“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

Old Dads is a comedy film directed by Bill Burr, who also co-wrote the film with Ben Tishler. The Netflix film follows three middle-aged men, who find themselves not fitting in the customs of the modern and often times very fragile and easily offended world. Burr’s style of comedy makes the film work as he also stars in the lead role alongside Bobby Cannavale and Bokeem Woodbine. So, if you loved the Netflix film here are some similar movies you could watch next.

Last week, we ran a special Wtf episode about the 1979 Disney movie, The Black Hole, an uncommonly adult film for the family-friendly studio. It kicked off an experiment for the studio to move into adult fare, eventually spawning no less than three subsidiaries that produced some of the most influential movies of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. These off-shoots paved the way for Disney’s place as the most powerful motion picture studio in the world, with them owning Lucasfilm, Pixar and the MCU. With the studio celebrating its 100th anniversary, we figured now would be an opportune time to look back at the studio Disney launched to distribute their more grown-up fare, the now shuttered Touchstone Pictures.
Jump back to 1983, when Disney put out a now obscure comedy called Trenchcoat, starring Airplane’s Robert Hayes and Superman’s Margot Kidder. A comic mystery, it was produced by Walt Disney Productions...

“Americanish,” billed as the first romantic comedy about Muslims helmed by a Muslim-American woman, is coming very soon to a theater (potentially) near you.
TheWrap exclusively debuted the trailer for Inam Zawahry’s directorial effort in May 2021. The film will debut in theaters in California and Arizona on Oct. 6 prior to its VOD premiere on Nov. 14. Sony Pictures International picked up the distribution rights in January of this year after a successful festival run.
Inspired by Aizzah Fatima’s critically acclaimed one-woman show “Dirty Paki Lingerie,” the picture first played at the CAAMFest, which is the largest Asian American film festival in the nation. It won the Audience Award and has since won 25 festival awards prior to the acquisition.

Succession creator Jesse Armstrong once and for all settled a major debate from its fourth and final season.
In the fourth episode of the Emmy-winning series, titled “Honeymoon States,” family and friends of the Roys gather in Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) home to mourn the death of the family patriarch. During the wake, Frank (Peter Friedman), who is the executor of Logan’s estate, finds a “rather worrying piece of paper” in a private safe.
The typed document seemed to name Kendall (Jeremy Strong) as Logan’s successor to media empire Waystar Royco. But a line that started underneath Kendall’s name and moved up through it raised the question of whether Logan was noting him as the successor by underlining his name or crossing it out as if to say he didn’t want Kendall at the helm.

‘About My Father’ director Laura Terruso has spoken about the cast of the comedy film and said that he found Kim Cattrall as one of the funniest women on the planet. Cattrall plays Tigger Collins. Back on the digital front with ‘About My Father’, which is set to stream exclusively on August 18 on Lionsgate Play in India, Kim showcases her versatility by playing a headstrong character with a soft side.
Terruso said: “Casting is the single most important part of making a comedy and to have Robert De Niro and Sebastian Maniscalco playing opposite each other and then to have supporting them, Kim Cattrall – who is one of the funniest women on the planet.”
“David Rasche is a genius in his own right, even Anders Holm, Brett Dier.. Leslie Bibb, is just the ultimate dream woman for Sebastian and they have such incredible chemistry and I think that chemistry is everything in a comedy.

About My Father is a comedy film starring Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert De Niro, directed by Laura Terruso.
The movie is a pleasant comedy that tries to be pure comedy but falls short in terms of humor and sentimentality.
Robert De Niro plays his role well, although it feels like he’s parodying himself once again.
Sebastian Maniscalco, known for his excellent Netflix stand-up comedy, brings some humor to the film with his Brooklyn-style parodies.
Storyline
The plot revolves around Sebastian, whose fiancée encourages him to bring her father, Salvo, an immigrant and a barber, to a weekend gathering with her wealthy and eccentric family. The weekend turns into a cultural clash, during which Sebastian and Salvo discover that the best thing about the family is everything related to family.
About My Father The Movie
The film is a parody of Italian-Americans, Americans… and everything that moves on the screen.

“Write what you know,” is the sage advice usually attributed to Mark Twain. And comedian extraordinaire, Sebastian Maniscalco, has made a very successful career taking it literally. Although his standup act has brought him fame, his latest project, the autobiographical film “About My Father,” is the passion project he says his father has “been living 77 years for.”
Although much of the plot to the comedy film that Maniscalco both stars in and cowrote is fictional, what is hit-the-nail-on-the-head true is his relationship with his father, played in the movie by screen legend Robert De Niro.
“My relationship with my father’s pretty accurate. My father’s, you know, stubborn, hardheaded, judgmental, you know, that seems to be true to form,” Maniscalco told TheWrap — not in a “curse that man” way, but an “I love the old guy” way.

Spoilers are in this article and video for the series finale.
Filmmaker Lorene Scafaria isn’t just the director of two of the best “Succession” episodes from its just-finished final season – “Honeymoon States” and “Living+” – she’s also a major fan of the show itself who is more than happy to discuss the series finale.
“We could talk about that forever if you want. It’s a perfect episode. It’s a perfect ending,” Scafaria – an Emmy Award nominee for the “Succession” Season 3 episode “Too Much Birthday” – tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview about the final episode. “I don’t know how they did it. It’s a show that aims quite high for referencing everything from ‘The Godfather’ to ‘King Lear.’ But I think it achieves it. It was so satisfying, in a way. It wasn’t as steeped in the same sort of tear-jerking emotion as other episodes.

The most important rule change at this year’s Emmys can’t even be found in the 78-page “Primetime Emmy Awards Rules & Procedures 2022-2023” book. But when nominations are announced on June 12, that change could make Emmy voters look a lot more open-minded and a lot less lazy than they’ve seemed in recent years.
Or it could do nothing at all.
The new rule, all of two sentences long, was dropped into a press release several months ago announcing changes for the 75th Emmys: “The number of selections each voting member is allowed to make per category in first-round voting will now be capped at the number of nominations specified for that category. Members will no longer be allowed to vote for an unlimited number of selections in any category.”
Readers of this space may understand why I consider the change so consequential. At the end of the 2022 Emmy season,...

The debates about the finale of “Succession” go on and on, and yet few have the perspective to say the obvious: From the start, this was a bad show, and a misconceived one. In a world of peak TV and oceans of post-”Sopranos” high-end work from around the world, this was an endeavor made by people not quite clear on the concept. There were no adults in the room. “Succession” was very much like what you would get if the Roy children themselves tried to do a grown-up HBO series.
Indeed, only they would think that they were worthy subjects of a TV show, just as, in “Succession’s” fictional world, they’re the only people who think they’re qualified to run an international media company. The problem is that “Succession’s” real world creators didn’t get it either.

Note: The following story contains spoilers from the “Succession” series finale.
The series finale of “Succession” saw the board approval of the GoJo acquisition of Waystar Royco and Tom Wambsgans rising to the top as its new U.S. CEO. The swan song for the popular HBO drama left the fate of many of its core cast open-ended, including Waystar’s chief financial officer Karl Muller.
“I’m egotistical for Karl. He is where he is, working with Waystar, because he’s the best in town. He’s the best in the business, otherwise Logan wouldn’t have him around,” actor David Rasche told TheWrap. “So my guess is that since it’s a cutthroat business, and since Tom has no insights, if he thinks he can use Karl he’ll hire him in a heartbeat. I think Karl’s got a few years left in him and if not,...

In her review of the film, Cate Marquis wrote of About My Father, “Maniscalco and De Niro together are the major highlight and reason to see this light little comedy. As stubborn father and wheedling son, they are a delight together and sometimes even hilarious.”
The hottest comic in America, Sebastian Maniscalco joins forces with legendary Italian-American and two-time Oscar® winner, Robert De Niro, in the new comedy About My Father. The film centers around Sebastian (Maniscalco) who is encouraged by his fiancée (Leslie Bibb) to bring his immigrant, hairdresser father, Salvo (De Niro), to a weekend get-together with her super-rich and exceedingly eccentric family. The weekend develops into what can only be described as a culture clash, leaving Sebastian and Salvo to discover that the great thing about family is everything about family.

Mama Mia! In an alternate timeline, Chris Pratt never voiced Mario in Illumination and Nintendo‘s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. How is this possible? The role could have gone to About My Father actor and comedian Sebastian Maniscalco! Speaking with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on Live With Kelly and Mark, Maniscalco told the duo he auditioned for the Mario role before joining the cast as Spike, Mario and Luigi’s former boss in the film. While Maniscalco didn’t get the chance to play Mario, he says his version of the character is closer to the voice used by Charles Martinet in the video game franchise.
“Everybody was like, ‘How come they didn’t cast an Italian American for the role?’ So I read for Mario, and I went in there and I did the whole, ‘It’s a’me, Mario!’ And then they said, ‘We’re gonna give you Spike.

This post contains spoilers for “With Open Eyes,” the series finale of “Succession.”
“Succession” came to an end on Sunday night with a 90-minute episode that included multiple double-crosses and the biggest Roy family blowout in the show’s history.
After reconnecting at their mother’s home in the Caribbean – including some of the siblings’ most touching moments of the entire series – Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Shiv (Sarah Snook), briefly presented a joint front that gave them enough votes to stop the Waystar Royco sale to GoJo and Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard). But with the votes knotted at six and Shiv as the deciding ballot, the Roys fractured for the last time.
“I love you, I really, I love you—but I can’t fucking stomach you,” Shiv tells Kendall, who quickly spirals out of control at the realization that his life’s dream of taking over the family company has ended.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from “With Open Eyes,” the series finale of HBO’s “Succession,” now streaming on Max.
After four riveting, profane seasons and two best drama Emmys (so far!), “Succession” — the story of the Roy dynasty — came to an end on Sunday night. Creator Jesse Armstrong, who conceived the story of the Roys loosely around the mythology of the Murdochs, announced in February that Season 4 would be its last.
The death of patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) in Episode 3 provided the engine for the rest of the season, and once again divided the adult Roy siblings — Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) — who have an interest in running Waystar Royco, the family’s mega-corporation that was about to be sold to tech giant GoJo. As the three of them fell back into their old feuds and reopened childhood wounds, the deal solidified...

The fictional story uses Maniscalco’s real name, as he is about to propose to his girlfriend Ellie (Leslie Bibb), but his widowed father Salvo (Robert De Niro) still dominates his life. Ellie asks Sebastian to spend the 4th of July with her wealthy blue blood family, with includes her Senator mother Tigger (Kim Cattrall), father Bill (David Rasche) and brothers Lucky (Anders Holm) and Doug (Brett Dier). Sebastian tries to get out of it, with the excuse that he has to spend the 4th with Salvo, but Ellie insists that he bring Dad along. Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco plays a man named Sebastian Maniscalco while Robert De Niro plays his father Salvo, in the comedy About My Father. Maniscalco and De Niro as father and son are the major delight in this otherwise mildly funny, warm-hearted comedy. It is a comedy about family but not really a family comedy as there are bits of adult humor.
Dad Salvo (De Niro) is a hairstylist (don’t call him a barber!) from a long line of hardworking, hard-scrabble, stoop-postured, Sicilian scowlers, but Salvo left Sicily to immigrate to America to give his son a better life. However, his second-generation Italian-American son has fallen for someone who is not a fellow Italian-American – an artist named Ellie (Leslie Bibb) whose immigrants ancestors came over a little earlier – on the Mayflower.

Plot: The film centers around Sebastian who is encouraged by his fiancée to bring his immigrant, hairdresser father, Salvo, to a weekend get-together with her super-rich and exceedingly eccentric family. The weekend develops into what can only be described as a culture clash, leaving Sebastian and Salvo to discover that the great thing about family is everything about family.
Review: The marketing around About My Father makes a big deal about Sebastian Maniscalco being considered one of the most popular comedians in America. Maniscalco’s stand-up routine pokes fun at his immigrant family, his vastly different in-laws, and his observations about how people act. With a fair amount of profanity in his routines, Maniscalco’s brand of humor remains pretty inviting to all audiences. About My Father takes a lot of jokes and stories Maniscalco has told over the years and pulls them together into a comedy loosely inspired by his own life.

If Sebastian Maniscalco really is the most popular comic in the country at the moment, you’d never know why from his film debut in About My Father. So unfunny it’s embarrassing, this is an over-the-top, under-achieving generational comedy that feels like it was written in the mid- to late-1960s and has been moldering in a drawer ever since.
At 79 the oldest person in the cast, Robert de Niro has the most energy of anyone in the film and employs all the tricks he could think of to help the cause. Still, this mostly plays like a ragged hand-me-down being performed at top volume, as if the dialogue was going to be competing with a laugh track.
One plausibly might presume that this lightweight vehicle was conceived and designed by Maniscalco using elements of his own upbringing so as to surround himself with reliable talent to ease his...

Following a handful of supporting roles in “Tag,” “Green Book” and “The Irishman,” Sebastian Maniscalco makes his first bid for leading-man status with “About My Father,” a family comedy sourced from the same semi-autobiographical material that made his stand-up a commercial and cultural phenomenon. To say it’s better than all three “Meet the Parents” films may be a dubious compliment, but it’s one made more significant because it co-stars Robert De Niro — and more importantly, actually features recognizable human behavior amidst its suitably outlandish set pieces. Whether or not Maniscalco has a legitimate future as a movie star, he proves a likeable presence as a romantic lead, while director Laura Terruso skillfully delivers comedic payoffs that tap into his wheelhouse while introducing him to a wider audience.

There’s no doubt that Robert De Niro is funny, but his recent taste in comedies have certainly called his sense of humor into question. It’s been over 20 years since “Analyze This” and “Meet the Parents” launched the robust comedy leg of the Oscar winner’s career, but not every subsequent project has been as successful. Following the twin head scratchers of “Dirty Grandpa” and “The War with Grandpa” (unrelated; though equally ignored), the godfather of Hollywood has finally found his comedy groove again.
And wouldn’t you know, all it took was a good, old-fashioned Italian American family farce — fittingly titled “About My Father.” Though there’s a wide swath of the public for whom De Niro can do no wrong, even giants can fall. Luckily, Sebastian Maniscalco knows the importance of family.

There are quite a few comedians translating their real lives into streaming series or big-screen movies. While Pete Davidson has taken a surreal twist on his life in Bupkis and Bert Kreischer has gone full John Wick for The Machine, popular stand-up Sebastian Maniscalco has mined his hit stage show for a feature film comedy that blends the sense of humor of movies like Meet the Parents with an honest look at the importance of family and father-son relationships.
In About My Father, Sebastian Maniscalco plays a fictional version of himself while the legendary Robert De Niro portrays the real-life Salvo Maniscalco. Sebastian has reservations when Sebastian’s girlfriend Ellie (Leslie Bibb) suggests that they bring Salvo to her parent’s summer home at a country club. As the two families clash, the Maniscalcos learn what they mean to each other while trying to navigate the intensely foreign dynamic of Ellie’s parents and siblings.

“Succession” Season 4 is here, kicking off the final episodes of the Emmy-winning HBO series. The Roy family is at an inflection point as the final season begins: Logan (Brian Cox) has cut his children out once and for good, preparing to sell Waystar to a tech giant (headed up by Alexander Skarsgard’s Matsson) and severing ties with Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Roman (Kieran Culkin).
After watching three seasons of jaw-dropping backstabbing and plot twists, all eyes are on how this thing ends, and if we’ll finally get an answer to the question posed in the show’s first episode: Who will succeed Logan Roy?
With that in mind, you may be wondering when new episodes of “Succession” air, and what time you can watch them (especially if you’re on the west coast). Here’s a complete “Succession” Season 4 episode release schedule.

This post contains spoilers for "Succession."
When Jesse Armstrong announced in a 2023 New Yorker interview that his hit HBO show "Succession" was coming to an end with its upcoming fourth season, fans were shocked. The show had reached not just a dramatic peak in its third season, in which elderly media mogul Logan Roy (Brian Cox) made the first steps to sell his Waystar Royco empire and cut his children out, but a peak in popularity and impact as well, having earned its highest ratings yet during the season 3 finale. For a tragic media satire with such seemingly specific appeal, its fanbase skews broad, sparking both analysis of its thematic richness and shipping videos set to Taylor Swift.
Still, as Armstrong told the New Yorker, "There's a promise in the title of 'Succession.'" With a show designed around the broad idea of a King Lear-type ceding control...

Robert De Niro isn’t shocked that he’s embracing fatherhood again, as he carefully planned for the new child.
On Monday, the legendary actor broke the news to Et Canada that he is now the happy father of a seventh child at 79 years old.
The “Taxi Driver” actor stepped out in New York City on May 9 for the premiere of his latest feature flick, “About My Father”, where he made it clear that fatherhood is no surprise for the actor.

When asked by Page Six at the star-studded event, which featured co-stars Kim Cattrall, Leslie Bibb and David Rasche, if he was surprised to become a father again at age 79, he responded with a very straightforward: “No.”
De Niro said the pregnancy “was planned,” adding, “How could you not plan that kind of thing?”

The Roy siblings come down from the Norwegian mountains and go Hollywood in “Living+,” Episode 6 of “Succession’s” fourth and final season.
With a very attractive offer from Scandinavian online goliath GoJo to buy their media empire Waystar in play, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Siobhan (Sarah Snook) want to fix their money-bleeding movie studio while preparing to host a shareholder’s presentation at the glamorous location. Will the lame-duck corporate leaders be able (or really want) to sell their investors on not only the merger points, but an ambitious new real estate venture their dad and Waystar’s founder Logan Roy (Brian Cox) was preparing before his sudden death?
The answers involve high drama and copious comic cringe.

Contains spoilers for "Succession" Season 4 and all previous seasons
Away from the beautifully observed performances and multi-layered dialogue, one of the most prominent critiques leveled at Jesse Armstrong's seminal "Succession" is that none of the characters are likable. On a personal level, they are all monstrous. What Armstrong and his writers have deftly accomplished is creating people who are largely abhorrent, and putting them in situations that bring out universal feelings of rejection and appeals to parental approval that we all recognize and identify with. Logan Roy's (Brian Cox) family and their various competitors, advisors, and lackeys are a self-serving, cynical bunch of hopelessly entitled near-sociopaths, but what makes them so compelling is that despite their moral failings, they are full of all-too-human traits and flaws.
Are any of the Roy family truly evil, though? Maybe not. But callous, hard-hearted, and unscrupulous? 100%. The only thing preventing most of these...

[This story contains spoilers from Succession season four episode five, “Kill List.”]
In his exit interview, Brian Cox revealed that each episode of Succession‘s final season is one day. And with the death of his character, Logan Roy, serving as a marker, the days appear to be playing out sequentially, with the latest stop in the HBO series’ final tour taking place in the deal-making trenches of Norway.
While Logan’s oldest son Connor Roy (Alan Ruck) is handling funeral arrangements for Logan back home, his siblings were strong-armed to leave the country, with many top Waystar Royco executives in tow, at the request of Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) in order to seal to GoJo deal.
Speaking to host Kara Swisher for HBO’s official Succession podcast, Kieran Culkin explains that his character, Roman Roy, didn’t appreciate Matsson using Logan’s death as a power move and forcing them to travel so soon after,...

Caution spoilers ahead!
The beginning of “Kill List” brings us back to the very first episode of the series where Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) blasts hip-hop music in the back of his limo, gearing himself up for his Vaulter meeting. Only this time, the stakes are higher when Kendall and his brother Roman (Kieran Culkin) are set to complete the GoJo deal with Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård), the tech billionaire who was bidding to buy into Waystar Royco last season. Like his dealings with Vaulter in season one – Matsson even mentions this in one of their meetings – it becomes apparent that Kendall has no idea how to run Waystar. He comes into meetings with a series of business cliches, playing the part of a cool executive, but ultimately achieves nothing.

This post contains spoilers for this week’s episode of Succession, “Kill List.”
On Sunday night’s Succession, Kendall and Roman goofed their way into a deal to sell Waystar RoyCo for a price that only someone who is definitely not a serious person would refuse. Meanwhile, the rest of the company’s high-ranking personnel found themselves squaring up with their counterparts at GoJo, leading to a lot of awkward, corporate pissing contests that actually could’ve been a whole lot more Hunger Games-esque.
