Jared Leto isn't taking the stage at tonight's Grammy Awards, but he took the red carpet by storm in La with his band, Thirty Seconds to Mars. He looked dapper in a long black coat with gold and red accents with his brother Shannon - who accompanied him to a few other award shows this season - and bandmate Tomo Milicevic. Singer and Fifty Shades of Grey star Rita Ora also jumped in on a few of their photos, and Jared posed and hugged her excitedly. But the real fun happened when Jared was spotted with Steven Tyler and Smokey Robinson. Looks like Matthew McConaughey has some bromance competition on his hands! It was actually Jared's music that kept him away from acting for six years, as he focused on his band and its two latest albums, This Is War in 2009 and Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams in 2013, before he made Dallas Buyers Club.

Awards season meteorologists (should we say astrologists?) are abuzz with predictions of possible gold in Jared Leto's future for "Dallas Buyers' Club:" the Matthew McConaughey star vehicle also features Leto's much-lauded performance of Rayon, a transgendered AIDS patient. It's Leto's first film role in four years (his last was the 2009 sci-fi drama "Mr. Nobody"), and in the meantime, Leto has spent nearly every waking hour of his life with Thirty Seconds to Mars, the rock band he leads along with his brother Shannon and Tomo Miličević, recording music and touring the world. Leto's directorial debut, the documentary "Artifact," hits iTunes today—originally planned as a making-of chronicle of the band's third album, "This Is War," it transformed into a music industry war documentary about Leto and Thirty Seconds to Mars's marathon contractual fight with their record label, Emi. Jared Leto has had many public identities, starting with his breakthrough role as the inscrutable (and illiterate) love interest of Claire Danes on My So-Called Life. Since then he's proven to be one of his generation's most committed actors, losing 28 pounds to star as a heroin addict in Requiem for a Dream and gaining 60 pounds to play John Lennon's assassin in Chapter 27. But Leto left aside a thriving film career – which also included Fight Club and American Psycho – to remake himself as the lead singer of the rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars.

The film documents the grueling struggle between the band and their record label, Virgin/Emi over their album "This is War." FilmBuff will release it across all leading VOD platforms on December 3. "I hope that artists and audiences watch this film and get a greater understanding of how things really work in the record industry, because understanding is the beginning of change," said Jared Leto in a statement. "And whether they like it or not, change is coming. We battled a massive record corporation, challenged an entire industry, fought for our creative lives, and it was worth every single second. Star & Dagger, an all-female blues rock unit founded by former White Zombie bassist Sean Yseult, recently released their debut album Tomorrowland Blues. and the track “In My Blood” is now accompanied by an ambitious video which pays shot-by-shot homage to Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror classic The Shining. Of course, Star & Dagger isn't the first band to quote the iconic imagery from that film, and probably won't be the last (the best-known example being “The Kill” by Thirty Seconds to Mars). But “In My Blood” offers some of the more faithful and clever recreations of Shining set-pieces we've seen lately, and it's pretty clear Yseult's genre and cult movie sensibilities extend far beyond her tenure in White Zombie (the band's earlier video for “Your Mama Was a Grifter” is a spin on the grindhouse classic Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!). The trio, which also includes vocalist Von Hessling and guitarist Dava She Wolf,...

Jared Leto is generating some Oscar buzz for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club, his first movie role in almost six years. But he was hardly sitting on his duff during that period. As the lead singer of Thirty Seconds to Mars, Leto was touring and recording with his band, which includes his brother, Shannon, and Tomo Milicevic. The band sold millions of records, but there were some bumps along the way. Unhappy with their relationship with music behemoth Emi, Thirty Seconds attempted to opt out of its contract in 2008. The label responded by suing the band for $30 million.

By now, you know that Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto sacrificed their bodies and dropped more than 30 pounds each to play their HIV-positive characters in Dallas Buyers Club. It’s understandable that those details have been obsessed over by the media in stories and reviews, but there’s more than a spartan diet behind both men’s convincing transformations into the homophobic redneck (McConaughey) who becomes a drug-dealing savior to the demoralized gay community in the mid-1980s and the delicate transsexual (Leto) who becomes his unlikely business partner.

The craft of acting is based on the performer’s ability to transform. An actor renounces to his own personality to inhabit the character’s skin. After watching Dallas Buyers Club (Isa: Voltage Pictures, U.S. Focus Features) , it is hard to think of any performances this year that exemplify that basic principle of the dramatic craft better than those in Jean-Marc Vallée’s latest work. Losing weight was just the beginning of the road for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. The physical fragility both their bodies exude allows them to fully become their broken characters from the inside out.
McConaughey plays real life hustler turned savior, Ron Woodroof, a Texan electrician that carries himself with overconfident machismo. He is fond of liquor, drugs and the company of women and fancies himself an undefeatable tough guy until he falls ill for no apparent reason. But once at the hospital the tests results are brutal. Diagnosed with HIV, he is given no more than 30 days to live, a prognosis that doesn’t sit well with the rebellious cowboy. This is 1985, and under the assumption that only homosexuals contracted the virus, all of his friends outcast him leaving him to die alone. However, he is not ready to die, and although unable to partake in the clinical trials for the promising drug Azt, he acquires it illegally. Still, the benefits are minimal and his health continues to deteriorate, so in an effort to prologue his existence and with nothing to lose, Ron decides to grab life by the horns. The perennial anti-hero embarks on a trip to Mexico to bring antiviral medication unapproved by the Fda in the U.S.
Along the way he befriends transsexual HIV-patient Rayon (Jared Leto), a charismatic character who will become Ron’s partner in crime on a mission to save their lives. Together they develop a network of clients, men and women infected with the virus and desperate to survive during a time where the disease was spreading faster than helpful medication was being released. Ron is no longer smuggling drugs only to keep himself alive, but to save, via his buyers club, the lives of those afflicted by the same evil. Openly homophobic at first, Ron experiences a profound change of heart through his friendship with Rayon. He learns to respect his condition and even defends him from his attackers. They form a bond grounded on their mutual failures and determination to not only survive, but to live.
Leto (Requiem for a Dream, Mr. Nobody), who in recent years has been mostly known for being the lead singer of the rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars, is completely unrecognizable as the drug-addicted yet charming Rayon. Cheeky and inappropriate his character steals every scene. His characterization is not only successful because of the noticeable extreme weight loss, but because he loses himself and embraces every trait of the character. His mannerisms, his gentle but sassy voice, and all other subtle nuances create a man in search of artificial femininity who really just wants to be loved. No other supporting role this year can match the devotion Mr. Leto puts into creating this character, one can only hope his work is remunerated with the respective accolades.
Working from a screenplay by Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack based on Ron Woodroof’s amazing life, which came to an end in 1992, Vallée tactfully avoided clichéd sentimentalism. Confident in McConaughey’s lead performance and the power of the characters, he lets the film tell the story with affecting vulnerability but never pushing for unnecessary emotion. McConaughey plays a man who despite his atrocious circumstances can still laugh at the world around him. He fights a system with the knowledge that everyday he lives is a small miracle, and thanks to that he has the upper hand. His physician Dr. Eve Saks, played on point by Jennifer Garner, is at once perplexed by his crooked ways and full of admiration for his labor of love.
Say what you will about a man who breaks the law, a man who tricks the system in a priest outfit, and that even aware of his scrawny figure dares to ride a bull, but one has to give it to him for looking at himself and others in his situation not like lost causes victims of their own sins, but as flawed people who deserve, at the very least the chance to live one more day. Dallas Buyers Club is simultaneously a showcase of masterful acting, and a lesson in humanity.

In the department of pet names that don't require deep metaphorical interpretation, there is Judas, a wolf – yes, a wolf! – that Jared Leto used to own. "He never hung with the dogs," recalls the rock star (his band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, just played a triumphant show at the Hollywood Bowl) and actor (he stars in the acclaimed new Dallas Buyers Club). "He always had one eye on the hills. Such a special animal, and a killer. One time, I had rolled down the window in the car. He jumped out,...

The 36th Mill Valley Film Festival had over 125 screenings, over 75 directors in attendance, and over 1600 California Film Institute members have attended films. It’s been a busy 8 days and I’m not counting on any sleep until Monday.
The past few nights have included some serious high profile talent: Jared Leto came with Dallas Buyers Club's Us premiere. For his first acting role in five years, he showed no rust. The audience must have been undoubtedly different than a Thirty Seconds to Mars concert with an arena filled with screaming teens. Few ticket holders knew him from his his raw performance in Requiem for a Dream and even fewer remembered him as dreamy Jordan Catalano from My So-Called Life (I almost got out my Angela Chase costume from last year's Halloween but thought it might clash with my staff badge). Unfortunately I wasn't able to see the film but neither was Leto who revealed to the audience in the Q&A that he had still not seen Dallas Buyers Club and wasn't planning to anytime soon.
Following the screening of his film 12 Years A Slave (which just won the Audience Award at the Toronto Film Festival), director Steve McQueen sat down this morning with colleagues J.C. Chandor (All is Lost), Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station), Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace), and John Wells (August: Osage County) for " Variety Focus on Director's Panel ," or, my favorite hour and a half of the festival. The five directors spoke with moderator Peter Caranicas from Variety about their recent projects and the process of working with distributors and actors. The five had great energy and honesty. Coogler told us how he wore a tie and backpack to his initial meeting with the film's producer Forrest Whitaker and Scott Cooper gave a gracious shout out to legendary independent filmmaker Rob Nilsson who was in the audience. For me, I enjoyed the panels comments on scoring a film whether it was the challenges of working with composers or the power of an absence of music in film to let the sound design do the magic.
With a great morning behind me, I'm excited to take on the last two days of the festival. Maybe I'll even be able to fit in a movie!

You’ve seen the shocking photos of Matthew McConaughey, who dropped more than 40 pounds to play Ron Woodroof, the real-life AIDS patient in Dallas Buyers Club. But McConaughey isn’t the only star of the film who underwent a complete physical transformation. Jared Leto plays Rayon, the HIV-positive transsexual who becomes Ron’s business partner in their 1980s drug-smuggling operation to get unapproved AIDS medicines into the U.S. Leto not only dropped more than 30 pounds to play the dying drug addict — a feat he’d famously done before for Requiem for a Dream — but he stayed in-character as Rayon...

This fall, "Thirty Seconds to Mars" front-man Jared Leto is making a bid to remind you what a fine actor he is. Earlier this month, Toronto International Film Festival audiences got a preview of his acclaimed supporting turn opposite Matthew McConaughey as a HIV-positive transvestite in "Dallas Buyers Club." That film hits theaters November 1st, the same day another Leto project opens, one that features the actor in lead mode. In "Mr. Nobody," which world premiered in Venice where it won both the Biografilm and Golden Osella awards, Leto headlines a starry cast that includes Sarah Polley and Diane Kruger, as the last living mortal in the year 2092, who recalls his life story to a reporter. Last month Indiewire premiered the poster for the sci-fi drama, and today we're happy to share an exclusive scene from the film, which is available to view on VOD starting today. Go Here for details.

Jared Leto is a pretty face with a pretty amazing voice. On Tuesday, the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman appeared on BBC's Radio 1 Live Lounge for Fearne Cotton where he covered Rihanna's "Stay."Check out the video above to see Leto's rocker version of the emotional track -- we might just like his cover of the song more than the original!Jared isn't the first star to take a stab at RiRi's single though. In February, Vin Diesel belted out "Stay" during a very special karaoke performance, which he dedicated to his Facebook fans. Click Here to see Vin show off his singing chops, it's pretty adorable. What do you think of Jared's cover? At the tail end of last year, Gregory Burkart presented you with his top 10 favorite horror inspired music videos of the year, a gory collection of horrific imagery mashed together with delightful sounds; a combination that I personally can't get enough of. Be sure to go back and check out his picks, if you missed that post or just want to re-watch some kickass videos.
Today, I've queued up ten more awesome horror-themed music videos that I think you're going to like. So instead of sitting here and talking to you any further, I invite you to turn up the volume and dig in!
Franz Ferdinand: "Evil Eye"
This here is actually the video that inspired this whole list. Released just a few days ago, Franz Ferdinand's new video "Evil Eye" is an absolute must-watch, a blood-soaked ode to those cheesy '80s shot-on-video horror flicks that we all love so much.

Matthew McConaughey has been gaining Oscar goodwill ever since last year’s stripped-down performance in Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike, followed by the paparazzi photos showing People magazine’s Sexist Man Alive 2005 dropping nearly 50 pounds to play an AIDS patient in Dallas Buyers Club, which finally debuted over the weekend at the Toronto Film Festival. But should McConaughey earn his first nomination for his performance as Ron Woodroof, the hard-living Texas homophobe who defied his death-sentence diagnosis and federal health regulations in the 1980s to become a gay-community beacon by smuggling and selling foreign drug treatments that extended thousands of lives,...

Look for Jared Leto to be walking many red carpets during the upcoming awards season. The Thirty Seconds to Mars rocker is earning Oscar-buzzing reviews for his portrayal of a transsexual in the Dallas Buyers Club, a real-life drama about Ron Woodruff (Matthew McConaughey), a straight Texan with AIDS in the 1980s who smuggled alternative drug treatments into the U.S. from Mexico. Leto came face-to face with HIV and AIDS when he moved to Los Angeles in 1991. "I rented a room in a three-bedroom apartment and one of the rooms was rented by a man who was dying [of AIDS]," Leto told me at the Toronto Film Festival premiere of the film. " I was there during his final days. "I didn't...

Currently stirring up awards buzz at this year's Toronto Film Festival, "Dallas Buyers Club" required more of its stars than just stellar performances. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto both had to drop significant amounts of weight to portray individuals who develop AIDS in the true-life story of their characters' struggle to make treatments more readily available.
For his part, Leto got down to 114 pounds for the role of Rayon, an HIV-positive transgender woman who helps McConaughey's Ron Woodroof smuggle in and sell alternative (read: non-fda-approved) drugs from Mexico.
"I stopped eating," Leto told TheWrap at the after-party for the film in Toronto, revealing that he lost around 40 pounds. "After a while I stopped counting."
"It changes the way you walk, the way you sit, the way you think," he said.
It wasn't the first time Leto, who's now better known as the frontman for Thirty Seconds to Mars, had transformed...

Thirty Seconds To Mars won a Vma on Sunday, but viewers who simply tuned into MTV for the telecast likely had no idea.
The band's award for Best Rock Video, which honored the song "Up In The Air," was presented on the pre-show before the festivities officially kicked off. During a visit to the HuffPost Live studio the day after the VMAs, lead singer Jared Leto told host Ricky Camilleri that fans should express dissatisfaction with rock being sidelined on the music network.
"Rock music deserves a place there," Leto said. "I don't think people will be bored by it. But we live in a world right now that seems to want to be anesthetized, that seems to want to just feel one thing. It's this slight sedation."
HuffPost Entertainment editor Kia Makarechi pointed out that the tide might be turning with the popularity of pop acts like Passion Pit and fun.

On Monday's visit to HuffPost Live, Thirty Seconds to Mars' Jared Leto took a moment to respond to HuffPost Entertainment Editor Kia Makarechi's previous article about the band. In his article, which focused on an interview Leto and Makarechi conducted in May, Makarechi noted that there was a distinction between the art world that Leto appears to live in and the music that his band makes. (Makarechi wrote that Leto is "a rock star to young-ish crowds of everymen and a high-brow, mysterious art movie star").
Leto says the band's fans (a fiercely loyal and diverse group known as "The Echelon") felt like Makarechi was being an elitist and "snarky." Here's what happened when the two met on set in New York. (The full segment can be viewed here.)...

New York — Miley Cyrus' foam finger, Lady Gaga's thong, Taylor Swift's mean streak and the look on Rihanna's face while Drake performed will surely be remembered, but these MTV Video Music Awards belonged to Justin Timberlake.
Timberlake briefly reunited with `N Sync, won moonman trophies including top honor video of the year for "Mirrors" plus the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and managed to overshadow most of today's top pop stars while doing it.
"I don't deserve the award, but I'm not going to give it back," Timberlake said. "I'm taking this home."
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were the night's other top winners, taking home trophies for best hip-hop video and best cinematography for "Can't Hold Us," and best video with a social message for "Same Love." They performed that song with Mary Lambert and Jennifer Hudson in a show-stopping moment.
"Gay rights are human rights," Macklemore said during the telecast.

One Direction may be the biggest boy band in the world right now, but there's one person who is evidently unimpressed.
Taylor Swift, the golden girl of pop who went out with Harry Styles earlier this year, was caught on camera last night at the Vma Awards, when One Direction took to the stage to present an award.
Swift, with Selena Gomez at her side in the audience, was clearly caught on camera mouthing "Shut the f*** up" when One Direction took turns to speak.
Harry, whose relationship with Swift made her the target of some Twitter abuse from One Direction fans, has recently said he fully expects to be the subject of one of Swift's songs, which are famously about her relationships, particularly when they fail.
One Direction enjoyed a more favourable reception last night from Lady Gaga, here posing with the boys

Like every year, the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards had its shares of highs and lows, but this year, the highlights were so bright they blow the roof off the place. From raucous performances to "surprise" guests, and a few big winners, the show rocked the house from start to finish.
