It’s turning out to be quite a summer for superspies and supercomputers.
A month after the action feast of “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part I”, in which Tom Cruise faced off with an AI supervillain called “the Entity,” comes a very “Mi”-like international espionage thriller with an equally fancy and powerful machine.
“Heart of Stone” stars Gal Gadot as Rachel Stone, an agent for an elite and clandestine intelligence agency called the Charter. Like “Mission: Impossible”, “Heart of Stone” hits glamorous global destinations and features lengthy actions sequence including a wingsuit skydive.

In the final moments of Tom Harper’s “Heart of Stone”, the Netflix spy caper edges as close as it ever does to a joke. As the various players in the film race to possess the powerful artificial intelligence known as “The Heart” (told you), the tech goes offline, inspiring one character to tell another that the best course of action is to turn it off, then back on again. Ah, if only.
As A.I. chatter starts to consume a fractured Hollywood, it’s only natural that such concerns have already made their way into our movies. Earlier this summer, even Tom Cruise took it on with his “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” which follows super-spy Ethan Hunt as he attempts to steal back an all-powerful A.I. that threatens the safety of the world. Netflix isn’t too far behind the ball, as “Heart of Stone” similarly...

Gal Gadot has made her fair share of action films, from her role as the Amazonian princess Diana in “Wonder Woman” and the DC universe to Netflix’s “Red Notice” to the long-running “Fast and Furious” franchise. But after those films, Gadot was eager to do more in the action space — specifically from a female point of view. So she willed “Heart of Stone” into being.
With Gadot’s new Netflix movie, the actress and producer on the project wanted to do more. “I grew up watching ‘Bond,’ and ‘Mission: [Impossible],’ and ‘Bourne Identity’ and ‘Die Hard,'” Gadot told TheWrap in an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike. “I love these movies. I love the action, and the twists and turns and drama, the scope. I want to make movies that the audience can come in and we can take them through a journey for two hours, and make...

Ever since the first season of “The Crown” debuted on Netflix in 2016, fans have wondered what the royal family thinks of the fictional representation of their family and some of their biggest life events.
More recently, now that “The Crown” season 5 is streaming, there have been calls for a disclaimer to be added to creator Peter Morgan’s historical drama to further clarify that the series is a fictional account of events involving the royal family.
Over the years, there have been stories told about how the real-life royals feel about the show, with some members of the family even speaking out about the wildly popular series. Here’s a look at those accounts.

Exclusive: Sex Education’s Connor Swindells said he felt privileged to land the lead role in the stonking BBC One WW2 desert warfare drama Sas Rogue Heroes, and he praised director, Tom Shankland (The Serpent) “for considering me for this, because this isn’t something that comes my way.”
The six-part drama, written and created by Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight and from Kudos, is based on Ben Macintyre’s 2016 bestselling authorized wartime history of the Sas.
Swindells, proudly working-class, said that he was apprehensive about auditioning for the part of David Archibald Stirling, a Scots Guard officer and scion of a grand Scottish family with bloodlines stretching back on his mother’s side to King Charles II, and son of a WW1-decorated army general.
“I hadn’t been in those conversations for these types of roles, and it was really Tom Shankland that championed me so much. He really...

Renewals and trailer debuts were on the agenda for Netflix this week and the strategy paid off with viewers. On Variety’s Trending TV chart for the week of June 6 to 12, the streaming service secured eight of the Top 10 spots with overall mentions and engagements on Twitter.
“Stranger Things” was this week’s winner with more than 638,000 engagements, continuing a three-week run at the top following the show’s fourth-season return on May 27. The horror drama continued to be a buzzy topic with viewers as they caught up and dove into the storylines.
The build-up for Season 4 Part 2 was another reason for the continued chatter. Creatives promised that the finale contains more special effects than the entire third season. The show also dropped a new trailer ahead of the two-episode return on July 1.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about the series finale of Peaky Blinders…: Before it debuts on Netflix on June 10 in the U.S. and other markets, period gangster epic Peaky Blinders‘ sixth and final season concluded with a feature-length episode on BBC One in the UK tonight. Created by Steven Knight, who cautioned me before the finale to “expect the unexpected,” Peaky went out in top and twisty form with operatic and Godfather-esque flourishes. Since debuting in 2013, and gaining a rabid global fanbase, the Shelby family is meeting its end as a TV series, however, Knight has confirmed that a movie is going to happen — and given how the finale played out, there is still much to explore.
So, how did this iteration wrap things up for Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and the rest of the Birmingham crew? Throughout this season, we’ve been reminded of the words...

Keira Knightley embodies the French writer as she undergoes a transformation through the course of Wash Westmoreland's film, from a naive provincial who becomes increasingly liberated as her books about saucy schoolgirl Claudine - sold under the name of her husband Willy (Dominic West) - begin to sell like hot cakes. Westmoreland allows the complexity to shine in the relationship between Colette and Willy, as Colette blossoms and begins to take control of her own story, while Denise Gough puts in a scene-stealing supporting performance as Missy, with whom Colette engages in a same-sex relationship. Read what Westmoreland had to say about the influence of Max Ophüls, La Belle Époque and on the relationships in Colette, plus our full review.

As principal photography has wrapped in the UK on Eva Husson’s ‘Mothering Sunday’ featuring Josh O’Connor, a first look image has been released.
The film, which stars Odessa Young, O’Connor, Oscar winner Colin Firth, Oscar winner Olivia Colman and Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù centres on March 30, 1924, in Beechwood, England. Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young), a maid in the Niven household, has the day off to celebrate Mothering Sunday while Mr and Mrs Niven (Colin Firth and Olivia Colman) attend a lunch to celebrate the engagement of their neighbour’s only remaining son, Paul (Josh O’Connor).
Although Jane rejoices at her freedom on an unseasonably hot, beautiful spring day, she has no mother to go to—and for almost seven years she has, joyfully and without shame, been Paul’s lover. Like the Nivens, Paul belongs to England’s old- monied social class, whereas Jane was orphaned at birth. With the house conveniently empty,...

Keira Knightley stars as French novelist Colette in director Wash Westmoreland’s gorgeous and gripping period biopic Colette. What a marvelous film!
In late 19th- early20th century Paris, Colette broke barriers of all sorts for women. Although the story is set in Paris more than a century ago, this tale of a woman’s awakening to her own worth, her struggle to be free and be herself, and to be recognized for her own work is as thrilling as ever, and surprisingly timely.
Although the film is about a French writer, Westmoreland’s film is mostly in English. The film is a take on Colette as a feminist icon. Those who might quibble that Colette was not a feminist as much as just a woman...

Sweeping international shoots, comprehensive historical research,
meticulous costume and music selections, a complex dance between writers and producers — the sheer amount of thought, research and money that went into building the complex and intricate worlds for this year’s limited-series Emmy nominees was infinitely large in scope despite the shorter screen time.
Creating such rich landscapes for the characters was no small feat. From the 1960s to 2000s decades-jumping saga of Showtime’s “Patrick Melrose,” to the gritty streets of New York at the turn of the 19th century in TNT’s “The Alienist,” to Pablo Picasso in National Geographic’s “Genius,” and Andrew Cunanan’s killing spree in the mid-1990s for FX’s “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” these series’ showrunners all agree on one thing: research was fundamental when it came time to bringing these worlds to life.

Saoirse Ronan as Florence Ponting and Billy Howle as Edward Mayhew in On Chesil Beach, a Bleeker Street release. Photo: Robert Viglasky / Bleeker Street ©
Both romantic and searing, On Chesil Beach stars Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle as a couple whose marriage feels the impact that sex, and the sexual attitudes of a time period, can have on love. Based on Ian McEwan’s 2007 Booker Prize-winning novella. McEwan also wrote the screenplay for the moving, heartbreaking drama, in which Dominic Cooke makes his film directorial debut.
Saoirse Ronan plays Florence and Billy Howle plays Edward, a young English couple just married and spending their wedding night at a Dorset hotel near Chesil Beach in 1962. Both are nervous and virgins but they are in love. In 1962, Britain still has one foot in the stifling social restrictions and sexual repression of the post-war 1950s, with the changes of the ’60s just on the horizon,...

Jim Broadbent as Tony Webster, in The Sense Of An Ending. Photo by Robert Viglasky ©. Courtesy of CBS Films
Memory is a funny thing. One can feel so certain of one’s own memories that it is jarring when others’ recollection of events does not match.
The tricks of memory are at the heart of the unforgettable The Sense Of An Ending, director Ritesh Batra’s screen adaptation of Julian Barnes’ short novel. In this American/British film, Jim Broadbent stars as Tony Webster, a curmudgeonly older man who lives alone, opening his tiny camera repair shop daily and seeming to live a joyless existence. His shop only sells and repairs old Leica cameras, and he seems to regard the occasional customer more as an interruption than the reason for this business. His dull routine is interrupted by the arrival of a letter, informing him he as been left something in a will.

When Mr. Batra was in New York, I got the chance to have a fabulous conversation with him about making the movie, working with that incredible cast and so much more.

You only need to watch about 90 seconds of Taboo to realize that it obviously has Peaky Blinders‘ Steven Knight behind it. Give it another five minutes and it’s hard to keep from expecting Cillian Murphy to walk around a corner. For that show’s cult following, the sell is probably over with the trailer. If grimy period pieces that serve as showcases for the costume department and feature characters that give off an air that suggests they might start slaughtering people at any moment are your bag, you know all you need to.
Those who need more will find anything they might be looking for in Tom Hardy‘s eerie depiction of a man who returns from Africa to take over his father’s business. James Delaney is a man with a checkered past, who left for Africa ten years ago and spent much of that time presumed dead.
