecting it. Yes, it was Emmy nomination day, but no, he hadn’t counted on recognition for his Netflix documentary about Pamela Anderson.
Yet there it was, in black and white on the Emmys.com website: For Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Pamela, A Love Story, about the actress and former Playboy Playmate who swept from Canada onto television screens, magazine covers and scandal sheets in the 1990s.
“I think if you went back two and a half years or three years, whenever I first met Pamela, I think we would’ve both burst into laughter if you had told us that we were going make an Emmy-nominated film,” White says. “That was not the goal at all. And I don’t think either of us thought that was a possibility.

This review contains spoilers for the show's visual surprises.
The original 1985 "Back to the Future" movie is a fantasy. It's a teen time travel fantasy about knocking sense into your disappointing parents and ensuring they grow into better people. It's a fantasy where "If You Put Your Mind To It, You Can Accomplish Anything" pays dividends as an adage. It's also a visual effects dream — courtesy of its director-screenwriter Robert Zemeckis and Ilm — that rode the waves of critical and commercial success, two sequels, pop culture homages, and now a "Back to the Future: The Musical."
The famed DeLorean time machine skids onto Broadway's Winter Garden stage, as the West End version dances on. Within a few blinding flashes, the vehicle pops up like magic thanks to Chris Fisher's illusion work and Tim Lutkin & Hugh Vanstone's tactful lighting. Its 3D scan designed by Tim Hatley, the DeLorean feels alive.

Good news for people who grew up delighting in the weirdo charms of Marty McFly and the DeLorean: The new, two-and-a-half-hour “Back to the Future” musical — which officially opened on Broadway Thursday night — is an incredibly faithful retelling of the 1985 movie, down to classic lines (“My dad’s a peeping Tom!”) and awkward as hell relationship drama.
As for everyone else? Well, that’s where the trouble begins in this musical that, for better or worse, often feels more like an amusement park experience than an art production. The thrill ride even begins before the show officially starts, with the whole outer stage and wings set up to look like an ‘80s video game, with scrolling neon lights and mechanical sounds.
Written by Bob Gale (who originally co-wrote the film), the plot is exactly the one you remember. Everyday teenage boy Marty McFly accidentally goes back in time 30 years, thanks...

Brooke Shields came up in a different time. The model and actress has been working since infancy, and when she shot to superstardom in the ’70s and ’80s, she became a lucrative commodity whose own opinion was rarely heard, but became the focus of many other people’s opinions.
This is all explored in her two-part documentary, “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” which hails from ABC News Studios and launched on Hulu earlier this year. Produced by Ali Wentworth, George Stephanopoulos and director Lana Wilson (Taylor Swift’s “Miss Americana”), the doc that received rave reviews out of its premiere at Sundance uses Shields’ story of being sexualized as a child to paint a bigger picture of the treatment of women in society.
Speaking to Variety, Shields says that she hopes to be a “conduit” for a larger conversation. She believes things have improved in the industry, and hopes the public...

A version of this interview with Brooke Shields and “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields” director Lana Wilson originally ran in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Brooke Shields was once the most famous teenager in the world. A model at 11 months old, by high school she had played a child prostitute in Louis Malle’s controversial 1978 film “Pretty Baby” and starred in a series of provocative Calvin Klein jeans ads in which she uttered the now iconic line, “You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.” Over the years, Shields has fielded no shortage of offers to tell her story on camera, but she wasn’t comfortable doing so until now, with “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” directed by Lana Wilson (“Miss Americana”) and exec-produced by Ali Wentworth and George Stephanopoulos. The two-part Hulu documentary chronicles Shields’ rise to superstardom, her complicated relationship with her mother,...

Brooke Sheilds takes control of the narrative by sharing her story in her own words in the Hulu documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, from director Lana Wilson.
From Matador Content and BedBy8 for ABC News Studio, the film follows Shields from her early years as a blossoming model and actress to her present day as a powerful woman, mother, wife and performer with a career spanning more than four decades. It also touches on her complicated relationship with her mother and manager Teri Shields and how working on early projects including Louis Malle’s Pretty Baby, Randal Kleiser’s The Blue Lagoon and Franco Zeffirelli’s Endless Love — all before age 16 — left her vulnerable to public criticism and unwanted attention from adult men.
Now, Shields is ready to tell her story in her own words.

Busy Philipps brought a special date to the "Single Drunk Female" season two premiere: her eldest child, Birdie Leigh Silverstein. The actor and her 14-year-old mini-me hit the red carpet together at New York City's Midnight Theatre on April 11 and looked like two peas in a pod while posing for the cameras. Philipps, a new cast addition for the Freeform series, wore a black maxi dress and white blazer, while Birdie wore an orange satin slip dress and flats and later borrowed their mom's blazer.
The following morning, Philipps shared a lengthy Instagram caption about her experience starring in "Single Drunk Female" and mentioned how much fun Birdie had at the season two screening. "Last night at the premiere, Birdie flipped out to meet Ally Sheedy," she wrote, adding that her child also bonded with Sheedy's mother, Charlotte, during the event. Brooke Shields revealed that The Blue Lagoon director Randal Kleiser has tried to contact her after the release of her new Hulu documentary Pretty Baby.
In the documentary, the actor and supermodel accused Kleiser of wanting “to sell my sexual awakening.”
Shields starred in the 1980 film alongside Christopher Atkins. Aged 14 and 18 at the time of filming, respectively, Shields and Atkins played cousins who were stranded on a deserted island.
As the characters matured into adulthood, they fell in love and had a child together.
Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show on Tuesday (11 April), Shields was asked whether any of the male directors she mentions in the documentary have reached out to her.
“I saw [Kleiser’s] name on my phone, and I was like, ‘Oh, what do I do?’ and I let it go to voicemail,” Shields said. “Because I was like, ‘I want to see what the tone is.’ He wants to chat.

Brooke Shields revealed that “The Blue Lagoon” director Randal Kleiser reached out to her after documentary “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields” aired on Hulu.
The two-part doc, which debuted at 2023 Sundance, examines the early sexualization of Shields in part during Kleiser’s 1980 film when she was 14 years old. Kleiser, who also produced the movie, allegedly called Shields following the doc premiere.
“I saw his name on my phone and I was like, ‘What do I do?’ and I let it go to voicemail because I was like, I want to see what the tone is,” Shields said during “The Drew Barrymore Show.”
Shields continued, “And he wants to chat, I don’t know about what. I don’t feel like bringing any of it back up again.”
“The Blue Lagoon” stars Shields and Christopher Atkins as cousins-turned-lovers who consummate their relationship after their boat is shipwrecked in the South Pacific. Both leads were nude onscreen.

Brooke Shields revealed on “The Drew Barrymore Show” that she received a phone call from “The Blue Lagoon” director Randal Kleiser following the release of her new Hulu documentary “Pretty Baby.” In the documentary, the supermodel and actor called out “The Blue Lagoon” for exploiting her sexual awakening when she was just 14 years old.

In the Sundance documentary premiere “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” the titular actor and model talks candidly about her struggles with fame at a young age. One of the most emotional interviews included in the film sees Shields describe an alleged sexual assault in her early twenties at the hands of an unnamed film producer.
Although the interview is an important part of the film, director Lana Wilson, who previously directed Taylor Swift’s “Miss Americana” documentary, wasn’t sure it would make the final cut. In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Wilson revealed that, although she otherwise had full creative control over the finished film, she made an exception and made sure she had Shields’ full approval to use the interview about her sexual assault in the final cut.
“‘I want you to feel completely comfortable with it if it goes out into the world,'” Wilson recalled telling Shields to Yahoo.

For most of their 21-year marriage, George Stephanopoulos and Ali Wentworth have operated on separate career tracks. He is an Emmy-winning ABC News host and political commentator and she is the “Jerry Maguire” actress-turned-New York Times best-selling author-turned host of the hit iHeardRadio podcast “Go Ask Ali.” But those boundaries crumbled while they were stuck at home together during the Covid pandemic, with the couple deciding to team up on a shared endeavor: the production company BedBy8.
“Let’s not deny that being empty-nesters kind of played a part,” says Wentworth, who is the mother of two adult daughters with Stephanopoulos. “We thought, ‘Wow, we have so many stories to tell.’ And we can sort of stay in our lanes within the company.”
Founded in 2021 with their partner Alyssa Mastromonaco, BedBy8 focuses on scripted TV projects, limited series and documentaries. Two years in, Stephanopoulos and Wentworth have their first BedBy8 credit under their belt,...

Brooke Shields came pretty close to starring in Stephen Frears’ 1988 period drama “Dangerous Liaisons” alongside John Malkovich, Glenn Close, Michelle Pfeiffer and Keanu Reeves. “They told me it came down to me and someone else,” Shields tells me. “They said the other person was this girl not many people knew about. It was Uma Thurman. At that time and that age, it felt so personal, but I’ve learned over time not to take it personally because ‘no’ outweighs ‘yes’ extensively in this business.”
Released by Warner Bros., “Dangerous Liaisons” went on to be nominated for seven Oscars, eventually taking home the awards for adapted screenplay, costume design and production design. Christopher Hampton adapted the screenplay from his 1985 play “Les Liaisons dangereuses.” The $14 million film grossed $34.7 million at the box office.

We had seriously considered an April Fool’s edition of Don’t-Miss Indies this month full of Latvian Redbox actioners, but thought better of such trickery at the eleventh hour. After all, our beloved constituents deserve better than a perplexing blurb about The Humanity Bureau starring Nicolas Cage. And anyway there are too many great, legitimate titles to skip. Brooke Shields has been in the public eye since she was just 11 months old, but it's taken her 57 years to embrace her power as an actor, model, and businesswoman. In Pretty Baby, a new documentary from Lana Wilson (who previously directed Taylor Swift documentary Miss Americana), Shields examines just how far she's come after a career of being objectified by Hollywood and commodified by American culture. Across two episodes, the multi-hyphenate reflects on her controversial role in Louis Malle's 1978 film Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love's impact on her public image and sense of self, her complicated relationship with her mother and manager, Teri, and her brief marriage to tennis player Andre Agassi. Shields also alleges she was raped by a film executive when she was in her twenties, and she opens up about the blame she placed upon herself in the aftermath.

“Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” a documentary about Brooke Shields and the sexual objectification she endured as a child actor, arrives on Hulu today.
In the two-part documentary, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, the actor and model opens up for the first time about her earliest experiences in Hollywood. The film tracks her rise as a child advertising model to her sexualization in movies, starting at age 12, in “Pretty Baby” (1978), and then at 15, in “The Blue Lagoon” (1980).
“I spent my life owing people things and doing whatever they wanted,” Shields says in a new teaser dropped Wednesday morning. “I finally asked myself, ‘What will I be if I don’t allow that anymore?'”
Shields’ experience with older men on set as a child is a common theme in her recollections.

In a new two-part documentary, actress, model, and author Brooke Shields tells another side of her story. “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields” revisits her upbringing in the spotlight, beginning when she was just 11 months old. It also examines how she was seen as just a “pretty girl” and heavily sexualized in the media from the time she was just a child. The two episodes drop on Hulu on Monday, April 3. You can watch with a 30-Day Free Trial of Hulu.

Brooke Shields has spoken about how her first kiss was with a 29-year-old actor when she was just 11.
In the new Hulu documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, the actor, now 57, opens up about the exploitation and sexualisation she experienced as a child star.
Shields appeared as a child sex worker in the 1978 film Pretty Baby, directed by the late French filmmaker Louis Malle.
For one scene, Shields had to kiss actor Keith Carradine (Dexter; Nashville), who was in his late twenties at the time.
In the documentary, Shields describes the incident, recalling that Malle grew frustrated at the face she pulled while kissing (per TVInsider).
According to Shields, Carradine took her to one side and offered reassurance.
“‘Hey,’ he said to me. ‘You know what? This doesn’t count. This is all make-believe’,” she said.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, the documentary’s director Lana Wilson said: “This is a moment...

Brooke Shields’ Hollywood journey speaks volumes about the ways young girls have been sexualized and exploited in Tinseltown and beyond.
In Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, a two-part documentary premiering April 3 on Hulu, the actress and activist opens up about her deeply unsettling modeling and acting career, from a family friend trying to publish nude photos of her taken at 10 years of age (he successfully won the right to do so in court), to appearing nude at 15 in the 1980 film Blue Lagoon.
“The film and Brooke’s story, to me, is not only about Hollywood.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

Using the genre trappings of the superhero origin story, Amazon’s new drama The Power explores society’s preoccupation with and fear of pubescent girls. The series, which I’m not actually reviewing here, delves into how vast corners of the law and organized religion have been unconsciously or very consciously advanced to deny those girls agency. In the case of The Power, that agency arrives not in the form of legislation or a Supreme Court verdict, but as an evolutionary ability to generate and wield electricity. The patriarchy is in for a shock!
