BBC Presenter Victoria Coren Mitchell Accuses New York Times Of Cloning Her Cult Quiz ‘Only Connect’
She’s turned her seemingly esoteric quiz into one of the UK’s most beloved game shows, and now Victoria Coren Mitchell has accused The New York Times of copying the format.
The presenter said a newly-launched Times quiz, titled Connections, bears a striking similarity to Only Connect, the BBC show she has fronted since 2008.
In Connections, players must group words that share a comment thread. Only Connect, meanwhile, tasks contestants with making connections between apparently unconnected things.
Wyna Liu, the Times‘ Associate Puzzles Editor, tweeted about the launch of Connections on Monday. On Friday, Coren Mitchell replied: “Do you know this has been a TV show in the UK since 2008 ?! It’s so similar I guess you must do?”

Warning: contains, well, would you call them spoilers? Anyway, those.
Taskmaster’s weekly prize task involves each contestant bringing in an item that responds to the same prompt (Most Powerful Smell/Best Chair/Most Important Document…) in the hope of winning the lot at the end of the episode. It’s the first task of every show, a chance for the comedians to land a punchline early doors, and points-wise, to bag what series 15 runner-up Ivo Graham might refer to as “a Sweet Five”.
All that time to plan the perfect response! What a boon for swots and “Be Prepared” types, you might think. Sometimes. And sometimes not. The capricious nature of the Taskmaster’s scoring logic often finds painstakingly honed prize task entries sent away with a single point while zero-thought efforts delivered with conviction sail off with the big money. And by big money, we mean framed photographs of Frankie Boyle’s children,...

Imagine being someone who’s never seen Taskmaster. A virgin to joy. Someone whose eyes have never before drunk in the sight of a banana-Noel Fielding hiding in a fruit bowl, of Joe Wilkinson presenting the mayor of Chesham with 42 Calippo ice lollies, or of Charlotte Ritchie stumbling around a golf course blindfolded like an adorable Minion. What promise awaits! The prize tasks, the flashes of creative genius, the glorious failures… Alex Horne’s challenge-based comedy panel show is one of the most reliably entertaining TV programmes ever made.

Never before in the field of entertainment was so much owed by so many to so few. The comedians who appear on Taskmaster are brave souls willing to expose the inner workings of their minds for the sake of dumb fun (and a boost in tour and book sales).
Taskmaster is a great leveller that celebrates both genius and failure. There’s nowhere to hide. You can start off in week one as a famed intellectual, by week eight you’re the man who couldn’t successfully hide an aubergine. Exude cool as a stand-up on stage in your professional career? Try to maintain that composure while competitively throwing wet teabags into a mug and let’s see who’s the cool guy now.

Following in the footsteps of Bake-Off and MasterChef, entertainment juggernaut Taskmaster is launching a kids’ version. Junior Taskmaster will be coming to Channel 4 alongside six brand new series of the original show, due to air over the next three years. That’s what you call a good comedy harvest.
While Greg Davies and Alex Horne will remain in their golden thrones for the grown-up show, a brand new Taskmaster and assistant will be setting challenges and monitoring the child cohort. Their names will be announced in due course. Might we expect a past contestant or two to be taking the reins? James Acaster, with his history of cabbage-based vendettas against children, would be a solid fit for the big chair, while Judi Love could school the kids valuably in twisting the facts to their advantage.
Due to a distinct shortage of professional comedians aged nine to 11, the child contestants...

Taskmaster seems to be one of those magically perfect TV shows, but of course the root of its genius isn’t magic at all: it’s a whip-smart combination of Alex Horne’s original format, the comedic force of nature that is Greg Davies in the role of the Taskmaster, and relentlessly good casting.
As we’ve said before, there’s no such thing as a bad series of Taskmaster, and we’re sure Series 15 will be no different, but until it arrives, what should fans fill their time watching?

To outsiders, Only Connect can be a punchline. They see it as the impossible quiz show – tough, smug and incomprehensible to anybody whose photo wasn’t in the local paper for passing A-level maths aged nine. Its host makes weird jokes, its questions may as well be in another language, and its contestants are nerds who probably cut their own hair. A line in an episode of Sky comedy Breeders typifies the stance when a parent tells their child that no, they can’t be home-schooled because then they’d end up on Only Connect.
Those people couldn’t be more wrong. Not about the host’s weird jokes, the esoteric questions – which often are in another language, especially if it boasts its own computer keyboard configuration or shares homophones with English words depictable in cartoon form. Nor are they wrong about the gloriously nerdy contestants, that’s all clearly true.

Like the Doctor in the Tardis, the new presenter of University Challenge will know they have a hard act to follow, as Jeremy Paxman’s withering looks and razor-sharp question-mastery have become part of the show’s very identity. And, much like the new Doctor, when the BBC announced it would name University Challenge’s next host later this week, it prompted fierce speculation on social media.
So who could it be? While former Question Time and Newsnight presenters make some obvious choices, the new host will need to be someone with enough time in their schedule, and popular picks like Clive Myrie and Jeremy Vine are already busy with quiz shows Mastermind and Eggheads, respectively.
But that still leaves us with plenty of predictions. Fingers on buzzers! Here’s our starter for ten…

The Royal Television Society Program Awards 2022 started with a slap on Wednesday evening, when nominee Aj Odudu ran up to the stage and pretended to strike host Tom Allen.
“Oh my God, Aj, oh my God – I’m the one who’s lost their hair, don’t hit me,” Allen, who is bald, quipped in the evidently pre-rehearsed skit. “I never put my wife anywhere near your mouth.”
Continuing the reference to the altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock, which took place at the Oscars on Sunday night, Allen continued: “I’ve got to look my best for tomorrow, I’ve got an audition for ‘G.I. Jane 2.'”
Watching from the audience at the Jw Marriott Grosvenor House in Mayfair, where the awards were taking place, were a bevy of well-known faces including “The Batman” star Andy Serkis, “Supergirl’s” David Harewood and “Succession” actor Matthew Macfadyen. America is no longer leading on the world stage in one crucial metric.
We’ve lost game-show-host supremacy.
On “Jeopardy!,” the standard-bearer for American quiz shows, star power has been outsourced to the contestants. And recent long-running champions Amy Schneider and Matt Amodio lent energy that had otherwise been missing. The recent endless cycling through “Jeopardy!” guest hosts having ended in a fiasco and then a compromise has left Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik, dividing the role, adrift. Both are competent (and were among the more adept options offered up in the season-long talent search), but this viewer, at least, felt somewhat wrung out by the show’s constantly shifting tones and the drama of its hopscotching between emcees and the firing of Mike Richards. The flagship trivia show in this country often feels chastened and a bit wan.

Wonder Woman is the latest blockbuster to fall foul of the censors. From Borat to Sex and the City 2, here are some of the more peculiar film bans
The “glory” days of the British censor – when grey-faced men would take a pair of scissors to every 1980s horror flick, from Maniac to The Evil Dead, while the tabloids screamed “video nasty” in the background – are thankfully gone. These days it takes something truly horrific – a Human Centipede 2 or a Hate Crime – to ruffle the feathers of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). How do they choose the 100 people polled on Pointless? What counts as a Mastermind specialist subject? 7 geeky game show questions…
It’s all very well for game shows to sit there and ask all the questions. How would they feel if we turned the tables and started to interrogate them? Then the quizzing shoe would be on the other foot.
(Potential ITV pitch “The Quizzing Shoe”: two teams of professional cobblers answer trivia questions on the history of footwear for a chance to win their choice of shoe worn by a member of the opposing team. Suggested hosts: Imelda Marcos, P.C. Boot from The Shoe People, Elizabeth Shue.)

Victoria Coren Mitchell is taking a closer look at the history of bohemians for BBC Four.
Three-part documentary series How To Be Bohemian with Victoria Coren Mitchell will journey from 19th century Paris to '60s Soho and focus on influential bohemian figures like Oscar Wilde.
Stephen Fry, Grayson Perry, Will Self, A A Gill, John Cooper Clarke, Rev. Richard Coles, Maggi Hambling, Molly Parkin and performance artist Jonny Woo will all appear in the series.
Coren Mitchell said: "Bohemians confuse me tremendously. I don't know whether to find them exciting and inspiring, or annoying and threatening. Possibly all four at once. From these mixed feelings, I know I must be a bourgeois.
"But I've never been fully immersed in Bohemian circles before. I'll be interested to find out whether I end up running into their open-minded embrace, or running screaming away."
BBC Four's channel editor Cassian Harrison added:...

BBC One's brand new Saturday night gameshow Can't Touch This is among a raft of new entertainment programmes which have been ordered by the broadcaster.
The ten-part series - which will be filmed in Belfast - has a simple enough premise: if you touch a prize, you win it. However, nothing is that easy and contestants will have to negotiate a huge assault course while battling it out to touch the prizes.
BBC One has also ordered a new series called Five Star Family Reunion, in which long lost families have to work together to be reunited in a five star location.
Elsewhere, Shane Richie's quiz show Win Your Wish List will return for eight more episodes in 2016, while Nick Knowles's programme Who Dares Wins has won an eight-episode order - including a Eurovision special. Dale Winton's In It to Win It will also be back for eight more episodes.

Only Connect: BBC Four, 8.30pm
Victoria Coren Mitchell returns to host the ninth series of the fiendishly difficult puzzle game, which sees teams attempt to make connections between seemingly random clues. If you fancy working out what connects "has been dumped", "visits sex worker", "witnessed miracles" and "American lavatory", then this is the show for you.
Undeniable: ITV, 9pm
In last week's episode, Jane claimed to recognise her mother's killer thirty years after the crime. The accused is a respected doctor with an alibi and admired reputation, and while there were inaccuracies in both witness statements, Dr Rawlins' DNA sample seemed to rule him out beyond any doubt.
In the second and final episode, Jane sets out to prove his guilt at all costs, and becomes increasingly isolated and extreme, which causes the police to intervene.

Rupert Everett has long been a martyr to his passions, but lately he's had something else on his mind. Victoria Coren, a lifelong fan, joins him for dinner to talk about his excoriating memoirs, his portrayal of Oscar Wilde and his urge to be a serious man
When Rupert Everett dies, he won't have a funeral. He has given this serious thought.
"I'll go on the bonfire," he says. "That's what I'd like."
At the risk of spoiling his cheerful plan, I feel obliged to point out that it's against the law to put corpses on bonfires.
"Yes, but it shouldn't be," says the actor, irritably squeezing lemon into his tea. "I'm sure someone can put me on there, if I've just died normally. I wanted to put my dad on the bonfire. But nobody else wanted to, so we didn't."
It feels awfully strange to be sitting in a restaurant with Rupert Everett,...

After initial negativity, Elementary now has a 10 million plus audience and is likely to make it to season 2. What went right?
Just over a year ago, we reported the news that CBS was developing a modern-day New York-set Sherlock Holmes series with more than a whiff of cynicism: “It’s a good job it won’t be instantly compared to a multi-award winning, commercially successful and critically adored hit show that’s based around a not dissimilar idea…”.
That was nothing though, compared to the vitriol that spewed forth from the comments section (a place, admittedly, where the lingua franca is hyperbole). Disgust and outrage, rounded out with a notable thread of America-bashing, were amongst the gentler reactions.
It was as if, instead of a TV programme, the network had proposed setting fire to a first edition of A Study in Scarlet while whistling a cheery...

The noise around us never stops. Even The Artist wasn't really silent, for heaven's sake
Famously, audiences have been walking out of The Artist when they discover it's a silent movie. I finally went to see it last week and nearly stormed out when I discovered that it isn't.
My lord, the racket. There's music, there's a series of sound jokes; it even has dialogue. The noise just won't let up. There are a few moments of quiet along the way (as there are in all films) but these were drowned out by the hullabaloo of people rustling sweet packets, crunching popcorn, spitting out Revels, slurping Pepsi, chatting, texting, farting, coughing… I was quite surprised that nobody took out a trumpet. Honestly, where do you have to go to get a bit of peace and quiet around here?
The film, as you probably know, tells the story of a silent...

Jimmy Carr is to make his debut as a comic book writer in this week's CLiNT magazine. The comedian has penned a strip titled 'Beat My Score' - tackling the contentious issue of school shootings around the world - for Mark Millar's publication. "We've been incredibly lucky with CLiNT in this first nine months," said Millar. "We just got nominated for a big award before we've even reached our first birthday and the talent lineup has been unmatchable. "We've had people as diverse as Victoria Coren, Ian Rankin, Jonathan Ross and Frankie Boyle in here and now we've got Jimmy Carr doing comic books. It's crazy. What's nice is that he rose to the occasion and gave us maybe (more)...

Comedian Jimmy Carr has written his first comic strip.
The stand-up funnyman, who hosts Channel 4's panel show 8 out of 10 Cats, has penned an exclusive tale of "violent point-scoring and social alienation" for the latest issue of CLiNT.
A first look at the artwork is featured below, while the magazine cover is above.
The story, Beat My Score, is described as "a nihilistic satirical sideswipe at the glamorisation of violence, tackling the difficult and disturbing effects as seen in school shootings around the world. Its manga-styled images by Japanese artist Ryusuke Hamamoto will resonate in the brain like a ricochet long after the final shots have been fired."
The premise of the tale is: When every action is assessed for its potential as a Tweet, and every success is accompanied by Achievement Points, what will one maladjusted Japanese college student do to claim pole position?
