American character actor and playwright. Alumnus of Amherst College (1914), appointed full-time drama coach (1916). Founded the 'Amherst Masquers' troupe in 1917. Acted on the New York stage from 1917, on Broadway the following year. With the Greek Theatre at Berkeley, California, 1922. On screen from 1948. Much on television, often as ministers, doctors or judges.
