In a letter to a Manhattan judge, The Wire creator David Simon called the late Michael K. Williams “one of the finest actors with whom I have had the honor to collaborate and one of the most thoughtful, gracious and charitable souls I could ever call a friend.” But he also asks for leniency for a man charged in Williams’ death. Williams, who played stick-up man Omar Little on the HBO drama, died after overdosing on fentanyl-laced heroin in September 2021 at age 54. And Carlos Macci, 71, is one of four people who have been charged in connection with his death, according to The New York Times. According to a U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York criminal complaint cited by TVLine, Macci and the three other men — Irvin Cartagena, 40, Hector Robles, 58, and Luiz Cruz, 57 — kept selling their drugs even after learning that Williams had died. As its title suggests, Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth entry in the franchise, returns to the Lambert family to close the door on their ongoing saga with The Further. Set a decade after the events of Insidious: Chapter Two, star Patrick Wilson pulls double duty for this sequel, making his feature debut with a sentimental entry more interested in exploring buried secrets and family trauma than the paranormal. Less a sequel and more a continuation of Chapter Two, The Red Door gives a tender send-off to the Lamberts.
Flashback scenes from Chapter Two catch unfamiliar audiences up to speed; after young Dalton (Ty Simpkins) helps dad Josh (Patrick Wilson) escape the Further and return home, the family decides to suppress their memories. The idea, of course, is to prevent future astral projecting into the Further, closing the door on pervading entities hoping to cross into the real world.

Bloody Disgusting’s review of Mr. Harrigan’s Phone is spoiler-free.
Stephen King’s work captures sentimentality and the minutia of small-town life well, effectively building the horror from the nostalgic and mundane. In Netflix‘s adaptation of Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, a novella from 2020’s If It Bleeds, a quaint coming-of-age story gets blended with the dangerous pitfalls of technology. The focus on the former and an emphasis on the details over the story or scares make for an uneven though frequently poignant journey.
Reclusive billionaire Mr. Harrigan (Donald Sutherland) hires a young boy, Craig (Jaeden Martell), to read to him a few times a week. Mr. Harrigan’s ruthless business practices in his younger years left him without friends, and his elder age means his eyesight isn’t what it once was. The pair form an unlikely bond that begins with a shared love of books that only deepens over the years.

Photo Credit: Nicole Rivelli/Universal When Judd Apatow describes the new movie he just produced, Bros, he talks about it as a romantic comedy. Of course, some people will want to pigeonhole the film because it just happens to be a romantic comedy in which the couple is a pair of gay men, but Apatow thinks it would be ridiculous to dismiss the film based on that. After all, he told us, the core of the film’s story is about emotions, feelings, and desires that everybody has, regardless of who they are. Netflix’s 2022 “Netflix & Chills” lineup will include a documentary series on Jeffrey Dahmer, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, and a thriller based on true events and starring Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne. The Halloween-inspired September and October slate also includes a feature film based on a Stephen King story as well as Wendell & Wild, a new animated film written by Henry Selick and Jordan Peele.
Marlon Wayans and Kelly Rowland serve up more family-friendly frights in The Curse of Bridge Hollow, while Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington lead the star-studded cast of the fantasy film, The School for Good and Evil. The 2022 “Netflix & Chills” schedule also offers a few kids series, a couple of action thrillers, and the return of Unsolved Mysteries.

Billy Eichner on the set of Bros, directed by Nicholas Stoller.
Photo Credit: Nicole Rivelli/Universal Pictures In 1997, Ellen Degeneres made history by coming out as gay on her network sitcom, Ellen. The following year, Will & Grace became the first primetime network comedy built around an openly gay character. So it seems a little surprising that, for the last two decades, films based on gay relationships have almost exclusively been “art house” features with limited runs and limited marketing. The new movie Bros hopes to change that — Billy Eichner, who stars in and co-wrote the romantic comedy about a male couple, says he’s proud to be involved with what he thinks will be a groundbreaking film. Netflix has released the first photos from Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, a 2022 film based on a short story by Stephen King. Adapted and directed by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side), Mr. Harrigan’s Phone stars Donald Sutherland as Harrigan and Jaeden Martell as a young man who befriends the elderly Hannigan.
While most, but definitely not all, of Stephen King’s work scares the hell out of readers, Hancock describes this particular story as more of a cautionary fairy tale.
“More than anything, it’s about an odd relationship between a billionaire in his 80s and a [young man] and the bonds of friendship, and how far will you go for a friend?” writer/director Hancock said in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “Do you like Shawshank Redemption, do you like Stand By Me,...

Ahead of the show’s premiere on February 11, the real-life subject of Inventing Anna revealed she won’t be tuning in to the Netflix limited series based on her life. Anna Sorokin, best known as Anna Delvey, talked about the upcoming show in a recent essay published by Insider, which she wrote from her current jail cell in upstate New York. The Shondaland series from showrunner Shonda Rhimes follows the true story of the titular fake German heiress (played by Ozark‘s Julia Garner) as she conned New York’s elite social scene, scamming several out of thousands of dollars in her rise to wealth and fame. In April 2019, she was convicted of grand larceny and sentenced to four to 12 years in prison, along with paying almost $200,000 in restitution. This past February, she was released due to good behavior but has since returned to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement,...

Oh, the irony! I’ve been covering Hollywood industry awards as a journalist for 30 years and now I’m nominated for the Press Award bestowed by Hollywood’s leading PR guild: Icg Publicists. It’s so gracious of them – thank you, huzzahs to all – but now I’ll get a toxic dose of what I report on all the time: nominee jitters.
Uh-oh: do my Hollywood industry peers really, really like me? Should I campaign aggressively? Rent out billboards on Sunset Boulevard? What should I wear on Feb. 7 when the winner is revealed at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in the same room where the Golden Globes are doled out?
Lucky for me, I know the drill. I’ve been nominated, and lost, twice in the past. Only 16 more defeats and I’ll be the Susan Lucci of the Publicists’ Award! So, please, save me: spread the word across town — Vote for Tom!

When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) who he’s never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart.

This week's episode shifts the focus back to Jervis Tetch by having him give an ultimatum between Valerie Vale or Lee. Who will Gordon choose? Will he be able to save them both? I have decided to break down each episode by the characters and major story lines:

Gordon – Valerie Vale asks Gordon to get him an interview with Lee so she can find out more about Alice Tetch’s blood. She continues her blunt nature by asking him why he is still a Pi since he’s only had two cases, which have failed. Jamie Chung plays the part well and is convincing as a blunt, yet seductive foil for Gordon. She eventually plays the...

How to Get Away with Murder Review
When I reviewed Scandal, I basically related the idea that I thought few shows had ever been as convinced of the general stupidity of the viewing public, but I’d also like to buy stock in it. How to Get Away with Murder is clear evidence that I was unaware just how far that envelope could be pushed.
The show is created and written by Pete Nowalk, also of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal fame, and Shonda Rhimes serves as executive producer, but it’s her name you’re going to hear pushed.
The series opens with four people frantically trying to decide what to do about the murder they’ve committed, and they’re doing it on campus during a huge pre-football celebration that sees drunk students roaming everywhere. They’re torn about whether they should go back and move the body,...

Kristen Wiig stars as Imogene, a failed New York playwright awkwardly navigating the transition from Next Big Thing to Last Year’s News. After both her career and relationship hit the skids, she’s forced to make the humiliating move back home to New Jersey with her eccentric mother and younger brother (Annette Bening and Christopher Fitzgerald).
Adding further insult to injury, there’s a strange man sleeping in her old bedroom (Darren Criss) and an even stranger man sleeping in her mother’s bed (Matt Dillon). Through it all, Imogene eventually realizes that as part of her rebuilding process she must finally come to love and accept both her family and her Jersey roots if she’s ever going to be stable enough to get the hell away from them.
Girl Most Likely is in theaters July 19.

Chicago – Advertised deceptively as a comedy, the new film “My Idiot Brother” has a Zen-like quality that is surprising, and oddly captivating, but cannot sustain itself and eventually runs out of steam. Paul Rudd plays the brother to three errant sisters, portrayed by Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel and Emily Mortimer.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
This is more of a slice-of-life than a laugh out loud comedy, but the elements of the absurd post-millennial life of the characters does contribute to knowing chuckles and reflections about the truth that families often hide. In that sense the film attempts redemption, but the story shifts to provide a happy ending that leaves the characters wanting for more, including the Idiot Brother.
Ned (Rudd) practices organic agriculture and happily plies his trade at a local East Coast farmer’s market. He is a kind, trusting presence in all the lives he touches, even selling pot to a...

Beware of major "Remember Me" spoilers below.
From Paul Greengrass' nerve-jangling "United 93" to Adam Sandler's maudlin drama "Reign Over Me," the events of September 11, 2001, have served as both the main event and the trauma-infused context for a string of Hollywood films. The latest cinematic exploration of 9/11 comes during Robert Pattinson's romantic drama "Remember Me."
At the end of what appears to be a commonplace love story between two young New Yorkers — played by Pattinson and "Lost" star Emilie de Ravin — the audience learns that the events of the film are actually set almost one decade in the past. Pattinson's character travels up to his father's office, which we suddenly realize...

What's the suburban equivalent of a lipstick jungle? Food-court forest? Mommy morass? Apron woods? Well, whatever you call it, Brooke Shields is making her way there in early 2010 via a guest appearance on ABC's The Middle. Shields is playing a neighbor-nemesis of Patricia Heaton's harried middle-class mom in an episode slated to air in January. "She's a single mother with four sons that terrorize the neighborhood," says an anonymous Middle man. "Everyone wants to stay on her good side. Patricia's character tries to keep the peace." Btw, after being pre-empted last week, The Middle returns with an original episode tonight.

Chicago – We were considering looking back at the best programming of 2008 when something dawned on us - a lot of it isn’t on the air right now and not yet available on DVD. We at HollywoodChicago.com believe in being productive and helpful, so why tell you something is great when you can’t even see the show?
The final season of “The Shield,” the third season of “Dexter,” the fourth season of “Weeds,” the fourth season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” the final season of “The Wire,” the second season of “Mad Men,” the entirety of “Pushing Daisies,” and the two best new shows of 2008 - “True Blood” and “In Treatment” - all rank among the best programming of 2008, but none of them are on the air right now and none are on DVD yet. What’s a TV fan to do?
