The sad news arrived on Wednesday that Daniel Johnston, an outsider folk musician who created incredible art throughout his life despite a debilitating mental illness, died of natural causes at his home in Houston, Texas.
“Daniel was a singer, songwriter, an artist, and a friend to all,” he family said in a statement. “Although he struggled with mental health issues for much of his adult life, Daniel triumphed over his illness through his prolific output of art and songs. Varèse Sarabande will release the Z For Zachariah – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally August 28 and on CD on September 4, 2015.
The album features the original music composed by Heather McIntosh (Compliance, Manson Family Vacation).
“This is my second time working with Craig Zobel, so our director-composer language is pretty well developed,” explained McIntosh. “With our last collaboration [Compliance], the ensemble was super minimal, super biting, but minimal. This time we wanted to push ourselves with the score and it’s thematic development. Really go for it, you know? Though it is a chamber work, we wanted the sound to be full and orchestral.”
McIntosh had the opportunity to write for organ in a scene where Margot Robbie’s character plays the instrument on screen. “We knew that we needed to get the tone of this right. It needed to feel like a timeless hymn and also be a defining theme for Ann.

Was it just us, or was this a really sad year for Super Bowl commercials? Children died, "Cat's in the Cradle" was played, and it was a real bummer of a night, generally. How sad was it? "Stay with Me" on repeat and red wine sad. Liking your ex's old vacation pictures alone on a Friday night sad. Requiem for a Dream scored to Bright Eyes sad. And because we're nothing if not sad-pletists (that's sadness completists), here's all of the saddest Super Bowl commercials in one place. Ready your hankies. The American Film Institute is probably best known for those lists of the 100 Greatest Movies of All Time (y'know... if it's an American production in some way). Well, every year they hold their own awards, because every group of people has to have awards. They recognize the ten best films (for this year, it's eleven due to a tie) and the ten best television programs of the year. There are not winners in these categories, but each one gets celebrated. On that front, I kind of like the AFI approach to awards. Along with the awards, AFI has put together this four and a half minute montage chronicling the last 120 years of film. Now, it would be ridiculous to cover every single year. Instead, they start with 1894's Strong Man and jump every ten years, showcasing films like Rear Window, The Godfather: Part II, Pulp Fiction, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...

Every year for the past few years, a new "Hunger Games" movie has been unleashed on the world and those releases have come complete with a slew of tie-in merchandise, cunningly synergistic and essential in the studio's desire to build hype and awareness around the young-adult novel adaptations (which star Jennifer Lawrence and are based on books by Suzanne Collins, of course).
But the soundtracks to the films have become mini-events in and of themselves, able to build the kind of fervor the movies usually do (with just as much anticipation and speculation). We attended the junket for next week's "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1"over the weekend, and were handed a copy of the brand-new album (out now physically and digitally) and figured we should rundown the album properly. So here we go!

We've already heard a few songs from Lorde's very Lorde Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 soundtrack. Now we have her cover of Bright Eyes' "Ladder Song." The song is great, and a great fit for the movie, with its conflicting feelings of loss and hope. Lorde does a good job Lorde-ifying it, swapping the sad keyboard for a sad church organ. It would be perfect for a scene in which Katniss prays to some deity that somehow seems both super ancient and super modern — like a dragon with an iPad.The original:...

The world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings hasn’t left the same mark on the video game medium that it has in film, though many attempts have been made. The Battle for Middle-earth strategy games? Good, but the series lasted for only a few years. The Rings Lego games? Also fun, but the Middle-earth setting is just one of several major properties to be Legoized. Even the games connected to the original trilogy films have their upsides but were never critical darlings.

In "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," Caesar (Andy Serkis) led his fellow imprisoned apes to freedom. "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," set 10 years later, finds Caesar the leader of an evolving community of apes while the human population is in ruins thanks to the devastating "Simian Flu." A chance encounter between humans and apes threatens to destroy the peace for both species in this sequel, which opens Friday.
Moviefone traveled to San Francisco to chat with Serkis about why acting in a unitard is no different from any other costume, his role model for Caesar, and which of his films scarred his children for life.

Andy Serkis: I don't think I am, actually. I'm just an actor who's around at a time when performance capture is evolving.

A planet where apes evolved from men? Well, not exactly, if you follow the film versions of the Planet of the Apes series. Based somewhat on the fourth film in the series Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972), Rise of the Planet of the Apes tells the story of how tinkering with genetic make-up of a species might just lead to humanity’s demise. Rise of the Planet of the Apes re-rebooted the more-than 40-year-old franchise and sets the stage for the much buzzed about Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (we liked it a lot). It also gave an opportunity to show the nuance and artistry involved in performance capture, courtesy of Weta Digital and Andy Serkis For its initial Blu-ray and DVD release, director Rupert Wyatt sat down with his film and talked about the production in his stand-alone commentary. Review Billy Grifter 17 Feb 2014 - 09:39
Billy is still struggling to take Helix seriously. Here's his review of this week's episode...
This review contains spoilers.
1.7 Survivor Zero
A cynic might say that you can always tell when a show has lost its way… Jeri Ryan shows up.
I’ve been watching Helix with increasing incredulity. It's as if the writers sat around at the script meetings and agreed that characters with almost no backstory or real personalities would become endearing when placed in very obviously contrived peril.
The most contrived aspect of the whole show is the lack of communications with the outside world, that’s now reached new levels of farce with the arrival of Jeri Ryan’s character, Constance Sutton. She tells them that she’s not brought her own communications with her, and that her helicopters will be back in a few days. Right, so presumably back at Cdc,...

Failed The Voice UK contestant Bob Blakeley has been reduced to tears after being offered a six-month deal with music industry expert Mike Batt on live TV.
Viewers were left outraged after the coaches failed to turn for Blakeley's barnstorming performance of 'Cry Me a River' on Saturday's (January 18) episode.
Appearing on BBC Breakfast this morning (January 23), the 55-year-old was stunned to receive a surprise message from Batt - who wrote 'Bright Eyes' and discovered Katie Melua - offering his services as a mentor to try to land him a record deal, potentially with his own label, Dramatico.
"Usually when the chairs don't turn around you think, fair enough, but he was just so phenomenal," Batt said. "I just felt such a sense of injustice that I thought I ought to do something.
"I would like to be the fifth person that did turn round... I would love to mentor you,...

When Richard Linklater’s new film, Boyhood, was announced as a last minute addition to this year’s Sundance programming, I found myself in the midst of an internal conflict. I was fairly certain that this was going to be the hot ticket film of the festival, but I was also intimidated by the film’s 160 minute length. I feared the possibility that 90 minutes in, I would be struck with the realization that this was indeed the worst film I had ever seen, and would have to do a terrifying “walk of shame” exit from the theater under the disapproving gazes of Linklater and Ethan Hawke. It took me about two minutes of this film to realize how silly I was for ever having these fears in the first place.
From a filmmaking standpoint, Boyhood is likely one of the most ambitious undertakings ever to hit the big screen. Sometimes during a post-screening Q&A,...

Conor Oberst was up for the titular role of Inside Llewyn Davis – "and thank God for everyone that I didn't get it," he joked during a chat with the film's actual star, Oscar Isaac. In a chat for Interview, Isaac and the Bright Eyes frontman spoke about Joel and Ethan Coen's latest film, an homage to the early days of the Greenwich Village folk revival, in which Isaac plays a floundering musician. It was a role the brothers initially struggled to fill, wanting to find an actor who could also play music.

Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst auditioned for the title role in Inside Llewyn Davis.
The musician revealed that he tried out for the lead in the Coen Brothers' musical while speaking with the film's star Oscar Isaac for Interview.
"I know I told you this when we met, but I tried out for your role in Inside Llewyn Davis," he said. "And thank god for everyone that I didn't get it."
Oberst added that he was one of many musicians and actors that performed for the Coens and musical director T-Bone Burnett.
"They had more or less given up on the idea of finding someone," he added.
Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garrett Hedlund and Adam Driver also featured in the tale of the down-on-his-luck musician living in 1960s New York.
The Coen Brothers have said that they are planning another musical film.

Conor Oberst reveals that he 'tried out' for the starring role in the Golden Globe-nominated Inside Llewyn Davis
Conor Oberst has revealed that he auditioned for the lead role in Inside Llewyn Davis. Although the Coen Brothers eventually cast actor Oscar Isaac as the film's titular folk singer, Oberst was apparently one of several professional musicians the directors considered for the part.

Director Gabriel Sunday is promising psychedelic good times with his latest short film about troubled indie-music icon Daniel Johnston. The work plays like a documentary, but things transform when Johnston’s art, music and other quirks are used to create his internal world — and if you’ve listened to his music, then you know that’s an emotionally complex experience. The footage was captured during the Open Borders Festival in California, inside an abandoned bookstore, shot in just a few days. The soundtrack boasts songs from Tom Waits, Beck, Bright Eyes, Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, Johnny Depp and Gibby Haynes, Pearl Jam, the Flaming Lips and more. The filmmakers are currently campaigning on Kickstarter to gather funds for the postproduction...

When in The Smiths’ "Rubber Ring" Morrissey implored, "Don't forget the songs / That saved your life", he was speaking earnestly to the power of music to help us through our moments of deepest and darkest despairing. Journalist Rob Sheffield’s new book Turn Around Bright Eyes: The Rituals of Love and Karaoke, is about just that; indeed, it is a poignant but also charming and exceedingly funny account of how karaoke helped him move on from the terrible grief that followed the tragic death of his wife Renee Crist in 1997. It’s the veritable sequel to his 2007 tome Love

You’ve had almost a week now; have you recovered from the True Blood Season 6 finale? It certainly was a mixed bag, wasn’t it? From the drop dead gorgeous snowy Swedish mountaintops, to six months later and Bellefleur’s, “Bright Eyes” Alcide without the ridiculous hairpiece, and the approaching horde, there certainly was something for nearly every True Blood fan.
Here to discuss it further are writer Kate Barnow and director Scott Winant, and some great clips:

Personally, I’m presuming that Pam will have rescued Eric mid-burn and whisked him off somewhere. Because I cannot imagine a True Blood without Eric Northman. What are your predictions for Season 7? Unfortunately, we have quite some time to work on them…...

I don’t know if I’m ready to talk about what just happened on the season finale of True Blood. I do know that I don’t necessarily believe that what happened is what it appears to be. Sookie herself said, “It’s not what you think.” Anyway, take this moment to marvel at Joe Manganiello’s terrible wig (which thankfully gave way to a foxy haircut later on), and try out his new nickname — Bright Eyes! — before we delve into the more serious ish of the episode.
Hmmm, what is he reading? Nope. Still not ready to talk about it.

Turn around, Bright Eyes, and sit down — because you’ll never be able to top Christina Bianco’s recent rendition of “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”
First of all, you’re probably not a Drama Desk Award-nominated musical theater performer. Secondly, chances are you haven’t spent years honing spot-on impersonations of everyone from Adele to Edith Piaf to Shakira. And thirdly, even if you have, you may still find it tricky to switch from one diva to another at a moment’s notice. Bianco, though, has the transitions down to a science.
