Sex, ‘80s, and Robby Müller: How Two Brits Recreated the American Crime Film in ‘Love Lies Bleeding’
Unlike most of the next generation of great director-cinematographer pairings, Ben Fordesman and Rose Glass didn’t have a collaborative history prior to their first feature “Saint Maud.” They didn’t go to school together or make short films — it was Fordesman’s agent who made the connection for “Saint Maud.”
And in interviewing both Glass and Fordesman for this story, it’s clear on the first project they were feeling each other out, figuring out how the other worked, and then at some point it just clicked.
Glass described the development of a visual style on “Saint Maud” that became the basis of their work on their second feature, “Love Lies Bleeding.” “I think that naturally we had a bit of a shorthand, I guess trying to constantly balance this being of [and] in the real world, but also kind of not,” said Glass, while she was a guest on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast.

Writer and director Ari Aster has begun production on his newest film, “Eddington,” and he has assembled quite a cast.
Now boasting two Oscars, Emma Stone will appear in the film, as will Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, marking his second collaboration with Aster after last year’s love-it-or-hate-it-but-definitely-respect-it “Beau is Afraid.” Oscar-nominee and current Harkonnen meme king Austin Butler, Marvel’s future Reed Richards Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Tony winner Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr. round out the incredibly stacked cast.
A24, which has released all of Aster’s features (“Hereditary” and “Midsommar” before “Beau”) announced the “contemporary western” that is “coming soon” via Instagram. Aster has parted ways with his usual cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski and is working with the legendary Persian-French lenser Darius Khondji, whose credits include “Uncut Gems,” “The Lost City of Z,” “Midnight in Paris,” “Stealing Beauty,” “Seven,” and “ The City of Lost Children.

Ari Aster’s fourth feature as a director is officially a go at A24. Aster is set to direct “Eddington” with A24 both financing and producing.
The film will reunite Aster with his “Beau Is Afraid” star Joaquin Phoenix alongside a cast that also includes Pedro Pascal, newly minted Oscar winner Emma Stone, “Yellowstone” star Luke Grimes, as well as Austin Butler, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr.
Production kicks off on “Eddington” this week.
The official logline says only that “Eddington” follows a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations. There have been rumors that the film is a Western set during the pandemic in which a couple runs out of gas in the small town of Eddington and are greeted warmly, only for the town to turn nightmarish by nightfall.

At five of the last 10 Oscars, Best Cinematography has gone hand-in-hand with Best Director: Emmanuel Lubezki and Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity” (2014); Lubezki and Alejandro G. Inarritu for both “Birdman” (2015) and “The Revenant” (2016); Linus Sandgren and Damien Chazelle for “La La Land” (2017); and Cuaron doing double duty on “Roma” (2019). Will that trend hold true this year? (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Cinematography.)

Ari Aster, the director of films such as Hereditary, Midsommar, and most recently Beau is Afraid, has opened up about a feature film project that he eventually wants to make titled Eddington, which he describes as a “western-noir dark comedy ensemble piece set in a fictional copper mining town in contemporary New Mexico during the Covid-19 pandemic.”1
The film, which is rumored to star Joaquin Phoenix as the lead, has been in the works for a long time. Aster revealed that he had written the script for Eddington before he made his debut feature, Hereditary, and that he had always wanted to make it.2
However, due to the pandemic and the potential SAG strike, the production of Eddington has been delayed. Aster had originally planned to start shooting the film in late summer of 2023, but it seems that he has pushed it back to fall.3

Eddington: Ari Aster’s next film will be a contemporary western that takes place during the pandemic
Ari Aster is carving out a nice little niche spot for himself in the film community. He came in hot with great confidence with his debut film Hereditary, then aimed to make a haunting horror movie in an unconventionally sunny, warm setting with Midsommar. Recently, Aster was thankful that the studio A24 was “stupid enough” to let him make an abstract dark comedy like Beau is Afraid without much interference. The unique voice of Aster has given him carte blanche, so now he is able to go back to a past idea that he initially thought would be his debut film.
According to World of Reel, Aster gave an interview in the Italian publication La Reppublica, where he revealed details about the next project he hopes to work on. The project of Eddington was something he had been developing for a while. Eddington is a contemporary western that is set...

The 2023 Canadian film Beau is Afraid, directed and written by Ari Aster and starring Joaquin Phoenix, is a trip to an incomprehensible nightmare that you won’t be able to escape.
Ari Aster has done it before with “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” and now he has created another film that can only be made by him. This is a journey into madness from the very beginning, and it’s a film that you’ll either love or hate.
Beau is Afraid (2023)
Joaquin Phoenix, one of those actors who loves to carry the weight of the film and whose abilities allow him to do so, stars in “Beau is Afraid. While we eagerly await “Joker 2” and its highly anticipated co-star (none other than Lady Gaga), Phoenix offers another one of those performances that only he could do justice to. Ari Aster is an excellent director, and with Phoenix’s signature already on the dotted line,...

The cast of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Blue Beetle has increased by one, with pop star Becky G signing on to provide the voice of Khaji-Da. The studio’s official casting announcement included the following description of Khaji-Da:
“In the film, Khaji-Da is a beautiful relic of ancient alien biotechnology. The palm-sized obsidian-like Scarab is one of the most powerful artifacts in the universe, pulsing with iridescent streaks of bluish and purple. Jaime comes across it quite by accident, but once it has chosen him as a host, the Scarab bestows Jaime with a suit that is both organic and technological, and a symbiotic connection transforms the college grad into the almighty Super Hero Blue Beetle.”

Anyone who has watched the Criterion Channel knows that writer-director Ari Aster is a devoted cinephile with broad taste and a deep understanding of how and why movies work. For his latest and most ambitious film, “Beau Is Afraid,” Aster told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast that he tried to leave specific tributes to other movies behind, at least consciously. “I would say that a lot of the influences were unconscious while I was writing it,” he said. “I became aware of them while we were shooting, or even in post.” Aster and his regular cinematographer, Pawel Pogorzelski, talked more about literary references than cinematic ones, but there’s no denying that several of the classics that Aster has “metabolized,” as he put it, found their way into the visual and aural DNA of “Beau Is Afraid.” Here are three key films that influeced Aster and Pogorzelski’s approach.

Hot on the heels of their love-it-or-hate-it niche hit "Beau Is Afraid", Ari Aster and Joaquin Phoenix are evidently ready to run it back.
According to cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski, who has shot all three of Aster's films, the filmmaker's next movie will be "Eddington." Aster has been dropping hints about this project for the last four years, but he's been especially chatty about it during the press tour for "Beau Is Afraid." Per World of Reel, the confirmation came from Pogorzelski as he was speaking at a seminar in Nashville.
What is "Eddington?" If you've been following Aster's career since his 2018 breakout "Hereditary," you know all about it. If not, allow me to fill you in.

There is a succinct, incredible moment of catharsis at the conclusion of Ari Aster’s feature debut Hereditary when one of its beleaguered, terrified protagonists makes the break-neck decision to defenestrate themselves rather than endure the horrors to come. Three features into his career, Aster has not only made a name for himself as an inventive horror auteur but as a peddler of relentless suffering. Both Hereditary and his 2019 sophomore effort Midsommar push their characters, their runtime, and their audience to the brink of agony. This unending pain often culminates in brief artfulness, but in his third film, Beau Is Afraid, Aster has finally crafted something so annoying it had me searching for a window through which I might release myself.

Playing Beau Wassermann, the character who gives Ari Aster’s third feature its name, Joaquin Phoenix goes balls to the wall in a performance of astonishing intensity that holds nothing back. Beau lives next door to a peep show emporium called Ejectus Erectus, and at one point is informed by a medic that his abnormally distended testicles are cause for concern, which is just one of many indications that this guy badly needs to — how to put it delicately? — oh heck, shoot a load.
Three hours that definitely put the odd in odyssey, Beau Is Afraid could be said to suffer from the same bloat, wandering through bizarre detours of varying effectiveness before arriving at a wonderfully overripe operatic climax elevated by Patti LuPone as the Lydia Tár of single mothers. But even if its pacing is uneven, this is a movie of undeniably impressive big swings.

"Hereditary" opens on a shot of a treehouse seen through a window before an ominously slow pan around the room reveals a dollhouse sitting on a table. The camera dollies in to focus on a bedroom, which as it comes closer is shown to be an actual room, tracked onto the dollhouse with VFX. This opening sequence is at once unsettling and intriguing. What does the dollhouse have to do with anything? Well, according to director Ari Aster, it's an important metaphor for the film as a whole.

One of 2023’s most mysterious movies just got much less mysterious, as A24 has debuted the brand-new trailer for “Midsommar” and “Hereditary” director Ari Aster’s latest film, “Beau Is Afraid.”
Up until now all we had were snippets of information – Aster himself described it as a four-hour-long “nightmare comedy” back in 2020, and it was described as being a decades-spanning epic set in an alternate version of modern-day America. Oscar-winning star Joaquin Phoenix was said to go on a decades-spanning odyssey battling demons both psychological and literal. And now that the official trailer for the movie has dropped, well, yeah, that all checks out.
The 2.5-minute spot certainly teases that “nightmare comedy” tone, with the bits shown of co-stars Amy Ryan and Nathan Lane being just left-of-center enough that sweetness reads as sinister. We also see Phoenix’s Beau age and de-age, enter different dimensions and even walk alongside an angel?...

Be afraid, be very afraid of Joaquin Phoenix’s next role.
The Oscar winner plays the titular Beau in Ari Aster’s latest A24 film, “Beau Is Afraid.” While the plot has long been under wraps, a most recent synopsis has been shared, which details, “A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film from writer/director Ari Aster.”
Along with Phoenix, Nathan Lane, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Patti LuPone, Amy Ryan, and Parker Posey also star.
Originally titled “Disappointment Blvd.,” the long-in-the-works feature is slated for an April 21, 2023 release date in theaters. “Midsommar” director Aster previously said his next film will be a four-hour-long “nightmare comedy” when “Disappointment” was officially announced in February 2021. When it was teased that Ari Aster's highly anticipated third feature was going to be a "nightmare comedy," a ton of questions obviously surfaced. Will this new film mark a shift away from the eerie horror of "Hereditary" and "Midsommar?" Will the movie actually be four hours long as he claimed? What even is a nightmare comedy? Well, it looks like those questions will be answered soon, although several more will likely be asked in the process. That's because A24 has officially unveiled the first look of Aster's third film, "Beau is Afraid" (previously "Disappointment Blvd.").
Obviously, not a ton of footage was shown, but we do know that Joaquin Phoenix is playing a world-renowned entrepreneur plagued by mysterious and tormenting forces. There has been a lot of unintentional comedy scattered throughout his previous two films, but it'll be interesting to see how it plays out in this supposed nightmare comedy.

Ari Aster is giving a first look at his latest A24 film, “Beau Is Afraid,” starring Joaquin Phoenix.
Originally titled “Disappointment Blvd.,” the long-in-the-works feature is slated for a 2023 release date in theaters. The poster shows what seems to be the child version of Phoenix’s character, dressed in silk pajamas. IndieWire has confirmed “Beau Is Afraid” as the new title for “Disappointment Blvd.”
“Midsommar” director Aster previously said his next film will be a four-hour-long “nightmare comedy” when “Disappointment” was officially announced in February 2021. While the plot remains under wraps, the film was described as an “intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.”
Aster helmed a 2011 short film also titled “Beau,” although it is unclear if “Beau Is Afraid” is related to the short. In that short film, a neurotic middle-aged man’s trip to visit his mother is held up when his...

The Moon in the Gutter: Amirpour Shoots for the Moon and Misses
For her third directorial outing, Ana Lily Amirpour remains fascinated with B-movie grunge aesthetics, concocting a throwback to 1990s novelty in Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon. Unfortunately, her narrative never lives up to either of the enigmatic objects in her title and feels like an exercise in her favorite elements, though none of them coalesce.
New Orleans tends to stand out as the most vibrant character, where a focus on the down-and-out neon-lit locals lensed by Pawel Pogorzelski (Hereditary; Midsommar) promises garish delights. But for all the carefully curated soundtrack selections attempting to hotwire a sluggish narrative, nothing gets past a sort of loopy superficiality, never fun enough to ascribe to camp yet too smugly self-aware to ever take seriously.…...

Some of us are a bit rusty when it comes to the ol’ dating and don’t have the best relationship status, but not since David Fincher’s Gone Girl has a film made me this happy to be single. In her directorial debut, filmmaker Mimi Cave absolutely admirably goes for it in her dark comedy thriller Fresh, which is available on Hulu over in America and here in the UK via Disney+. Yes Disney has a film like Fresh in their archives, and that is a fact I think is well worth applauding and appreciating.
Fresh follows Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) a young woman who is starting to think she is not cut out for this dating lark, after a few dreadful dates all set up online. Then, as if by magic (or fate), she bumps into the enormously charming Steve (Sebastian Stan), and their chemistry together begins to instantly sparkle.

Stars: Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sebastian Stan, Jojo T. Gibbs | Written by Lauryn Kahn | Directed by Mimi Cave
Rising star Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) and Sebastian Stan star in this stylish horror-thriller that sinks its teeth into dating culture, toxic male behaviour and a few other tasty morsels on the side. Now streaming on Disney Plus / Star, it marks the directorial debut of Mimi Cave, who clearly has talent to burn.
Edgar-Jones plays Noa, a single twenty-something who’s fed up of meeting red flag-waving weirdos on dating apps. When she meets handsome stranger Steve (Stan) in the supermarket – i.e. the old fashioned way – she can’t resist his charms and soon she’s allowing herself to be whisked away for a romantic weekend at his not-at-all-suspicious remote house in the woods.
Sure enough, Steve turns out to be harbouring a very dark secret, which you can probably guess from the film’s marketing campaign,...

This review of “Fresh” was originally posted Jan. 21, 2022 from the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
It takes a long, long time before the so-called “opening credits” roll in Mimi Cave’s decadently horrifying directorial debut “Fresh.” That’s probably because, as wonderful as the film’s first act is, we ain’t seen nothing yet.
“Fresh” begins with the latest in what seems to be a long, long line of crappy online dates for Noa. She hates the modern courtship process — and with good cause — but, dang it, it’s the 21st century, and her options seem limited to swiping right and hoping for the best or a lifetime of lousy loneliness.
So it’s something of a shock when she actually meets a real live person, in a real-life grocery store, who shows an interest her and doesn’t seem like a total sack of crap. Steve has great taste in produce.

In the modern world dating and relationships, and online dating apps, can seem at best a gamble and at worst a round of Russian roulette. Fresh is a film that leans more towards the latter. The film centers around its main heroine Noa, Daisy-Edgar Jones, a young woman whose disgust for dating is changed by a chance encounter in a grocery store with her would-be prince charming, an awkwardly charming man named Steve (Sebastian Stan). Even by today’s standards, things start to move fast, and it isn’t long before Steve suggests that the couple go out for a reclusive getaway in the wilderness. It isn’t long before Noa begins to suspect that Steve isn’t quite everything and that the wild appetites that he harbors in his heart, may be more than the stomach can handle.

“Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon” opens where any good stylishly ironic demon-out-of-water fairy-tale thriller should: in an insane asylum. That’s where Mona Lisa (Jeon Jong-seo), a catatonic waif, is seated on her knees in a straitjacket. We see right off how miserable she is; it’s there in her aura — and besides, who in her situation wouldn’t be? Then a gabby, sneering attendant walks into the room to trim the girl’s nails and pelt her with insults. The way the scene is shot, we feel the gathering of Mona Lisa’s repressed energy; we’re all but expecting an act of violence. What we don’t expect is that Mona Lisa, with a blast of what looks to be telekinetic rage (she has already cut to the place Carrie White was at in full prom mode), uses it to guide the attendant’s movements, lifting her...

John Lee’s socially perceptive horror thriller “False Positive” begins near the end of the story — with Ilana Glazer bloodied but unbowed — so it’s no spoiler to say that things go very wrong very fast. But Lee quickly rewinds to seemingly simpler times, when Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) are hoping to have a baby. After two years of trying, Lucy agrees to an appointment with Adrian’s former med-school professor, acclaimed reproductive endocrinologist John Hindle (Pierce Brosnan).
Dr. Hindle’s practice is so well-run that the initially reluctant Lucy is stunned: The office is soothing, his nurses are endlessly supportive, and the doctor himself couldn’t be more positive.
In fact, Lucy gets pregnant right away, with triplets. Dr. Hindle explains that she will have to undergo selective reduction to protect either the twin boys or the single girl. Once she wakes up from the procedure he...

It’s movie math: Take one pregnant woman, add a bunch of shady people, multiply by the natural anxiety that comes with bringing new life into the world, and voila, you’ve got a “Rosemary’s Baby” riff! But while John Lee’s “False Positive” may have seemed — at least initially, thanks to some well-made marketing materials — like some sort of millennial version of the classic horror effort, it doesn’t work on its own merits, let alone as a take on the 1968 feature. While the inevitable comparisons don’t help matters — and really, films about women who are pregnant and scared don’t need to automatically be compared to Roman Polanski’s film, certainly not anymore — its own faults are obvious even without the snappy parallels.

In the middle-aged revenge fantasy movie, the protagonist’s onslaught of violence is a reluctant one. In your John Wicks or Takens, these are men forced back into action by a transgression so grievous it demands brutal retribution. They don’t want to, but they have to. As director Ilya Naishuller points out, Nobody is an inversion of that formula. When Bob Odenkirk’s retired assassin Hutch is jarred from suburban drudgery by a home break in, he loses only a few bucks, a kitty cat bracelet and some pride. Hardly a kidnapped daughter or a murdered puppy. Hutch doesn’t have to dust off […]

"I didn't hear you come home... Mom?" Another clever, creepy horror short to give you a week of insomnia. Goodnight Darling is a scary little 6-minute horror short made by filmmaker Canadian filmmaker Adam Azimov, and it's now available to watch online via the Yt channel Alter. It's about two sisters wondering if their mother's strange behavior that night is a response to a recent family loss, or if something more sinister is at work... The short stars AnnaSophia Robb, Vivien Lyra Blair, Lauren Bowles, and April Lang. Azimov explains that this idea came about from a fear he had as a child that his parents would come home and not be the same. The terrifying thought made him realize "it represented an unspoken and deeper fear that many children face - that my parents weren't the perfect people I grew up thinking they were." This was shot by Polish cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski,...

“Nobody” works in fits and starts, but it’s hard to argue with a movie so eager to please. Bob Odenkirk’s meta-machismo performance sits at the center of this hyper-stylized action ride like an extended cartoon punchline, much like Keanu Reeves has across three “John Wick” movies. And “Nobody” essentially functions as a loony expansion pack of that franchise, with a script by “John Wick” co-writer Derek Kolstad built around hard-knuckle showdowns and shoot-em-ups directed by Ilya Naishuller, in his first credit since the similarly high-octane lunacy of the first-person spectacle “Hardcore Henry.”
As Hutch, the disgruntled suburbanite who resurrects his violent past to fight off hordes of Russian mobsters, Odenkirk becomes a ticking time bomb within the opening minutes. That’s where an amusing montage maps out his drab routine, as he takes out the trash and drives to his bland job as an auditor for his wife’s company,...

As you’re reading this, the 35th Independent Spirit Awards are being held. Oscar will have their say tomorrow evening, but today, it’s the indie films getting their turn! Will this awards show honor the likes of The Farewell, The Lighthouse, Marriage Story, or Uncut Gems? Maybe some combination of them all? We’ll know in a few hours, that’s for sure. What this space for the Spirit Award results once the show is over. A number of deserving movies and performances are about to have one last moment in the sun, before the Academy Awards suck up the last bit of awards season oxygen. If nothing else, it’s a fun, more casual moment, before the pomp and circumstance of the Oscars… Leading the way was Uncut Gems, which took home Best Actor for Adam Sandler, Best Director for Josh Safdieand Benny Safdie, Best Editing for Ronald Bronstein and Benny Safdie.

The winners of the 2020 Independent Spirit Awards are being announced live during today’s ceremony, hosted for the second year in a row by Aubrey Plaza (fresh off rave reviews from Sundance for her performance in the indie “Black Bear”). Unlike the Oscars where Netflix is the most-nominated studio, the Spirit Awards are dominated in 2020 by A24. The indie distributor boats 18 nominations across four movies: “The Lighthouse,” “Waves,” “The Farewell,” “Uncut Gems,” and “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.” The Safdie brothers’ “Uncut Gems” and Robert Eggers’ “The Lighthouse” lead all movies with five nominations each. Both of these films are nominated for Best Feature along with Terrence Malick’s “A Hidden Life,” Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” and Chinonye Chukwu’s “Clemency.”
