Two very different animated features lead the way as the 48th annual Annie Awards nominations were announced today. Disney/Pixar’s Soul and Cartoon Saloon’s Wolfwalkers scored 10 noms apiece ahead of the virtual trophy show on April 16. Read the full list of nominees in 31 categories below.
Wolfwalkers, a “relatively small European movie,” as the filmmakers described it — is rooted in the history of 1650s Ireland, while Soul follows a middle school music teacher’s journey to “the Great Beyond” via “the Great Before.”
Soul will vie for the marquee Best Feature prize at the Annies, going up against another Pixar pic — Onward, which scooped seven noms — along with Netflix’s The Willoughbys and a pair of DreamWorks Animation sequels: The Croods: A New Age and Trolls World Tour. Willoughbys and Croods picked up six noms each today, and Trolls rocked away with four.

Pixar’s ethereal “Soul” and Cartoon Saloon’s exquisitely hand-drawn “Wolfwalkers” — the two animated Oscar frontrunners — both grabbed 10 nominations each at Asifa-Hollywood’s 48th Annie Awards (to be streamed live on April 16). Pixar collected another seven nominations from “Onward” to dominate the feature competition.
“Soul” and “Wolfwalkers” are both expected to come away with the top prize from their respective best feature and best indie feature categories, but they compete head to head for direction (Pete Docter and Kemp Powers vs. Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart), FX, character animation, character design, production design, score, storyboarding, and writing. “Soul” was additionally nominated for editorial, and “Wolfwalkers” for voice acting. But Jamie Foxx, who voiced “Soul’s” jazz pianist, Joe Gardner, was surprisingly overlooked.

Let's get one thing straight before we begin. Bill Murray is the King. There are better actors. There are people who have better filmographies. There are even funnier people, although not many. But Bill Murray is, all things, considered, the King. I've dedicated much of the last 45 years working this out scientifically, and I am prepared to finally share the findings with you, free of charge, right here at HitFix. Ostensibly, we're doing this because of this weekend's release of "Rock The Kasbah," but that's just an excuse. The truth is that it's important that we rank all 55 of Bill Murray's film performances, with a special focus on the top 25. We are not including his television work here. There are films on this list we have not seen, but not many. We decided to leave those films unranked, so here is that list: Unranked "The Hat Act" "Pass The Buck: Expo '74...

Regular readers of this space know my first true love is the city of Chicago, and that I’ll use any excuse to cop a visit to my fatherland. That’s where I was this past week, and I did not need an excuse. The 15th annual Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention was in town, and, therefore, so was I.
It’s a great chance to meet up with old friends and make a couple new ones, all the while gawking at ancient publications printed on ever-deteriorating paper, more permanent facsimile reprints of same, and brand new efforts that replicate the mood, techniques and often the characters of those thrilling days of yesteryear. As my pal Jim Wisniewski says, the comradery echoes the days when comic book conventions were social occasions accessible to all… and were actually about comic books.

Dancing with the Stars returned Tuesday night to announce who would be the next couple eliminated from the celebrity dancing show.
Dancing With The Stars Recap
In jeopardy this week were Michael Waltrip and Emma Slater, Sadie Robertson and Mark Ballas and Tavis Smiley and Sharna Burgess, the last of whom ended up getting eliminated. The talk show host, who had performed a cha cha to Earth, Wind and Fire’s “Boogie Wonderland,” was hindered throughout the week by book signings and other commitments that took away from his rehearsal time.
Though Tavis was admittedly disappointed to have to say goodbye to the out-of-character experience so soon, he said he has no regrets. “I do not live a life of regret, the art of dance I absolutely love,” he said.
On the results show, Janel Parish and Val Chmerkovkiy were selected by the Twitterverse for the encore performance, as Len Goodman...

Time to revisit the days of the double feature when Grindhouse (2007) plays at the Tivoli Friday and Saturday as part of the Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight film series this weekend (May 2nd and 3rd).
The Beast Must Die with The Spectre Of Edgar Allen Poe. Old Dracula with Squirm. The Devil’S Rain with The Giant Spider Invasion. These are just a few of the many double features I saw on the big screen back in the 1970’s (not to mention the hundreds of double and triple features I caught at the drive-ins back then) –now’s your chance to relive those days
Grindhouse was incredibly risky, and for that it paid the price of box-office disappointment. I don’t know many people who liked both Planet Terror and Deathproof equally. Yes, they’re both exploitation pictures, but one...

The Last Mile captures a reflective Nelson Mandela following his release from prison and depicts a hopeful president-in-waiting
Of the many films made about Nelson Mandela's life, none gets as close to the anti-apartheid hero as The Last Mile, a documentary following the Anc leader on his first trip around west Africa after his release from prison in 1990.
It's a unique film because of director Jennifer Pogrund's relationship with Mandela – her father, the journalist Benjamin Pogrund, knew the Anc leader before he was imprisoned. This gave her the access to capture Mandela in intimate and reflective mood in footage that's not been seen for 20 years.
The film reflects the conciliatory, almost mystical mood of a man who emerged from prison as a mediator, philosopher and president-in-waiting. Throughout their first week travelling through Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal, Mandela reflects on everything from his childhood to his hopes for an...

I see movies. I’m also on Facebook. Sometimes, the two worlds collide, and I end up shooting the shit about movies with others on Facebook.
Some of these others are of the more interesting sort, whether by background or disposition (or, in some very special cases, both) – and they certainly came out of the woodwork to discuss last week’s giant release, the long-awaited Man of Steel. When I started to voice my uneasiness with the film’s now-infamous ending, an involved (for social media) and, dare I say, interesting conversation ensued. Given the people involved, what they said, and the simple fact that Corona Coming Attractions never published a review on the film, I thought it might be worthwhile to share with others here.

Monty Python's 1983 film "The Meaning of Life" effortlessly set the gold standard in sketch comedy movies -- which, for clarification, we'll define here as feature-length anthologies of stand-alone comic bits that don't serve to push along any overarching storyline. But while the Pythons' greatest film (gauntlet thrown down!) omitted a plot, their skits were still tied together by the most timeless of through lines: the trials of human life, presented in chapters like "The Miracle of Birth," "Middle Age" and "Death." Furthermore, 1971's "And Now For Something Completely Different," a re-filmed compilation of greatest hits from the first two pioneering seasons of "Monty Python's Flying Circus," is arguably the silver medalist of its kind, and good luck coming up with a third film that actually deserves the bronze.
The cold, hard truth is that sketch comedy movies are nearly impossible to pull off, and most are doomed to fail the test of time.
