Stellar Blade is looking to be a huge success for the South Korean game developer and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The ambitious atmosphere and design of the title were partly influenced by director Hyung-Tae Kim’s passion for James Cameron and his creative vision.
Despite working on different formats of storytelling, Cameron’s work was able to inspire other creatives like Kim and encouraged him to do something bold and daring. Shift Up leaped from mobile gaming to console and has much to prove to the gaming industry.

Amazon MGM‘s Play Dirty is ready to announce its female lead for director Shane Black’s upcoming film. Joining Mark Wahlberg for Black’s crime thriller is Rosa Salazar. Lakeith Stanfield also stars, with a script written by Black, Anthony Bagarozzi, and Chuck Mondry.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Play Dirty focuses on the “professional thief Parker (Wahlberg), who, after being double-crossed and left for dead, sees his hunt for revenge bring with it a shot at the biggest heist of his career. But even with the help of his partner, actor-slash-con artist Grofield (Stanfield), he’ll still need to outsmart a South American dictator, the New York mob, and the world’s richest man if he hopes to stay alive.”
Rosa Salazar’s Play Dirty role remains a mystery. However, the film is inspired by Donald E Westlake’s Parker crime novels, written under the pseudonym Richard Stark.

The "Transformers" movies took a pretty healthy break after the release of 2018's "Bumblebee," even if that wasn't originally the plan that Paramount Pictures had in mind. Regardless, thanks to the pandemic, that's exactly what happened. But with the release of "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" in 2023, the franchise is back with much more to come. Not only are we poised for more live-action movies but we're also getting a feature-length, theatrically-released animated film in the form of "Transformers One."
While the robots in disguise started out as toys, it was in no small part thanks to the '80s animated series, as well as 1986's "Transformers: The Movie" that helped make the Autobots and Decepticons staples of pop culture. So bringing it back around to animation feels like a full-circle moment, and one that may well excite fans who checked out during Michael Bay's later live-action entries. So...

Producer Jon Landau says there is interest in a live-action sequel to "Alita: Battle Angel", directed by Robert Rodriguez ("From Dusk Till Dawn"), that adapts the 'manga' comics series:
"...in this action-packed story of hope, love and empowerment, set several centuries in the future, the abandoned 'Alita' (Rosa Salazar)...

"When Alita awakens she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of the world she finds herself in. Everything is new to Alita, every experience a first.
"As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield Alita from her mysterious past while her street-smart new friend, 'Hugo' (Keean Johnson), offers instead to help trigger her memories.

The "X-Men" movie "Dark Phoenix" was hurt by upheaval at its studio, 20th Century Fox. The film was developed during the merger between Fox and Disney; in fact, "Dark Phoenix" was released on June 7, 2019, early into the new management's tenure. During that theatrical run, it made only $254 million on a $200 million budget, ultimately losing $133 million in the worst bomb of 2019.
It's tempting to think Disney undermined "Dark Phoenix." The movie was released as a lame duck, the last product assembled before all Marvel properties were back under Disney's umbrella. Marvel Studios would've doubtlessly preferred not to inherit a completed "X-Men" film, so that they could get to work on their own versions of the characters (even if the Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought back some faces from Fox's "X-Men" movies since).
However, The Hollywood Reporter indicates there was another player who helped doom "Dark Phoenix" — James Cameron.

Now that most schools are back in session, who’s up for a history lesson? Okay, we had one a few weeks ago with the, still in theatres, Oppenheimer. And though it’s really well done, to be honest, it’s kind of a “downer” what with all the “atomic bomb stuff”. This new flick also deals with science, but it concerns the exploration of space, much like the surprise “crowd-pleaser” of 2016, Hidden Figures. Like that film, it concerns one member, rather than the mathematics trio, of a minority that is usually not the focus of these docudramas. Oh, and rather than the swinging sixties this story is much more recent, capping off in 2009. It’s really the story of a dreamer, a man who dares to imagine leaving Earth to travel A Million Miles Away.

For film lovers, the name Robert Rodriguez may bring-to-mind memories of the terrifying misadventures of the Gecko brothers in From Dusk Til’ Dawn – or maybe the name rings a bell as the director of the revolutionary Sin City. But in either case, Robert Rodriguez is the iconic run n’ gun filmmaker that inspired an entire generation of storytellers. And what makes this particular director such a beaming light in the world of movies? Is it his family-style production style? Is it his diverse and broad spectrum of notable works? Could it be the ever-expanding catalogue of A-List talent who star in his projects? Well, yes, yes, and Yes!

Alita: Battle Angel was meant to kick off a brand-new franchise, but the underwhelming box office, mixed reviews, and Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox cast doubt on a sequel. The film has assembled quite the following, and the cast and crew have all expressed their willingness to return for more. Franchise producer Jon Landau recently teased to ScreenRant that they’re “working on” the Alita sequel, and director Robert Rodriguez confirmed that he has been discussing it with Landau and James Cameron.
“Yeah, we have been talking about it, so we would love to make one,” Robert Rodriguez told Total Film, but he added that nothing is guaranteed. “We haven’t set it for sure yet, but we’re definitely hoping to and talking about it a lot. They’re slammed with all the Avatar stuff, but they’ve definitely been engaging in it.“

As Mrs. Fableman recently said, "Movies are dreams that you never forget." There's more truth to that statement than not — even the most grounded, photo-realistic movie has that more-real-than-real quality to it, an intangibility that separates the "dream" from the "dreamer" in the audience.
Perhaps that's why visiting a museum full of memorabilia from cinema history feels so special. It takes those celluloid dreams and makes them feel that much more real, proving that those images and moments were indeed created and constructed by a team of talented artists.
The museum soundstage at Lightstorm Entertainment is just such a place, filled as it is with screen-used props and setpieces from filmmaker James Cameron's impressive cinema history. It helps that Cameron's background in engineering and various other facets of technology lends that much more realistic weight to these items: even up close, they look as if they're fully legitimate,...

When James Cameron set out to adapt Yukito Kishiro's acclaimed cyberpunk manga "Gunnm," also known as "Battle Angel Alita," he made the decision to shelve the project for 20-something years until technology caught up to his requirements for the film's world-building. This is a quintessentially James Cameron thing to do, given that he is the kind of director who knows how to be patient enough until he has the best tools to translate his ambitious artistic visions into reality. By the time Cameron had access to the right kind of technology for the long-gestating "Alita: Battle Angel," he found himself preoccupied with "Avatar," a project that demanded meticulous dedication (and ended up altering the trajectory of performance capture technology in filmmaking forever). As a result, Cameron handed over the reins to long-time friend Robert Rodriguez, while still being involved with the adaptation as a producer and supervising its creative direction.

When James Cameron was first introduced to Yukito Kishiro's manga "Battle Angel Alita" in 1999, he fell so in love with the story that he began developing a movie adaptation barely a year later. Just read the manga and you'll see why Cameron was drawn to it. The story takes place in an apocalyptic future where humans incorporate technology into their bodies and become cyborgs — that's the story of "Terminator" too. The chance to realize such an out-there world in live-action must have also been a tempting challenge for a special effects wizard like Cameron.
Cameron was also likely drawn to "Alita" for its emotional core. The titular female cyborg falls for a young thief named Hugo, who desires to go to the hovering city of Zalem. When he tries climbing to it, he's picked off by the defenses and falls to his death. Losing Hugo and having to carry...

"Alita: Battle Angel" may not be everyone's preferred cup of tea, but there is a reason why the hashtag #AlitaArmy exists and is still thriving on Twitter long after the film's release in 2019. Based on the manga "Battle Angel Alita," the film follows Alita (Rosa Salazar), a reborn cyborg with a mysterious origin who has to adapt to an unfamiliar and exceedingly cruel world. The critical consensus on the film was not overwhelmingly positive, but everyone can pretty much agree on one thing — the visual effects in "Battle Angel" were fantastic, if not revolutionary. And the best part? It was not all digital, either.
Not unlike what the modern "Plant of the Apes" trilogy pulled off, "Alita: Battle Angel" combined practical effects with motion-captured, digital characters. Although Alita herself was completely CGI, many of the surrounding characters were not. In fact, several key sequences in the film took place in real-life sets,...

The "Avatar" movies are responsible for some stunning world-building. The franchise's best quality is how it transports you to an alien world that feels real, to the point where you might get depressed after watching. The film has landscapes you would want to visit, flora you want to touch, animals you want to run away from after they try to kill you, and cultures that feel rich in detail. Never mind that the scripts aren't the best or the most original, because the movies are not about that, they are about experiencing something you can only experience in the theater watching the film, and about the world of Pandora.
A big part of why Pandora feels so lived-in is the VFX artistry involved, from the environments and the mind-blowing water simulations of "The Way of Water," to the varied creatures that inhabit the world, and the performance capture that bring the Na'vi to life.

The 1990s were a bountiful time for fans of cyberpunk, that beautiful science fiction subgenre that deals in transhumanism, the dangers of corporate rule, and exploring the capabilities of artificial intelligence. Films like "Johnny Mnemonic" would introduce the cyberpunk concepts of the 1980s to a wider audience through the magic of the movies, but there are many other, less well-known cyberpunk creations that deserve some love. While it's not technically a movie, the 1993 anime Ova "Gunnm," released in the west as "Battle Angel," is about an hour long and was released in the U.S. on a single VHS, so it sure felt like a movie. It's also an excellent adaptation of one of the best sci-fi manga series ever that inspired James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez to do everything they could to make a live-action adaptation a reality.

How much have you thought about a little movie called "Alita: Battle Angel"? Your answer to that question likely depends on the amount of time you spend online.
At the time, the Robert Rodriguez-directed blockbuster didn't exactly light the box office on fire, relying heavily upon international grosses to make up for a seeming lack of interest domestically -- but never quite managing to make enough of a profit to offset the film's reported budget of 170 million. Combined with the subsequent takeover of 20th Century Fox by Disney, prospects of a sequel to the film based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series "Battle Angel Alita" and starring Rosa Salazar as the impossibly wide-eyed lead have always appeared dim, at best. But simply look up the hashtag #AlitaArmy on Twitter and you're likely to find a deluge of fan-art, sequel demands, and other sorts of appreciation for the movie that...

It’s only been three years since Alita: Battle Angel came out in theaters, and to be fair, the movie was entertaining, even if it had the kind of pacing that made people struggle to keep up if they didn’t know the story beforehand. With that in mind, the movie was still fun since Alita is an endearing character that isn’t helpless but still has to recover a lot of who she was and, in the process, ends up becoming a rather deadly individual. Despite her obvious skill and expertise, she looked to Dr. Ido, played by Christoph Waltz, with some

Fans have been asking for a sequel to 2019’s Alita: Battle Angel for the past few years, but all has been quiet on that front aside from director Robert Rodriguez making it clear that he’d love to return to that world. Whether or not we get an Alita sequel is entirely in the hands of Disney at this point, as Disney of course now owns the former Twentieth Century Fox.
But the silence has been broken at least a little bit this week, with producer Jon Landau telling Deadline that conversations are happening and he’s still hungry to bring Alita back to life.

When it comes to charting out meticulous plans for a movie concept, James Cameron is always one step ahead of the game. Cameron is the kind of director who would rather wait for the right circumstances than jump in on an opportunity with unfavorable odds. It's been a few years since "Alita: Battle Angel" graced our screens and freaked us all out with its bold tiptoe towards the uncanny valley. Even so, Rosa Salazar still managed to make herself convincing as Alita, the charming yet lethal cyborg who is found and taken in by Dr. Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz), a scientist who senses Alita's potential when he comes across her dismantled body discarded in a scrapyard. After nursing — or is it repairing? — her back to life, it begins to become increasingly clear that Alita is not your average cyborg. In fact, she used to fight...

The Wade Williams Collection yields another ’50s sci-fi notable, Monogram Pictures’ ambitious space travel movie filmed in glorious green-challenged Cinecolor. Cameron Mitchell and Arthur Franz sign up for a semi-suicidal space expedition, but instead of murderous Bat-Rat-Spider-Crabs, waiting for them on Mars is the glamorous, mini-skirted Marguerite Chapman. It’s core sci-fi fun from early in the Golden Era. The Film Detective adds a commentary, two new featurettes and an insert booklet; the film itself is lovingly restored to its original Cinecolor brilliance.

James Cameron had been developing Alita: Battle Angel for decades, but when it came time to pull the trigger, Cameron elected to focus on the Avatar sequels and handed the directing reins to Robert Rodriguez while remaining onboard as producer and co-writer. Robert Rodriguez is a man of many hats – in every sense of the word.
While he has been known to rock a fedora or two down the years, the idiom is more a reflection of his “one-man film crew” approach to movie-making, with Rodriguez known for not only writing, and directing but also doing everything from editing to operating the camera.
It’s also a reflection of his ability to turn his hand to disparate genres and movies aimed and markedly different audiences.
Having made his name with movies like El Mariachi and From Dusk till Dawn, the new millennium saw Rodriguez’s career take a surprising turn into the world of family-orientated action with Spy Kids.
A major success with critics and audiences alike, the film spawned three further sequels, with Rodriguez even roping in Sylvester Stallone for the third and fourth efforts.

As South Park famously put it, James Cameron doesn’t do what James Cameron does for James Cameron, James Cameron does what James Cameron does because James Cameron is James Cameron. And what James Cameron wants to do is apparently spend the rest of his life painstakingly churning out Avatar sequels, based on the fact that the second installment will arrive thirteen years after the original at the very earliest, and he’s still planning another three after that.
Long gone are the days when the trailblazing filmmaker used to complete movies on a semi-regular basis, with Avatar 2 set to mark just his third feature in 28 years should it stick to the current schedule and hit the big screen in December 2022, a far cry from the time of his career when he made six pics in 12 years between Piranha II: The Spawning and True Lies.

Producer James Cameron's live-action feature "Alita: Battle Angel", directed by Robert Rodriguez ("From Dusk Till Dawn"), adapting the Japanese 'manga' comics series, returns for a special theatrical release October 30, 2020:
"...in this action-packed story of hope, love and empowerment, set several centuries in the future, the abandoned 'Alita' (Rosa Salazar) is found in the scrapyard of 'Iron City' by 'Ido' (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic.

A fan campaign to get Alita: Battle Angel back into theaters has apparently achieved its goal, according to a response today from Cinemark Theatres. Last week, we shared an update on the Alita fandom’s push to get its members to target Cinemark in a bid to re-release the cult movie. It now appears that the chain have taken this on board, and we could end up with the 2019 production on the big screen, at least in a limited way.
Likely sensing an opportunity for some positive news in what has been a pretty dire year for theatrical outfits, Cinemark put up the following post today:

Alita: Battle Angel is a science fiction blockbuster that came out in 2019. Since its release, thousands of fans have pleaded for a sequel. With more than two years passed and no official announcement of future plans save for a potential spinoff though, it seems increasingly likely that the series may be on the shelf for a while longer, much to the chagrin of its loyal followers.
Still, that hasn’t stopped the fanbase from continuing to push for another movie and they’ve now taken Twitter to – once again – voice their opinion that Fox should absolutely produce a follow-up to their 2019 tentpole. Together, their messages form a chorus that praises the film for its relatable characters, stellar action sequences and impressive use of CGI technology.

Alita: Battle Angel took a little time to find its audience but became something of a sleeper hit and picked up some very dedicated fans. The stylish sci-fi action movie features some incredible fight scenes, cool VFX and Rosa Salazar’s Alita, who overcame criticism of her uncanny valley appearance to deliver a convincing performance.
Unfortunately, though, the franchise’s future remains in limbo as the film didn’t do well enough to get a sequel immediately greenlit. This is especially frustrating as Alita: Battle Angel ends on a cliffhanger with the story half-told. However, fans have launched a #ReleasetheSnyderCut style campaign, dubbing themselves Alita’s Army and are hoping to convince new IP owners Disney that her story is worth finishing.
Their most high-profile act to date saw them hire a plane to fly over the Academy Awards trailing a banner that read: #AlitaArmy #AlitaSequel. In addition, producer Jon Landau...

Jon Landau, producer of last year’s sci-fi blockbuster Alita: Battle Angel, recently took a jab at his own fanbase. In an Instagram post – seen below – the filmmaker wore a special T-shirt whose design implied that, if his followers helped check the spread of the coronavirus by washing their hands, he would reward them with the sequel they’ve begged for all this time.
Although Landau probably meant for the post to be understood as a joke instead of a genuine promise, there’s a solid chance that Alita’s story will eventually get a part two. Indeed, not only is the film incredibly open-ended, but its production – which was originally supposed to be headed by Avatar creator James Cameron – also ended up doubling its original $170 million investment.
Based on a Japanese manga of the same name, Alita: Battle Angel tells the story of a deadly warrior machine that doubles as a sentient teenage girl.

If you were doing a fan poll for the most beloved movies of 2019, one of the leading contenders would be Alita: Battle Angel. Released a little over a year ago, the sci-fi epic earned a respectable $85 million at the domestic box office and a solid $400 million worldwide. That’s a decent return, especially for a February release.
The problem is, the movie cost upwards of $200 million after marketing. So, while it may have slightly exceeded expectations financially, did it make enough to warrant a sequel? The fans certainly think so. And they responded the only way they know how: through social media. Even one of the producers on the first film is encouraging them to speak out.
No doubt fueled by the pic’s recent release on HBO, folks took to Twitter this week to demand a sequel with the hashtag #AlitaSequel. They posted photos, memes and suggestions for future follow-ups and all in all,...

Alita: Battle Angel took a while to find its legs but eventually became something of a sleeper hit. Every penny it made was well-deserved, too, as it’s a stylish and fun sci-fi action movie with some astonishingly cool fight scenes.
One of the most eye-catching elements of the film is Alita herself, a fully CGI creation derived from Rosa Salazar’s motion capture. But when Alita was unveiled in the first trailer back in December 2017, her design received quite a lot of criticism. Her look is inspired by the original manga and she has unnaturally big eyes, with many arguing that she falls squarely within the uncanny valley.
It’s an understandable criticism, but when you watch the movie you very quickly accept her, as she fits in quite neatly with the extreme body modifications seen on cyborg characters throughout the film. Still, the negative reception caused drama behind-the-scenes,...

Robert Rodriguez’s “Alita: Battle Angel” surprised the box office earlier this year with a $404 million worldwide gross. The 20th Century Fox manga adaptation turned out not to be the massive box office bomb many in the industry predicted it would be, and its final haul left the door slightly open for a sequel. Then the Disney-Fox merger closed, making “Alita” one of the final Fox releases and putting a big question mark on a potential sequel. The fate of the next “Alita” film is in Disney’s hands, and producer Jon Landau says fans need to make sure Disney hears their wishes.
